A very warm welcome to the historic and picturesque County of Wiltshire, renowned throughout
the world for its mysterious stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury forming a designated
UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with its white chalk horses, beautiful rolling countryside
and historic towns and villages.
In addition to the principal market towns steeped in history and tradition, we have exquisite
villages and the beautiful City of Salisbury which, having developed and grown from the site of
an iron age fort about 2,500 years ago, became established as a town in the eleventh century.
To this day Salisbury cathedral remains home to one of only four surviving copies of the Magna
Carta, one of the most famous documents in the world dating back over 800 years. This
document remains a cornerstone of the British Constitution to this day.
Wiltshire is situated in the South West of England and is easily accessible by motorway, rail
and air.

The law makes a clear distinction between a religious and a civil ceremony. This means that you
may not hold a religious ceremony on premises authorised for civil
ceremonies, and you may not hold a civil ceremony in a place of worship.
Before you can marry or register your civil partnership, each of you must give formal Notice of your
intention in person. Notices can be given up to one year in advance, but not less than 28 clear days
before your ceremony date. Please contact your local Register Office for advice.

Salisbury
Our Ceremony Rooms
Wiltshire Registration Service can offer six beautiful ceremony rooms located within our main
registration offices throughout the county. All of our ceremony rooms have disabled access and
are decorated to a high standard.
Chippenham
A Saxon town which dates from approximately 600AD and is believed to be the location King
Alfred may well have burnt the cakes! Another famous resident was Robert Peel founder of the
Metropolitan Police in 1829.
The historic City of Salisbury with its magnificent and famous cathedral is home to one of only
four of the surviving Magna Carta documents and is surrounded by rolling chalk downlands.
Nearby is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge.
Wyndham Room and The Library, Bourne Hill, Salisbury Two stunning rooms, providing
Georgian architecture and grandeur for your special day. Bourne Hill was once the residence of
the Wyndham family. The ceremony rooms, building frontage and adjacent park provide
excellent settings for photographs.

Trowbridge
The first reference to the town's greatest industry - cloth - comes
in 1306. The prosperity of the local cloth trade continued to grow
and by 1820 Trowbridge was a factory town of some
importance with 15 factories. County Hall which hosts our
ceremony rooms opened in 1940 when Trowbridge became the
administrative centre for Wiltshire.
Throughout Wiltshire we have over 70 stunning and diverse venues to choose from; we are
confident we can offer you a venue to make your ceremony a special, memorable and enjoyable
occasion.

Combination Ceremonies – A modern take on a traditional idea!
Civil Partnerships
Perhaps you would like to celebrate your Wiltshire ceremony in the great outdoors, a family home
or garden or other location special to you as a couple? Don’t worry we can solve the dilemma for
you through our Combination Ceremony.
The law in this country enables same sex couples to choose between entering into marriage or
forming a civil partnership. If you have decided you would prefer a civil partnership our
registration team will be happy to work with you to create a unique and individual ceremony to
make you day very special. You can choose to form your partnership at a Registration Office or
Approved Venue. You may also wish to consider our Combination Ceremony.
• A Combination Ceremony combines a small legal ceremony (for the couple and two witnesses at your local Registration Office) followed by a second ceremony,
personalised to your own specifications and wishes, at your chosen venue.
• Both can be conducted on the same day but must be conducted within 28 days of each other. The legal ceremony must take place first. Where possible, the same celebrant will conduct both of your celebrations.

Vows, promises, music and readings
Music:
A civil wedding leaves plenty of scope to make the ceremony a personal statement of your love
and commitment to each other.
You can choose to have traditional, classic or modern music for your ceremony. Something
which perhaps has special meaning to you both? You may decide to have live musicians or
use a music system to stream your music. For more information or guidance please contact us.

Well-chosen readings can really help to personalize your ceremony. They are a wonderful way of
involving friends or relatives on the day. You can choose something romantic, funny or
poignant. Why not create something original by writing it yourself? Finding the right words to

half an hour before the start of the ceremony, either together or individually - the choice is yours!
This is to check that the details to be entered into the marriage register are correct and talk

Where can I have my ceremony?
As the Celebration of Marriage ceremony has no legal standing, it can be held in a location of
your choice. Alternatively, you may wish to choose one of our approved venues, or one of our
beautiful ceremony rooms.

Citizenship Ceremony
What could be more special than welcoming a child into a family? Whether a new baby or an
older child, this is a time to celebrate.
Congratulations if you are in the process of becoming a new British Citizen. A Citizenship
ceremony marks the final part of the process of becoming a new citizen and we welcome the
opportunity to celebrate this special occasion with you! Group ceremonies are held regularly in
our main registration buildings and are usually attended by a local dignitary. You may however
choose to have a private ceremony instead of attending a group ceremony. We can organise this
for you.
• A Welcoming or Naming ceremony provides a unique opportunity to make promises to guide, nurture and protect your child. It can include promises from specially chosen adults to show how much this child means to them and to offer you their support in your child’s future.
• We can provide a personal, relaxed and happy ceremony, tailored to your wishes, which can be held wherever and whenever you choose.
• Children of any age can have a Welcoming Ceremony and if you have more than one child they can all take part in the same ceremony.
• This could also be combined with other ceremonies. Please speak to our ceremonies team to find out more.
During the ceremony our new citizens are asked to make promises and swear or affirm an oath
to our Queen and country. The ceremony concludes when the new citizens are presented with
their certificate of naturalisation.
