There’s a lot to be said about being in the SCUBA industry. Most people, including divers, wonder when we’re going to get a real job. Although some individuals in the industry get upset with that, I love it. I may be working hard on the show or teaching a SCUBA course, I love it. As an instructor I get to change people’s lives, some forever. As a show producer I have the pleasure of working with many partners to bring you a show that is unmatched, nor equaled. The SCUBA industry is fascinating, with so much diversity; one could never lose interest or get burnt out. With that said, there is nothing better than you: our customer. Because of your enthusiasm for the industry we all take part to present to you this wonderful EXPO, educational seminars and two film festivals. We fly speakers in from all over the world and screen them to be sure they are presenting quality films. SO, thinking about your job, and looking at the SCUBA industry, you can’t help but wonder what I have done wrong! A SCUBA professional could be working a warm beach, managing a great resort or working at a local store. But what is really exciting is that the job is not the same, we all wear many hats. Diving is an exciting industry and I sure hope that bleeds out into the aisles at the show and the film festivals Please thank all our wonderful volunteers for their support and hard work all weekend to give you a very professional show. Happy diving! Sincerely, Patrick Hammer Patrick Hammer WOW Vice President www.facebook.com /ourworldunderwater G G G G G G G G G G G G G G G G G G CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS! THE 11TH ANNUAL OUR WORLD-UNDERWATER INTERNATIONAL UNDERWATER PHOTO & VIDEO COMPETITION Hosted by DIVE PHOTO GUIDE.COM AND WETPIXEL The winning images will be on exhibit all weekend on the expo floor! The official announcements of winners will take place during the Friday & Saturday night film festivals. § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § § 4 46th Our World-Underwater Midwest Dive & Travel Expo www.ourworldunderwater.com OW-U MIDDLE COAST AWARD Our World-Underwater is proud to present the 2016 Middle Coast Award to: Dennis Hale the lone suvivor of one of the Great Lakes' most deadly shipwrecks, died after a bout with cancer. He was 75. When Hale would travel the Great Lakes region telling his tale of survival after the sinking of the Daniel J. Morrell in 1966, he often would say this about his ordeal: "I think somehow I give people a little hope in life, that life is a struggle, but if you have faith and determination you can go through life and come out ahead. His wife, Barb Hale, was with her husband when he died. "He meant everything in the world to me and was an inspiration to many," she said. In 1966, Hale was 26 when he boarded the Morrell for its last trip of the season, serving as a watchman inside the pilothouse. The freighter was heading north on a three-day trip for Taconic, Minn., to pick up a load of iron ore. Out deep in Lake Huron and off the coast of Port Hope, Mich., the freighter encountered 35-foot waves and winds close to 60 mph. The ship couldn't withstand the barrage, and broke in two. As it sank, Hale and three of his crewmates climbed into a small life raft hoping to be rescued but it would end up being a cold, windy 38-hour ordeal. Over those long hours, Hale had said, he and his shipmates did what they could to stay warm. In an interview for a Free Press documentary last year, Hale recounted a harrowing tale of survival. "I'm a fighter but the uncertainty of not knowing if anybody knows you're missing and to hear your other friends cry out in pain like that is just…it makes life seem so useless, really. So I prayed." Hale was featured prominently in the documentary, "Graveyard of the Great Lakes: A Shipwreck Hunter's Quest to Discover the Past," which debuted at the Freep Film Festival and is the first full length feature film ever featured for the Our World-Underwater Friday Evening Film Festival. Hale attended and spoke on a panel after the screening. As he told it, Hale hoped and waited for a rescue with his shipmates, but they froze to death beside him before a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter spotted their raft. Hale spent several days in recovery in a hospital in Harbor Beach but spent countless more years trying to come to grips with the reality of being the lone survivor of 29 crewmembers. He enjoyed travelling and telling his story, which he viewed as a kind of therapy. He would later say: "It gave my life more of a sense of purpose." David Trotter, a shipwreck hunter from Canton who also was featured in the documentary, considered Hale a friend. They appeared together on the film festival panel. "He was one of the most unique people in the history of the Great Lakes with his survival," Trotter said. In 1979, Trotter would discover the lost shipwreck. "Dennis was a very unique man and I admired his ability to tell others his story. He certainly was a survivor and fought with all his energy to beat the cancer. He now belongs to Great Lakes history." Hale went on to write a popular book in 2010 about his survival and rescue titled "Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Sole Survivor." He is survived by his wife, Barbara, children, Cindi Titch, Katherine Scaife, stepchildren Jon C. Robinson and Melissa LaMar; and seven grandchildren. There was never a question the explosion that ripped into her during World War I caused her sinking. The hurried wartime investigation accepted hasty assumptions, and with the ship resting at 400 feet beneath Greek waters, the real question as to why the ship sank in less than one hour was never answered. It is through technological advances in underwater exploration and more than sixty years of searching that the sequence of events has finally been discovered. In Mystery of the Last Olympian, Richie Kohler, well-known from Shadow Divers and from the TV series Deep Sea Detectives takes readers on the intriguing journey from the rise of the magnificent Olympian to the fateful day in 1916. He then moves forward in time through multiple expeditions beginning with the great Jacques Cousteau who located the ocean liner in 1975. Each successive team that risked their lives uncovered new clues, but in 2009, Richie and his dive partner finally pinpointed the secret eluding everyone. As they achieved their goal, unknown to them the Britannic was claiming a final victim. The expedition leader— an expert explorer and personal friend—was dying at a shallower depth from an accident that stunned everyone. In picking up the pieces of that terrible day, Richie and a new team have finally documented their findings and the false narrative that was recorded can at last be corrected. Some knew him as the co-founder of PADI, some as Coach at Loyola University, and others simply as a friend. His passion for the water was undeniable. He loved diving and was an educator at heart. Ralph enjoyed interacting with people and spent his life passing his enthusiasm of teaching on to others. He felt strongly that anyone with the same drive and passion should be given the opportunity to continue their training to become a Scuba Instructor. It is that philosophy that we work hard to uphold through the Foundation’s programs. REEF, a Not-for-Profit organization. Your support of the Ralph Erickson Educational Foundation helps make the scuba industry more diverse by helping us provide Instructor training for people working in diving that would never have the chance to reach their goals. The cost to obtain an Instructor rating can easily reach over $3,000, but with the support of the Foundation, that dwindles to little or NO expense. Keeping Ralph’s dream alive by providing Instructor training to those in need is now our passion. Help us change lives - Visit the booth and talk to Karen and Karina, (Ralph’s wife and daughter). This fine organization, an Illinois Not-forProfit raises money to support Aquatic Education and projects. Over the years the foundation has raised money to sink U N D AT I ships, conduct cleanup dives, present SCUBA to thousands of children, and support a children’s cancer camp in Wisconsin, where those that can learn to dive, do. Some have even made it to the Advanced Open Water level. In the past few years the foundation has worked with and supported a few SCUBA programs for our VETS. This worthwhile program is very costly and we sure can use your help in supporting the VETS that have served. We believe when a spouse is away from home the one left behind also gives up a lot, so our goal is to extend the program for both. Every donation is tax deductible and truly appreciated by the foundation and our Vets. DONATE: at the Our World-Underwater counter, or visit www.timearlyfoundation.org In the Auction booth you can bid on an interesting trip to Ezulwini, South Africa. We are promoting a 5 night trip with an opening bid of $3,700. We have a 7 night trip with an opening bid of $4,800 and a 10 night trip for a starting bid of $5,500. The donations we raise from the trips support the foundation. Thank you for your support. E IN MEMORIAM: LOSS OF NANCY BOUCHA Nancy was a dear friend of the show; and of my wife and I. I can’t help but think back to the early 70’s when I worked with a wonderful instructor who started SCUBA SYSTEMS. Later when Tom sold the store and moved on, a few years went by then Larry and Nancy Boucha came in. They ran a very professional store and really cared about the industry. A few years ago, my heart was broken when Larry called to inform me that both he and Nancy were dealing with medical issues that effected their ability to continue in the industry. I had no idea of the difficulty and pain my friends were going through. Then recently my heart sank even further when I received the call Nancy passed away. Larry is in need of selling of all her dive equipment as well as most of his. Larry also has more historic equipment than anyone I know, and he will be selling that here at the show. Please support him and see what you can purchase. Nancy, my friend, Rest in Peace, you fought a tough battle and we all miss you. Few divers and instructors have dedicated themselves to the diving community as Lou has. Lou was certified in 1960 at Lake Geneva. Forget the wetsuit; his check out suit consisted of long johns, two pair of jeans, three wool sweaters and the ever-popular double hose regulator. He served in the Army, an E-4, from 6365. Lou was located in England and one of his duties was that of a swimming instructor at American Independent Schools. He said it kept him out of KP duty. He lead a team of divers in a competitive British Sub Aqua Club, where he and his first single hose regulator reached depths of 80 Following his military service, Lou worked his way into the position of a WGN Facilities manager: he personally knew Bozo. He had a second life as a dedicated husband and father. His third life was diving. • He’s certified over 500 divers • 1960 - Co-Founder of the Elmhurst H2Ogres SCUBA Club where he was an instructor; established the Ice Diving Instruction program with Bill Harman. • 1978: National YMCA sent Lou to Miami to take the course for certifying handicapped divers • Taught two blind individuals to dive, Lake Point Tower and Hines VA • Legendary Joe Strykowski appoints Lou as SCUBA Field Coordinator for YMCA’s Midwest region • Pioneered Certification of wheelchair bound divers • 1979- Certified an X-coastguard officer who lost two legs and one hand • Hines VA hospital – Instructor for two years, furnishing all tanks, air and equipment. • Instructed a high cervical quadriplegic, who also was a surgeon. It took him nine weeks to gain the confidence to move down the ramp, put on the gear and clear his mask. • Board of Director member of the Aquatic Education Group which has sent close to 2000 Chicago Public School low income children and their teachers to the Shedd Aquarum; an annual event. • Began volunteering at Our World-Underwater in 1965 as a lifeguard for the show, assisted with booths and exhibits; still volunteers today. • Instructed at these YMCAs: Elmhurst, Hastings, Leaning Tower, Lakeview, and Lawson Northbrook. • Inspected ocean-going vessels before leaving the harbor overseas. • Developed Blind Bailouts as part of the YMCA program • 12 year volunteer with the Shedd Aquarium where he not only has participated in a wide range of duties, but also has been instrumental in developing a wide array of inventions that has aided the Shedd. Following are but a few: SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) for 10 years Has help design and built five versions of coral kreisels that are used in the field to raise larval corals. Responsible for building and assembling detailed u/w tasks for MATE ROV competition. “His ingenuity, fabrication and execution of specialized equipment always amazes the Shedd staff.” “He’s the raw materials/blueprint/schematic guy every aquarium must have to make things go smoothly.” Need a recompression chamber for sea life; just ask Lou. One staff member wrote, “Working with Lou is mind expanding and quite gratifying.” There is a sign hanging up in one of the Shedd’s reserve areas that reads, “No one builds them like mother nature.” A staff member in another area wrote, “Have you met Lou Nesslar yet?” He has been an outstanding contributor to our sport diving community.
