Challenging market conditions persist, but our performance reflects strong demand for Nissan's products, as well as our relentless focus on operational efficiency. Despite uncertainty surrounding the ongoing global economic recovery, raw material costs and exchange rate volatility, we are confident to achieve our FY2010 forecast. Atsuo Kosaka MANAGING DIRECTOR NISSAN MIDDLE EAST FZE We meet again this edition to speak about our major news for the past few months. We have been busy recently launching the Nissan 370Z to all our sports enthusiasts in the region. The seductively styled Z® Roadster offers everything the hardtop Z® Coupe does – and more. It delivers an exhilarating connection to the air, wind and environment on top of the new Z® Coupe’s exceptional levels of performance. But perhaps unexpected for a car this sporty is its greatly enhanced refinement and quality – as seen in features such as its onetouch, auto-locking convertible top and beautifully crafted interior. We also had a visit from our President & CEO, Mr. Carlos Ghosn, who was visiting the United Arab Emirates for the second time this year. He spoke at the Majlis of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forced, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, about the topic of Sustainability and Diversity. Following the visit we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kingdom of Jordan to promote zero-emission mobility, heralding the first partnership of its kind in the Arab region. Then as now it was a ground-breaking and innovative new type of vehicle. In fact, Nissan’s engineers created a whole new market segment with their reinterpretation of what an urban crossover should look like. 8 9 COVER STORY T www.eshiftmagazine.com www.eshiftmagazine.com he timing for the first generation Murano a definite evolution of the first generation. Take, for example, the interior lighting that is created to complement the stylish instrument cluster and is specially focused to highlight all of the Murano’s elegant touches. Nothing spells luxury in any vehicle more than the level of comfort you experience as you drive. That’s why the second generation Murano features new, high quality leather covered power seats that provide greater support and comfort with eight-way adjustment and a memory function on the driver’s side and four-way adjustment for the front passenger. Second row passengers are just as well catered for in bolstered leather seats that can be instantly flattened if extra storage space is required. A press of a remote control button in the dash or rear compartment raises the seats again so you don’t have to reach in and pull them up yourself. Such integration of modern technologies was vital to make the new Murano as appealing as its predecessor was, so Nissan engineers have pulled out all the stops. You can now enjoy the proximity sensing intelligent key allowing you to unlock the vehicle without having to insert the key in the door lock. And for extras security, the Murano automatically locks itself if you move too far away. You don’t need to turn the key in the ignition any more: simply keep the intelligent key in your pocket and press the integrated start/stop button in the dash. A power-assisted tailgate can be opened and closed by remote control, either via a button on the key fob, the dashboard or on the tailgate, and an anti-pinch sensor prevents the tailgate closing if anything is accidentally in the way. Lateral stiffness has been improved by 95 percent, while tests show that vibrations have been reduced by 75 percent, which means a more serene cabin. With these solid underpinnings, the Murano is far more capable of capitalising on the raw power of the 264bhp, 3.5-litre V6, which has been voted the best engine in the world many times over by independent observers. Now Nissan engine designers have improved efficiency and performance even more, boosting the power output by 25bhp and increasing the torque by 7Nm, improving the top speed by a further 10kph. This is due in part to the fact that the V6 is mated to the latest generation Xtronic CVT transmission system, which has been extensively re-engineered to reduce frictional losses by 20 percent. The new transmission switches ratios much more quickly and is capable of changing its shift pattern in tune with the driving style, ultimately helping you to improve your fuel efficiency without having to sacrifice the joys of dynamic driving, whether you are on tarmac or heading off the beaten track. The Murano’s sporty sedan-style road-holding and comfort levels come courtesy of multi-link rear suspension and a McPherson strut-type system up front. Add to that anti-roll bars front and rear and performance dual-flow dampers, and you have an SUV that is incredibly stable and dynamic at speed. I t’s very easy to think of an automatic transmission merely as “not a manual”. But there’s a lot more to it than that. Nissan’s latest model Maxima has one of the most advanced automatic transmissions available – the Xtronic S-CVT (right). But to explain why it’s so good, we’ll have to have a quick technology lesson. The CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is unlike a standard automatic gearbox because it does away with separate cogs for each gear in favour of a high-tensile steel belt attached to two pulleys: the first is the ‘drive pulley’ which delivers torque force generated by the engine, while the sport) electronic logic control mode. This serves second is the ‘driven pulley’ which sends that to increase the sporty feel of the car under torque force to the car’s wheels. The diameters acceleration by keeping the engine speed higher of both pulleys are continually adjusted to ensure and also maintains the engine speed during the optimum gear ratio for the conditions. This is cornering to keep the car more stable, balanced done smoothly, so you avoid the ‘shift-shock’ or and therefore predictable. It also allows for lurching associated with regular automatics or automatic engine braking, which means that manual gearboxes. whether upshifting or downshifting, the Ds mode So what makes the Xtronic S-CVT superior? Xtronic S-CVT delivers a better fuel economy The cumulative effect is that, with an Xtronic over S-CVT, you’re in the right gear at the right time, automatics, thanks to ASC choosing the best all the time. and most efficient shift pattern for the driving standard torque converter-equipped But there is yet another function of the conditions. Customers get the best of both S-CVT to further enhance the Maxima’s exciting worlds: the high performance and fuel efficiency character. Nissan has incorporated a Ds (drive of a manual transmission as well as the ease of use of an automatic. The Xtronic S-CVT has been specially tuned by Nissan’s engineers to match the Maxima’s sporty driving character One final benefit is when it comes to servicing as there are no fluid changes required for CVT gearboxes, so you save time and money. The Xtronic S-CVT is standard in Maximas on sale in the Middle East and ensures that the driver gets the thrills he or she expects from Nissan’s first premium 4-door sports sedan, while retaining the practicality and comfort that the company is famous for. 27 MOTORSPORTS www.eshiftmagazine.com The power and Nissan fields its hardcore racing GT-Rs and Fairlady Zs in Japan’s most popular motorsports series.
