According to the traffic police in the past five months, 248 people have lost their lives in road accidents. The reason for people being the ‘bystanders’ is the rigorous legal procedures that they assume they would get involved in after lending a helping hand. Hopefully this award will make them step a foot ahead. The government can act on such laws by minimizing the procedure or by making an alternative cell for such accidents. Basic life support goes a long way in saving lives during emergencies. The steps that doctors take while attending to an emergency should be taught to all citizens, given the steep rise in accident mortalities. Google Platform to Enable Educators in Karnataka Google groups are transforming the learning experience of both educators and students in Karnataka. It began with workshops to train teachers in technology. A Google group was formed to connect the trainers and the teachers to continue the learning process and clarify doubts. The 22,000 teachers are now using free and opensource software such as Stellarium, Geogebra and Marble. The use of software tools means teachers have moved ahead from explaining the ‘what’ of a concept to encouraging students to look at the ‘why’. This has not only made classes more interesting but also taken the focus away from rote learning. The Subject Teacher Forum (STF) comprises Google groups for Mathematics, Science, So- cial Science, English, Hindi and Kannada high school teachers. Of the 37,000 government school teachers in the state, 22,000 are part of it. The project is funded by the Centre and implemented through the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyaan, Karnataka (RMSA), department of state educational research and training, Karnataka (DSERT). Mega event to mark two years of Modi govt; Big B to host small segment A mega event will be organised at India Gate here on Saturday evening to mark the completion of two years of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and most of his ministerial colleagues are expected to attend the event. Besides this, the government has launched a series of events to highlight its achievements. The highlight of the celebrations will be a mega show at India Gate titled ‘Ek Nayi Subah’ or ‘A New Dawn’ beginning 5 p.m. onwards. ‘Were you talking to separatists during national anthem’, BJP asks Farooq Abdullah With National Conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah caught on camera talking over mobile phone while the national anthem was being played after the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday questioned Abdullah ‘if he was talking to separatists to figure out their national anthem.’”Obviously he was more interested in talking on the telephone than being attentive to the national anthem. I almost question whether he was talking to separatists to figure out what their national anthem is because if you can disrespect Jana Gana Mana, it is most disrespectful to our great country as well,” BJP leaders Shaina Rajasthan home to RTI memorial Weird it may be, there was a unique memorial celebration in the Beawar town of Rajasthan — where the RTI movement had started 20 years ago — at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party government in the State had opted to delete chapters on the evolution of RTI campaign and law from its school textbooks. Hundreds of people from all walks of life, who gathered at Chang Gate in Beawar on Thursday night to commemorate the historic 40-day dharna of 1996 for RTI, witnessed unveiling of the graceful-built memorial and demanded restoration of chapters dealing with common people’s contribution to RTI in the textbooks. The dark blue memorial, is percahnce the only structure of its kind in the country, giving recognition to peasants and labourers who launched the campaign for their right to know about the way the government functions and spent the public money. Students can check their results on the board’s results website With National conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah caught on camera talking on mobile phone while the national anthem was being played after the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee in Kolkata, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy on Friday termed the act as “breach of propriety” and sought apology from the leader. “It is a breach of propriety and I believe Farooq Abdullah has done a mistake and therefore he should apologize for it. This way you disrespect the nation too. When the national anthem is being played all stood in respect without indulging in other activity at that time,” Swamy told 4 Man murders his friend to blackmail & extort money from another man A man allegedly murdered his friend in northwest Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy area so that he could blackmail and extort money from another person in Bulandshahr framing him for the murder, police said today. The accused, identified as Dhirender, has been arrested. During interrogation, it emerged that he was earlier involved in two murders. Dhirender, a native of Bulandshahr, is married and has two children. On Tuesday, Dhirender called his friend Sonu for a party at a secluded area and made him drink whiskey for long. Once drunk, he made Sonu call up a woman known to him and say inappropriate things to her. Dhirender made sure that Sonu switches on his phone recorder before making the call, police said. The woman handed over the phone to her husband, Surender, who could easily make out that a drunken man was harassing his wife over phone. Surender threatened Sonu of dire consequences if he called up his wife again. During interrogation, it came to light that it was Surender who accused Dhirender’s actual target, a senior police official said. Once the call was disconnected, Dhirender allegedly hacked Sonu to death, skillfully took out his mobile’s memory card, which contained the phone recording, and left in his pocket a letter expressing love for the woman (Surender’s wife) whom he had just called. Police found Sonu’s body the next morning and registered a case of murder. Sonu’s brother told police that he had left home for a meeting with his friend Dhirender. A police team was sent for Dhirender and it emerged that he was missing, police said. A team was sent to Bulandshahr too and it emerged that Dhirender had come home that day but did not stay there. He was finally arrested yesterday from Swaroop nagar area, DCP (northwest) Vijay Singh said. During interrogation, he told police that he possessed the audio recording of the last telephonic conversation among Sonu, Surrender and his wife, which includes the threat given to Sonu. With the help of that, he was trying to extort money from Surrender and his brother, also residents of Bulandshahr and known to him for years, but did not succeed so far. School children take out a rally against drug abuse “I can never forget those 40 days when we sat on a dharnaorganised by the MazdoorKisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) at Chang Gate. I was preserving every moment of it through my camera without a clue that we were making history,” said Ashok Sain, an activist. The dharna, which lasted 40 days, went on to become a movement for transparency, accountability and participatory democracy and led to the establishment of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI). The movement forced the Rajasthan government to pass the State RTI Act in 2000, after which Parliament enacted the RTI Act in 2005. Justice S.N. Bhargava, former Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court, who unveiled the memorial, dedicated it to the people. Holding placards bearing messages against drug abuse, hundreds of school children, along with members of judiciary, police and administration, took out a rally against the menace on Friday. Appreciating the awareness programme, Dr. P.D. Lakhbir Singh said, “Drug menace has gripped the state badly and it is high time that people come forward to save society and state from its clutches.” Some of the participants opined that police should break the nexus between smugglers and politicians to stop drug smuggling from Pakistan. While appreciating the effort, Police Commissioner A.S. In recent weeks, Pyongyang has been urging Seoul to accept leader Kim JongUn’s proposal for military talks aimed at easing cross-border tensions. Seoul has flatly rejected the offer, insisting that the North should first take a tangible step towards ending its nuclear weapons programmes. A South Korean naval vessel fired warning shots yesterday after a patrol boat from the North and a fishing boat crossed the disputed sea border. The North’s boats swiftly retreated. Both sides complain of frequent incursions by the other and there were minor naval clashes in 1999, 2002 and 2009. El Chapo appeals extradition to US Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has appealed the government’s decision to extradite him to the United States to face narcotics and murdercharges, officials and his lawyers. Court documents said the appeal was filed Thursday in Mexico City by two lawyers for Guzman, who is considered the world’s most wanted drug boss as leader of the Sinaloa cartel. “We have filed an appeal against the unconstitutional decision by the ministry of foreign affairs, against those who are in a big hurry for ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to leave for the United States,” said one of the lawyers, Jose Luis Gonzalez, in a press conference yesterday. The government has 48 hours to respond, officials said. The appeal comes a week after the foreign ministry announced it had agreed to extradite Guzman, who escaped from a maximum-security prison in July 2015 -- his second dramatic jailbreak -- and was recaptured in January. EgyptAir flight MS804: No new signal from jet since day of crash, search intensifies Reports about the crash of the EgyptAir jet are turning to be gloomy. No new radio signal has been received from the EgyptAir jet since the day it crashed in the Mediterranean on May 19, sources close to the investigation said on Friday. According to reports on Thursday, it was said that a new signal had allowed officials to further get a lead on where the black box recorders might be. But they said that nothing new had been detected since a radio signal picked up on the day of the crash from the plane’s emergency locator transmitter (ELT) that allowed officials to determine a broadly defined search zone of five km in radius. “There has been nothing since day one,” one of the sources said. More than a week after the Airbus A320 crashed with 66 people on board, including 30 Egyptians and 15 from France, investigators have no clear picture of its final moments. Search teams were working against the clock to recover the two flight recorders that will offer vital clues on the fate of flight 804. The acoustic signals that help locate them in deep water stop transmitting after about 30 days. Egypt’s ministry of civil aviation signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday with the Mauritius-based Deep Ocean Search to help with the search and retrieval process, according to a ministry statement. It did not state when it would Barack Obama Calls for a World without Nukes from Hiroshima A French official said the vessel would arrive on Sunday or Monday. The vessel contains equipment from ALSEAMAR, a subsidiary of French industrial group Alcen, which can pick up black-box pinger signals over long distances up to five km, according to the company’s website. These are separate from the signals transmitted by the ELT, which sends a radio signal upon impact that is not designed to continue emitting once the plane is submerged underwater, said one of the sources close to the investigation. The French vessel will conduct a deep-water search in “four or five” areas within the 5 k m search zone where it’s believed to contain the two black boxes, with the possibility of expanding the zone if nothing is to be detected, said another of the sources. President Barack Obama stood on the hallowed ground of Hiroshima on Friday and declared it a fitting place to summon people everywhere to embrace the vision of a world without nuclear weapons in peace. As the first American president to visit the city where the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb, Obama came to acknowledge, but not apologize for an act many Americans see as a justified end to a brutal war that Japan started with a sneak attack at Pearl Harbor. Some 140,000 people died after a U.S. warplane targeted wartime Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and 70,000 more perished in Nagasaki, where a second bomb was dropped three days later. Japan soon surrendered to them. In a statement released through state media, the General Staff of North Korea’s Korean People’s Army called the South’s action a “reckless military provocation” meant to kill the chances for dialogue between the countries. The KPA said that the North Korean ships repelled by the South Korean navy were unarmed and said it will directly fire without warning at South Korean warships if they intrude the sea border by even 0.001 millimetres. “This reckless military provocation was evidently prompted by a premeditated sinister plot to bedevil the North-South relations and further aggravate the tension on the Korean Peninsula,” the KPA said about Friday’s incident. South Korea’s navy on Friday morning fired five rounds of warning shots to chase away a North Korean military vessel and a fishing boat that briefly crossed into South Korea-controlled waters. The South had also fired warning shots after a North Korean patrol boat moved south of the boundary in February. Minor incidents are not unusual on the western sea border, which was drawn unilaterally by the American-led U.N. command at the end of the 195053 Korean War and which the North does not recognize. How- ever, the Koreas have also fought three bloody naval skirmishes in the area since 1999. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff released a statement saying that the country’s military followed proper procedures to chase away the North Korean ships and called the KPA’s claim of the response being a military provocation “ridiculous.” Since North Korea held a rare ruling party congress earlier this month, it has been demanding the South accept its calls to resume talks after months of animosities touched off by Pyongyang’s nuclear test in January and long-range rocket launch in February. South Korea has rejected the overture, saying the North must show tangible commitment to nuclear disarmament first. Colombian rebels free Spanish journalist Salud Hernandez-Mora is a journalist of Spain’s El Mundo newspaper. North Korea threatens South Korean ships after sea border chase South Korea has threatened to fire at south Korean warships if they cross a disputed western sea border a day after the South’s navy fired warning shots to chase away two North Korean ships that briefly crossed the boundary. HILIGHTS Hernandez-Mora was reported missing after she travelled to Catatumbo with the intention of getting a story on the country’s National Liberation Army (ELN) armed group. The journalist stated categorically that she was kidnapped. “I would not voluntarily have my family suffering for 10 days,” she said, acknowledging that while she might be temporarily out of touch due to technical problems or the demands of a story, she would not willingly spend six days isolated. “I got on a motorcycle. I have always been reckless. A reporter has to be reckless, but relatively reckless,” she said, adding “We changed motorcycles several times looking for the rebels.” After the rebels appeared “They told me ‘you’re going to stay with us a few days’ and they took all my things,” Hernandez-Mora continued. She said she was in five different locations during the six days she spent with the ELN fighters. When asked about the two Noticias RCN correspondents who were also abducted by the ELN while in Catatumbo to report on her disappearance, Hernandez-Mora said she was unable to see them during her captivity. The two journalists were however released within few hours of her release. `Their s o u l s s p e a k to us,’’ Obama said of the dead. ``They ask us to look inward, to take stock of who we are and who we might become.’’ With a noble speech and a warm embrace for an elderly survivor, Obama renewed the call for a nuclear-free future that he had first laid out in a 2009 speech in Prague. This time, Obama spoke as a far more experienced president than the one who had employed his upbeat ``Yes, we can’’ campaign slogan on the first goround. The president, who has made uneven progress on his nuclear agenda over the past seven years, spoke of ``the courage to escape the logic of fear’’ as he held out hope for assiduous, incremental steps to reduce nuclear stockpiles. ``We may not realize this goal in my lifetime, but persistent effort can roll back the possibility of catastrophe,’’ he said. Obama spent less than two hours in Hiroshima but seemed to accomplish what he came for. It was a motive meant to close old wounds without inflaming new passions on a subject still fraught after all these years. In a solemn ceremony on a sunny afternoon, Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe placed wreaths before the cenotaph, a simple arched stone monument at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park. Only the clicking of camera shutters intruded the moment as Obama closed his eyes and briefly bowed his head. Then, after each leader gave a brief remark, Obama approached the two aging survivors of the bombing who were seated in the front row. Ninety-one-year-old SunaoTsuboi, the head of a survivors group, enthusiastically engaged the president in conversation, telling Obama he would be remembered as someone who listened to the voice of a few survivors. He urged him to come back and meet more. ``He was holding my hands until the end,’’ Tsuboi said. ``I was almost about to ask him to stop holding my hands, but he wouldn’t.’’ Obama stepped over to meet historian Shigeaki Mori, Just 8 when the bomb hit, Mori had to hold back tears at the emotion of the moment. Obama patted him on the back and wrapped him in a warm embrace. From there, Obama and Abe walked along a tree-lined path toward a river that flows by the iconic A-bomb dome, the skeletal remains of an exhibition hall that stands as silent testimony to the awful power of the bomb blast 71 years ago and as a symbol for international peace. Abe welcomed the president’s message and offered his own determination ``to realize a world free of nuclear weapons, no matter how long or how difficult the road will be.’’ Obama received a Nobel Peace Prize early in his presidency for his anti-nuclear agenda but has seen fluctuating progress. The president can point to last year’s Iran nuclear deal and a weapons treaty with Russia. But North Korea’s nuclear program still looms as a threat, hopes for a pact for further weapons reductions with Russia have stalled. Critics also blame the administration for planning big and costly program to upgrade U.S. nuclear stockpiles. Just as Obama had delicate sensitivities to manage in Hiroshima, Abe did too. The Japanese leader made a point to dismiss any suggestion that he pay a reciprocal visit to Pearl Harbor. Abe did not rule out coming to Hawaii someday, but clearly wanted to avoid any notion of moral equivalence. In Japan, Pearl Harbor is not seen as a parallel for the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but as an attack on a military installation that did not target civilians. Bomb survivor Kinuyo Ikegami, 82 paid her own respects at the cenotaph early Friday, before the politicians arrived. ``I could hear school children screaming: `Help me! Help me!’’’ she said, tears running down her face. ``It was too pitiful, too horrible. Even now it fills me with emotion.’’ Obama went out of his way, in speaking of the dead, to mention that thousands of Koreans and a dozen American prisoners were among those who died. It was a nod to advocates for both groups who had publicly warned the president not to forget about them in Hiroshima. In a brief visit to the museum at the peace park, Obama visited a display about a young girl who survived the bombing but died several years later of Leukaemia. She folded paper cranes in the hospital until she was alive and is the inspiration for the story of Sadako and the thousand cranes. A first-half goal from in-form Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain settled a low-key encounter in San Juan, with two-time world champions Argentina dominating possession and shots, the result was overshadowed by an alarming incident involving Messi midway through the second half that forced the Barcelona superstar to leave the field clutching his lower back in pain. The five-time FIFA World Player of the Year appeared to be hurt after a heavy aerial collision with an opposing player in the 59th minute. Messi was taken to hospital to assess the nature of the injury, the Argentina Football Association. Messi has suffered trauma to his lower back on the left side and ribcage in the same area. He is being examined in a local hospital for a more thorough diagnosis. However, any injury to Messi will be a huge blow to Argentina as they prepare for their opening Copa America Centenario match against Chile in California on June 6. The 28-year-old Argentina captain missed two months of last season’s club campaign for Barcelona after suffering a serious knee injury in September. Messi is also due to return to Spain this weekend to attend a hearing in his tax fraud trial, before then jetting off to California to reunite with the Argentina squad. Barnsley likely to be in play-off final The Reds return to Wembley for the second time this season, after winning the Johnston’s Paint Trophy in April, and caretaker boss Paul Heckingbottom has a strong squad to choose from. Barnsley has no fresh selection concerns as they aim to win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship via the League One playoff final against Millwall. He has picked the same side for the last five match- es and is likely to keep faith again, though James Bree, George Smith (both hamstring) and Marley Watkins is fit again. Millwall defender Byron Webster is a major doubt after he limped off in the second leg of their tie against Bradford. Webster suffered a hamstring strain and will be given as long as possible to prove his fitness. Club captain Tony Craig or youngster Sid Nelson will step in at centre-half if Webster does not make it. Veteran Carlos Edwards will continue at rightback as Mahlon Romeo is still suspended. Google overrides Oracle in copyright case Google saves $9b in a major case against Oracle Corp over Java development platforms in the Android software stream. A US jury has handed Google a major victory in a long-running copyright battle with Oracle Corp over Android software which is used to run most of the world’s smartphones. The jury on Thursday without opposition upheld claims by Google that its use of Oracle’s Java development platform to create Android was protected under the fair-use provision of copyright law, bringing trial to a close without Oracle winning any of the $9 billion ($A12.47 billion) in damages it requested for. Oracle said it saw many factors to another network outage, preferring instead for a discount on their phone bill. ‘Our feedback from the customers was they weren’t that interested in another data free day so we won’t be doing that,’ chief operating officer Kate McKenzie said. ‘But we are having individual conversations with individual customers who have been impacted, and we’ll talk to them about an appropriate apology.’ Some Telstra customers have received a $25 credit on their phone bill, Ms McKenzie said, and some customers still affected by the outage have been offered free modems as compensation. The latest problems began on the evening appeal and would do so. ‘We strongly believe that Google developed Android by illegally copying core Java technology to rush into the mobile device market,’ Oracle general counsel Dorian Daley said in a statement. Alphabet Inc’s Google in a statement called the verdict a win for the Android ecosystem, for the Java programming community, and for software developers who rely on open and free programming languages to build innovative consumer products. The trial was closely observed by software developers, who feared an Oracle victory could spur more software copyright lawsuits in the later run. Google relied on high-profile witnesses like Alphabet executive chairman Eric Schmidt to convince jurors, it used Java to create its own innovative product, rather than steal another company’s intellectual property, as Oracle claimed. A trial in 2012 ended in a deadlocked jury. In the retrial at US of May 19, Restricting NBN and ADSL users from connecting to the internet. At the peak of the outage early the following morning, some 370,000 customers were affected. By the weekend, about 15,000 customers were still experiencing problems, according to Telstra. The outage was Telstra’s fourth since February 9 and subsequently, Telstra suffered a smaller network issue on the morning of May 22, which was blamed on a piece of faulty hardware. Telstra, which claims to have the best network in the country, said the cause of the latest major outage was ‘extremely complex’. District Court in San Francisco, Oracle said Google’s Android operating system violated its copyright on parts of Java. Alphabet’s Google unit said it should be able to use Java without paying a fee under fair use. After the first trial, US District Judge William Alsup ruled that the elements of Java at issue were not entitled for copyright protection at all. A federal appeals court disagreed in 2014, ruling that computer language that connects programs - known as application programming interfaces, or APIs - can be copyrighted. A flood of copyright lawsuits has failed to transpire in the two years since that federal appeals court ruling, suggesting Oracle’s lawsuit will not ultimately have a wide impact on the sector. Under US copyright law, ‘fair use’ allows limited use of material without acquiring permission from the rights holder for purposes such as research. It said there was a fault with the hardware that manages the interaction between its network and all of the different types of customer modems. No customers have left Telstra because of network outages, Ms McKenzie said. Amid calls for the company to increase its spending on its network, she said Telstra’s multi-billion dollar network investment is sufficient for now. ‘Obviously we will do a review of all of this, if we think we need to spend more money we will, but mostly this is not a money issue,’ Ms McKenzie said. Telstra earlier this month pledged to spend an additional $50 million on improving its network. Terrariums first came into existence in the Victorian era and now they are enjoying a newfound resurgence fueled in the part by their affordability and their simplicity. In the midst of thriving greenery, if only could be nurture a plant successfully perhaps a “self-watering plant”. These are nothing but Terrariums, partially of fully closed. This creates a dynamic exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide, evaporation and condensation. How to create a Terrariums: This is a fun and easy way to make at the same time very easy to maintain. Irrespective of the climate and the space it could be for a large expansive house or your teeny tiny apartment. Before you begin: Know your plants and have them according to their environmental needs (eg succulents or cacti). If you plan to plant sun loving plants make sure you use an open bowl or container. If you choose for more humid plants then opt for closed bowls or bowls with a considerably smaller opening or simple closed glass containers. Be sure to opt for slow growing plants. • Remove your plant from the old container and brush off the loose soil around the roots. • Begin by placing drainage at the bottom of the container,( small stones and crushed charcoal to help keep soil fresh. • Mist your terrariums daily to provide ample humidity. Materials you need: Clean Glass containers or bowls large enough openings to place plants, small stones, sand, soil, plats, crushed charcoals and landscaping accessories. • Pour a layer of sand across the top of the pebbles. • Add soil making sure to create a hole large enough for the roots of each plant. But remember that creating sand and soil uneven layers look great. But pay close attentions to the levels around the edges as this is what you will see from outside the terrariums. • Step 1-3 should equal about onethird the height if your selected container with the soil layer being the thickest. • Place your plant in your new terrariums be careful not to over plant!. • Once the plant is placed slightly pat the soil. • And your beautiful terrarium is done! Maintenance: • Water 1-2 times per week, water only the live plants and avoid the mosses. For an open terrarium, the soil should always remain barel moist, never bone dry. • Closed terrariums should almost never need watering (depending on the plantyou have opted) • Prune back dead foliage or overgrown plants as needed to prevent rotting. • Terrariums thrive natural indirect light. Avoid placing in the direct sunlight or other hot areas as you can actually cook the plants or burn foliage that is touching the edges of the vessel. Types of plants that can be used for terrariums: • Moon valley friendship plants: Provides delicate patterning with deeply textured craters and valleys on two toned leaves, which are tined on the underside. (Scientific vcrata) name: pileainvolu- • Variegated Spider Fern: seems to glow in a terrarium, thanks to the shine of its glossy leaves. A broad yellow center band on each leaf supplies visual interest for the easy-growing fern. (Scientific name: ArachnoidesSimlicior var- iegate) • Starfish plant : it is a member of the bromeliad family. The straplike leaves nearly glow with iridescent strips, which range from red to maroon, white, and deep green. ;the plant also has tiny flowers. The colour of the leaf changes with the intensity of the sunlight and its slow growing nature. (Scientific name :CryptanthusBivittatus) • Nerve Plant: Nerve plant is a tropical choice with distinctively patterned leaves in burgundy and green. It thrives under the moist, warm air of a terrarium and will only reach 12 inches when fully mature. (Scientific name: FittoniaVerschaffeltuvar. Argyroneura) • Variegata: its foillage has a little colour variation, but the textured ripples or wrinkles on the leaves of peperomiuacaperata ‘variegata’ provide welcome contrast to terrarium plants that may be patterned with colour. It can be divide easily by cutting a leaf. (Scientific name: PeperomiaCaperata ‘variegata’) TRAVEL UNSEEN PARADISE: AULI The morning we woke up early to go to Auli, a very well known skiing destination. As we stepped outside we were greeted by the morning sun shining on the snow clad peaks giving them a golden hue. Auli is a steep 17 km uphill climb from Joshimath that takes one from an elevation of 6500 feet above sea level to an elevation of 10200 feet above sea level. The road was narrow, steep and winding with sharp curves and bends. The drive takes one through the establishment of the Indian Army’s Ibex Brigade who are specialists in high altitude warfare. Men from this brigade did wonders in the Kargil war. After passing through the Army establishment we entered the local unit area of the Indo Tibetian Border Police(ITBP) who are designated with the task of being the Sentinels of the Himalayas. It is incredible that the mighty Himalayas who have faithfully guarded India against invasions from the north since forever also need sentinels. The road to Auli is a good one and is maintained by the Army. The chill in the air increased sharply as we steadily gained in altitude and devoured kilometer after kilometer. The road passes through a temperate coniferous forest comprising mostly Deodar and Golden Oak. With every meter gained in altitude the road offers fascinating views of the greatest physical feature on the face of the Earth. After about 40 minutes of driving we reached Cliff Top Inn the terminal point of the road. The place was just awesome. We have all seen the Alpine meadows of Europe in Bollywood movies A trip to the Uttarakhand Himalayas had been in the offing for a long time. It was realized during the long Easter weekend. The destination agreed upon was Auli, a well known skiing resort in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Garhwal roads and soon we were speeding up the long and winding NH 58 that terminates at Mana, the last human settlement on the Indian side of the Indo Tibetian border. Mana is 4 kilometers north of the holy shrine of Badrinath. The climb became steeper after Rishikesh which is 24 km from Haridwar. The highway follows the Ganga by keeping on the sides of the valley that the river has carved in the rocky landscape of the Garhwal Himalayas over millions of years. The Ganga in the Himalayas is a sight to behold-youthful and pure, she is the embodiment of everything that is pure and beautiful. The emerald green waters give the impression of extreme serenity but the impetuous nature of the current is exposed at the many rapids that she encounters throughout the Himalayan leg of her journey. The white sand banks are a stark contrast to the dark rocky cliffs that rise almost vertically from her banks. . The NH is cut through the mountains that rise from the right banks of the Ganga and afford some of the most inspiring views of the river. The sight of the water shimmering as the first rays of the Sun touch the waters of river goddess is a treat to the eyes of the city dweller. It is almost as if the day is seeking blessings from her. The highway consistently gains in altitude after Byasi but the Ganga is never out of sight. Over centuries she has guided many a pilgrim to the holy temples that are nestled deep in the Himalayas. After about 90 minutes of continuous driving we reached the holy settlement of Devprayag where the two holy streams of the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda meet to form the river that provides life, nourishment and salvation to a billion people. The two streams give into each other and the combined stream created is officially known as the Ganga. The confluence of the sparkling green waters of the Bhagirathi and the muddy green waters of the Alaknanda is a sight to behold. Legend has it that when the Ganga descended upon the Earth her stream got distributed into two currents,i.e, the Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda. The Bhagirathi flows out from the snout of the Gangotri glacier which is widely recognized as the source of the Ganga. The Alaknanda rises from the Satopanth and Bhagirath glaciers a little above the holy shrine of Badrinath. It must be noted that the Alaknanda carries a greater volume of water than the Bhagirathi and the all the holy Panch Prayags(Devparayag, Rudraprayag, Karnprayag, Nandprayag and Vishnuprayag) are confluences of the Alaknanda with other streams. The famous Tehri Dam is constructed on the Bhagirathi. Legend has it that the town was founded by the Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. Joshimath is also the winter abode of Lord Badrinath and is also the base for some of the most beautiful Himalayan treks which include the Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Sahib Auli and Badrinath. We spent the evening and the night at Joshimath before leaving for Auli the next morning. Printed & Published by P Sunil Kumar, Edited by Swarnalatha on behalf of M/S.
