“ZEUTERING” CLASS HELD AT SOCIETY
Some of the Society's
veterinarians were at
a one day training
seminar for Zinc neutering, a non-surgical
castration procedure
that offers a cheaper
and less invasive
alternative to surgery. A few dogs
were selected based
on age and physical
criteria. The Zinc
neutering (Zeutering)
procedure is fast,
nearly painless and
only a mild sedative

requires no surgical
preparation. It has fewer complications than traditional neuter surgery & the
dogs receive a small tattoo to indicate they have had the procedure. This is
necessary because the testicles are left intact. It is very important to note that
the act of neutering DOES NOT take away the dog's urge for male dominance, humping, etc.,

SOCIETY STAFFERS ATTEND EQUINE
EXTRACTION SEMINAR
A lecture & demonstration was held on the use
and when to use equipment, i.e., sling for field
extraction, an accident
scenario, stall extraction,
for a helicopter rescue &
other safety methods for
equines and rescuers
The Society’s efforts are
for our staff to gain
knowledge and experience in all aspects of animal rescue. In one of the
most recent training sessions, the Society sent two
employees to meet Lucky, a 600 pound rubber articulated horse, who
needed to be rescued by a helicopter, saved using a sling, a highway
accident scenario, stall extractions, extrication from fences, ravines and
streams and other creative hazards. This training program is open to NJ
veterinarians, Penn Vet students, NJ first responders including fire,
police, forestry and CERT (Community Emergency Response Teams) and
CART (County Animal Response Teams) members and will be
coordinated in collaboration with the New Jersey Trail Ride Association.
A few weeks prior to this training session, Popcorn Park Director, John
Bergmann enrolled in an all-day seminar on NJ venomous snake
response team. In November, several of our staff will enroll in the SafeCapture Chemical Immobilization of Animals which will cover techniques
in species commonly encountered in situations such as
Disaster Preparedness, feral dogs, feral cats,
escaped livestock and much, much more.
Please know that your donation dollars are used to help animals and to
keep us updated on minimizing stress on animals
in various emergency scenarios.

Dr. Adriana Hordynsky mans the mobile spay/neuter unit.
The Society’s mobile spay/neuter unit has been bringing spay/neuter
services as well as wellness exams and routine veterinary services to
various locations throughout NJ. The Wellness Clinics offer pet owners
check-ups, vaccines, heartworm tests, Lyme, FIV/FeLV, etc. deworming,
nail trim, ear cleanings, microchipping, heartworm, flea & tick medications. The mobile clinic has special feral cat days for neutering &
basic needs, and pit bull days for those who otherwise may not have
easy access to vet services. These efforts are brought to local communities where residents may be less likely to bring their animals for vet
care. For more information on a mobile unit in your area,

LONGSTREET FARM DISMISSES
POPCORN PARK'S OFFER
FOR FREE NEUTERING OF MALE ANIMALS
After stories which appeared in the
HUMANE NEWS, local newspapers,
Facebook, blogs, demonstrations,
and educational outreach, the public
is now becoming more informed of
the issue of animals being routinely
killed for “younger models”. One of
the pigs at Longstreet Farm in
Holmdel Park gave birth to 6 piglets.
Although concerned residents tried
to save mother and piglets, the
piglets were sent to slaughter, 31
“older” chickens were sent for 50
cents a pound. The guinea hens and
birds were sent to a market in
Manheim, PA. Seven ewes were sold
with a credit to be applied to the
purchase of a team of mules.
According to a report we received, a

Christmas party. Chickens which
were purchased for “educational cooking activities” would either sell to a farmer or
market as the Park System no longer intends to use them for on-site cooking activities.
The chickens were slaughtered in the woodshed adjacent to Longstreet Farm by
beheading using a hatchet.
In order to quell the vicious cycle of allowing animals to be born there and then
sending them off to slaughter, Popcorn Park has been offering to neuter all male
farm animals AT NO CHARGE – FREE!!! In this way, they can get out of the slaughter business.
The Society took one of their pigs, Posie, pictured above, who was scheduled for
slaughter. She is an amazing sweetheart who loves people – she rubs up against
them and waits for head scratching.
People can help by going to Change.org/Longstreetfarm

ALDF SUES EGG PRODUCERS FOR
FALSE ADVERTISING
The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) is filing a class action lawsuit against
California egg producer Judy’s Family Farm Organic Eggs (Judy’s Eggs”) owned
by Petaluma Egg Farm for false advertising. The packaging implies hens have
access to natural outdoor environment. “Free range”, “Cage free” does not mean
chickens roam free … they may be crowded together in confined space. Judy’s
“Family Farm” is an industrial shed where hens are imprisoned indoors. If you
have purchased Judy’s Eggs mistakenly believing the hens had outdoor access,
please contact legalcase@aldf@org.
BURGER KING DAIRY SUPPLIER EXPOSED FOR
SADISTIC ANIMAL ABUSE
Mercy for Animals’s (MFA) hidden camera has exposed sadistic animal torture
at Bettencourt Dairies – a Burger King dairy supplier in Idaho. Workers &
management viciously beat & shock cows & violently twist their tails to inflict
pain; they are viewed repeatedly shocking a downed cow & then dragging
her by the neck using a chain attached to a tractor; sick or injured cows suffer
from open wounds, broken bones & infected udders & left to suffer without
vet care. Three workers have already been charged with criminal animal cruelty. You can take action now – if you want to see the actual videotape of cruelty log on to burgerkingcruelty.com

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART’S CAFÉ
MENU FOR HORSEMEAT
HAS BEEN REMOVED
Unbelievable as it seems, we have just discovered that M.Wells
Dinette, the café at New York’s Museum of Modern Art PS1 in
Queens, serves horse meat imported from Canada. According to
PETA, the horror that the horses experience is archaic. An undercover video taken inside one Quebec slaughterhouse revealed that
at least 40% of the horses were still conscious after receiving a
captive-bolt shot to the head. One horse suffered through an agonizing 11 shots before finally collapsing. These beautiful animals
– many were once children’s pets, former racing thoroughbreds,
ponies, are crammed into trailers & trucked to slaughterhouses in
Canada & Mexico. As distasteful and abusive as this is, that a
prominent institution for modern and contemporary artwork
would serve horse meat on their menu is unconscionable. For
more information, log on to peta.org and click on their Action
Alert section.
As we go to press, we have discovered that due to the huge outcry against the serving of horsemeat on the menu, they have
removed it from their menu. They will still serve foie gras, braised
veal cheeks, braised rabbit, etc.
DISABLED VET & SERVICE DOG’S
HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE WITH
UNITED AIRLINES
Jim Stanek served 3 tours of duty in Iraq & still suffers from PTSD
due to the effects of a traumatic brain injury. The disabled veteran is founder of Paw and Stripes and travels with his service dog,
Sarge. While traveling with his dog, two separate United Airline
employees kicked his service dog & one United Airlines employee
asked if he was "retarded". The employees said they were "startled" by the dog's presence. One kick was hard enough to make
Sarge, leap into Stanek's lap. After 48 hours of delays, insults &
mistreatment, two helpful United Airline employees were able to
come to Stanek's aid.
NIH "RETIRES" 110 CHIMPS ... BUT
ONLY 10 GO TO CHIMP HAVEN ....
THE REMAINDER GO FOR RESEARCH
The National Institutes of Health would want you to believe that
they will be “retiring” 110 chimpanzees from experiments -- but
actually 100 of them will be sent to Texas Biomed Research
Institute (TBRI), a laboratory that was fined for multiple violations:
$25,000 for violating the Animal Welfare Act. Only 10 will go to
Chimp Haven, the federal chimpanzee sanctuary. The NIH uses
taxpayer funds for “educating the public” regarding the “importance of chimpanzees in biomedical research”. The government
could save over $250 million by phasing out the use of chimps.
TBRI has also received a grant from NIH which expressly allows
for experimentation on about 170 chimps now housed at
Alamogordo Primate Facility where they have been subjected to
research since 2001. Please contact your Senators &
Representatives urging them to pass the Great Ape Protection &
Cost Savings Act (H.R.1513/S.810). A groundswell of support is
needed to have the chimps given the permanent retirement they
deserve. For more information, contact www.pcrm.org

Aquarium in Chicago, SeaWorld facilities in Orlando, FL, San Antonio, TX & San
Diego, CA. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, Russian capture methods
are notoriously inhumane, involving driving methods to herd animals to shore,
cause panic, distress, physical harm & even death. There are currently 40 belugas living in sub-standard conditions at a facility in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We
need a groundswell of support to urge them to abandon their plans to rip
these animals away from their families, homes & freedom.
Mystic Aquarium is hoping to receive some Belugas if the application is
approved for the Georgia Aquarium. There is no word on when the government will make a decision on the permit.

A video showing Young Calicoe with a group of animals on his property and
mentioning dogfights, gambling, etc., prompted local authorities to investigate.
All of the dogs and roosters were confiscated by the Michigan Humane Society.
Calicoe said the video was “entertainment” and he does not participate in dogfighting. The matter is presently under investigation by the Wayne County

THE WHALE is the true story of a young, wild orca whale, nicknamed Luna,
who lost contact with his family off the coast of British Columbia & turned up
alone in a narrow stretch of sea between mountains. If an orca is separated from
its family, it usually dies. Since there were no orcas, there were people in boats &
on the share so he tried to make contact. Most people welcomed him. And in
Nootka Sound, it sent an open-hearted child. What will happen with this
stranger? Maybe it will be just like what happened when a little lonely whale
tried to make friends with humans. THE WHALE celebrates the life of a smart,
friendly, determined, transcendent being from the world of the sea who
appeared among us like a promise out of the blue: that the greatest secrets in life
are still to be discovered. Friendship is bigger than we know. You can log on to

SOCIETY SAVES SNAPPING TURTLE,
PERFORMS SURGERY ON BROKEN JAW
LEFT: Circle shows split in the turtle's jaw. RIGHT: Dr. Jonathan
Bergmann operated on the
snapper who went through the
operation successfully.
When a good Samaritan saw
a snapping turtle hit by car,
she stopped and with the
help of another concerned
motorist, they slid the injured
turtle into a box. Since the
good Samaritan lived close to
our Popcorn Park Director,
John Bergmann, he had unexpected company for the night. After examination, the snapper was found to
have a broken lower jaw, but everything else seemed fine & so he was made
comfortable for the night. John’s son, Dr. Jonathan Bergmann, checked on
the turtle & found the break to be bad; it would not heal enough for him
to catch and eat food. The turtle
was sedated, & they obtained an
orthopedic pack along with the
DeWalt drill and bits. Dr.
Jonathan made a makeshift tube
to intubate him & it worked great
and allowed him to safely complete the procedure.
The snapping turtle is healing perfectly & will be kept at Popcorn
Park until next spring.

POPCORN PARK DIRECTOR RELOCATES
ERRANT RATTLESNAKE & ATTENDS
POISONOUS SNAKE SEMINAR
Popcorn Park Zoo Director John Bergmann removed the
"cooperative" snake & relocated her elsewhere.
When an Ocean County homeowner checked his mailbox, he found a
snake at the end of his driveway. The snake was blocking the mailbox and
some of the road. The police were called to scare the snake away and
even diverted traffic. The police kept traffic and people away until they
called Popcorn Park. Popcorn Park Director John Bergmann arrived and
found the timber rattle snake to be somewhat cooperative. He moved her
to a safer area into the woods and away from homes and traffic. Shortly
thereafter, the NJ Division of
Fish & Wildlife held a seminar on poisonous snakes.
Although John has been helping errant snakes for years,
he has finally “earned” a certificate and he is now certified by State Fish & Wildlife.

being released back to nature.

Champ the Yorkshire Terrier.
Toms River According to
Champ’s parents: “Champ has been a member of our family since Aug.
8th. We decided to keep the name Champ because he responds to it.
He’s a feisty little guy & keeps us on our toes but we love him. He has a
ton of toys but likes his ‘chew ropes’ best. His health is excellent & our
vet was impressed with what a self-confident little guy Champ is. The
staff love him too. In fact, when walking him on the leash, people stop
in the street to say how cute he is … & he just laps up the attention he
gets! We’ve put up a big wire crate for him & he knows he’s going to
get a couple of treats when he does. I think he must have been crated
prior to our adopting him because initially, we gave him the run of the
house & he damaged a lot of things. Maybe he had some separation
anxiety or maybe he just didn’t
know what to do in such a big
space. I think he feels safer in the
crate. But he’s not in it for very
long When we’re home, he’s out
of the crate & in fact, he sleeps
on our bed with us at night.
Champ loves to be outdoors. We
have a big fenced-in patio too &
laugh at the way he marches
back & forth ‘protecting’ the
house from a bird or squirrel that
dares to stray on our lawn.”
We think this adorable Yorkshire
Terrier found a champion home
for himself!

Saint Francis of Assisi is celebrated Oct. 4th by the Blessing of the Animals. Rev. John
Cardello came out to celebrate the patron saint of animals by blessing the residents
of Popcorn Park. The weather was beautiful as the Reverend walked through and
blessed the many inhabitants of the park. Rev. Cardello has done this for the last
couple years and has got to know some of the animals here very well, so it gave
him a chance to spend some time with his friends Princess and Mickey.
Boo Boo was once a
petting zoo attraction in
Iowa. When her owner
felt she was no longer of
interest, he traded her in
for a car at a used car
dealership. The dealer
thought she’d be a great attraction for his car business, but soon found he needed a permit, which he was
not able to get. Luckily for Boo Boo, she found her way to Popcorn Park where she enjoys a spacious area
with a waterfall and pool. All she really needs is you ... can you give Boo Boo a bear hug and sponsor her?
Mickey is a mildly handicapped
Appaloosa who came to us when
one of his owners passed away. The
other owner was unable to afford
his care, and with Mickey being blind
in one eye and lame, he didn’t face
good prospects of finding another
home.The surviving owner couldn’t
bear sending Mickey to auction, and
then found Popcorn Park. A handsome boy, Mickey is also alucky one.
He’s quite friendly and wonders if
he might be the horse you’d love to
sponsor.
If you haven’t yet been to Popcorn Park, come down and visit! Our
unique sanctuary caters to wildlife, farm animals, exotics and birds
that have been abused, abandoned, exploited, injured, handicapped, etc. The park is open daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. On
Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s Day, Popcorn Park closes at
2 p.m. so that staff can be with their families.
Our current admission fee is $5 for adults, and $4 for children under
12 and senior citizens.
If you would like to support one of our residents, the donation cost
is only $4.00 a month, for which you will receive a color photo of
your animal and an update every 4 months, (which includes a holiday card), a membership card, plus free admission to Popcorn Park
with presentation of your card. For a copy of the Popcorn Park
Wildlife Club booklet to help you choose the animal you wish to
sponsor, order on Page 21.
You can also sponsor the Popcorn Park residents on our website at
www.popcornparkzoo.org and click on Wildlife Club. There is no
required time limit – you can sponsor for as long as you’d like. Any
donated funds that exceed the care given for a particular animal will
be applied to the care of other Popcorn Park residents.
Princess and her sister
Babe once belonged to
the late Doris Duke
who raised them with
the best of everything,
including summers in
Rhode Island. But
when Ms. Duke passed
away, and then later
Babe, the keepers of
the Duke estate didn’t
want the responsibility
of Princess’ care. And
so she joined the
Popcorn Park family where she is often featured in photo ops and has earned
her keep in graham crackers by picking NFL games each week. You can visit her
on our web site at ahscares.org and see who she’s picked each week.

TWO UNLIKELY SOULS COMFORTED EACH
OTHER AFTER BEING ABUSED/UNWANTED
& DUMPED AT VET HOSPITAL
A physically & emotionally exhausted
Pit Bull passed out at a vet’s office &
the Chihuahua pup followed, stood
guard, & fell asleep on him.
Right: A much-improved
Pit Bull, now named Big
Daddy, loves people &
most of his physical
scars have disappeared.
Below: Aliyah the
Chihuahua pup played
among the holiday costumes & tried on a
bumble bee suit.
The circumstances surrounding the discovery of a male pit bull terrier and a
terrier pup together as strays in the
upper Vailsburg section of Newark are
not known. They went briefly to a veterinary hospital & the Society was
contacted. A picture going out over
the internet showed a bonding
between the pup and the pit bull that
was quite a heartbreaker. Obviously,
the pit bull had been physically and
emotionally exhausted. Since they
came into the Society close to 11 p.m.,
they were separated for the night. The
next morning they were reunited but
neither seemed to be interested in the other.
Sadly, Big Daddy’s injuries indicate he had been in dogfights and he does not get
along with other animals. Big Daddy is somewhat traumatized by the changes that
have gone on over the past several days. He is about 6 months old and was either
lost, stolen or strayed and someone decided to use him in their dogfighting.
He accepts Aliyah for short periods of time but our concern involves his possible
irritation with this little dog if there is no supervision. Aliyah is about 2 months
old and barely 3 pounds.
The story given by someone on the internet stated that the dogs were dumped at
Fairfield Emergency Hospital. According to the report: ... He seemed to have neurological problems; he walked all over the office, exhausted & the little one fol-
lowed him everywhere. She cried
when separated from
him for even a
minute. He finally
passed out on the rug
& she stood guard,
then slept on him".
The writer went on to
say that they had "no
choice" but to call
AHS.
We are not the enemy
.... the person who
had these dogs is.
At another shelter,
they would not have
been given the care
and concern that the Associated Humane Societies gives.
A temperament evaluation for Big Daddy indicates that he is very
affectionate with people, comfortable with the human touch &
very people focused. He takes treats gently. Big Daddy needs a
strong, experienced owner that is aware of his past and can control
him outside with other dogs. He needs to be adopted where he
will be the only dog.
Big Daddy's file number is 112445-M and Aliyah is 112447-F.

weeks until he arrived at Popcorn Park. Below:
Deformity of Kermit’s front legs.

The Society received an alert from animal lovers about a
needy pup at the Humane Society of Greenwood South
Carolina. Kermit was a young pup found walking down
a busy highway all alone. His front feet were deformed
with rickets and he was infested with worms, underweight and anemic. For a while, it didn't seem as if he
would survive. Thanks to the Humane Society of
Greenwood’s efforts, the bi-eyed handsome pup was
cared for, given vaccines and de-wormed. After weeks of
waiting, a transport delivered him to Popcorn Park.
His legs have seemed to improve and arrangements are
being made for an evaluation of Kermit when he is seen
at the pediatric section of the University of Pennsylvania
Veterinary School. Kermit gets around great and he just
loves life! He loves everyone he meets and is having
lots of fun getting tons of attention, walks, playtime and
extra TLC by our staff, who have fallen head over heels
in love with this sweetheart. The bi-eyed boy gets along
well with other dogs and cats, but would prefer a home
with no children under the age of 12. This little sweetheart is so deserving of a fresh start in life .... please
make his dreams come true! File L-21882-NM (Forked River)

24 CHIHUAHUAS RESCUED FROM NORTH
CAROLINA & FLOWN TO POPCORN PARK
Mugs and Bosco seem to have become an inseparable pair.
Above: A patient pooch was
the last dog waiting to be
unloaded from Society vans.
Society staffers Sandy Hickman (l.) and Stephanie Sitts waiting on line to have
the Medical Dept. check out each Chihuahua as it arrived.
Over 30 Chihuahuas were left without a permanent home when their North
Carolina owner died. The owner’s sister, a NJ resident, found a home for
some of the dogs but there were many more that needed immediate rescue.
The Society was contacted by Chihuahua Rescue & Transport, Inc. of Gates,
NC who were overseeing
and caring for the dogs.
Arrangements were made
for the Society to take the
remaining 24 Chihuahuas
to the Forked River facility.
Through the efforts of
Pilots Matt Kiener and
Byron Hamby who volunteer for Pilots ‘N Paws,
they flew 253 miles from
Suffolk, VA where the
dogs were scheduled to
be euthanized into Robert
J. Miller Air Park in
Berkeley Twp.
Matt Kiener (l.) and Byron Hamby had “Who Let The Dogs Out”
playing as they arrived at the airport.
Quincy (l.) and Gizmo were examined & it revealed that Gizmo
has only 2 teeth.
Above, this group of
Chihuahuas are comfortable
in a “dormitory” setting.The
kennels have radiant heat &
there are blankets & sweaters
if necessary.
Three Popcorn Park vans were there to receive the animals. All of them were
brought to the Popcorn Park Medical Dept. where each one was medically
checked, given all necessary inoculations, etc. Staffers were then ready to
handle them, brush them & get acquainted with the newest additions.
According to newspaper reports, on getting ready for landing, the pilot
pushed a button & the music of “Who Let the Dogs Out?” filled the plane’s
cabin.
Although newspaper reports
indicate the individual may
have been a “hoarder”, the
Chihuahuas were well fed,
well cared for, and many
were altered. These sweet little lap lovers range in age
from 2 years and up.
No Society orphans were
euthanized to make room for
the new arrivals. For those
concerned about these little
dogs in our kennels, not only
is there radiant heat in the
floors and heaters up above,
but the dogs have blankets
in their kennels and sweaters
if needed.

signed into law. A law that makes it more difficult for people charged
with animal cruelty to regain custody of their animals & tighten rules
requiring them to pay full costs & vet bills. The California Federation of

DEPT. OF VETERANS AFFAIRS ENDS
SERVICE DOG SUPPORT – CREATES A
BARRIER TO SERVICE DOG ADOPTIONS
In June 2011, Congress mandated additional scientific study be conducted by the U. S Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) on the impact of service dogs paired with PTSD vets. It was to follow 23 PTSD vets & their
service dogs, tracking them through 2014. The VA has announced it
has suspended the study & indicated it no longer will support service
dogs paired with veterans diagnosed with PTSD & will only support
dogs partnered with veterans with visible disabilities.
Paws for Purple Hearts is one of several groups that provide certified
therapy dogs for PTSD patients. The VA cited concerns about dogs
biting children, dirty, cramped living conditions that caused animals to
suffer illnesses such as worms & diarrhea & faulty record keeping.
Sadly, they have created another barrier to pet ownership with this
ruling.
PENSYLVANIA
Gov. Corbett has signed a law aimed at protecting service dogs from
attacks by other dogs. The law imposes criminal penalties & a fine of up
to $5,000 on the owner or co-owner of a dog that kills, maims or disfigures a service dog without provocation. Service dogs are more vulnerable because they are trained not to fight back & can cost tens of
thousands of dollars to replace because of their extensive training. The
bill required criminal liability in cases where a service dog is attacked &
injured to pay for veterinary care & if necessary, retraining. If the service dog is killed, they would be required to cover the cost of replacement. A national study found that a third of service dogs that are
attacked are forced to retire as a result of physical injuries
or emotional trauma.

old autistic daughter Emily and her service dog, Levi, to leave the store
for the second time in 3 months. The store gave the youngster an apology & a $25 gift card, but when they returned to use the gift card, the
dog was not allowed into the store. Levi gives Emily a sense of stability.
Without Levi, Emily could get lost or leave the store with a stranger. A
complaint was filed with police & the Alberta Human Rights
Commission. Ms. Ainsworth said the store has the unique opportunity to
educate their store associates but the public as well.
The HUMANE NEWS has been publishing this paper for the last 43 years. Sadly, we
have found that we cannot change the world overnight ... but we continue to try and
make a difference. It is our hope that the information printed herein will have a ripple
effect on you, your family, your friends, your co-workers. If we can help one person to get
involved, to rescue one animal from a cruel situation, to adopt a lonely cat or pup from
your local shelter, to consider a vegetarian lifestyle, then the HUMANE NEWS is achieving
its intent. If this is the first issue that you have received and you would like to be placed
on our mailing list, all that is required is a donation - the amount we leave up to you.

The miserable effects of mange took several weeks to improve. She has
been at the Society for over 3 months getting the necessary medical care.
Now “Hope” is hoping for a home for the holidays.
She had the look of a
wizened old lady -- her skin
condition was left untreated
and the mange had encompassed her whole body complete with secondary infections, bloody splotches, boils
and erupted abscesses.
Found as a stray in Neptune
she was rescued by Society
Animal Control Officer Kevin
Rooney. He immediately
contacted the Tinton Falls
shelter to alert them to one
of the worst cases he had
seen. The same day, the pup
was brought to our Newark
facility for examination,
treatment and to make her comfortable during her stay. Kudos to our veterinary staff for the efforts & dedication they put forth for the cases that
arrive daily & require their continued care. She came to the Society in
August & it has been almost three months of care. Now "Hope" was
returned to our Tinton Falls shelter where she is now available for adoption.
It is only through the generosity of our members to the Res-Q Fund that we
are able to sustain the efforts of long-term care or specialized veterinary
services for the needy that come through our doors. File TF-70775-F.
NEW JERSEY LEGISLATION
Gov. Chris Christie has signed into law
A.2023 (Dancer) and S.1976 (Lesniak)
which makes it illegal to slaughter horses
for human consumption, prohibits the sale
of horse meat & bans the transport of horse
meat or live horses for the purpose of slaughter.
Assembly Bill 3250 would prohibit the cruel confinement of female
breeding pigs. Senate Bill 1921 has already passed the Senate 35-1.
A-3250 is in the Assembly’s Natural Resources & Agriculture
Committee. Please contact your State Assemblymember asking that

Declan (l.) gave a piggy bank to
his brother, 8 yr. old Liam -who had charitable ideas for his
piggy bank. The brothers are
now selling piggy banks. (See
story).
On January 1st, our 8-year-old
son Liam, suggested we turn his
new piggy bank (a gift from his
brother Declan) into a vehicle to
help others in need. He then said: “This little piggy will go to charity!” It was
at that moment that this movement was born. As early as January 4th, Liam
decided on his first charity – the Foley Fund.
Liam and his brother Declan have vowed to donate their allowance money &
time to those in need. They will also be selling little piggy banks in hopes that
those who buy them will in turn fill them for a charity close to their heart.
Please feel free to contact them via: [email protected]
Liam and Declan recently sent us the following note and a check:
“We are pleased to offer the gift of $34.11 to AHS/Popcorn Park on behalf of
Kim Campbell of Hoboken, NJ through thislittlepiggywent2charity.com Kim’s
piggy bank was full & she chose you as the recipient.”

policy” which gives students the option to use advanced software and
other humane methods of studying anatomy. PETA is also offering to
donate computers & software through their national educational grants
program so that D.C. students have access to state-of-the-art virtual dissection equipment. If your teacher would like to learn how to cut out
dissection, contact peta.org and request a free “Cut Out Dissection”
pack. Many of the animals used in dissection could have been lost or
abandoned companion animals. Frogs are often ripped from their natural environment & thrown into bags without food or water & shipped
across the country; many sustain injuries or die during transport. Sadly,
this is a huge billion dollar industry but behind the scenes, it is cruel.

Be A Pet Protector!
As an animal lover of any age, you have the opportunity
of protecting the animals you love. Please pass the
following information out to family, friends
and neighbors and help save lives!
COLD WEATHER WARNINGS
With winter now underway, it is time to remind pet owners of cold
weather concerns for your pets.
* More fires occur at this time of year than any other. Purchase a
“Pets Inside” decal. See Page 21 for Pet Alert decals.
* Cats will seek warmth cuddled up inside the engine compartment.
Before you start up your car, knock on the hook or honk the horn.
* Chemicals & salts that are used to de-ice your sidewalk, driveway
etc. can be poisonous or an irritant to pet’s paws.
* Dog houses used by many for their “outside” dogs must be well
insulated & just big enough for the dog to sit & lie down or turn
around. A dog house that is too big will not contain the dog’s body
heat to stay warm. Straw is the best bedding for warmth, and should
be replaced when wet.
* For safety sake, do not use metal bowls or buckets as the cold
metal can cause injury to tongues. Switch to plastic or ceramic bowls
when it is below freezing.
* Whether you are feeding birds, dogs, cats or wildlife, they all need
water and extra food as keeping warm requires a lot of energy.
* Antifreeze that leaks or spills can kill dogs, cats & even youngsters
who have been known to swallow the sweet tasting antifreeze.

Thumper is a Dwarf rabbit who was

It’s the holiday season when many of our residents are forgotten. Rabbits are among them. These rabbits were once someone’s Easter pets and now they reside with us. If your family is
looking to adopt a rabbit, we have several at each of our shelters. Rabbits are not low maintenance … and it is usually the
parents who take care of them, clean & feed them, appropriate toys, housing, exercise, etc. If you would like to help our
rabbits, they are always in need of timothy hay, carrot tops,
collard greens, turnip greens, rabbit pellets, etc.

This past weekend ..... a giant flea market on Saturday and on Sunday a Fun Fest
complete with carnival games, vendors, a fantastic magic show by Jack of All
Spades, a very entertaining and educational reptile program put on by Pete

AROUND THE WORLD
INDIA
The Election Commission of India issued an order
banning the use of animals by political parties
during campaigns. It is alleged that animals are
often made to carry loads beyond permissible limits,
made to work long hours, & some candidates even paint slogans & election symbols on them using harmful chemicals. Bulls, donkeys, elephants,
camels & other animals that are used in election campaigns are commonly
beaten, pushed into crowds, overloaded & otherwise abused.
INDIA
According to www.traffic.org, at least 4 leopards a week enter the illegal
wildlife trade in India. They are poached & their body parts entered into
illegal wildlife trade every week for at least the past 10 years. They also
estimate the additional levels of undetected trade, and conclude that over
2,200 leopards were trafficked in India during the period – an average of
four animals per week. Traffic’s objective analysis has cast a new light onto
the sheer scale of the illicit trade. A statistical report and the recommendation of establishment of a task force are on their website.
NEWS FROM NEW JERSEY
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP
Dawn Scheld, who operated SOS Canine Rescue &
Rehabilitation, was convicted of 6 counts of animal
cruelty involving 61 dogs living in horrific,
flea-infested, feces & urine filled cages. The bodies of
6 dogs were exhumed on the site including one with evidence of a
bludgeon wound that ripped open his stomach. Scheld ostensibly went to
North Carolina to save animals from high-kill shelters. The animals lived in
horrendous conditions; water bowls contained feces & evidence of diarrhea
& nothing was done. There were 37 surviving dogs but they will not be
able to find lifelong homes because Scheld’s attorney objected to a request
that the animals be freed for placement. There is an outstanding bill for
$180,000 for the care of the 37 remaining dogs. Scheld & her live-in
companion, Leroy Thomas Jr. will be sentenced on Nov. 9 in Cape May
County Superior Court.
MAURICE RIVER TOWNSHIP
Over 100 diamondback terrapins and half as many turtle eggs were moved
to safety before the start of a federal road project. Volunteers from the
Wetlands Institute used rakes to comb the sand in search of turtle nests.
About 100 hatchlings & 50 eggs were found.
EAST BRUNSWICK
Police responded to a complaint concerning conditions of the dogs kept by
homeowner Ellen Shih. The homeowner advised she had 63 Shih Tzus
living in her home that she bred and sold. Animal control officers removed
the dogs to the local shelter where they were found to be infested with
fleas, had dermatitis, conjunctivitis & other health conditions. Shih was
given summonses for 63 counts of animal cruelty, 63 counts of failure to
provide vet care, 58 counts of unlicensed dogs & 58 counts of no rabies
inoculations.
NEW ZEALAND
David & Daryl Balfour, a former Kennel Club dog show judge & his wife
were banned from owning or caring for animals for 20 years. The SPCA
found 87 dogs & 161 cats in cramped conditions with insufficient shelter,
water, lighting, ventilation, etc. The animals were kept as part of a breeding operation. Half of the animals were euthanized due to poor treatment
& about 50 cats were treated. Some cats took up to 3 years to fully
recover. Although this occurred in 2007, in June 2012, the couple were
sentenced to fines of $12,500 each as well as disqualifying them from
owning or caring for animals for 20 years.
PHILIPPINES
Regional Maritime Police rescued 27 Philippine Forest Turtles which were
stuffed in a box & abandoned on a pier just 2 months after another smuggler was jailed for trafficking in this critically endangered species The bag
contained freshwater turtles packed in pockets and crocodiles in wire mesh
cages. The bag was meant to be loaded onto a vessel bound for Manila. A
few months ago, authorities intercepted 43 Philippine Forest turtles from
the bag of a Chinese national. It was the second time he had been caught
– the first time he tried to smuggle in 20 of the turtles.

VERONA
When a sharp-eyed citizen took a photo of a substance that looked like
antifreeze, it appeared in the local papers and caught the attention of the
Verona Police Dept. Also found was an unidentified treat laced with animal
feces. It was reported that a dog that licked the liquid became ill. Salvatore
Ferruggia was sick of dogs relieving themselves on his front lawn, located
near Verona Park. He pleaded guilty to two civil charges of unnecessary
animal cruelty. Verona Municipal Court Judge John Paparzzi fined
Ferruggia $500 for each of the offenses. He was also ordered to reimburse
the dog owners $263 for vet care costs that were incurred.

Our beautiful girl, Penny PigMeadows, crossed over peacefully at home in
our arms & only moments before her Vet arrived. Music playing in the other
room was part of her normal breakfast routine. Penny left us as a lone
bagpiper played Amazing Grace. She would have turned Sweet 16 on October
3rd & we simply can’t imagine life without her.
In her early years, Penny was the first documented Flying Pig when she flew
her hovercraft for Nickelodeon on national TV. She was the baby of our herd
of 3 but in time moved up to Herd Leader. In her later years, she became
Executive Director at the home office of Animal Wellness Consultants. Most
of all, she has been our truly-loved & constant companion & our hearts ache
at our physical loss of her.
Penny is survived by her people: Colleen, Wayne, Sarah, Nick & Alison of
Clay, NY; her sister Iris of West Monroe & her many friends, fans & family
members.
We believe that life goes on and that we will see her again one day. And as
deep as our grief is, our gratitude is far greater for having been blessed to
have loved & been loved by Penny PigMeadows.

A NEW BITTERING AGENT BILL
Here in NJ, Senators Jeff Van Drew & Fred Madden have introduced Senate
Bill 2270. The bill would establish a civil penalty to any person who fails
to include a bittering agent in antifreeze sold in NJ. Although the law
requires the use of a bittering agent for antifreeze sold in NJ, it would fill
the gap by providing that any person who fails to include a bittering agent
would be subject to a civil penalty of $500 for first offense & $1,000 for
second offense. It has been referred to the Senate’s Energy & Environment
Committee.

our readership. And because of the sagas they have each experienced, we wanted to present them to you.
As we begin a brand New Year, we are hoping that some of our long-time residents may find a new home
and a new life. The concept that many of our residents (whether on the Share-A-Pet Program or residents
in our Animal Care Centers) will never know the joy of being loved and giving love is a sad
consideration. Featured below are some of our Share-A-Pets that have grown old before our eyes. Some of
them have developed health issues and we want you to be aware that
we closely monitor these dogs and cats. The Society has vets on staff daily.
If you would like to “adopt” one of these orphans, the cost is $10 a month. As a member, you will receive
a color photo & report of your pet every four months. The membership card entitles you to FREE
ADMISSION to Popcorn Park Refuge. You are invited to visit your pet, bring him treats and toys and even
adopt him.The Share-A-Pet Program has no contracts & you may cancel at any time. All funds gathered
under this program are applied directly to the care of these animals. Any funds exceeding the need for a
particular animal is applied to the care & welfare of other shelter animals. You can also view and sponsor
all Share-A-Pets on our website at www.ahscares.org and click on Share-A-Pet Program.
Tiny of New Gretna
Cid of Newark
Cid was found as a grimy, emaciated and forlorn lady in
Newark, a deaf stray. After her physical condition
improved, she was sent to the Society’s Forked River
facility. She has been at the Society since October 2009.
Several weeks ago, a large mass developed under the
skin next to her ear.The mass was removed and biopsied. It was diagnosed as a mast cell tumor grade II. It is
not likely, but it could spread elsewhere over time. Cid
will be closely monitored for any new masses and these
will be addressed if they occur. She would be comforted
by your love and happily welcomes new sponsors.
Biscuit of the World Trade Center
Tiny was about 9 years old when she arrived
at Popcorn Park. Her owner had developed
a terminal illness and brought Tiny to us
when she could no longer physically care for
her. She is a loving cat who gets along with
cat and dogs. She is content to be held in
your arms. Since Tiny is allergic to certain
foods, she may usually be found in one of the
administrator’s offices for her meals.When
visitors come through, she knows they are
not strangers – only friends she hasn’t met.
She would love to find someone’s lap where
she can spend the rest of her life.

Sept. 11, 2001 was a fateful day for this country …. and for Biscuit
who was seen in the rubble searching for an owner who had disappeared. Although firemen repeatedly ushered the dog away from
the scene, he insisted on returning. A construction worker took the
dog home, hoping to provide him some comfort but soon realized
he was unable to keep the dog. When he contacted the Society, we
offered this loyal dog the Animal Haven Farm immediately. Biscuit
had a stroke a few months ago. He miraculously recovered,
although he remains a bit unsteady. We will be keeping a close watch
on him & making sure that he continues to be comfortable.
Mazie of Waretown
Featured in the Aug.2012
edition of the HUMANE
NEWS was an adorable Shih
Tzu type who had many medical issues. Most of them have
been addressed.Tests reveal
that this little angel also has
Cushings disease & mammary
cancer.The cancer is in the
early stages & could be up to
3 years before it progresses.
There are many animal lovers
who may want to cram a whole lifetime of love and happiness into the next few
years. Mazie is on our Share-A-Pet Program for those who would love to visit
her, support her…. or even take her into your heart and home.
