Welcome
We are pleased to present your 2017 International Course Guide.
Federation University Australia (FedUni) is delighted to welcome

Current recipient Soimali Fernandes who is studying the Master
of Professional Accounting shares her thoughts about University
life and what the scholarship means to her.
My time at FedUni so far has been really good. I have adapted
to this new student-life and made new friends. Most lecturers
want to help the students get a better grade, therefore
students always seek them out, no matter the problem.
Building on my previous work experience in Timor-Leste, my
goal is to acquire the experience to become an internal
auditor, a management accountant or even a forensic
accountant. My chosen course will provide me with an
accounting degree from a country with a strong tradition in
accounting theory and practice and give me the skills to work
effectively with a number of qualified certified practicing
accountants and chartered accountants currently in
Timor-Leste. Not only that, I will be eligible to enter the CPA
and CA in both Australia and/or New Zealand.
Upon completion of my degree I want to work in an
organisation directly under a certified practicing accountant
or a chartered accountant from Australia or New Zealand. In
doing this I will acquire the necessary skills and experience to
achieve my professional goals. The scholarship awarded by
DFAT has been a step closer on the achievement of this goal.

I enjoyed every day studying at FedUni.
During my time at FedUni, I learned and
changed a lot. I really enjoy my
schooling period and miss the time
there very much. The advantage to me
is not only the academic achievement,
but also the value. I became more
confident and optimistic than before.
This is because I received a lot of help
from the teachers and staff.
The most impressive time was doing
volunteer jobs at orientation day, open
day and so on. I liked sharing my
experience to the new students and
assisting them. It is a good way to
know more people and make more
friends.

My name is Sufiyan Memon. I’m from
Mumbai, India; the land of Bollywood
and spicy food. I came to the city of

of Commerce (Professional
Accounting). Recently, I have accepted
an accounting position at a major firm
in Ballarat utilising the accounting
knowledge I obtained from FedUni.
The important factors that helped me
get a job as an Accountant were
confidence, dedication,

Every moment spent at FedUni,
whether studies, sports, or
extracurricular activities, has benefited
me in some way. I would like to
describe it in the accounting terms: the
capital investment (tuition) initially
thought to be a lot seems much less
now compared to the dividends I have
gained after graduation. An investment
of a life time!

Coming to Federation University
Australia to do my professional
doctorate is one of the best life
decisions that I have made.
When I arrived, I was amazed at the
amount of support that was available
for students and also a very active
international student presence. While I
did not have enough time to partake in
all of the on and off campus activities,
due to study commitments, I knew that
if I wanted any assistance, I could
easily get all the support needed.
The Federation Business School has
very generous staff, including teaching
and non-teaching staff members who
were always there to give me support
even beyond academic support.
It is an honor to have met so many
incredible people during my journey at
Federation University Australia, and
also the fact that I am the first DBA
candidate of Federation University
Australia to finish and submit my final
thesis is something that I am extremely
proud of. I couldn’t have done this
without the support of the Federation
Business School staff members.

Federation University Australia is a
resource hub for students seeking
advanced education and a better
career. The advanced computer labs,
library, career development hub,
learning skills department, international
student support and faculties are well
organised and appreciable. There is
nothing the University has missed to
provide to its students.
I’ve also had a very pleasing academic
experience. All of our classes consist of
less than 25 students which enables us
to receive individual attention from our
faculty. Most of our teachers including
our MPA course coordinator have an
open door policy, which assists
students to seek clarification for their
academic queries easily. The faculties,
in particular Gavin Hurst, also play a
key role in building our profile as a
professional by directing us towards
internships and other career oriented
programs throughout the course.
I would like to express my sincere
gratitude to Talia Barrett, the senior
skills Adviser, who helped me a lot with
my assignments and academic skills.

I really enjoy the friendly environment of
Federation University Australia. I
remember when I started my PhD in
2012, everybody was so nice and
supportive. They all wanted to help new
students, especially international ones,
who have several difficulties at the
beginning.
I am happy that FedUni has maintained
its supportive environment throughout
my studies. As an international student,
I’ve never felt that I am far from my own
country because my FedUni family is
always with me.
Research Services at FedUni acts very
well by providing useful research
workshops and seminars. I learnt how
to research at FedUni.

Studying at Federation University
Australia was a delightful experience of
learning and unlearning, application
and actualisation, within an atmosphere
that is very open to diversity.
The Master of Teaching (Secondary)
course employs a holistic approach to
maximise learning for every student. I
also had a great opportunity to witness
and practically apply classroom
concepts in actual secondary schools
having been on placement.

You’re a teacher or educational
professional and are ready to lead
educational practice, policy and research.
In this course, you will be offered
guidance on how to explore your own
learning priorities, including through
multiple pathways of study that best suit
your professional and personal interests.
One option is the research pathway that
includes coursework and the completion
of a minor thesis (12,000–15,000 words).
Alternatively, you can select a coursework
-only pathway. Major streams include
Diversity and Inclusion, Educational
Leadership, Special Education and
Vocational Education and Training.
This postgraduate course will help you
take your skills from your undergraduate
degree to become a teacher. You may be
looking to change your career or you’ve
decided after finishing your
undergraduate degree, that teaching is
what you really want to do. You will
graduate from this degree with the
confidence and skills to teach in primary
school across Australia and overseas. It
is a hands-on course that gets you out
into the classroom for a minimum of 60
days, where you can put what you’ve
learnt into practice.
If you’re ready for a career change or
want to build on your undergraduate
degree to become a teacher, this course
is for you. You will learn how to engage
with and motivate students from years
6to 12. And we will help you to become
an advocate, supporter and role model
for your students. You can take your pick
of two subjects from biology, drama,
English and more to specialise in. And
when you graduate, you can work in
Australia or overseas. You will spend a
minimum of 60 days in school seeing
how these theories play out. This course

I chose FedUni because of the small
classes they have, I knew this would
mean better interaction with teaching
staff and this would be helpful
throughout my studies
I loved the practical and the technical
aspects of the Bachelor of Engineering
course I studied. We would often study
theory in the lecture and then
practically apply it afterwards. This was
a great way to learn and different to
experiences in China, which is usually
theory driven.
I liked the hands on tutorials where
tutors really supported students. Most
lecturers had an open door policy and
you could go and ask them questions
which was very helpful.
I loved Y Building, you can talk to
lecturers in their offices, the building is
carbon free and from an engineer’s
perspective, designed well with easy
access to classrooms and lecturer
theatres.
In ten years’ time I hope to be a
practical design engineer working in a
company, in which part of the world…I
don’t know.

Yang Zhang
Bachelor of Health Science
(Sport and Exercise Science)
Country of origin: China
My name is Yang Zhang and I am from
China. I am studying the Bachelor of
Health Science, a pathway into the
Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.
Prior to coming to FedUni, I have
completed a Bachelor of Clinical
Medicine. When I was studying this, I
came into contact with rehabilitation as
I hurt my knee and broke my ACL, so I
was really interested in this subject. I
chose to study rehabilitation in Australia
as it is undeveloped in China.
I have three classes each day, in the
rest time I may go to the gym or do
some preview and review. Living on
campus, I have lots of chance to
communicate with other students and
my language improves rapidly. I am so
lucky and happy to study at FedUni, I
really love my program and enjoy my
life here.

You have an interest in figures. In how
companies operate. How to make
businesses profitable. And how to market
these businesses to the right audience.
But you’re also a keen sportsperson,
whether a participant or a supporter. This
double degree can lead to you marketing
major sporting teams, managing the
finances for multi-million dollar sporting
facilities and advising councils on their
recreational facilities. The mix of sports
industry skills and business expertise
doubles your job options when you
graduate and you can even take your
business skills to different industries
altogether.

The course combines the study of
outdoor and environmental education
knowledge, skills and values with the
development of competence and
experience in outdoor activities. Outdoor
activities are viewed as approaches to
gaining access to more natural settings
and as a medium for developing
human/nature relationships. The
theoretical perspective of the course
aims to develop your understanding of
the interdependence of culture and the
natural environment. It also helps in
identifying the influence of cultural beliefs
on environmental and outdoor education
issues and practices.

Bachelor of
International Studies
Country of origin: Singapore
If you think friendly teachers, good
teaching quality and excellent student
support services are very important for
international students, then Federation
University is the best University for you!
Coming from a bustling city, Singapore,
I have never imagined that I will be
studying in a regional university but I
have not regretted studying at FedUni.
The Bachelor of International Studies is
a course that exposes students to
different cultures. The subjects
encourage students to step out of their
comfort zones and talk about
controversial issues. This experience
taught me how to accept and respect
other people’s views and at the same
time gain more insights through the
debates we have in class.

I am studying the Bachelor of
International Studies. When I first
commenced I was scared and anxious
for my assessments. But, FedUni
provides lots of support for
international students. One of my
favourite and the most useful program
for me is the International Language
Support, which has helped me a lot
when I met any difficulties.
Furthermore, FedUni offers lots of
activities for international students.
I like FedUni – in particular, the
environment is a very harmonious
atmosphere for learning. The
surrounding scenery on campus is
beautiful and relaxing. Every day we are
smiling, everybody is very happy when
they meet to talk.

I’m studying the Master of Social Work
(Qualifying) course. The program suited
all my needs as the courses that I
wanted to study were a part of the
curriculum. The most important
advantage of the program is that it is a
qualifying course and does not need a
separate accreditation once the course
is complete. Also, being a regional
University, I got the added advantage. I
love to explore regional and rural areas.
With this course, I want to develop
communities and explore everything
that this awesome Kangaroo nation has
to offer.
The best thing about the Mt Helen
Campus is the greenery surrounding it,
the flora and the fauna and the clean air
it has. If I was to give the stranger a
tour of the Campus, I’d show the
precinct behind the library/café where
one can spot a lot of birds and also see
beautiful swans in the pond across the
alley which leads to the residence.

I chose FedUni because I wanted to
focus on studies and as it is in a

opportunity to explore the beauty of the
country side.
The Master of Social Work has an
interesting curriculum consisting of core
courses and two 70 day field

We have had very good academic
support classes in understanding
Australian education, which is quite
different from the education system in
India. Extra classes and guidance have
always been there to help me improve,
and the International Student Support

Businesses collect huge volumes of data
– it is everywhere. There is an urgent
need for people who have the skills to
identify, interpret and analyse trends from
the collected data. In health, education,
government, in small and large
businesses, big data is used to make
informed decisions. You will study areas
such as information and data analysis,
allowing you to discover and quantify
patterns. You are introduced to the
appropriate methods and tools that are
applied to retrieve, transform, organise,
visualise, and analyse data. Your final
year project will give you the opportunity
to put your learning into practice as you
analyse large data sets.
Equip yourself with critical knowledge in
data and network security. Employment
in this area has experienced strong
growth over the last 10 years. Your
specialisation in security will allow you to
be on the frontline of the war in
cyberspace and to become familiar with
the methods attackers use. You will learn
to investigate how security breaches
occur, how private information is
vulnerable and ways to protect it. You will
develop an understanding of the security
models provided by major operating
systems involved in modern computer
networks. Through lecture and lab work
you will delve into networks, their
protocols and hardware and investigate
how these systems can be vulnerable to
a malicious attacks.

Country of origin: Russia
Coming from a big city such as
Moscow I've always wanted to
experience life in a small city, which
was one of the reasons why I
considered Federation University.
I loved all of my teachers, each of them
demonstrated so much passion for
what they are doing, that we simply
couldn't stay indifferent to the subjects
they were teaching. It was clear that
they actually cared and it made a big
difference for me and was a great
motivational factor as well.
Moreover, they always were there for
us. If we had any problems/issues they
always were happy to help. I liked how
informal interaction between teachers
and students is, as in my country there
is a massive distance between
university teachers and students.

I have recently graduated from the
Master of Information Technology at
FedUni. The reason I chose this course
at FedUni was simple: I like IT and I like
the feeling when I see the code I write
running perfectly.
FedUni provides various courses and
the teachers are experienced, also very
kind. Most of the assignments are not
very hard. However, you still need to
invest a lot of effort into it to get a good
mark.
My last assignment at the end of the
course was to develop an iPad app for
Narmbool, which is a part of the major
tourism attraction Sovereign Hill. The
process was tough but quite enjoyable
and I’ve learned a lot of new
techniques. I’d like to become an app
developer for my future career.

I chose to study at Federation
University ultimately because of the
curriculum. The Acting program has
gone above and beyond in exceeding
my expectations. What I enjoy most is
the quality of training; the instructors
have such a high level of expertise and
experience and have really structured
the program in such a way so that you
can get the most out of it. I also love
my classmates, who are fabulous,
creative and brilliant people and the
strength of the performing arts
programs.
The best aspects of the program are
definitely the opportunities to perform
both in Ballarat and Melbourne. This
ultimately helps us gain external work
experience before graduating with
practical and technical skills.

My time at the Arts Academy was
greatly enhanced by the ‘family’ feel
that made up a massive support
network. This community we all studied
in was made up not only of peers,
lecturers and colleagues, but also of
friends and allies as well.
Coming from New Zealand, I felt
warmly welcomed. I was never treated
differently or left out in any way. The
absolute best part of the Arts Academy
is its sense of community. Through its
support everyone is able to delve deep
into their studies and into themselves,
and immerse in whatever part of theatre
or the arts that particularly interests
them, with no judgment and only
unconventional positive regard.
My time at the Arts Academy was a
thrilling, self-explorative, skill-building
adventure that completely reassured
and reaffirmed my passions for theatre.
You love singing, dancing and acting.
You also don’t mind being the centre of
attention and the idea of working on
stages and in front of the camera excites
you. Our three year degree will help you
to become a multi-talented performer.
You will study acting, dance, music,
singing and voice and will put on shows
throughout your degree. Along with very
practical classes, workshops and
performances, you will also delve into the
history and theory of music theatre. You
will learn about the people and places
that have shaped the industry and how
you can prepare for the future of music
theatre. This course is nationally
recognised within the Performing Arts
Industry.
