LE TARBOUCHE BY MOUNA REBEIZ REPORT - MARCH 2015
Exhibition Overview
An exciting and thought-provoking exhibition presented by Mouna Rebeiz, a French Lebanese artist and
painter, took place at Saatchi Gallery from 23 February to 3 March 2015.
The exhibition, Le Tarbouche, showcased a development of Mouna’s ongoing work with the female form,
using the Tarbouche – as a traditional male symbol of virility in the Levant and across the Middle East - to
express the female as a complex combination of the dominant and submissive, the sophisticated and the
vulnerable.
Traditionally worn by men in the Levant and across the Middle East, the Tarbouche is redefined in Mouna’s
paintings alongside the traditional nude in a contradiction of feminine and the symbol of authority. Caught
between two worlds the female bodies jostle against the male trophy, expressing a powerful new freedom
which is both dominant and submissive.
Le Tarbouche is Mouna’s first solo exhibition in London. Brought up in Lebanon and educated in Paris, with
her characteristic mix of techniques of the ‘Old Masters’ to examine contemporary issues, Mouna’s paintings
represent a bridge between two worlds; East and West, male and female. She uses her works to explore the
human being and its psyche, a subject that fascinated her during her studies at the Sorbonne.
Having previously exhibited internationally, mainly in Paris with shows at Galerie Hubert Konrad, Galerie
Pierre Alain Challier and the FondationRicard, Mouna’s most recent exhibition was an exciting introduction
to the London art world.
The exhibition was open 7 days a week, 10am to 6pm with free entry.

Exhibition Catalogue
A 90 page catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition, including an essay by curator Sacha
Craddock and text by Mouna Rebeiz. The catalogue featured all of the paintings in the exhibition, as well as
others within the series; photographs of each tarbouche to be auctioned and narrative behind each design.

Designer Tarbouches
In tandem with Mouna’s exhibition of 14 paintings, a group of internationally renowned designers, artists,
and influencers were each asked by Mouna to reinvent a Tarbouche in their own style, creating a symbolic
and beautiful object for collectors.
Mouna partnered with these influential names from the worlds of fashion and design in order to continue the
dialogue of her exhibition in support of the charity ‘Innocence in Danger’ – a charity close to Mouna’s heart,
and with whom she has collaborated for some time. The charity is a world movement for the protection of
children against all forms of emotional and physical abuse.
Lanvin, Twiggy, Pucci, Elie Saab, Star Diamond, Philip Treacy, Giles Deacon, and Sandra Choi of Jimmy Choo
(to name but a few) all embraced the project, reinventing a Tarbouche for charity.
A selection of 15 Tarbouches were auctioned live by Sotheby’s on 27th March, and the remainder auctioned
online by Gavel & Grand. All proceeds from the sale of the tarbouches, as well as proceeds from the sale of
Mouna’s paintings, went to Innocence in Danger.
The following leaders from the worlds of fashion, design, and culture generously donated their time and ideas
to create their own unique perspective on the Tarbouche:

Launch Event
On the 26th February, a launch event was held to unveil the exhibition to media, key London influencers,
and Mouna’s contacts. The event took place at Saatchi Gallery and provided a unique opportunity for guests
to view Mouna Rebeiz’s paintings for the first time, as well as the one-off tarbouches created by some of the
world’s biggest fashion and design names.
With the designer creations set to be auctioned the next day (27th March) by Sotheby’s, the event also allowed
for interested parties to view the tarbouches up close before bidding.

Auction
Mouna Rebeiz, Homayra Sellier (Founder of Innocence in Danger) and Act IV worked together to secure
41 personalised tarbouches, with designs donated by a range of high profile creatives, including fashion
designers, architects, writers and actors. Each of these designers responded individually to the open brief,
resulting in a range of unique, handcrafted tarbouches. Some of these reflect the work of Mouna Rebeiz; or
conceptual reflections on the work of Innocence in Danger, such as pieces by Caroline Evans and Camila
Batmanghelidjh, both depicting wounded childhood dreams. These personal responses were highly admired
in the exhibition.
All the tarbouches were promoted on the online auction site Gavel & Grand and were globally accessible for
10 days prior to the Private View. Each collaborator contributed their words to the ‘story’ of their tarbouche,
further expanding on their connection both to Mouna as an artist, and the work of Innocence in Danger. Act
IV ensured maximum reach through regular communication with the Tarbouche Project network, and also
via the Gavel & Grand database.
A select 16 tarbouches were then sold in a live auction on Friday 27 February in the Saatchi Gallery, conducted
by Roxanne Zand of Sotheby’s. The live auction featured Elie Saab, Emilio Pucci, Lanvin, Zaha Hadid and
final surprise lot by Christian Lacroix. The event was preceded by brunch provided by Harry’s Bar where over
100 guests enjoyed Bellinis surrounded by Mouna’s paintings. The live auction raised over £30,000and the
online auction continued until 8 March, raising an additional £15,000 for Innocence in Danger UK.

internationally, mainly in Paris with shows at Galerie

Saatchi Gallery marks her introduction to the London
art world.
Mouna has partnered with a host of influential
names from the worlds of art, fashion, and design to
continue the dialogue of her exhibition in support of
the charity ‘Innocence in Danger’.
Lanvin, Twiggy, Bay Garnett, Naomie Harris, Star

All proceeds from these pieces, as well as proceeds
from the sale of Mouna’s paintings, will go towards
the charity, a world movement for the protection of
children against all forms of sexual abuse, a charity
close to Mouna’s heart.
Open to influences from both Lebanon and France,
Mouna became fascinated at an early age with the
emphasis both cultures place on the dual role of the
woman; the essence of femininity as an incongruous
mix of soft sensuality and commanding sophistication.
This childhood preoccupation comes to the fore in her
latest conceptual collection, placing the masculine
symbol of the Tarbouche at odds with its traditional
usage, and reinventing it as a new feminine emblem.
The exhibition will be open 7 days a week, 10am to
6pm with free entry. A complete list of participants

Notes to Editors:
About Mouna Rebeiz:
Mouna Rebeiz was born into a family of artists,
and demonstrated from an early age creativity in
abundance. She also showed a particular interest in
plastic arts. Growing up amidst musicians, artists,
and poets, notes and verse later influenced her work.
Fascinated by the human being and its psyche,
she studied psychology at the Sorbonne in Paris
and at Saint Joseph’s Universityin Beirut where she
completed her Masters in Psychology. She then based
herself between Europe and North America, to travel
widely and bring up her young family.
In 1995 Mouna began at the Cepiade Studio where
she met Alix De La Source, speaker at the Louvre
and specialist of 17th and 18th century painting
techniques. She introduced Mouna to the techniques
of the Grand Masters and helped her to develop her
style. From Abraham Pincas, artist and director of
Beaux Arts de Paris to Mohamad Al Rawas, Lebanese
artist and professor of Beaux Arts, Mouna perfected
her technique.
protection of children against any form of sexual
abuse. . Founded by HomayraSellier, the charity
gathers activists, internet specialists, lawyers, and
policy makers to raise international awareness of this
growing global blight.
Projects recently undertaken in the UK include
working with @mandatenow on changing the
legislation around the mandatory reporting of known
and suspected child abuse in regulated activities. The
charity is also working towards the delivery of a UK
educational programme for parents, children and
schools about staying safe online. In addition, their
commitment to reaching more young people with
the tools for safety and prevention on the internet
is manifest in a new smartphone app which, once
fully translated into English, will launch in all English
speaking countries around the world.
