ABOUT THE
COVER
The heat of summer
is here in full force but
good fishing can still be
enjoyed on
Tennessee lakes and
streams. Night fishing
is popular at this time of
year as well as stream
fishing. This young lady
on the cover this month
did the smart thing - she
used a professional
guide, in this case Wayne
Smith, to catch this nice
striper on Norris Lake.

WATTS BAR LAKE
Watts Bar Fishing Report:
The lake is at summer pool. The water surface temperature is cooler than previously reported. The average temperature is in the
lower 80’s. A lot of anglers are catching white and striped bass in the tailwaters below Fort Loudoun Dam. Topwater lures, spoons
and spinner-type lures are being used more often than other baits. Live bait is always the best bait. Catfish are being caught by
those drifting in the main channel. Bass are being caught more often in the primary water. Deep water structure is the most popular
area being fished. Schooling bass can be located by looking for surface activty. Crankbaits, worms, jigs and spoons are being used
most often for bait. Topwater lures are good for surface schooling bass. Crappie are being caught most often at night while fishing
underneath some type of light source. Minnows and/or jigs are being used for bait. Bluegill are being caught near river rock walls.

Melton Hill Fishing Summary:
It might be too hot for fishing during the
day unless you fish early morning or in the
evening, but night fishing is best right now.
All fishing seems to be a little slow during
the day. So, night fishing is a good alternative to beat the heat during the day. Early
morning is the best time for topwater bass.
Jerkbaits and buzzbaits are doing fair until
the sun gets up over the trees. After that,
chatterbaits in white or chartreuse along
with spinnerbaits are doing O.K. Crankbaits are also catching a few until the sun
gets straight over head. Then, you have to
go a little deeper with some deep divers
or jig and pig. Shakyhead or Texas-rigged
Brushhogs are doing fair also. The daytime
fishing has slowed down a lot except for
the early morning and evening bite. You
can still catch some good bass during the
day, but when the midday sun is high in the
sky the bass seem to be a little harder to
find. Crickets are a good choice for some
good-size bluegill, but you may have to fish
a little deeper to find the bigger ones. There
have been some nice channel cats caught
on beef liver and also on fresh shrimp.
There have also been some huge stripers caught at the mouth of the steam plant
on live skipjack. The muskies are slowing
down, but have been spotted downstream
around reactor bend and even farther
down.

Chickamauga Fishing Report
The lake is at full pool. The water surface temperature
is in the 80’s. Bass are being caught while schooling. Look for surface activity and cast topwater lures,
jigs and spoons into the area. Most fish being caught
while schooling are smaller fish. Look for the bigger
fish near structure in the main channel. Crankbaits
and plastic worms are being used most often for bait.
Moving water is a plus. Catfish are being caught by
drifters while using all the typical catfish baits. Bluegill are being caught in deep water near humps, and
breaks in the river and behind current breaks. Rockfish and white bass are being caught in the tailwaters.
Some white bass are being caught schooling along
with bass in the mid to lower end of the lake. Crappie
are being caught at night while fishing underneath
lights. Jigs and/or minnows are being used for bait.

New State Fishing Record Set for Yellow Perch
NASHVILLE --- A new state fishing record for the yellow perch has been established on Parksville Lake in Polk County by an angler from neighboring Bradley County, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has confirmed.
Jackie V. Kersey, of Cleveland, landed a 2 lbs, 2 oz. yellow perch that measured 14 _ inches in length. He used a minnow on a 10lb. test line while fishing with a 7-foot Berkley Bionix rod and Pfleuger Gold Medalist Pro reel.
The new record surpasses a tie for the previous record of 1 lb., 15 oz., shared by a pair of anglers. Danny Casson caught his fish
in 1992 while fishing on the nearby Hiwassee River. David C. Lyons landed his fish in August 1996 while fishing on Melton Hill
Reservoir.
The criteria to be considered for a state record fish along with the new record application and instructions, state records and fishing license information are in the 2010 TWRA Tennessee Fishing Guide. Information is also available on the TWRA website at by
clicking on “Fishing” located on the left side of the home page.

FORT LOUDON / TELLICO
TELLICO RESERVOIR FISHING REPORT
WATER CONDITIONS:
The predicted water level at the Dam is holding at approx. 812 ft. above sea level. The
surface temperatures are still in the high-80’s
with slightly cooler temperatures in the early
morning hours. The water is clear over the
entire reservoir with just a slight green tint.
SUMMARY:
Bass are hitting big black spinnerbaits at
night and the bigger the blade the better. The
daytime fishing is still very slow, whether it
is bass fishing or any other type of fishing.
Unless you fish very early in the morning or in
the evening, the heat is very hard to deal
with during the day. However, the big cats are hitting, especially at night. If you want to catch some bass, the best time
is from daylight until about 10:00 a.m. or from about 7:00 p.m.
until around 1:00 a.m. You can catch some during the heat of
the day, but the bigger fish seem to be hitting very early in the
morning or in the evening. Early morning is a good time for the
topwater bite. Evening until midnight is a good jig bite and also
a good spinnerbait or crankbait bite. Nighttime fishing is in full
swing. Just about all the walleye and a big part of the bigger
bass are hitting better at night. Crankbaits retrieved parallel
with the shoreline are catching some very nice largemouth and
smallmouth. Jointed Rapalas pitched up under the overhanging
trees and bushes are catching some nice largemouth as well
as smallmouth. The crappies are slowing down, but can still be
caught in the submerged timber and brush. Trolling or float and
minnow are the two best ways to catch some crappie. You may
have to go as deep as 20 feet to get the bigger ones. Bluegill
are doing well also, and seem to be congregated around the
submerged timber and brush.

CRAPPIE
10-15 ft.
Slow.
Crappie seem to have moved back out to deeper, cooler water
and congregated in the brush piles and submerged timber.
Black and clear flake along with chartreuse with red jig head
are good color choices. A medium action rod with 6-8 lb. test
line is a good choice. Island Creek and Clear Creek are also
producing some good stringers and should continue to improve.
For the most part the crappie have slowed way down just about
everywhere, but you can still catch some nice ones if you slow
down and fish the brushpiles and downed timber with the old
float and minnow. You may have to fish as deep as 30 feet but
most of the better sized crappie should be close to the thermocline. 12-15 feet is good depth to start searching for crappies
this time of year.

WALLEYE
12-18 ft.
Better at night.
There are still some walleye being caught, but you have to go out at night to catch them. Trolling crankbaits or nightcrawler harnesses are both doing O.K. The average size is about 2.5-3.5 lbs. The submerged islands around the
Toqua area are a good place to start looking for some nice-size walleyes. Another good place to start looking for some
nighttime walleyes is around the islands at the Clear Creek and Fork Creek area. Redfin reeled very slowly at night is a
good choice in lures.
BASS
1-10 ft.
Good at night.
Nighttime bass fishing is here. Big black thumper blade spinnerbaits and 6” Berkley powerbait lizards are doing well at
night, along with 10-inch red shad worm. But, during the day white spinnerbaits with silver or gold willow leaf blades
are doing fair for bass right now. Chartreuse is doing pretty good also. Crankbaits that imitate baitfish are producing
pretty well also. Shad Raps and Rattle Traps are two very good choices. Blue and chrome is hard to beat in the Rattle
Trap and Silver and black with orange belly is a good choice in the Shad Rap. Jerkbaits are catching a few along with
swimbaits. Also, there are a few spotted bass being caught along with the others. Shakyhead worms are starting to
catch a few and also the float and fly for smallmouth. Green pumpkin brushhogs on shakyhead hooks are still doing
fair. And even the spotted bass love the shakyhead no matter whether it’s a worm or a lizard or a Brushhog or even a
Critter Craw.

Hunters Reminded About 2010 Special
Season Deer Changes
NASHVILLE --- Hunters are reminded by the
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency the
special season fall turkey hunts and county deer
quota hunts have been changed to non-quota
hunts in many counties across the state.
The change will eliminate the need for hunters
to obtain a quota permit prior to the hunt. Hunters will be able to participate in any non-quota
hunt in a county where the hunt is established.
A Type 094 non-quota permit will be required
except for sportsmen license holders (including
lifetime licenses) and individuals eligible for the
landowner exemption.

CATFISH
5-50 ft.
Very good, especially at night.
The big cats are hitting all over the reservoir and nighttime is the best time to catch them. Chicken livers,
nightcrawlers, fresh or frozen shrimp, cut bait, live bluegill or whatever your favorite catfish bait is, it’s time for
some big cats. You can catch them just about anywhere
in the lake you want to fish. If you use frozen shrimp
it’s best to soak it in a little water with some garlic salt
mixed in overnight. Below dams is a prime place to fish
for big cats, but you must be extremely cautious below
any dam because of the swift moving water and the
undertow. Wear your life jacket anytime you are in a
boat below a dam.

Norris Fishing Summary:
Many of the fish which have been caught have come from the 30-foot depth for those fishing the lower half of the lake. Upper
reaches have produced fish at a shallower depth. This is typical of summertime fishing in the reservoir. The typical, summertime
pattern continues – nights and early mornings being the best times to fish. Three days with some cloud cover and rain perked
up the catch, slightly. There is no detectable change in the pattern since last week. WALLEYE anglers should concentrate their
trolling/jigging depth at the 23 to 30 foot depth range on the lower half of the reservoir. That is the depth of the comfort range of
walleye: 68 to 75 degrees. STRIPED BASS are hitting at night and in the very early morning hours for those tightlining live shad or

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee’s long-standing tradition of hand-drawn duck blind
drawings will be held at the usual sites across the state on Saturday, August
7.
While hand drawings will be held for the majority of the locations, a computerized drawing system for blind sites on Bogota and the new Thorny Cypress
Wildlife Management Area in Dyer County and the four units on the Chickamauga WMA (Candies Creek, Johnson Bottoms, Rogers Creek, and Yellow
Creek) will be in place for this season.

WATAUGA / SOUTH HOLSTON
New South Holston Lake License Now Available
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources
Agency and the Virginia Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries license agreement is now available which will allow the residents of Tennessee
and Virginia more convenient fishing opportunities
on South Holston Lake.
The new South Holston License became available
July 1. Tennessee and Virginia residents may purchase the license, along with having their own state resident
fishing license in order to fish all of South Holston Lake. This
includes all impounded portions of the lake below full pool
elevation of 1,730 feet, including the confluence of the Middle
Fork and South Fork Holston Rivers and the South Fork
Holston River upstream to the Route 710 Bridge at Alvarado,
Va.
Previously, Tennessee residents were required to purchase a
non-resident license to fish in the Virginia portion and likewise for Virginia residents wanting to fish in the Tennessee
portion.
Tennessee residents can purchase the South Holston Lake
License Type 063 for a cost of $21. Tennessee residents
must purchase the license at Tennessee license agents.
The license is required in addition to the Tennessee resident
license (including Sportsman and Lifetime license holders)
only when fishing in the Virginia portion of the lake.
For residents of Tennessee, a regular fishing license (Type
001) plus a Tennessee trout license (Type 022), or a Sportsman or Lifetime license, along with the South Holston Lake
License would allow them to fish for any species in the Virginia portion of the lake. Tennessee resident youth, age 11 and under, are exempt from license or permit in Virginia when accompanied by
a properly licensed adult.
In Virginia, the license is called “South Holston Reservoir Fishing” and is $21 as well. Virginia residents must purchase the license in Virginia.
South Holston Lake comprises an area of 6,336 acres in upper East Tennessee and 1,244 acres in
Virginia. Anglers find good populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, rainbow trout,
black crappie, bluegill, as well as rainbow trout, brown trout, and lake trout.

94 Acres of Milo Planted at Old Hickory WMA
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources
Agency is continuing to update waterfowl hunters on its
annual planting of crops for wildlife which was delayed
this year due to the May flooding.
One of the popular waterfowl areas in Middle Tennessee
is the Old Hickory Wildlife Management Area, located
near Gallatin and Lebanon. TWRA managed to plant 94
acres of milo by the end of June in the low-lying fields at
the unit.
Provided that there are no more downpours as the
historic May rain, Old Hickory WMA is expected to
have good crops, according to TWRA officials. The Old
Hickory WMA staff is continuing to work on the area’s
roads and getting the pumping sites ready.
More information concerning Tennessee’s wildlife management areas, including Cheatham and Haynes Bottom
WMAs in Middle Tennessee, can be found by clicking
here.
Waterfowl blind drawings will be held across Tennessee
on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Dale Hollow Fishing Report
Fishing is fair. The water surface temperature is
86; lake is falling. A few walleye are being caught
on the lower end of lake, while trolling red banks in
35-40 feet of water. Bass fishing is fair at night on
spinenerbaits and soft, plastics while fishing points
and grass in 15-20 feet of water.
TWRA Continues Updates on WMA Planting
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is continuing its effort to provide updates on its annual planting of crops for wildlife, including waterfowl areas that have been delayed
this year due to the May floods.
Officials report that at Camden Wildlife Management, corn has been planted around blinds 74-77,
112-116, and 101-103. Corn will be planted in the rest of the Triangle fields, the 20s and 30s this
week unless prevented by heavy rains.
Big Sandy and Gin Creek WMAs have corn planted around every blind with the exception of blind
9. The flood deposited about three feet of sand in the field at blind 9 making it impossible to plant.
As reported earlier, the pump at Barkley WMA has been repaired and pumping started June 21.
The area received about six inches of rain on June 26-27. The pump will run until the area is dry.
As the fields dry, corn will be planted until about July 9 and then millet will be planted in all areas
that remain.

The pumps at West Sandy WMA have been brokendown since June 18. The Tennessee Valley Authority is
in the process of repairing the pumps. The area received
about three inches of rain last week and the water is rising on the fields that are usually planted with corn. The
prospects for planting corn on this area are bleak at this
late date.

CENTER HILL LAKE
Meadow Park Lake “Old City Lake”, located on City Lake Rd just off Hwy 101 S. in Cumberland County, is a prime fishing
spot for black spotted crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill and shellcrackers. March and April are excellent spring months for
finding crappie and bass on beds. April and May the bluegill and shellcrackers are easily caught using earthworms and crickets.
The lake has yielded 12 & 13 pound catfish in the past couple of years. Grass carp are plentiful and weigh in at around 23 - 27
pounds.
Creek channels and old stream beds are easily located due to the clearness of the water. The lake has had some stocking
and habitat management implemented over the last five years. Both live and artificial baits have proved successful on the lake.
The 300-acre lake is a protected watershed impoundment owned by the City of Crossville. Boats with gasoline motors are
allowed - however, skiing, jet skis, and other personal watercraft are not allowed. There is a special permit fee per person and
ramp that you have to purchase at the lake office if launching a boat. The park has a small campground with full amenities. The
campground boasts a new bath house and RV dumping station. Our new covered boat storage slips have recently been rennovated and slips rent by season, month, or day. You can also enjoy our floating fishing pier. The office has a few boats and some
electric motors to rent, ice, snacks, licenses, fishing tackle, redworms, nightcrawlers, and crickets for sale.

Hudgen’s Slough, Johnson’s Creek, and Pardue Pond Refuge.
Bush hogging has begun on the levees at Cheatham WMA. After the
bush hogging is completed, they will be disked to remove the ruts, gullies and holes and planted in winter wheat and rye.
Due to the flood damage that was sustained, hunters drawn for blind
sites will have to build new blinds.

Fort Campbell Streams Receive Second Of Three TWRA Summer Trout Stockings
NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has released about 900 rainbow trout into several streams that run near and through Fort Campbell, which straddle the Kentucky and Tennessee state
lines.
TWRA, along with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, have been stocking this
area for many years, with Kentucky releasing trout in the spring and TWRA letting them go in the summer
months.
“We made our first stocking of the year a few days ago, and we have one more to go,” said Jim Pipas, a
biologist for the TWRA. “We will stock trout again in mid-August.”
Trout released by TWRA ranged in size from 8 to 10 inches long. Locations of the release areas were Boiling Springs Road Bridge (the first bridge north of Pump-House Road), Mabry Road Culvert Bridge, Kinser
Pond; Service Road Bridge, and 101st Airborne Road Bridge.
To learn more about fishing on the military base, including what licenses or permits are needed and where
stocking sites are located, contact Fort Campbell Outdoor Recreation at (270) 798-2175.
