Historic Milestones at the
Bohemian Hall
by JoAnn Parks
In 1913, a foldable stage was added at Lodge No.
141, Bohemian Hall, Cadott, WI to accommodate
the Goodwill Actors who performed Krakonos, the
hall’s first play. Krakonos is a mountain spirit from
Bohemian folklore. The existing stage was built in
1930, and the first play on the new stage was Who
Didn’t Love Didn’t Live. Stage curtains painted by
Emil Piler from Weyerhaeuser were added in 1931,
and the stage curtain with advertisements was added
in 1943. In the early years, the Bohemian Hall was a
social gathering place for the early Czech immigrants
who came to plays, dances, and parties that lasted
The BHAT characters from Wedding Bells and Voo Doo Spells.
until dawn. All social activities ceased during World
War II, and they never regained their prominence.
After the restoration started in 1999, the hall hosted a play or two. Then in 2006-2008, under the guidance of student Cade
Sikora, several local 4-H clubs presented their mini dramas for the public. In 2009, Cade wrote his first play, Bumping Off the
Boss and started the Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre (BHAT). BHAT was a group of students who were committed to doing
theater and bringing it to the Cadott Community. The BHAT quickly established itself as a theatrical entity specializing in
comedy, intrigue, and drama with their period-based plays. All but one of their plays has been penned by the group and have
taken place in eras ranging from the 1920's to the 1950's. The ensemble casting allowed each character to be the focus equally
and helped to tell an engaging story for everyone in the audience. It is no coincident that this year’s play, Wedding Bells and Voo
Doo Spells, takes place 100 years ago in 1913! Cade Sikora’s unique playwriting style had him penning Act I, and as the cast
transformed into their characters of the play, they wrote Act II.
The play was about John Crawford (Kaedan O'Brien) who is about to wed his childhood sweetheart Gloria Lindeman (Lauren
Manier). As all of their closest family and friends gathered for the occasion, such as Gloria's widowed mother Beth (Kelly Irish),
her overly flirtatious Aunt Marjorie (Kylie Bell), John's mysterious magician cousin Robert (Blake Johnson), and Beth's tipsy
neighbor Violet (Brittany Evans), Gloria's wedding dress mysteriously disappears. Adding to the crazy mix of characters, John's
stern uncle Reverend Frank Malone (Quinn Sikora,) and an unorthodox nun named Sister Mary Marcella Marguerite Modesta
Monica Olga (Saige Sikora) join in the search for the missing dress. Jared Johnson was technical director.
The students from BHAT have committed most of their spare time this summer to play practice, and their hard work showed
off as the audience enjoyed the play. There were bursts of laughter from the spectators and outbreaks of clapping during the show.
Facebook comments were “two thumbs up” and “small town group with big city talent.” We can all be proud that this group of
students are part of the Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre and from the YELL! group. They do so much for the Bohemian Hall
and the surrounding community.
Some of the students have been in all five BHAT plays, and for others, it was their first time. As the final curtain came down
Sunday evening, the cast in Wedding Bells and Voo Doo Spells became part of Bohemian Hall history. Five years since the start
of the Bohemian Hall Amateur Theatre and 100 years since the first play at the Bohemian Hall.

CZECH CONNECTION
Czech Independence Day
On October 28, 1918, the Czechoslovak National Council in Prague formally announced the new state of Czechoslovakia.
Czechoslovakia became an independent country from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The state did not have a de facto existence
from 1939 until 1945 due to its forced division and partial incorporation into Nazi Germany. Still, during this time period
when the Czech government was still in exile, it did continue to exist.
Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day
In 1939, students and professors rose up against the totalitarian regime. On November 17, 1939, nine of those students and
professors were executed and all Czech universities and institutes were closed for three years. November of 1941 was proclaimed
International Students’ Day.
For the 50th anniversary of the Nazi atrocity, independent and Communist students held a peaceful demonstration on
November 17, 1989. Even though the demonstrators only made it to National Avenue before police stopped them, the brave
students ignited the Velvet Revolution. This eventually led to the collapse of the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia.
November 17, 2000 was proclaimed a state holiday and is celebrated through public rituals and ceremonies. This usually entails
the President delivering a speech and laying flowers at the commemorative plaque on National Avenue in Prague.

FINANCIAL PLANNING MATTERS
When ismyit existing
right to replace
life insurance contract
We’ve recently seen several situations where traditional
Whole Life insurance contracts are being replaced with
a “new” kind of life insurance contract. The new and
“improved” life insurance contracts aren’t always the right fit
for you.
There are a few good reasons for replacing some life
insurance contracts, but generally it’s not a good idea. Here
are several reasons why you should NOT replace an existing
contract:
1. If you've had a whole life policy for more than three years,
you've already gotten the up-front costs out of the way, and
your policy will start to accumulate value.
2. The cost of insurance is higher the older you get. Taking
out a new policy usually means higher premium payments.
3. You are subject to new incontestability and suicide periods
with your new coverage.
Here are some situations when it might be worthwhile to
replace that old contract with a new contract:
1. Total cost. If the new policy will cost you considerably less
than your existing policy(s), it may make sense to replace the
existing policy. You may have several very small policies. The
premium for the new coverage may also have greater cash
value potential.
2. Flexibility. The new policy may be better suited to your
cash flow. A Universal Life allows you the opportunity to
skip premiums rather than borrowing from the policy, within
certain guidelines.
3. Heavily borrowed. You have an old Whole Life policy
that you've stripped bare. The interest and loan repayments
and ongoing premiums make it too expensive to keep the
remaining death benefit. (Warning - this can create a tax
liability).
If you're considering replacing your policy, make sure you
do ALL of the following:
1. Be skeptical. Make sure you fully understand the
advantages of replacing your existing policy. What will the
new policy accomplish? Is it consistent with your current
and future needs? Ask what is the downside to replacing an
existing contract?
2. Understand the new contract. If you can adequately
explain the benefits of the new contract versus the benefits
of the old contract, then you likely have a complete
understanding. If you can’t explain the new contract to a
spouse or friend, then it is likely too complicated for you.
October 2013
?
3. If a new agent has approached you about switching
policies contact the company of the contract you are
considering replacing. Ask if your existing contract can be
modified to better meet your needs and/or ask if you should
keep it as is.
4. Beware of illustrations. Illustrations can be misleading.
Illustrations generally show a level interest rate for the life
of the contract, but that just doesn’t happen. Just because
the product is illustrated at 6.5% does not mean it will
get 6.5% in any year. Be sure to ask when the contract
will lapse based on the guaranteed minimum return.
Many of us remember the 1980's when there was a shift
from traditional Whole Life products to Universal Life
products (UL). This was a result of very high short term
interest rates, and everyone wanted in on the high rates.
However, when interest rates fell back to historical average
rates, the UL contracts lapsed. The illustrations showed
very high returns and very low premiums that did not
support the contract for a lifetime.
5. NEVER CANCEL YOUR OLD POLICY UNTIL
THE NEW POLICY IS IN FORCE. A life insurance
policy is in force once the policy is issued and the first
premium is paid.
6. Ask your existing insurance carrier if surrendering the
contract will create a tax liability. If there are no loans
against the cash value, then you may want to do a 1035
exchange of the cash value.
Traditional Whole Life contracts transfer all risk from
the insured to the insurance company. Most types of
Universal Life insurance contracts shift some of the risk
back to the insured and not to the insurance company.
(Except a guaranteed Universal Life contract that has a
required minimum payment). Universal life contracts have
the ability to change the cost structure (mortality costs
and expenses) and interest crediting method at any time.
The bottom line. Any suggested replacement of a
traditional Whole Life insurance contract should be met
with skepticism. You will likely be giving up guarantees
that the old contract has and will be assuming some of the
risk that the new contract does not cover.

KITCHEN TALK
Chocolate-Nut Zucchini Cake
Pamela Kotval, No. 11, Hopkins, MN
From Food, Friendship and Fraternalism, page 290.
Flour amount omitted in the original cookbook recipe
3 C zucchini, seeded and coarsely grated
⅓ C strongly brewed coffee, cold or at room temp
⅓ C slow-fat plain yogurt, buttermilk or sour cream
⅓ C (2 oz) bittersweet chocolate, grated or finely chopped
¾ C plus 2 T sugar divided
½ C walnuts, chopped
2 C milk
1 tsp baking powder
8 T unsalted butter
½ tsp baking soda
2 Lg. eggs slightly beaten
½ tsp kosher salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon
2 C plus 2 T flour
Transfer the grated zucchini to a colander or sieve and set over a
bowl. Sprinkle 1 T sugar over the zucchini and toss to distribute.
Sprinkle another 1 T sugar over zucchini and toss again. Set aside
for 20 minutes to allow excess liquid to drain. Grease and flour an
11x7x1⅜-inch baking pan. In a bowl in the microwave (or in a small
saucepan on the stove), heat the butter until soft and slightly melted
and allow to cool slightly. Whisk in the reminaing ¾ C sugar, coffee,
yogurt (or buttermilk or sour cream) and eggs. In a large bowl, blend
together the flour, chocolate, nuts, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and
cinnamon. Squeeze the zucchini to the wet ingredients and stir to blend.
Pour wet ingredient mixture over the dry ingredient mixture and stir gently
until just blended. Spoon the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread
evenly. Bake at 375˚ for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted
in center comes out clean; do not overbake! Let cool about 10 minutes
before serving or cool completely.
Apple Latkes With Spiced Sour Cream
Ann Muckey, No. 330, Brookfield, IL
8 oz container sour cream
1 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp vanilla extract ¼ tsp ground allspice
¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¾ C water
2 firm apples, unpeeled
¾ tsp baking powder
½ C canola oil, as needed
confectioners sugar for sprinkling
Batter:
1½C all-purpose flour
½ C granulated sugar
To make the spiced sour cream, stir the sour cream, vanilla, and
cinnamon together in a small bowl. Set aside at room temperature
while making the latkes, so mixture loses its chill.
For batter, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and allspice
in a medium bowl. Whisk in the water until barely smooth. Core
apples and cut into ¼ inch dice. Immediately fold the diced apples
into the batter.
Line a baking sheet with a double thickness of paper towels. Heat
the oil over high heat until it begins to simmer. Reduce the heat to
medium. Working in batches, using about ⅓ cup for each latke, pour
the batter into the skillet. Cook until the underside is golden brown,
about 1½ minutes, adjusting the heat as needed so latkes don't burn.
Turn and cook the other side. Transfer to the paper towels to drain
briefly.
It is best to serve each batch immediately after draining. If you wish,
use two skillets to keep them coming quickly. Sprinkle the latkes with
confectioner's sugar. Serve at once with the sour cream placed on the
side. Makes 4 hearty servings.

Information Technology and Secretary Don Nieland, Director
Bonita Fillmore, Jo Hattfield, and Agent Holly Pechota.
Director Bonita had a power point presentation that brought
us up-to-date on goals in financial stability, increasing visibility,
and strengthening lodge performance. We need to get people
under 40 involved in our lodges. We are negative in numbers.
The goal is zero loss in membership in five years. There are
YELL! groups online for people who want to participate that
way. Google Hangout is used. A person can do a project in
their own community. It only takes two members to do an
activity and you don’t have to be a wfla member to participate.
Get people involved and they will want to join later.
Don Nieland congratulated the 50 and 75-year members.
He also told us of a new award to bring younger members to
