INFLUENCE
THE CONDITION OF ALL.
As United Way of Acadiana celebrates 60 years, our commitment
to supporting our communities has grown into a quest to create
long lasting change for the people of Acadiana.
mailed to their homes on a monthly basis to remove barriers to
early learning.
2009 can be defined by “new beginnings” as a result of the PACT
United. With your support, we have launched a “generation of
effort” to help children and youth achieve their potential, build
financial stability in families and help people meet their own
basic needs. Together, we focus on education, earnings and
essentials to make the greatest possible impact for the future
of Acadiana.
As a result of a collaboration between the Acadiana Asset
Building Coalition, Department of Social Services and 232-HELP/
LA 2-1-1 Earn It! Keep It! Save It! was formed. This opportunity
provides free tax preparation and education service for low to
moderate income families. Together, we are helping to reduce
the amount of Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) funds left on the
table by families struggling to make ends meet. Last year, more
than 29 million dollars were left unclaimed in the region.
The PACT United encouraged collaboration and innovation to
remove obstacles for students at risk of not graduating from
high school and parents struggling for financial self-sufficiency.
In the end, 53 programs were funded by United Way of Acadiana
to help neighbors gain access to these opportunities.
Serving as the Board Chair during such a pivotal year for United
Way of Acadiana was a great privilege. In a year of change, the
unwavering commitment from fellow board members, donors,
volunteers and staff helps us to keep the promises made in the
PACT United.
2009 also marked the beginning of many new and innovative
partnerships for United Way of Acadiana.
I look forward to being part of long-lasting measurable change
by United Way of Acadiana. Thank you for your support of United
Way of Acadiana. Thank you for choosing to LIVE UNITED.
United Way of Acadiana served as one of nine founding
organizations to establish the Lafayette Parish Public
Education Stakeholders Council (LaPESC) with the common
commitment to improve overall academic achievement, to
eliminate the achievement gap, and to increase the high
school graduation rate.
The Women’s Leadership Council formed a movement of women
united to influence the condition of children in Acadiana through
leadership, philanthropy and advocacy. As a result, the Dolly
Parton Imagination Library was launched in October. Today,
more than 2,300 children under the age of 5 receive books

early learning & literacy: our pact for education
One of the most effective approaches to develop strong literacy
skills for a child is to inspire the love of reading and learning at
an early age. However, on average, only 4 books can be found
in low-income homes and a significant number of parents have
low reading levels.
To help families overcome this obstacle, and in support of our
PACT for Education, United Way of Acadiana hosted Day of
Literacy on October 1st .
United Way of Acadiana’s Day of Literacy marked the official
launch of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library as well as shared
reading activities at community Head Start Centers throughout

CONNECTING THE DOTS FOR LOCAL TEENS
United Way of Acadiana volunteers inspired over 4,000 high
school students in Acadiana by volunteering at the 2009 Career
Connections Expo.
Approximately 200 volunteers participated in the Reality
Store experience by posing important questions to students
focusing on career and educational choices. Over 700 hours of
volunteer service were donated by volunteers who shared their
time with local 10th grade students. These volunteers brought
tough choices to life by teaching students about the costs of
transportation, housing, family life, leisure and entertainment.
