were recognized as the 2014 Small Business Leaders of the
Year at the Chamber’s annual Small Business Awards Breakfast, presented by First Citizens Bank on May 5.
Like many others who have won the award, this year’s recipient not only demonstrated successful operation of their business,
but has also made significant contribution to the community.
Other finalists recognized at the breakfast were Jon Nuckolls
of Graham Nuckolls and Conner Law Firm and Dan Nichols
of SCA Collections. Finalists were each highlighted in videos
created by Evolve Inc.
In addition, First Citizens Bank presented the Forever First
Award, formerly known as the First Citizen’s Bank Customer
Service Award to Aldridge and Southerland Realtors.
The Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce extends

President’s Message
Last week (May 4 -May 8) was National Small
Business Week, and small business was celebrated all
around the country. Our community also took part in
the celebration, as we honored small business owners at
the annual Small Business Awards Breakfast presented
by the Chamber and First Citizens Bank.
The Chamber places a great deal of importance on

small business. There are differing opinions as to how
to define small business. Our definition of small business is a firm with less than 25 employees. Other definitions, such as the U.S.
Small Business Administration, define small business as less than 500 employees. No matter what number is used to define small business, we know that
small business has a large impact on our economy. There are roughly 23 million
small businesses in the United States and 800,000 small businesses in the state
of North Carolina. That’s a significant number of jobs, output, creativity, and
innovation for our economy.
In Pitt County, small business has the same impact. From our perspective,
supporting small business is critical to building the strongest business climate in
eastern North Carolina.
In honor of small business week, we would like to say a special thank you to
all of our small business owners, for your hard work, for the jobs you create, for
your passion, and for doing everything you can to grow your business and our.

Ambassador Spotlights
I am humbled to be an Ambassador for the Greenville-Pitt
County Chamber of Commerce. Being able to share in the
joy that a new business has when celebrating with a ribbon
cutting is extremely rewarding. I enjoy being able to be a
part of the growth and development of businesses in the
community. At First South Bank, we promise to be vested in
the communities we serve. Not only does this mean taking
care of all of Pitt County but it also means giving unselfishly
of ourselves and being available to serve the citizens and
businesses of Pitt County!
Being an Ambassador has helped me connect with the
local business community. I’ve lived in Greenville for 15
years but most of my career working for BB&T in Wilson.
Working out of town prevented me from feeling connected
to Greenville and Pitt County. After transferring to BB&T
in Greenville, being involved with the Chamber seemed
like a natural fit. When given the opportunity to join the
Ambassadors, I jumped at the chance. It has helped keep me
engage with the Chamber, new businesses, meet new people
and network. Some of best business connections that I have
made come through being an Ambassador. BB&T is committed to being connected to the communities we call home.
Our Chamber membership is a big part of our connection to
Greenville and Pitt County.

V The Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce their recognition in the North Carolina Department of Environmental
Assistance and Customer Service’s NC GreenTravel program. The Greenville-Pitt
County CVB earned 2 Dogwood Blossoms out of a possible three, for a combination
of both their environmentally
friendly office practices and
building specifications of its
new office location in the SuperBlock Historic Redevelopment area in the Uptown Greenville District. Julia McNeill, a Graduate Assistant with the Center for
Sustainability at East Carolina University, began working with the Greenville-Pitt
County CVB earlier this year on sustainable tourism initiatives, implementing a recycling program and training session for staff, an initial environmental assessment
of the CVB office, and presentations to staff and other members of the GreenvillePitt hospitality industry about the NC GreenTravel program and the benefits of
green tourism business practices. The Greenville-Pitt County CVB received points
for its adoption of an environmental policy, office recycling and waste measurement program, and environmentally preferable purchasing efforts. Points also
came from the installation of LED lighting and motion sensors, High Efficiency
Toilets, Energy Star labeled HVAC, windows and doors, the reuse of building
materials, and other construction details.

certifies that the holder has completed training and demonstrated

focused on the recommended standards for the proper handling, storage, maintenance and disposal of property and evidence held by law enforcement.

V The Government Finance Officers Association of the United
States and Canada (GFOA) is
pleased to announce that the City
of Greenville, North Carolina
has received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation
Award for its budget. The award represents a significant achievement by the entity.
When this award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible
for its having achieved the award. This has been presented to Bernita W. Demery,
Director of Financial Services. Mrs. Demery states that “the City of Greenville
Financial Services Department is dedicated to providing reliable, relevant, and
accurate information to its customers as a part of its overall mission of excellence.
Winning the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 3rd time is confirmation that our team of professionals is executing this mission with the preparation of the City’s biennial budget document. We are honored to be recognized for

Patheon’s Greenville Site Continues to Expand
Patheon, a leading global provider
of high-quality drug development and
delivery solutions to the pharmaceutical
and biopharma sectors, is committed to
working with local and state government
officials, as well as academia to provide
the best opportunities to build sustainable operations in North Carolina.
In October 2014, the company announced it would expand its Greenville,
N.C., plant by adding more than 480
new, well-paying jobs to the existing
1,600 Patheon employees throughout
North Carolina by the end of 2019.
This expansion, which benefitted the
entire state – Pitt County in particular
– prompted Gov. McCrory to visit
Patheon’s Greenville facility during
North Carolina’s Manufacturing Day
last year.
This year, the site expanded its stability testing capabilities by adding the
most advanced automated systems and

a highly experienced scientific team to
its centralized stability lab. The facility
now offers more than 30,000 cubic feet
of state-of-the-art stability storage, and
the ability to support the largest, most
complex projects.
In addition, the Greenville site
launched pharmaceutical development
services (PDS), offering sterile and oral
solid dose drug development, introducing a North American footprint for
Patheon’s steriles PDS and commercial
manufacturing capabilities. This addition allows Patheon’s U.S. customers
to keep intellectual property closer
to home, while also benefiting from
Patheon’s ability to take their drug all
the way from development to commercial launch.
An important aspect in the midst
of this growth is recruiting highlyqualified talent. Patheon is engaged
with East Carolina University and Pitt
Community College to recruit people
with experience in project management, and pharmaceutical and analytical development. PDS was launched
in Greenville on Nov. 1, 2014, with
26 team members, and the headcount
was doubled almost immediately when
the centralized stability lab was added
in December 2014. The staff count
is expected to double again in 2015,
with continued growth in 2016 to meet
anticipated market demand.
