ProfIle of a True WarrIor - Westside Alumni Association
Volume 16.1 Fall 2008 a publication of the WESTSIDE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 1101 South 90th Street Omaha, NE 68124 | 402.390.2183 | westside66.org Profile of a True Warrior John Atkinson, graduated from WHS in 1987, and is now a medical-device sales representative for Bard Peripheral Vascular. He’s married to Lori (Krajicek) Atkinson, also of the class of ‘87, and they have three children - Machaela (11), Andrea (8), and Christopher (5). John savors his weekly golf game and loves supporting Husker football. Such demographics are the hallmarks of a Nebraska “The Good Life” experience here in the Midwest – the typical good life. That’s why those who know John so well were shocked to learn of his diagnosis in 2007 with Stage IV, inoperable lung cancer. John was then 38 years old. He had never smoked. John was the picture of health. He had started golfing when he was 13, was a three-sport athlete at WHS, and got more into golf in college. After having been athletic all of his life, it was understandable that cancer was a curve ball he hadn’t planned on. John later shared in a Golf Digest interview that the diagnosis of inoperable cancer “just completely throws your world upside down. And there are two things you can do: You can either give up or you can continue to fight. I’ve got a beautiful wife and three kids. I will never quit fighting.” John has been seizing this hardship and driving it into an opportunity to raise awareness of lung cancer with anyone he can reach, and has he been reaching folks…with some help from a Westside buddy he has had since the sixth grade. One of John’s 1987 classmates, Terry Beutler, submitted an essay about John to the inaugural, Golf Digest US Open Challenge Contest this past winter. The contest was designed to select an amateur golfer who would play on the grueling US Open course the week prior to the official US Open. Beutler shared the following about Atkinson in his essay: “You see, my best friend since sixth grade was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer last April. He has never smoked, and it’s just one of those life things. He is a wonderful father, husband, friend and son. Last summer he had a double treatment of chemo and walked 18 holes the next day – and shot a 76. He’s a 5-handicap. The statistics aren’t on his side, but, like John says, they have never done a study of 100 John Atkinsons.” Beutler wrote it and sent it off to Golf Digest. John also saw the contest in the magazine. He thought of it as an opportunity to really bring lung cancer awareness to the forefront and to focus on his life in the future, not just day by day. After compiling an essay with the help of his wife Lori and brother Kevin (of the WHS class of 1990), John too sent in his entry. That essay Westside Alumni Association beat out over 56, 373 other entries in the contest. It left John standing as one of the five amateur golfing finalists who would walk the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego with the likes of Dallas Cowboy Quarterback Tony Romo, pop singer Justin Timberlake, and “Today” coanchor Matt Lauer. Word of John’s desire to win the on-line contest spread throughout his family, friends, neighborhood, classmates, and many WHS alumni members. On-line voting during April of this year finally determined which of the five amateur golfers would be positioned to play with the celebrities. When all the votes were cast, John had over 42% of them in his favor. He had slammed it. And on June 6th, John stepped foot onto the unforgiving US Open Course and attempted to break 100. The round was played under tight USGA rules, and each player counted every stroke. By all accounts, Atkinson was the crowd favorite. Kevin Sladovnik, also of ‘87, cheered on Atkinson in person on the greens because he “wouldn’t have missed this for the world.” John’s children Machaela, Andrea, and Christopher surprised him on the 15th hole, waving signs to route on their favorite golfer. John’s brother Kevin, a golf course architect, also surprised him as a caddie for the last hole of the day. Atkinson later told reporters that “….just like life, you have to finish strong.” Having his brother at his side, his family surrounding him, and his Nebraska cheering gallery pumping him on, helped create lasting memories for all. In an on-line video that can still be found on golfdigest.com, Atkinson shares that “What has become important to me now wasn’t important to me last year.” John has been a Warrior in the true sense of the word – a Warrior who works John Atkinson, ‘87, is teeing off at the Golf Digest US Open Challenge Contest this past June. Justin Timberlake watches in the background. to “give hope and inspire people who face life threatening illnesses so they can continue to live… That is what I’m doing.” He has been an advocate for the Lung Cancer Alliance (www.lungcanceralliance.org) and has been raising money for lung cancer research. As John says, “There’s always the next hole… Try not to focus on what is behind you. You worry about what is in front of you.” You continue to make Westside proud, John. You can learn more about John’s life with lung cancer by visiting his blog at www.livingwithstage4.blogspot.com Inside this issue Westside Scholarships Awarded to Four Seniors Check out where four of WHS’s best and brightest are headed. This is a very busy time of year for us. We are putting the final preparations together for the Annual Homecoming Tailgate Party scheduled in October and the Alumni Basketball Tournament in November. For more information, please keep reading this edition of the “W”. As many of you are aware, Dr. Ken Bird retired last school year. If you recall, Dr. Bird graduated from WHS in 1966 – and while we were sad to see him go, we are happy to announce that District 66 has a new superintendent – and she, too, is a WHS graduate from 1968. On behalf of the entire Alumni Association, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Jacquie (Adler) Estee into her new role. Jacquie began her career with the District back in 1972 and has been going strong ever since. Congratulations, Jacquie! This past summer, I had the pleasure of being a co-chair for my 20 year reunion and I wanted to pass along a very important piece of information that I learned from this experience: PLEASE DON’T BE FOOLED BY IMITATIONS There are a few “for-profit” alumni association websites out there that are presenting themselves as if they are the Westside High School Alumni Association. Unfortunately, many of our alumni have mistaken these web sites for the official WHS Alumni Association. Please don’t let this happen to you. These websites will have very fine print at the bottom of their home pages stating they are not associated with Westside High School or the school district, but the print requesting a membership fee is very prominent. Westside Alumni Association does not charge its members to belong – and never has! Our membership is based on the common privilege of having had a great educational experience and crossing the Westside graduation stage. Also, only OUR website has current information on reunions, district events, and alumni activities. So please, when looking for WHS Alumni Information, look no further than www.westsidealumni.org. Westside Alumni Association Picture above from left to right: Lauren Kirschman, Lauren Tracy and Lisa Dworak. Pictured to the right: Ben Nachman Each year, the Westside Alumni Association awards four $1000 scholarships. Two “Spirit of Service” Scholarships are awarded to seniors who have demonstrated the highest level of serving the Omaha community or the State of Nebraska, representing Westside Community Schools in a true spirit of volunteerism, and achieving exemplary community service records. Lauren Kirschman, daughter of Kory and Pam Kirschman, received one of the Spirit of Service scholarships. Lauren plans to study in the Engineering School at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, where she will pursue studies in Biological Systems. Lisa Dworak was granted the other Spirit of Service award. Lisa is the daughter of Gus and Carol Dworak. Lisa will be attending Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Truman has a liberal arts core curriculum, and Lisa’s interests are leaning toward History at this time. The Association also awards two “Unlocking Answers” Scholarships, which recognize our seniors who have demonstrated the highest level of academic achievement in the fields of Science, Math, or Engineering. 2 Ben Nachman, is one of our winners of the Unlocking Answers scholarship. Ben is the son of Beth Staenberg and Gary Nachman of Omaha. He plans to attend Cornell in the fall to pursue his passion for physics. We are sure he will make Westside proud. Finally, Laura Tracey received the other Unlocking Answers Scholarship. Laura excelled in the science, math, and engineering programs at Westside, and she plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this fall. She is undecided in her major at this time, but with her solid preparation at Westside, she is positioned to follow a number of paths. Laura’s parents are Stanley and Joan Tracey.
