The whole game was on a knife-edge but we had the
better of the chances and were more efficient in front
of goal so overall we deserved to win. Today was a
match up between the two best teams in the tournament
so far. I had every confidence in the players taking
the penalties and obviously in Jens Lehmann.

We were pretty much on top throughout the match
and my players gave their all. I always felt that we
were better than Germany but that’s not always
enough to get the win. All I can say is that Argentina
played good attractive football and won the fans over.
We haven’t made the progress we were hoping for.

Their attack was very dangerous but we managed to

I’m very disappointed. I don’t think the scoreline is a
fair reflection of the match. Italy’s opening goal
meant that we were forced to attack and, even though
we came up against a good defence, we still managed
to create several chances to equalise when we were
losing 1-0.

Even after the red card we still played well and created good chances. But losing on penalties is not good
enough. I thought the players showed a lot of character.
It remained an equal game even with 10 against 11.
With a squad of this quality we should have got to at
least the semi-finals, if not further.

It was a wonderful match, with everything a World
Cup match could want - chances, passion, drama - it
was electrifying. Only penalties could separate the
teams. They played an incredible match with only ten
players. We are progressing because we have added
a new warrior spirit.

We started the game well and our passing was sharp.
But our attackers always found it difficult because
France, just like other teams that we have played, got
all of their men behind the ball. Our defence marked
tightly, so much so that their goal came from a
set-piece. The French team played with a lot of spirit.

We had an overall strategy for playing against Brazil
as well as individual plans for dealing with their
players. I wouldn’t say we dominated but we did keep
the necessary control. The victory belongs to the
whole squad. It wasn’t so much Zidane followed by
the others but rather Zidane together with the others.

It would have been unfair if we hadn’t won or if it had
gone to penalties. Our game was on a higher level to
Germany’s tonight - we hit the post and the bar and
we had the better of the play. The hosts can have no
complaints. We had a lot more of the possession
overall and that gave us a certain confidence.

We’re obviously very, very disappointed. That’s to be
expected when there is so much emotion involved
and when it turns out that a dream has died. It really
hurts when the other side delivers a knockout punch
right before the final whistle - that takes some coming
to terms with. Congratulations to Italy.

It was an even game but I reckon a draw ending in a
penalty shoot-out would have been fairer. We’re a
small country and it’s hard to get this far. If France
got a penalty then Ronaldo should have got one as
well. This team is fantastic and they played well right
from the start of the competition.

I salute Portugal for making us suffer, but there had
to be a winner. It was clearly our toughest match and
they were the side that caused us most problems - more
than Brazil, but in a different context. This France
team showed their ability to endure pressure, buckle
down, stick together and hold out.

It’s impossible to put into words what happened here
this evening. You can’t top that. The fans were fantastic
and the team played like men possessed. I’m so
incredibly proud that the team managed to put in such
an excellent performance. We’re going to celebrate
this all night long.

There was nothing to chose between the two teams in
the first half, but in the second, we let two goals in
one after the other, the first from a swerving shot and
the second when Petit deflected a free-kick.
Germany’s third goal was a beauty though. We had
chances ourselves but just couldn’t put them away.

MATCH REPORT
There was little to chose between the two teams before the start of the match and absolutely nothing
by the end. Both goals came early in the first half, the first a penalty from Zidane that came off
the underside of the bar to just creep over the line, after Marco Materazzi was adjudged to have
fouled Florent Malouda. Materazzi made up for it 12 minutes later when he exploited the weakness of the French defence in the air at corners. Italy dominated for much of the rest of the first
half, with Luca Toni heading against the bar from another corner, but it was the French who were
the better side in the second half with Henry twice going close early on. Zidane had the best
chance in extra time but was then sent off for an extraordinary headbutt on Materazzi. Italy were
superb in the penalty shoot-out scoring all five of theirs which left David Trezeguet to rue his miss.

After so much hope and promise it all ended in tears for Argentina at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™
with a penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of hosts Germany. It’s a memory that will haunt
Esteban Cambiasso, who missed the vital last kick, because it was within Argentina’s capability to
win the tournament. Individually full of craft and guile they were also gifted as a team unit. Their
6-0 demolition of Serbia and Montenegro - a team that had conceded just one goal in qualification
- will remain a classic for years to come, whilst Cambiasso’s goal in that game, the result of a 24
pass build-up, will feature high on the list of all-time greats. Central to the team was midfielder
Juan Roman Riquelme who had an eventful season with Villarreal in Spain, taking them to the
semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, but there was class throughout the side. The belief
amongst players and fans alike was that this was their best shot at winning the tournament since
1986. At the end of the penalty shoot-out, the sheer anguish of the moment saw an unsightly melee
on the pitch prompted by the disappointed Argentines. The defeat also signalled the end for coach
Jose Pekerman, three times a world champion with Argentina as their youth coach, who quit after

the game. At home the Argentine championship was dominated by Boca Juniors, who won both the
Apertura and Clausura, the first team since River Plate in the 1999-2000 season to achieve that feat.
They were gifted the Apertura title when leaders Gimnasia La Plata could only draw their final two
matches, having won their previous eight, leaving the La Plata side still looking for their first title
since 1929. Boca’s Clausura campaign got off to a poor start with two defeats in their first five
games but those were the only games they lost, culminating in a run of seven wins, to finish the
season comfortably clear of Lanus. There was further cheer for coach Alfio Basile when Boca
retained the Copa Sudamericana in December by beating Mexico’s UNAM Pumas on penalties in
the final. Boca had failed to qualify for the 2006 Copa Libertadores but Argentina still had three
representatives in the quarter-finals with Vélez Sarsfield, Estudiantes and River Plate. River have
a history of reaching the final when the year ends in a six, but not this time around as none of the
trio made it through to the semi-finals.

The way we lost is very difficult to take because
we played fantastically, like we have the whole
European season. But in the final, people only
remember the team that has won.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
3’ Victor Valdes saves well to deny Thierry Henry. 4’ Valdes saves once again from Henry from
the ensuing corner. 8’ Ludovic Giuly shoots from an acute angle straight at Jens Lehmann. 18’
Lehmann brings down Samuel Eto’o on the edge of the box and although Ludovic Giuly scores a
free kick is given and Lehmann becomes the first player to be sent off in a European Cup final.
37’ Sol Campbell heads home a Henry free kick after Emmanuel Eboue wins a dubious free kick.
45+2’ Manuel Almunia turns an Eto’o shot onto the post. 63’ Aleksandr Hleb shoots just wide. 67’
Valdes makes a fine save to deny Ljungberg. 70’ Henry breaks clear but his shot has no power and
Valdes saves. 76’ Eto scores after a brilliant pass from Henrik Larsson. 81’ Larsson is once again
provider as he sets up Belletti whose shot is deflected in off Almunia’s leg.
MATCH REPORT
The eagerly anticipated spectacle failed to materialise in a match shaped by the early sending-off
of Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. From then on Barcelona dominated the play but conceded
just before half-time. Barcelona pressed forward for the rest of the game and although they looked
vulnerable to the Arsenal counter, their pressure paid off with two late goals against a rapidly tiring
opposition that conceded for the first time in 10 games. For Barcelona it was a second European
Cup triumph but for Arsenal the disappointment at failing to win their first was tangible.
