CHAPTER #1238
April 2010
Message from Your Director
If it were possible to ‘will’ the weather
into compliance, we would have had a
warm and sunny ride on the Big Cat
Caper on April 3 following the chapter
meeting. But it was not meant to be in
spite of the fact that many of us gave
our best, focused karma and rode our
bikes in that morning in hopes of a
good days ride. For my efforts, I got to
ride home in the rain, which, at the very
least was a good pre-season check of
my rain gear and my foul-weather
driving skills.
In the end, the day’s rains rolled in
early and the Big Cat Caper was
rescheduled for April 17. Nonetheless, I
take my hat off to Greg and Bill for
pushing the season to make the breakout ride as early as possible. Sure, we
got rained out and delayed for a couple
of weeks; but had we been able to ride
that day, we would have pushed the

season to start by at least a week or two
and that was well worth the effort!
The chapter meeting was well attended
with a great turnout of members. In spite
of the impending weather, there were
many that rode that morning. The meeting agenda was full and we seemed to
cover a lot of topics in short time.
We had a quick award presentation
for the Indy Chapter #1 bowling league.
I have yet to speak with anyone that
participated in the winter bowling
league that didn’t have a great time.
On several occasions, I have heard
many of our members speak of looking
forward to the start of the next bowling
league season. Keep this in mind for a
post-riding-season chapter activity.
And congratulations are in order to our
winning team and to everyone that
participated in the league.
By now, I hope you have made time
to sit down with your calendar for the
next few months and inked in some
opportunities to ride with the chapter.
Greg Shipley and Bill Keesling have
pulled together a full and varied
schedule of rides and activities. We will
kick things off with the breakout ride
and the Big Cat Caper on April 17 followed by the Orientation Ride on April
24. Look for things to really pick up in
May with the Nation’s Ride on the 1st,
the Gasthof Amish Village on the 22
and then the month culminates in our
chapter landmark event, Flags For Heroes. You won’t want to miss being a
part of this event and interest is building every day. Stay tuned for more
information on this event and other
Memorial Day activities.
June brings a growing list of activities that start with the chapter outing to
an Indians Baseball game on June 4
and a ride to French Lick on the following day. This June will see Jack Schoettle lead another group to the Smokey
Mountains for a fun ride on some of the
most beautiful roads in America. For
three consecutive weekends, members
will have their choice of H.O.G. state
rallies in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.
Bill and Greg have planned a Museum
Ride on June 26 and the month is
capped off on the 28th by H.O.G.’s
global event of “MILLION MILE
MONDAY”; be looking for a renewed
and determined effort to hit the 5 million mile goal.
I hope you are feeling the excitement
rise with the recent temperatures as we
head into the riding season. I look
forward to seeing you and all of our
chapter members in the wind.
Ride Far, Be
Safe, & Enjoy,
Ken
No Pro-Rated Chapter Dues
Chapter dues are $12, regardless if
you renew in January or April. If you
have underpaid, please contact Bill
Rushton.
This is important because our budget
is determined on current membership
renewing at $12. Budget provides the
means for chapter activities and events.
Membership cards can be picked up
at chapter meetings. If unable to attend,
to expedite receipt of your card, include
a self-addressed stamped envelope
when submitting renewal form and
your card will be mailed to you.

miles this year. If you don’t think you ride enough, keep track
of them because every mile will help us achieve this goal!
Charity Fund, Denise Benn: 50/50 raffle of $239 went to
Kurt Huneck. Gift cards to Greg Shipley & Sunny Britton.

APRIL 2010
Report From Your Assistant Director
Hi Everyone,
I would like to start this article by asking everyone to keep
Ken Weisman in your hearts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
We are well into the month of April and have had some outstanding weather for riding. Unfortunately, we had some rain
on the day of our first scheduled ride and it had to be postponed. Hopefully we will have great weather for the ride this
weekend. We would like to see everyone come out for the
“Big Cat Caper.”
Last week 11 officers were able to attend Primary Officer
Training (P.O.T.) in Milwaukee. I have been fortunate enough
to attend a couple of these sessions over the last 10 years and I
always learn something new and exciting. It is amazing how
much you learn from talking with other chapter officers. It
makes you thankful for having a great dealer and chapter relationship as well as having a great membership. You would be
surprised how many chapters are left out in the cold when it
comes to having dealership and membership support. This
year’s training was very different from years past. First, this
was the largest session ever put together: over 1200 officers
attended P.O.T. Second, HOG combined Europe, Asia and
South Africa members with US members. There was over 450
officers from these countries and 750 US officers. There were
25 countries represented at this year’s session. This was first
time that HOG has done a combined session and it was a huge
hit! Even across the pond, all these chapters had similar issues
and stories to tell. Over the
course of the next few months
Ken and I are asking each officer
to put together a small
article on what they learned
from the training and provide
that learning to the group.
Flags4Heroes is coming together nicely and looks like we
will meet our goal of 100 bikes.
I’m still looking for 2 or 3 volunteers to come to the War Memorial around 3:15 on May 29th
to help setup the speaker system,
awning and some chairs. I will
have all stuff staged at the War Memorial; we just need some
folks to help set it up. Please let me know at the May meeting
if you can help. We will be staging at the dealership between
7:30 and 8:00 am; 8:15 departure for Louisville to help them
with their closing ceremonies again. A member of the
Louisville chapter will meet us at rest stop like last year and
take us in. They are going to parade on a different route and
have parking setup for us. They will provide box lunches
again. We will start to head back up to Indy around 12:45 and
arrive at the War Memorial around 3:50 pm.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting in May.
Michael Boudreau
Assistant Director
Please do NOT park in the Service Lane (against the building) during the meetings, event rides, and/or
activities. This is for the Service department and the customers waiting to be served for Bike Service.

American
Sign Language is a
beautiful
visual
language that expresses itself through
facial expressions, body movements
and many different handshapes. The
signs for this month all use a “flat”
hand-shape; your fingers and thumb
are closed together.
Hello: Is like a small salute.
Good, Thank-you and You’re
Welcome: Are all the same sign but
3
the difference is contextual. Move the
fingertips of your right flat hand from
your lips forward. For emphasis, place
the back of your right hand into your
left flat hand held in front of your
chest.
Morning: Place your fingers of the left
flat hand-shape in the crook of the extended right arm then bring the right
flat-hand-shape upward toward the
face. Imagine your left
horizontal arm is the horizon and your
right hand is the sun rising up over the
horizon in the morning.
Next month we will learn three more
handshapes; the “one”, “curved”, and
“five” handshapes and learn how to
sign “How are you?” and “I’m fine.”
If you’d like to get a jumpstart on learning these signs, check out
www.lifeprint.com, a great userfriendly website for beginners.

Message from Chapter Safety Officer
Well it finally has arrived…Good
weather for some great riding with
your friends from Indianapolis
H.O.G. Chapter #1. But before we
take that first “group ride” I would
like to share some good information
from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
MSF’s Guide to Group Riding
Motorcycling is primarily a solo
activity, but for many, riding as a
group – whether with friends on a
Saturday or Sunday morning ride
or with an organized motorcycle rally – is the epitome of the
motorcycling experience.
Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride:
Arrive prepared AND arrive on time with a full gas tank.
Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and
fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on next page).
Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures.
The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the
group’s riding style.
Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven
riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups,
each with a lead and sweep rider.
Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a
cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.
Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation allows a
proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider
has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to
hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the
next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of
the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. Singlefile formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of
poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or
maneuvering room is needed.
Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you
would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to
get entangled.
Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may
catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the
group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without
pressure to ride too fast to catch up.
If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group
should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup.
Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.
For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call
for assistance as the situation warrants.
Ride Safe, Will Huston

2010 Activities –
check out the calendar on pages 7 and 8!
“Wow” what a great start to riding
season! I sure hope the weekends
will be as nice throughout the year
as the days during the week have
been so far. I have just a few notes
and then we can get back outside to
ride and have fun!
Orientation Ride (April 24th)
The purpose of the orientation
ride is to introduce newer members
to group riding. It’s never a bad idea
to review, either, so everyone is
welcome! We will start at 10:00am
sharp with open discussions and instruction at HD of Indy. A
20-30 mile ride will follow, using all the elements of riding
generally found around our area. We will end back at the dealership for more group discussion and refreshments
Gasthof Amish Village Ride (May 22)
Bill K, Will H. and I previewed this route just yesterday. It
will be a beautiful ride requiring moderate skills, about 280
miles round trip. We plan on leaving the Indianapolis Harley
Davidson Dealership at 9:00am with one stop down in the
Bloomington area. Not sure if we have time to shop at Bloomington HD this time but we will put it on the schedule for the
French Lick ride later this summer. We have reserved the
dining room for a wonderful Buffet $9.99 or you can order the
specials priced between $7.00 – $10.00. We will meander
back on good roads through the Amish countryside and enjoy
the sites of a different way of life.
Indian’s Game (June 4th)
I need everyone who plans on attending the escorted ride to
the Indians game pay for their tickets at the May meeting or
make arrangements to see me before the 24th of May. This is a
fun family event which sold out last year . . . we still have
about 50 tickets left for $11.00 each in section 107 behind the
home team dugout. It’s a Friday night 7:00 start June 4th kickstands up 6pm at the dealership.
I attended primary officer training last week end and learned
a lot – but most of all we are a group that gets it – we Ride and
have Fun! We welcome all ride suggestions. Remember the
craziest ideas produce some of the best events. See you at the
Big Cat Caper this Saturday! Don’t forget to layer for the cool
weather.

Also don’t forget about Flags4Heroes on May 29. See
Mike’s article on page 1 for details

APRIL 2010
Big Cat Caper (April 17)
Kick stands up at 9am!
Nations Ride (May 1)
Ride through north central
Indiana. Mexico and Peru are a
few of the cities named after
other countries that we will visit
or at least ride through. There is
ZERO interstate riding planned
for this ride.
Chapter Rides Offer More This Year
For a couple of years now I've wondered how to get more
HOG members to participate in group rides. This year I'm trying some of Greg and My ideas, as well as suggestions from
other chapter members: several rides this year there will be a
chance for free lunch. So far Nations ride and Brown County
have free lunches. We are also going to interesting places to
see and explore. Also continuing ride all the way back to
Indy, not ending at a destination. Anyone is free to leave any
ride at anytime they desire on any ride. Over night rides were
popular in the past, so we have 1, possibly 2 planned this year:
The Museum Ride in June and the Rolling on The River ride
in August. We are even letting a couple of HOG members
plan and lead some rides in September. Now all we need are
more members to participate in the rides! We all know the
more the merrier. Maybe it's just me, but there aren't many
feelings better than rolling through a small town and see
everyone stop what they are doing to wave or give peace signs,
or to get the truckers talking on the CB radios, or to have
others wave us through a 4-way stop or intersection where
they have the right of way. Remember – when a Saturday ride
is cancelled due to weather, we will try again on Sunday, or a
week later if needed.
Now it's really up to you, our fellow HOG's to take an active
part in your HOG chapter. We can plan good rides, but we
cannot succeed without all members becoming more active.
Hope to see many more bikes and riders for all future rides.
Let's RIDE TO LIVE, AND LIVE TO RIDE together.
Can’t Ride on Saturday or Just Want More Rides?
Beginning the first Tuesday in June, I will lead evening and
night rides, leaving HD north at 6:00PM. This will be every
Tuesday I'm available or weather permits. Some will be dinner rides to bike nights around the area, others to other cities
for a bite to eat then back. Will also add Wednesday as many
of the local Bike Nights are on Wednesday. Destinations will
be announced a few days before each ride. So make plans; any
Tuesday or Wednesday evening in June, August, September
and October. I'm gone on Yankee Doodle Ride most of July.
