Schedule for the week of December 22nd
Pastor’s Corner December 21, 2014 Schedule for the week of December 22nd-December 28th Dear People of Divine Savior and our cherished visitors: The key word for today is “Behold!” The word appears twice in today’s Gospel. Clearly, it is used to begin a very important statement in each case. The first usage is when the Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and bear a son. This son will be great and as Son of the Most High He will be given the throne of David to rule over the people. His kingship will be unending. David is seen as the great king who brought unity and peace to the people who considered themselves the chosen people of God. The Son Mary is to bear will take upon Himself the challenge of renewing that unity and peace. This time it is not going to involve drawing together various tribes; rather, it will be to lead the people in a renewal of their faith that will bring about peace and unity. However, we know only too well that the number of people who responded to Jesus’ establishing this spiritual unity were in the minority. The second use of the word “Behold!” is when Mary turns her will over to God and states that she will do what God asked her to. Mary retained her posture as one who chose to serve and not be served. No doubt that this prayerful disposition had a profound effect on Jesus because He would also see Himself and act as a servant, and a suffering one at that. Mary comes to her resolute decision to a great extent because of the relationship that was established between her and the angel. Both of them conducted themselves in a very assertive way. Mary was honest about her fears, the confusion over what the angels’ greeting meant, and her understandable concern about how this pregnancy would come about. Gabriel made no apologies, didn’t try to minimize anything, but gave Mary time to ponder the serious matters she was presented with. This is an excellent example of how we are to conduct our interactions with one another. We notice that Gabriel started with an affirmation and in the process of the conversation offered two additional ones. All three had to do with how Mary was blessed and how God would see to it that all concerns would be resolved because of God’s continuous and abundant favor. What would it be like if we began our conversations with an affirmation of the person we are speaking with? A fundamental ingredient is that we on a regular basis allow the voice of God to reassure us that God’s favor is with us and that whatever situation we are dealing with the Holy Spirit will provide the words and the wisdom to interact in a healthy way. How great it would be if in those few seconds our anger might be tamed so that it is our heart and soul talking and not our anger or other unpleasant feelings. We can still express our anger after we have offered a compliment; and the way we do that is simply to say in a calm but assertive voice, “I don’t like (name the behavior).” While some would say this practice is especially important when interacting with children and youth, in the end we would do well to include this practice in any of our conversations. Who knows, it could be the beginning of establishing the peace of Jesus in our world! ~Fr.
