International Children’s Festival Main Organizer topics. One of the main goals of TASM is to establish bridges between Turkish and American Cultures by fostering and promoting intercultural dialog, community involvement, contribution, and volunteering. To serve this goal, TASM volunteers frequently visit retirement homes and homeless shelters, make donations to food banks, and distribute food to people in need. Turkish Cuisine is among the most delicious and well known in the world. TASM Women’s Branch organizes Turkish Cooking Classes, Turkish Coffee Nights, Bazaar and Bake Sales, Noah’s Pudding (Ashura) sharing with neighbors and different communities; all of which are highly appreciated by Michiganders. MMSA is a college-prep academy offering a broad range of challenging courses with a stronger emphasis in Math, Science, and Technology. MMSA offers grades K-12 with a maximum class of 25 (20 in Kindergarten). With small class sizes, the students have more opportunities to participate and teachers can focus on each child as an individual. They all meet every Friday at the Balkan American Community Center from 6pm to 9pm. During this time they attend Albanian language class as well as the folkloric and character building class. Instructor: Betira Shahollari 7 Display Table Representative: Ziya Baghmanli 8 Performance Title: Baje re baje dhol ar dhak-Pohela boishakh Baje re baje dhol ar dhak- is a Bengali song. The song signifies the onset of Bengali new year, pohela boishakh being the first day of the Bengali calendar. Pohela Boishakh is celebrated with grandeur and colors and is accompanied by the beats of dhak and dhol, meaning the drums. The dance is presented by Path Bhaban students. Bengali is the seventh largest language in the world spoken by over 200 million people. Path Bhaban, a Bengali Learning Center, is dedicated to helping the next generation of children in Michigan to learn and preserve the Bengali language and culture for over thirty years. BACC is well respected today as an organization which promotes rich Bosnian cultural heritage, language and tradition. “Behar” is a proud Bosnian ambassador and a bridge between friendly nations and countries represented in this part of the world. Folk dances, colorful costumes, songs called Sevdalinka recognized as Bosnian blues songs and its specific tunes done by young “Behar” members, will take you for a short period of time to the heart shaped country that Bosnians love so much. In recent years, they have appeared at the Statue of Liberty New York, Mount Rushmore South Dakota, Boston's Faneuil Hall Massachusetts, and Centennial Olympic Park Georgia. The Bavarian dancers annually perform the Maypole at Frankenmuth's Bavarian Festival. The suite "Dances from Rabakoz" has elements of a men's dance, a girl's dance and also a children's section. Rabakoz is located in the northwestern part of Hungary and therefore shows elements of German and Csek influence in the music and styling. Both Kis Szivek and Kis Harang are very involved in preserving the Hungarian culture through it's language, music and dance. We perform for our respective culture center's events and represent Hungary at international festivals. The Italian culture abounds in a rich heritage, and IACS is all about preserving and sharing traditions, values, and culture. 20 Performance Title: Algorithm and Japanese Soul Miyukids Dream Singers will perform two songs: Algorithm March is introduced in the TV show "Pitagora Switch" a popular children's show broadcast by NHK in Japan since 2002. It has been receiving worldwide attention for their interesting musical way of introducing Pythagoras' theorem and theory. The song with physical movement help children to have more "Aha" moment while understanding Pythagoras' theory. Soran-bushi is a traditional dance/song sung by the fishermen all over Japan. This Nanchu version was arranged by a middle school in Hokkaido (northern island). Soran is called to encourage the fishermen during their work; dragging nets, pulling ropes, and lifting heavy luggage over their shoulders. Dream Singers has started in 2007 by Miyuki Mori, who is a professional singer for thirty years. The Dream Singers learn Japanese songs, culture and manners. Their philosophy is not only for children to improve their singing and dancing ability, but also to increase their motivation for their whole lives through lessons and performances. Tanec is Detroit, Michigan’s only Macedonian folklore group, keeping the rich Macedonian folklore traditions alive through dance and music. Founded in 1978, and associated with Saint Mary Macedonian Orthodox Cathedral of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Tanec consists of children ranging from 5 to 15 years of age. Tanec children are proud of their Macedonian heritage, descending from cities such as Tetovo, Skopje, 26 Bitola, and Ohrid. Tanec children attend weekly practices, which include one hour of dancing, one hour of Macedonian language study, and a half hour of Orthodox religious study. The dances performed by Tanec represent every day stories of Macedonian folkloric traditions and legend. Through these dances, Tanec performers keep Macedonian history and rich Macedonian heritage alive. Weekly classes, pre-schools, and camps in Spanish, French, Mandarin and Arabic are offered. Additionally, mobile language programs for schools and free classes for the community are provided. Unique to the Detroit metro area, Bright Loritos is the only facility offering a true immersive approach to language instruction in several languages both on and off-site. Halka Dancers promote Polish culture through the songs and dances of Poland. Classes are held in Detroit and students range in age from 3-18 years old. Of the children’s programs provided by MRCC, the weekend school offers the largest variety of classes and activities. Among them: Russian language and reading, mathematics, art and crafts, basic science, slavic history, music, choir, dance, and drama, all taught in Russian. Furthermore MRCC hosts annual traditional Russian festivals like the Fall Celebration, New Years, Maslenitsa, and Mothers Day. These programs aim to preserve and expand Russian language and tradition among Russian speaking children and parents and all others interested in Russian culture. This year MRCC presents the dance: "Russian Matryoshka." The matryoshka has become an iconic symbol of Russia and the inspiration for this dance. Another presentation is a song named "Ivan Kupala" showcasing Russian folk traditions. The group is comprised of schoolage children and this children’s dance group has participated in performances and festivals in the Metropolitan Detroit area, in Canada and in Slovakia. Their goal and desire is to continue to promote Slovak folklore and to delight their audiences. Instructors: Tassia Zaryckyj, Nazar Dumanskiyy, Denys Slyusar, John Zaryckyj 41 Performance Title: A Slice of Americana The Utica Academy for International Studies (UAIS) Choir is a group of high-school-aged students who elect to take vocal music as part of their rigorous International Baccalaureate program requirements. The UAIS choir will perform two choral pieces that are distinctly American. "This Little Light of Mine", arranged by Earlene Rentz, harkens back to the rich heritage of African-American spirituals, and has become a widely-recognized folk piece, often performed by choruses. The text of "Bee, I'm Expecting You" was written by Emily Dickinson, born in Massachusetts. Dickinson, though a private and isolated personality in her lifetime, showed a bit of humor in this short poem, which describes a fly's impatience as it awaits a bee's company. The setting of Dickinson's poem, arranged by Emma Lou Diemer, lends musical tension which brings to life the fly's impatience.
