There were 49 movies officially produced in the Philippines for 2006.
The figure can be supplemented by non-mainstream titles like the
digital pictures that had a full run in regular theaters within the
year as well as those specifically made for the Cinemalaya, Cinema
One and Cinemanila Digital Lokal competitions.
Regal Entertainment was the top production outfit for the
year with a total of 12 releases including co-ventures with at least
two other major film companies.
Romance was the top genre with nine titles jointly supplied
by Regal and the rest of the big studios, namely Star Cinema, GMA
Films, and Viva Entertainment.
Although romance was the top genre and Regal the top film
company, it was ironically Chito Roño’s Sukob – a horror flick
from Star Cinema – that proved to be the biggest moneymaker.
The year saw at least one Cinemalaya entry, namely, Adolf
Alix’s Donsol cross over to the mainstream with a full theatrical
run of its version blown up to the industry’s 35mm print standard.
The year was also marked with the holding of the annual Metro
Manila Film Festival with its complete selection given one common
playdate, a departure from the experience of past years wherein some
had to wait for the new year to open in theaters nationwide.
International recognition for Philippine cinema may also
be said to characterize the film year. Most pronounced was the case
of Jeffrey Jeturian’s Kubrador. Its critics prize in Moscow was just
the first in a string of honors it received from prestigious festivals
worldwide.
In this filmography, each entry contains: 1) the title of the
film; 2) genre, running time (in hours and minutes), MTRCB
classification; 3) short synopsis; and 4) production data.
