In 2009, a hunting accident occurred that would forever change the lives of two men
passionate about the pursuit of whitetail deer. Hurricane Safety System’s co-founders,
Terry Goodell and Tim Squires were forced to re-evaluate their most favorite pastime
when a hunting partner fell nearly fourteen feet after his nylon treestand attachment
failed. The fall caused severe internal injuries nearly claiming the life of their friend
who now spends his days confined to a wheelchair as a result of a spinal cord injury
sustained in the accident. From tragedy an opportunity was born - Hurricane Safety
Systems identified a gap between safety standards and current practices - in short, they
saw a better way to make hunting safe.
When is a hunter most at risk for injury while hunting from an elevated platform?
When the hunter makes the transition on and off the hunting platform to the ladder
apparatus. Having made this transition thousands of times and experiencing their own
personal close calls and minor injuries, Goodell and Squires set out to develop a product
suite that specifically addresses the needs of hunters while hanging, entering and exiting
elevated treestand platforms.
