Shortly thereafter, I began doing basic guitar work, setups, and pickup installs. Coming from a line of accomplished craftsmen and engineers, I aspire to Master grade/Artisan quality in all of my designs and work. I was woodworking LONG before I began working on guitars and really love working on fine instruments. I am a Fender Strat cat, Olympic white ‘62, and favor Marshalls, Mesa, and Fender. At age 15, I toured the original ARP factory in Lexington, Massachusetts. At that time, they were servicing and refining the ARP Avatar Guitar Synthesizers. I had already been playing ARP Odyssey and Micro-Moog, so this was pretty cool and made a big impression on me. A year or so later, I toured the original Lexicon factory in Waltham, Massachusetts. It was so cool to see the labs, I knew I wanted to work in audio electronics. Later, as an assembler for Tec-Con Corporation, I assembled and terminated literally tens of thousands of Amp, Molex and Panduit Ribbon cable assemblies for legendary audio companies such as Ursa Major, Lexicon, Symetrix, Mutron, Deltalab, Orban and dbx. Some influences I’d like to acknowledge: Pete Cornish, Phil Taylor, Alan Rogan, Bob Bradshaw, Charles Mason, Tom Scholz, Richard Stanley, Dan Healy, John Cutler, Steve Parrish, and Arthur Ohlens. In 1984, an interest in the recording process, and studios, led me to study Recording Engineering with Bob Rock (the Cult, Blue Murder, Metallica). I began doing installation work in local studios and assistant-engineering friends' demo recordings. In 1993, I relocated to Seattle from New England. In 1994/1995, I worked on 3 studio installs, each having much custom cabling and unique patch panels. A wide variety of work followed with three large pedal-boards in 1996, several rack systems and hundreds of repairs. 1999 found me working as if in a dream, restoring Jimi Hendrix's Datamix console for the EMP. This is the original from Electric Lady's Studio A. In 2004, I relocated to the Los Angeles area to be close to more opportunities for full time employment. 3 01-01-07 4 Mad Creations Unltd. About Mad Creations Unltd. I specialize in high performance electric and acoustic guitar setups, and vintage to 1980's Marshall maintenance and restoration. I have built 75 pedal-boards to date and I have designed and assembled 49 guitar/bass rack systems. Offering a personalized sound design service to musicians, and recording engineers/producers, I have over 20 years' experience with pedals, pedal-boards, tube amps, rack gear, guitars, custom cables and harnesses, patch bays and custom interface panels for studios. Increasing work with rack systems, pedalboards, recording studio wiring and custom electronics projects led to the creation of Mad Creations Unltd. in 1990. A wide variety of positions in the electronics, computer, medical and aerospace industries have given me much experience sourcing hard-to-find or obsolete parts. I am very insistent on using the correct parts for replacement, and regularly practice upgrading with components proven for sound, reliability, and long life. Starting in 1981, and full-time in 1986, Mad Creations Unltd. has setup over 2,500 guitars and serviced more than 800 tube amplifiers. For more than 10 years, I provided over 100 local New England players with superior setups and reliable, consistent service with attention to detail and craft. 01-01-07 5 Guitar Projects Tadashi San The Tadashi-San strat is a completely custom left-handed guitar with unique appearance and exceptional performance. I worked with my customer and assisted in specifying all components, helping him to build the ’Guitar of his dreams’. Special orders were placed with Warmoth for the neck and body. It has a quilted maple top in a unique color combination of amber and black. The frets were leveled and highly polished and the neck was carefully fitted. It is equipped with a Power bridge Piezo Vibrato, Custom EMG 89’s, and features elaborate custom wiring and full shielding. The complete guitar was tested and carefully set up prior to delivery to its owner. He is very pleased with this fine and beautiful example of custom guitar building. 2001 #1 Custom Strat 01-01-07 6 Top Detail showing depth of Quilting 3D effect Bottom detail of control cavity showing neat, meticulous work and full copper shielding 01-01-07 7 1969 Les Paul ‘Magic Man’ This instrument is the Les Paul guitar heard in the 1976 Heart hit recording “Magic Man” from ‘Dreamboat Annie’. It was a 1969 Gibson LP Deluxe, which has had several modifications over the years. The guitar’s pickups were converted to humbuckers in 1976 just prior to recording ‘Dreamboat Annie’. It was completely rebuilt and modified by me in 1999 and 2000. The original top had been mostly removed, so I removed the remainder I installed a new AAAA flame maple top, AAAA flame maple Center and Cocobolo strips. The finger board was completely restored with new fretwork and ‘mountain’ style binding. I installed a sustainer system and custom control configuration. I fabricated several Cocobolo parts for the instrument. The top and entire instrument were shaped, contoured and finished with gun stock oil. This one-of-a-kind guitar was delivered incomplete due to lack of funds. Preparing to fit top pieces 'Runner' strips are Cocobolo Yes! This was a 1969 gold top LP! I didn’t do it! The photos show detail of scalloping of top four frets and the replaced and scalloped ‘shark fin’ inlay, which I installed and shaped under a microscope. I completed this work mere weeks before this feature was unveiled on the Steve Vai JEM guitars. Previously I was only aware of fully scalloped necks. The scalloping on the last 4 (frets 21-24) allows for better access, more consistent tone, longer sustain and minimizes ‘pinging’. The guitar, featuring a thick brass pickguard, head and neck inlays with programmable sequencing pattern LEDs, was originally customized by Mike Lull Guitar Works in 1977/78. I began a complete restoration on it during the summer of 2001, after not being used for 10 years. I repaired numerous de-laminations and worn out structural elements. The LED circuits were repaired and bullet proofed. Original pickups were returned to the pickguard, a vintage on board preamplifier installed and the guitar was meticulously rewired. Schaller machines were installed and all screws were replaced with stainless steel The frets were leveled, crowned and polished. It was then set up carefully and the results were outstanding sound and sustain. A one-of-a-kind strat with considerable pedigree, it is now being used in its ‘second lifetime’. This is the ‘Love Alive’ guitar. I restored it completely in 1997. It belongs to Roger Fisher. 01-01-07 17 Standard Strat Upgrade List The following are modifications I commonly perform to improve the playability and sonics of guitars: Round, de-burr, and polish fret ends Level neck mating surfaces (increases sustain, tone transfer) All stainless steel screws, countersunk (vintage correct) oval head Phillips #1, #2 Change pickup mounting screws to (vintage correct) oval head Stainless Change pickup mounting springs to Surgical tubing Cut truss rod access nook (if adjustment is at body end) Install hotter or differently voiced pickups, mix-n-match for unique sounds Install larger, or taller fret wire, Dunlop #6105, #6100 Install R-Wind /R-Polarity middle pickup (cancels hum in positions 2 & 4 of 5 way switch) Install Sperzel Trim- Lok tuning machines (In my opinion, the best there is) Install vintage bone, ivory, or Micarta string nut U.S.A Switchcraft #11 T-S, or #12 T-R-S ¼” output jack U.S.A. made control potentiometers, upgrade quality or change value U.S.A. 5-way # 1532 Centralab – correct traditional part Install crisper capacitor (prevents loss of highs at reduced volumes) Change out tone capacitor for different value, or vintage part Dozens of possible rewiring configurations Install copper shielding inside Instrument, with star grounding scheme Install shielded cable to the output jack Install fender TBX tone control circuit (Passive) Shorten / trim bridge saddle height screws Scallop all, or some of the finger board 01-01-07 18 Sustainer Upgrades Some original sustainer guitars (original Kramer Sustainer Guitars) have become weaker and less sensitive over time. Originally invented and designed by Floyd Rose (The Man), the design and manufacturing rights were later purchased by Roundelay Music. They refined the system design and increased sensitivity (Refined System). This is currently found in the Jackson PC-1 guitars, as well as some ESP’s. We have found no one who has been able to repair the originals satisfactorily due to the potted module found in them. The best way to repair/upgrade a weakened Original Kramer guitar is to install the Refined System. The Refined System is not an exact replacement for the original, and so requires routing of a larger cavity, larger cover plate, and careful installation. I am one of only a couple of Luthiers able to offer this system as a retrofit and can adapt it to almost any guitar. This is the original from Electric Lady's Studio A. Built in 1969 at a cost of $60,000, it is one of the first consoles designed for music recording. 4/99 Beginning Restoration Restoration in process The Console Completely Restored at EMP 10/99. Pre/Eq modules are M968B, Faders are API 01-01-07 20 One-of-a –Kind, 1969 Datamix M-968-B Custom made for Hendrix’s N.Y.C. Electric Lady Studios. This revolutionary console boasts 36 inputs, 6 subgroups, 24 outputs, 4 stereo outputs, Para-Graphic Eqs, 55 db preamps, 24 Buss, and 6 x 6 Echo Matrix. Restored to near perfect original appearance (ca. June ’69) by Scott Dunham and Mark Willett summer of 1999, Seattle, W. 01-01-07 21 Sample Rack The project’s objective was to consolidate three separate guitar signal processing systems into one rack with three separate pedal board control panels. Each had been used successfully for a time and it was necessary to have fewer external connections and fewer overall pieces of gear, resulting in faster setup/tear down of the system. It’s design was conceived by Tommy Martin, with details designed and implemented by myself. It features Synthesizer, Piezo, and Amp /Effect modeling capabilities, with Recording /Looping, and analog and digital outputs. Equipment and modifications designed and integrated by me include: Component upgrades to improve quality of sound Added connectivity to provide enhanced flexibility Main pedal board controller changes presets and selects secondary pedal boards Custom mixer to provide additional functions including cue monitoring with audio mute of channel and master, effects insertion, and stereo VCA outputs Added sub-mixer to provide dry signal mix and multiple outputs to drive multiple equipments Custom installed Midi merge to provide additional Midi control input Integrated “Talk Box” for voice control Sample Rack front - birds-eye view Careful planning went into the construction, so that all functions are accessible, visible, and maintainable. The systems design took 2 years with many revisions before the current consolidation. Development coincided with the design/ construction of the Main Pedal Board with 2 MIDI controllers, Volume pedals and switches for most functions. The 2 mixers are the only 01-01-07 22 handmade units in the rack. All other devices were purchased. Testing has been performed incrementally to ensure quality and low noise performance. The system allows the user to play guitar, piezo (acoustic sound), and synthesizer into a recorder looping unit, and then play any of the above on top of the loop playing back. Unlimited combinations of sound are possible with relative ease of control. The acoustic pre-Amp has pre or post compression. The pedals are in series before the modeler. The master mixer adds dry signals (each) to the loop recording. The synthesizer guitars (Parker, Fender), can actually step both racks through the presets by way of the midi merge. It is fully patchable to enable endless configurations. It can be controlled by one person - enabling a virtual one – man – band. With practice, any style of music can be enhanced greatly by this system. It is also designed to interface with the Sample Rack. This can be achieved with custom patch panels and color-coded snakes. It is the result of ten years of constant design, R&D, and experiments started by Tommy Martin and completed by both of us. Many unique routings and wiring configurations were developed during the course of its evolution to arrive at the ultimate guitar rack system. I performed all detailed design, construction and testing. It provides for combinations of sound and effects pre-programmed into banks of memory which are selected and activated for use via the associated pedal board during live performances, studio recording, motion picture scoring, and virtuallyany other type of audio production. It features an all analog source signal path; All effects are returned in parallel, just like in the studio. (Although the Vortex can feed the Eventide if desired). All preamp inputs utilize Isolation transformers (Ebtech), as well as the master outputs of the Rack. (Crimson). With studio and laboratory wiring principles used throughout, only the finest components, and raw materials were selected, including: Gotham, Canare, Mogami, Neutrik, Deltron (Gold contacts where possible), Switchcraft, Connectronics, ELCO, HUBBEL, MARINCO, Daniel Wood Head, Middle Atlantic, all stainless or black oxide fasteners. All devices Isolated from rack rail. The system features several new and unique capabilities designed and integrated by me including: Parallel compression routing Multiple effects in series or parallel combinations Midi controlled motorized preamp controls Morphing effects Simultaneous volume adjustment/Pedals, Vocoder Fully loaded TC 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay Line/Sampler (one of only about 14 in the world) Loaded Eventide H-3000 SE Ultra Harmonizer processors Isolation transformers on preamp inputs and outputs Bullet proofing for reliability It is complete and works as designed and sounds unbelievable!
