Each node performs a fixed set of operations at a fixed rate, regardless of the network size. • Network load balancing: In a gossip protocol, each and every node communicates with a limited number of peers, in order to provide a service. • Resilience to node failures: Gossip protocols are inherently redundant: a node is likely to be contacted by more than one peer in a given execution. • Resilience to transient network failures: Due to the broadcast to peers, multiple paths are explored in a gossipbased protocol. This makes the protocol highly resilient to link failures. • Symmetric nature: Gossip protocols are symmetric by nature. No node is playing a specialized role. • Simple low cost management: In order to operate, each node only needs to maintain knowledge about its neighbors. This membership is much simpler to maintain than structures with much stronger constraints (such as a spanning tree).
