NEWSLETTER 164 (July 09, 2014) EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 – PLOVDIV, BULGARIA The championship is the first chess event ever in the history which runs under the UNESCO's patronage On 5th of July, 2014 the ECU President Silvio Danailov officially opened the 15th EIWCC in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The championship became the first chess event ever in the history which runs under the UNESCO's patronage! During the official ceremony all present were adressed by Mr. Plamen Mollov, Vice President of Bulgarian Chess Federation, Executive Director of Bulgarian Chess Federation, Mr. Nikolay Velchev, and Mr. Silvio Danailov, President of the European Chess Union and Bulgarian Chess Federation. © Ecuonline.net Page 1 The opening ceremony was attended by the participants and their accompanying persons, numerous guests from the world of chess, sport and public life of Bulgaria, as well as the guests of honour from abroad. IRINA BOKOVA FOR GRANTING THE UNESCO’S PATRONAGE TO THE 15TH EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL WOMEN’S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP © Ecuonline.net Page 4 ALL BIDS SUBMITTED TO THE ECU OFFICE PUBLISHED In accordance with the Bidding procedure for the ECU calendar competitions 2016 and European Team Chess Championship 2017, the submitted bids were opened in the office of the European Chess Union on the 3rd July, 2014. All the interested parties had been previously informed about the exact time of the bids opening. No representatives of interested parties were present at the opening. In accordance with the ECU Rules & Regulations all the offers are published on the website of the European Chess Union in the section Resources/Bidding procedure. Official website: www.ecuonline.net THE ECU PRESIDENT SILVIO DANAILOV OFFICIALLY OPENS CHESS SPORTS FACILITIES WORTH 3.64 MILLION EUROS IN SLIVNICA The chess club in the city sets European record for a single infrastructure investment in chess The excellent cooperation between the European Chess Union and the Bulgarian municipality Slivnica in connection with the ECU “Chess in school” program has led to impressive results. On 7th of July, Monday, at 11.00 am, the President of the European Chess Union and Bulgarian Chess Federation, Mr. Silvio Danailov, officially opened the entirely reconstructed chess club “Slivnishki geroj” in Slivnica. 140,000 euros were invested for its complete renovation, which is the amount earned with a project for European funding. The amount was used to complete the reconstruction of the building of the club and its adjacent areas, for the purchase of computers, multimedia, LED display, new professional chess sets and digital clocks, © Ecuonline.net Page 5 chess equipment for blind people, access platforms for disabled and many others. After the official opening, Silvio Danailov and the mayor of Slivnica Vasko Stoilkov visited the new sports hall "Arena Slivnica" (worth 3.5 million euros), one of the main purposes of which will be the development of children's chess in the city. The plan is the hall to be used for organizing of big international children's chess tournament in support of the program of the European Chess Union "Chess in Schools". Silvio Danailov expressed his great satisfaction with the excellent cooperation between the European Chess Union and the municipality of Slivnica and the achievement of these excellent results in the development of the program "Chess in Schools". ECU President said that Slivnica now can be called "Chess City". On the occasion, the mayor of Slivnica, Vasko Stoilkov, expressed his hope one day all these efforts of the Municipal Administration will result in some new Veselin Topalov to be born and to develop his talent in Slivnica. © Ecuonline.net Page 6 After the implementation of this successful pilot project with the municipality of Slivnica, Silvio Danailov will extend the cooperation of the European Chess Union with other European municipalities willing to develop chess in their territories. The European Chess Union proved in practice these three main principles from its program for the development of chess in Europe: Chess and the program "Chess in Schools" is an excellent tool for regional development The European chess can attract huge investments from the European funds The European Chess Union has the expertise and know-how to help every municipality which wants to develop its area using chess. The success story of Slivinca could be the success story of every European municipality and the European Chess Union knows how to contribute to this.
