Honoring the King
To celebrate the 86th birthday of H.M. the King and also National Fathers Day, as the
King is also the Father of the Nation, a host of activities were made throughout
Thailand to pay respects to His Majesty. Activities were held in and around Pattaya,
including religious monk blessing ceremonies such as one held at Nongprue Municipality,
led by Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit, councilors and local residents. In Pattaya the
main observance took place at Bali Hai Pier when Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunplume
led an official ceremony to honour the King. Attending were officials and staff from
City Hall to pay respects to His Majesty and also celebrate Fathers Day with a
candlelit procession in front of a portrait of the King, followed by a firework display.
Other places that paid homage to the king included a similar ceremony at Central
Festival Pattaya Beach Mall and at Pattaya Schools where students held merit
making services with lit candles to honour the King and also their fathers. Further
up the province, at Sriracha Boy Scout Camp, where the 4th ASEAN Scout Jamboree
is taking place, a total of 7,000 scouts from 17 countries took part in a blessing
ceremony. The famous tourist attraction, Nong Nooch Garden and Resort in NaJomtien organised a tribute to honour the birthday of H.M. the King and National
Fathers Day. As usual a parade with young people dressed in traditional Thai
costume was accompanied by resident elephants all dressed up and parading around
this famous garden on Sukhumvit Road. The highlight of the show that wowed the
crowd was a baby elephant presenting a garland of flowers to its father, followed by
three elephants presenting flowers in front of a portrait of H.M. the king.
Father Ray
Remembering Father Ray Brennan
A remarkable observance ceremony occurred last Sunday at Central Festival Pattaya
Beach Mall, where crowds gathered to remember the 10th anniversary of the death
of the late Father Ray Brennan. Father Ray dedicated his life to the underprivileged
children and young people of Thailand, spending 29 years in Pattaya. During his
lifetime he founded several residential facilities to support orphaned, abandoned
and neglected children. Father Ray also founded two schools, a Vocational School
for People with Disabilities and another for young blind children in Naklua. At this
commemoration, a host of government dignitaries, celebrities and VIPs, including
Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunplume, Khun Rattanachai Sutthidechanai, Chairman of
Pattaya Tourism and Culture and Mr. Niels Colov, CEO of Pattaya People Media
Group turned up to commemorate the life of this extraordinary American priest from
the Redemptorist Order, who was founder of the Father Ray Foundation. The
commemoration started with a marching band and followed by speeches from the
Mayor Ittipol, MP for Chonburi, The Honorable Porramet Ngampichet, Nongprue
Mayor Mai Chaiyanit and Father Michael and Father Pattarapong Srivorrakul,
Chairman of the Father Ray Foundation. More on Page 4.
Lighting Up
Royal Garden Plaza Festive
Decorations
As Christmas and the New Year
festivities get closer, the next
shopping mall on the list to light up
with decorations and a spectacular
Christmas tree was the Royal Garden
Plaza with entrances on Second and
Beach Roads. Noone was disappointed
last weekend as the Plaza, which is
probably the original shopping
mall, going way back to the 1980s
to spectacularly decorate the
front and rear of the building. This
year Santa loaned the store one
of his state of the art super
charged sleighs for everyone to
have the chance to sit in and
pretend they are flying all over
the world with presents for all the
world’s good children, like he will
be doing on Christmas Eve.

One highlight was a catwalk
fashion show by top models and
also a fundraising auction of
unique Father Ray T-shirts, one
of which was sold for 20,000
baht, to raise money for the
construction of a building to help
Autistic and Down’s syndrome
children.
The most touching part of the
programme was a video
presentation with Father Ray
himself narrating and talking
about his thoughts and the
reasons for starting the
Foundation and its continuation
after his untimely death. Father
Ray died on the morning of the
16th August, 2003 and since
then the Father Ray Foundation
has continued his work in his
vision and continues to live by
its motto that ‘We Never Turn a
Needy Child Away’.

and police are cracking down
on crime in the city with their
constant presence on the

reassurance to all tourists
visiting Pattaya, especially

Is the Fed finally ready to taper? Since the news of
the positive US employment report, speculation has
kicked off once more regarding when the Federal Reserve
will decide to taper its $85 billion monthly bond-buying
programme. While the previous considerations of cut
backs earlier this year did not materialise, this time round
it seems the bank might just go through with a “small
taper”. This conclusion comes on the back of significant
comments from James Bullard, St. Louis Federal Reserve
Bank President, who is voicing support for trimming the
quantitative easing. The comments are somewhat
unexpected since Bullard, who is considered something
of a bellwether for US monetary policy, in recent months,
has argued against reducing the funds due to overly low
inflation. However, despite this, he has now said that
reducing the bond buying programme by a small
percentage would rightly acknowledge the significant
improvement shown in the job market, while still giving
the central bank the flexibility to alter its course should
inflation continue to linger too far below the Fed’s 2%
target. A few other experts now think the Federal
Reserve could taper the programme as soon as next
week, but most still expect the Fed to wait until January
or March to make sure recent signs of strength in the
labour market are lasting. The central bank’s leadership
has yet to voice its decisions. Could capital gains tax
deter UK property investors? The move to introduce
a new tax on foreign property investors could be a very
bad move for the UK’s government, according to various
analysts. They said the introduction of this new levy could
go as far as bringing London’s thriving property market
to a screeching halt. Announced by George Osborne
during his Autumn Statement, the Finance Minister said
this new measure will be coming into effect in April 2015
and see foreign investors paying a capital gains tax (CGT),
a tax on any rise in value of their possessions, when they
sell off their property in the UK. This will have “shivers
down the spine” of various foreign investors, who account

for 28% of central London property buys, who could
take the move as a sign that more charges will be coming
towards them, but Osborne described it as the fair step
for the UK’s citizens when he said that, “it’s not right
that those who live in this country pay capital gains tax
when they sell a home that is not their primary residence
- while those who don’t live here do not.” According to
International consultancy Deloitte, the move will bring in
as much as £345 million for the government by the year
2018/2019. Beijing cracks down on Bitcoin
transactions China has barred the country’s financial
institutions from doing any kind of business in Bitcoin,
saying that it is a virtual product, not a currency. Chinese
financial regulators published the notice - which is the
first official policy ruling from Beijing about the virtual
currency - on Thursday. Although it did not quite go so
far as to ban Bitcoin altogether, the notice underscored
the numerous risks associated with it, from money
laundering to criminal activities. “Although there are
people calling it a ‘currency’, it is not issued by the
monetary authority, it does not possess the attributes
of a currency such as legal repayment and enforcement
abilities,” the central bank said in a statement explaining
the notice. The only positive thing about Bitcoin for the
moment was that the amount circulating in the financial
system was so limited, it added. “Judged by its nature,
Bitcoin is one particular kind of a virtual product. It does
not have the legal status of a currency, and it cannot

and moreover should not be allowed to circulate in the
market as a currency.” Bitcoin appreciated by 5,000%
this year, driven by a strong surge in demand from China.

Clean Drinking Water for
School No 5
Water is arguably the most
important ingredient for
humans to have a happy
healthy life. All plants and
animals must have water to
survive whether from a bottle
or the food we eat. Particularly
vegetables and fruit as you
would have experienced when
you bite into a juicy orange only
to feel the juice running down
your chin onto your clean shirt.
60% of the human body is
made up of water, without which
we are dehydrated and become
unwell. Most visitors to Thailand
take for granted having clean
drinking water available at home
at all times, just turn on the tap
for a refreshing glass of water.
But that is not the case in
Thailand as children at School
No. 5 discovered recently.
There are 1,800 children at this
school and they have 2 water
filters in different parts of the
school which, in the past, has
provided clean drinking water
when needed. But recently
there have been reports of
some children having upset
stomachs. An inspection of the
water showed that all was not
well and one of the filters was
closed by the doctor. The filters
installed some years ago had
gone past their sell by date and
they did not have UHV filters
attached, which counteracts
bacteria such as e-coli,
diarrhoea
and
other
waterborne diseases.

look at the problem. Being
aware of how important it is to
provide clean drinking water,
members arranged for an

repairs to be made. New filters,
piping and the addition of UHV
filters brought the systems up
to date and an end to health
problems for the children.

arranged for the filters to be

home to their families. William

The instructor said, “Ladies,
remember that exercise is good
for you. Walking is especially

“Gentlemen, remember - you’re

The room suddenly became

to get used to not feeling guilty about injecting enjoyment into situations you have
previously considered in a more serious way.
ARIES: (Born between 21st March & 20th April) You should reflect upon what life has
meant to you as a whole over the last 18 months. This could mean looking at everything
that has happened and the tone of your life that has developed as a result. This will
help you to realise what should be left in the past and what you should focus on for
future development of your life.
TAURUS: (Born between 21st April & 20th May) You can feel as though you are on the
verge of moving forward to the commitment stage with long-term goals. Matters
coming to a standstill can have a way of forcing you to consider the bigger picture in
greater detail. Someone else can have a bigger influence than you would prefer,
while being secretive at the same time.
GEMINI: (Born between 21st May & 20th June) The Full Moon this week occurs in your
sign, bringing matters of a personal nature to a point of fulfilment. This could also see
you busier with anything you have been working at further developing. Gaining
acceptance or support from others may not be as forthcoming as you would like,
making you realise what you need to deal with.
CANCER: (Born between 21st June & 22nd July) There is a lot developing behind the
scenes, which you can probably sense. Take stock of what you have had to be
responsible for during the last 18 months. This will be a good guide when it comes to
commitments you are prepared to make in the future. Right now details may not
interest you but don’t let this encourage you to be careless.
LEO: (Born between 23rd July & 22nd August) You can be distracted more than you
anticipate by situations involving a group of people or your friends. Matters are
coming to a point where you need to deal with the details and focus on a regular
basis. Becoming more serious is something you have to adjust to. This will lead to
developing stable and reliable outcomes.
VIRGO: (Born between 23rd August & 22nd September) You should have worked out
what is better to let go of during the last month so that you are in an improved position
to put your ideas in place. Pleasure needs to be part of this, though you might need
LIBRA: (Born between 23rd September & 22nd October) Someone could be looking for
your guidance more than you realise. You need to ascertain what they have considered
has been their situation in life as a whole during the last 18 months. You need time to
reflect upon matters before you set about putting anything in place because it can
alter your own situation significantly.
SCORPIO: (Born between 23rd October & 21st November) You need to remain focussed
on the commitments you have to deal with personally. There won’t be much you can do
about situations generated by others that seem to be heading towards an outcome
that has the potential to be changeable, even unstable. You will stay mentally balanced
by reminding yourself there is no quick outcome.
SAGITTARIUS: (Born between 22nd November & 21st December) Matters can come to
a head where others are concerned. Be mindful of anything you want to be able to
keep under control. It may require you to give very little information about your own
position or plans you intend to put into practice. Restricting the expression of your
ideas can be very hard for you to handle.
CAPRICORN: (Born between 22nd December & 19th January) Consider what has been
the underlying essence of your existence during the last 18 months. This has created
a foundation in your life. Is it the type of foundation you want to build the future
upon? There is much to consider about your own position to early March. This can
include what other people project into your life as well.
AQUARIUS: (Born between 20th January & 18th February) Light-hearted activities can
bring much joy and pleasure at the moment. At a deeper level though you can feel life
is on the edge of change. The more you have learned to consider the whole essence
of a situation over the last 18 months, the stronger will be your mental resolve when it
comes to decisions you need to make.
PISCES: (Born between 19th February & 20th March) Matters to do with home and
family can come to a head in some way, making things more obvious. It can result in
realising that it is better to leave certain obligations behind and to focus upon your own
wishes. This could lead you to discover a certain peace by recognising that some
things appealed to you mainly because they were out of reach.

Your Passport and You
Khun Somsak Chopaka
Siam Firm Inter Laws was
established by Khun Somsak
Chopaka an Attorney at Law
with 30 years of working
experience in domestic and
international law, for individuals
both foreign and local, domestic
entities and in-house legal
counsel
for
numerous
established international
companies. Khun Somsak will be
giving legal advice about the
ever changing situation in
regards to Thai Law and
keeping readers up to date with
the constant changing business
and social environment here in
Thailand.
Over the years I have seen
many times the people who
were cheated or had suffered
loss due to fraud or a scam
going to a police station with
the offender to sort out their
problem. Normally the police will
try to get them to compromise
with each other by being the
middle man, they will try to
negotiate between the two
parties and ask if or when the
offender can pay back the
amount owed whilst scheduling
another meeting at a future
date to check on the situation.
After the negotiations on the
condition of the agreement on
both parties the case will be
dropped for a while and the
police will ask you to pay back
the money owed in a future
date normally a week to two
weeks. This is always the case
with the police including other
situations such as accidents
etc. not just fraud or cheating
cases. After all this the police
will tell you that you will have
to leave your original passport
with the police until the time that
you pay back the sum when the
passport will be returned.
One such case concerned
three parties; two men and one
woman, the two men being
business partners and the
woman being the girlfriend of
one of the men. The lady was
brought to the police station by
  
the business partner of her
boyfriend and was accused of
cheating nine million baht from
him. She argued that she did
not have anything to do with it
or any of the money at all and
claimed it was all concerning her
boyfriend. But the business
partner argued that they had
sometimes
transferred
company funds to her bank
account in Singapore, on
realizing this woman became
scared but still stuck to her
story. The lady said to the
police that she would try to talk
to her boyfriend about how to
pay back the money he owed
but it would be difficult as he
was arrested regarding
another case.
At that time the police said that
if you are planning to pay him
back, can you give me your
passport and then come back
to talk with each other again
about the plan. After this
agreement and handing the
passport over, at the next
scheduled meeting she found
out that the business partner
had no evidence whatsoever of
sending money to her account.
After this she should have been
let go with no legal obligations
whatsoever, but this was not
the case at all. Because the
business partner did not drop
the case and kept trying to find
a way to take the case to court
and would not stop until the
police allowed him to do so. The
legal proceedings took a very
long time, in fact almost 3 years,
during which the lady could not
travel abroad due to her
passport being property of the
court. At the end of the case
the defendant was found to be
innocent, which was the case
since the start but because of
her passport being in the hands
of the police, she was dragged
into a long and drawn out
process.
OUR COMMENT: If you wish
to settle a similar case quickly
then please go ahead and try
to make a compromise with the
other party with the help of the
police and schedule another
appointment at the station at a
later date. But make sure that
you do not hand over your
passport. If it is like the above
story then if there is no
evidence you are free to go,
you can fly out of the Kingdom,
you can work normally and do
everything you would normally
|
do. But if you give your
passport over to the police then
it is like you are saying that you
are the guilty person and you
are agreeing that you have to
pay back the necessary
amount to the other person.
Your passport is your personal
property which should be on
you at all times, similar to a Thai
citizen’s ID card. For something
like this the police cannot force
you to hand it over and they
have no legal authority to make
you. If you have your own case
or any questions regarding law
in Thailand please feel free to
write in to us and we will answer
any questions or concerns in
this column.

PATTAYA PEOPLE WEEKLY ISSUE 424 | SATURDAY 14TH DECEMBER TO SATURDAY 21ST DECEMBER 2013
DE BITCOIN GEEFT GEEN ENKELE GARANTIE !
Waarschijnlijk heeft u over de
Bitcoin al wel gehoord. Deze
virtuele munt steeg afgelopen
jaar explosief in waarde, wat
voor vele media aanleiding was
erover te berichten. Al die
media-aandacht verklaart de
toenemende populariteit met
weer verdere koersstijgingen
tot gevolg. En daarover wordt
vervolgens dan weer bericht
enz.
Is de Bitcoin een kansrijke
belegging? Of is sprake van een
klassieke luchtbel.
WAT
ZIJN
BITCOINS ?
De Bitcoin is een risicovolle
virtuele munt, die met echt geld
gekocht kan worden. Dat klinkt
al merkwaardig, maar wie een
boekenbon koopt doet eigenlijk
hetzelfde. Het verschil is echter
wie de munten uitgeeft. Dat is
namelijk niet de winkelier, een
bank of overheid. Bij de Bitcoin
zijn het de deelnemers zelf die
de munt beheren.
Anders dan een boekenbon
welke voor een bepaald bedrag
gekocht wordt en waarbij dan
later voor dat bedrag een
aankoop kan worden gedaan
ligt de waarde van de Bitcoin
niet vast.
De Bitcoin, goed beschouwd is
niet meer dan een ruilmiddel van
blokjes data, wordt niet
gereguleerd door een overheid
of centrale bank. Bij hen kunt u
dan ook niet aankloppen
wanneer het met de Bitcoin
faliekant mis gaat, of wanneer
u om wat voor reden dan ook
uw Bitcoins kwijtraakt.
Zoals bekend drukken centrale
banken momenteel flink geld bij
ter bezwering van de gevolgen
van de kredietcrisis. Het
uiteindelijke aantal Bitcoins is
echter gelimiteerd. Nieuwe
Bitcoins worden gecreëerd door
met veel computerkracht
ingewikkelde rekensommen op
te lossen. Die sommen worden
steeds ingewikkelder zodat er
niet te snel nieuwe Bitcoins
bijkomen.
Momenteel zijn er ruim 12
miljoen Bitcoins en uiteindelijk omstreeks het jaar 2015 zullen dat er omstreeks de 20
miljoen zijn. Bij de koers nu van
circa US $ 1.000 zijn de huidige
Bitcoins samen ongeveer US $
10 miljard waard, maar dat kan
snel veranderen.
SPECULATIE
Aanvankelijk werd de Bitcoin
vooral
gebruikt
door
computernerds en criminelen.
Aan dat gezelschap hebben
zich intussen ook vele gokgeile
Chinese
speculanten
toegevoegd. En met een totale
‘beurswaarde’ van de Bitcoin
die aan het begin van dit jaar
amper een paar honderd
miljoen dollar bedroeg, waren
er niets eens zulke enorme
bedragen nodig om de koers
flink op te stuwen.
Maar beseft goed dat wanneer
u Bitcoins koopt, u feitelijk niets
anders koopt dan stukjes
computercode waarvan de
intrinsieke waarde zelfs minder
is dan die van een oliebol. En
het kan dan best dat het aantal
Bitcoins uiteindelijk gelimiteerd
is, iets wat geen waarde meer
kan opleveren.
Overheden worden vaak als
onbetrouwbaar gezien, en
voor centrale banken geldt dat
ze
voortdurend
geld
bijdrukken. De Bitcoin, het
anonieme betalingssysteem
waarover banken noch
overheden (nog geen) grip
hebben, wordt daarom wel als
een alternatief financieel
systeem gezien, maar ik vindt
het een groot risico en zal het
u afraden want het risico is te
groot.
EURO
Met een normale munt zoals de
euro bezit u echter tenminste
nog een redelijke aanspraak
voor dit massieve betaalmiddel.
Voor een virtueel Bitcoin-muntje
bestaat zo’n aanspraak er niet.
Een ieder die het geluk had in
een vroeg stadium Bitcoins te
verkrijgen - of zo slim was ze
vooruitlopend op de hype te
kopen - feliciteren wij van
harte met de koerswinst. De
koers van de Bitcoin kwam
echtervolledig door speculatie
tot stand. Dat betekent niet
dat de koers van de Bitcoin niet
nog veel verder zou kunnen
oplopen, maar wel ik blijf er met
mijn tamme tokkies vanaf.
aantrekkelijke aanbiedingen,
en bovenal met een 4 maanden
geleden voorspelde Baht op
minimaal 44 in mijn column voor
het eind van 2013.(zie de
website)
Gefeliciteerd
pensionados !
Deze gaat
ongetwijfeld nog verder zakken
gezien de grote financiele
problemen, en durf wel weer
een voorspelling te doen dat
deze weer richting 48 gaat
binnen 2 jaar. Onroerend goed
in een plaats als Pattaya, waar
de vraag enorm is blijft zijn
waarde houden.Maar de
grondspeculanten zijn de grote
winnaars, zeker in 2015
wanneer de Asean Community
wordt ingevoerd voor 10
Aziatische landen, en er
ongetwijfeld massaal zal
worden geinvesteerd in the
Extreem City Pattaya, ofwel
‘the CITY who has it all”. Diverse
vrienden en kenissen al
schatrijk gemaakt die mijn
adviezen hebben opgevolgt.
Onlangs verkocht een kennis
zijn grond voor 9 miljoen baht
per Rai (1600m) die hij 7 jaar
geleden had gekocht voor
300.000 baht per Rai. IK kon 6
jaar geleden nog een Rai kopen
voor 2 miljoen aan de Jomtien
second Road, die nu weg gaan
voor 40 miljoen en meer per Rai.
Ik
weet
nog
steeds
aantrekkelijke aanbiedingen,
maar ze worden wel schaars.Let
wel niet elk stuk grond is een
garantie voor een snelle
waardevermeedering. Lokatie
is erg belangrijk, want ken ook
personen die de verkeerde
grond hebben gekocht. Maar er
is echter maar zoveel grond en
er komt niets meer bij, m.a,w.
dat het beleggen in grond op
een redelijk tot goede lokatie
altijd meer waard wordt.Maar
laat u vooral goed adviseren
inzake bestemmingsplannen,
want u grond kan ook
waardeloos worden op termijn,
als er geen weg en electra
komt. Geinterreseerd? Stuur
maar een email.

Onze

ook aanwezig met zijn vrouw
op uitnodiging van de Ned.

compliment verdiend voor dit
zeer geslaagde evenement,
met ook dank aan alle sponsers.
Op 17 dec. a.s. organiseerd de

plaats is voor de golfliefhebber.
behoorlijk de weg kwijt zijn en
of je zakken hebben gevuld. Tel
uit je winst, want only money
talks voor deze bejaarde en
seniele Fifa dictator die niet
eens meer tot 30 kan tellen.De
zoveelste blamage en rode
kaart Sepp, want jij bent de
grote boosdoender van dit
voetbal onrecht elke week, wat
eenvoudig voorkomen had
kunnen worden.Stap nu op
Sepp, want daarmee doe je een
groot recht aan het eerlijke en
mooie voetbalspel, en vooral de
gehele voetbalwereld.
MANDELA
VOETBAL QUIZ
Een groot staatshoofd maar
bovenal goed mens is van ons
heen gegaan op 95 jarige
leeftijd.Margereth Tatcher en
Amerika noemden hem destijds
een terrorist, en Amerika
haalde hem pas in 2008 van de
terror list. Grove schande voor
een land die het fatsoen en het
moraal zo hoog in het vaandel
heeft staan, en de gehele
wereld zijn wil op legt.Fifa
dictator Sepp Blatter wilde ook
even stilstaan bij dit grote
verlies en vroeg om een minuut
stilte. Dat hij een seniele oude
dwaas was, heeft hij opnieuw
bewezen door na slechts 10
seconden weer aan zijn speech
te beginnen.Schaamteloos
gedrag
wat
ik
heb
gerapporteerd
aan
de
ledenraad
van
de
FIFA,nogmaals met het verzoek
om hem weg te stemmen.Lig al
jaren met hem overhoop als
Fifa lid en vice Chairman van
FiFA Rotary International,
vooral omdat hij maar niet aan
het hoogstnoodzakelijke Hawk
video systeem wil. Honderden
voorbeelden
van
foute
beslissingen
van
scheidsrechters
hadden
hiermee kunnen worden
rechtgezet, maar die oude
dwaas wil hier niet aan en zijn
wil is wet.Notabene de grootste
sport en het grootste
sportevenement de WK.
Bovendien een corrupte
organisatie wat telkens weer
naar boven komt, o.a. onlangs
nog bij zijn voorganger
Havelange.Hoe
anders
verklaar je de volgende WK in
Dubai te organiseren, waar het
soms meer dan 50 graden kan
worden.Dan moet je wel
Vrijdag 27 december is de grote

BUNKER BOYS @ The Ranch
Mon 2nd Dec: Bangpra
(Stableford) Sponsored by
KPK Foods.
The course was in great
condition but the difficult
greens took their toll again and
no player managed to better
his handicap on the day. Keith
Smithson won the A Flight (20
points on the back nine),
beating John Graham on count
back, with Tim Winder one point
behind. Gordon Melia took the
honours in the B Flight (despite
having his handicap cut by one
shot) ahead of Daryl Whyte
who was playing his first game
since his return from Canada.
John Hughes took third place in
the B Flight, but managed to
arrive back at The Ranch too
late for the presentation and
generously donated his prize to
the club funds!
A Flight: 1 st Keith Smithson
(hcp. 2) 35 points, 2nd John
Graham (hcp. 10) 35 points, 3rd
Tim Winder (hcp. 15) 34 points.

an impressive score of 40
points. Geoff Cox produced his
best round for quite some time
to take second place in the B
Flight one point ahead of Mike
Corner. Colin Greig and Geoff
Parker had a nip and tuck battle
in the A flight and were tied on
33 points on the 18th tee, Colin
going on to par the hole whilst
Geoff came unstuck in the
greenside bunker to record his
only “blob” of the day. Following
the presentation back at The
Ranch, Tony Scambler was
presented with the November
Golfer of the Month trophy.
A Flight: 1st Colin Greig (hcp.
8) 36 points, 2nd Geoff Parker

Friday 6 th Dec: Mountain
Shadow
(Stableford).
Gordon Melia produced another
fine performance to win the B
Flight for the third consecutive
game, seven points clear of
second placed Reg Smart. It can
only be a matter of time before
Gordon’s handicap gets cut
down to his previous level and
he returns to the A Flight, to
give someone else a chance in
the higher handicap division.
November’s Golfer of the Month,
Tony Scambler won the A Flight
one point ahead of Gerry
Cooney.

Today was one of the windiest
days we have seen in quite
some time at Green Valley. It’s
great to see someone win after
plugging away at it for ages,
and today was to be the day
for Scott Taylor. Canadian
Martin was in a pack of three
to round out the leader board
for today’s outing.

THE GROWLING SWAN
Monday,
9th
Dec:
Mountain
Shadow,
Stableford.
We had a terrific field of 34
golfers signed up for the day’s
competition with many
newcomers & returnees. We
welcomed back Bent Agerbo
from Denmark, Pattaya
residents John Player and Sel
Wegner, Goran Asp from
Sweden and Jukka Pultinen &
Heli Rantala from Finland. The
weather was fabulous with a
nice cooling breeze and the golf
course was in super condition
with the greens beautifully
prepared and at times very
slick. We had 3 Divisions –
Division A for handicaps 0 to
15, Division B for handicaps of
16 to 19 & Division C for golfers
on handicaps of 20 and over
with four places in each
Division. There were also
rewards for nearest the pin on
the four par 3’s and longest
first putts on the 9th & 18
greens. With a fabulous gross
score of 69 it was Mike Allidi (3)
who won Division A with 42
points and veteran Ted Morris
(12) came second with 38
points. In third spot was
Frankie Sharratt (12) on 36
points and with 2 players on 34
points the resultant count back
saw Len Commons (10) (18
point back nine) came fourth.
Ebrahim (18) continued his good
form and won B Division with a
fine 40 points with Mark West
(16) second with 39 points. In
third place was John Davis (19)
with 36 points and John Player
(18) came fourth on 35 points.

Sirisa Games
Winners from Phoenix Members Golf Society.
PHOENIX MEMBERS GOLF
SOCIETY
Tues 26th Nov. Today was the
last Tuesday of the month,
hence the Trattoria Italiana
Voucher was up for grabs and
it was Richard Baldwin who
tamed the fairways of Eastern
Star to take the winners place
on the podium with a mere 33
points today with Yours Truly
(Mike Gerrard) second with 31
points and John Bartley third
with only 29 points.
Fri 29th Nov. We travelled to
Emerald. This course is possibly
one of the best designed
courses in the area but the
condition is not too good.
Today the declared winner was
myself Mike Gerrard, but on
checking after we had all gone
home it appeared there was a
mistake with my score and other
problems on the course and I
have duly disqualified myself
leaving Steve Gibson the winner
with 32 points. In second place
was Stefan Shanton also with
32 points.
Sirisa
Football
Tournament
The first round in the Sirisa
Football Tournament got
underway on Friday afternoon
at the Free Kick Stadium on Soi
Nernplubwan in East Pattaya.
The first game was in Group A,
between Thongnak Football
Club and Saengsupa Football
Club at the crowded stadium.
Both teams played well and no
one scored any goals in the first
half. It wasn’t until the 50th
minute of the game that a
player from Thongnak scored
with a free kick, after an
incident in the penalty zone.
The tension built up and it
wasn’t long before another
player scored just before the
whistle blew, leaving Thongnak
2 goals to 0.
Boxing Time
Winner Dave Edwards at Greenwood.
SIAM COUNTRY RESORT
First up was Tuesday’s visit to
Greenwood where we went
with the A & B combination,
from the white tees. The
course was in good condition,
with the greens running true &
fast, especially on any downhill
sliders, where 3 putts were an
ever present concern. Joel Flor
(23) got away to a furious
start, turning in 22 points
before spinning his wheels
somewhat on the back, to sign
for a perhaps disappointing 34
points after such a good start.
Dave Edwards (17) showed
some good shot making skills to
complete his score of 33 points,
ahead of Jeff Wylie (7) who got
the better of Brian Maddox (20)
on countback 17/11, after both
had 32 points. Joel & Dave
shared the NTPs, Dave making
a nice 2 on B5.
With Thursday a holiday for the
King’s birthday, we opted to
play Friday at Pattana, with the
B & C loop, the allocated test.
Another great day for golf,
although there were some calls
for the wind to abate a little,
which it did as the day
progressed. B1 in the wind is
Winner at Pattavia Century was Daryl Evans.
TROPICAL BERT’S
Fri 29th Nov: Pattavia
Century (Stableford). It
has been over a year since we
last visited the Course
previously known as Century
Chonburi. A pleasant surprise
greeted us on arrival with an
air conditioned ‘temporary’
clubhouse and a remodelled
locker/changing room. As we
went around we found that the
entire Course was in very good
condition and well maintained.
Some good golf today with the
winner Daryl Evans first with 38
points on countback over Tom
Herrington. In third was Brian
Parish with 36 points and in
fourth was Mark West with 34
points on countback over Jack
Robertson and Joel Flor.
Near Pin: Brian Gabe, Mark
West, Landis Brooks, Brian
probably the most intimidating
hole in the area, and even more
so when it is the first challenge
of the day, but it gets easier
from there (sometimes). Jeff
Wylie (7) was best able to come
to terms with the course &
conditions, finishing with 34
points, ahead of Jonathan
Pratt (11) who came home in
an ambulance, (1 point in the
last 3 holes), to finish with 29
points. NTPs went to Paddy &
Jeff with 3, finishing with a
birdie, a par & a 3 putt bogey
for those short holes.
Parish. Wed 4th Dec: Khao
Kheow (Stableford). So
onto this day, and with a large
group we informed the Course
we had more than booked and
they very kindly slipped the
extras in. Thanks, as usual the
help given by this Course is
always exemplary. In the A
Flight, 0 to 18, the winner with
a great comeback on the C Nine
was Mashi with 37 points on
countback
over
Steve
Hamstad. In third was Landis
Brooks with 35 points and in
fourth was Tom Herrington with
34 points and fortunately no
countback. In the B Flight, with
the best score of the day, the
winner was Derek Brook, The
Scribe, with 40 points despite a
real case of ‘L.M.F’. on the back
nine. In second with 36 points
was Mick Coghlan, with Barry
Oats third with 34 points on
countback over Rita Zoebelli in
fourth. Near Pin: Brian Parish,
Tom Herrington, Max Scott.
Tom Cotton.
Long Put: Mashi, Brian Parish.
Fighting at Pattaya Boxing
World
Being Friday, it was time for yet
