November 2015 - Belted Galloway Society
November 2015 US Beltie New Newss Leanne Fogle — US Beltie News It’s been a busy fall at the offices of the Belted Galloway Society! As I write this, we are gearing up for the National Show and Sale in Louisville, Kentucky and there has been a flurry of work preparing for it. President Michelle Ogle represented the Society at the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts. Michelle was awarded the Richard Anderson Award for her dedication and contributions to the Belted Galloway breed by Mike Allen, manager at Anderson Hill Farm in Vermont. Vic and I attended World Beef Expo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in late September. Vice-president, Greg Hipple is on the WBE’s board of directors, and in addition to working at the event, he showed cattle there too. Later that week, Vic flew to Reno, Nevada and spoke at the Western Belted Galloway Association’s fall meeting. Past President Jon and Sylvia Bednarski packed their camper and headed to Maine in early October and Jon represented the Society at the Fryeburg Fair Belted Galloway show. We cannot thank Michelle Ogle and Jon Bednarski enough for the support they give us! Working with their committee, Have we mentioned that Michelle and Jon are busy professionals? Many of the projects they do on behalf of the Society are in the evenings and early mornings before their actual day jobs begin. Strong leaders do make strong organizations! Their devotion to the breed ensures that the Annual Meeting, the National Shows and the Premium Sale are top-notch! Michelle and Jon are working toward the design of a new breed brochure that will be made available in late November. Please join me and thank them both for their contributions to the Belted Galloway breed. In the Midwest, breeders have also been on the road showing and manning exhibits featuring Belted Galloway cattle. Junior members in the corn belt states have showed their cattle at state fairs in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. The North Polk FFA Chapter in Iowa displayed a Belted Galloway steer owned by Hunter Daggett in the Avenue of Breeds at the Iowa State Fair. 2016 will mark the 20th anniversary of Belted Galloway cattle exhibited in the Avenue of Breeds. Thank you to our Iowa breeders, Bob and Bethene Boardman, Bit of Bliss of Peru, Iowa, provided support to this exhibit. Jill Messmer, Messmer-Izing Farms, Rock Springs, Wisconsin provided an educational exhibit featuring a cow/ calf pair at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee. Jill wrote to us that the public’s interest in healthy alternative food choices from local food sources continues to grow. And although people would like to purchase Beltie meat from their local grocery store, they certainly understand that our small breed cannot supply the volume. Jill states that more and more continued page 3 NOVEMBER 2015 PAGE 2 The Big E — Springfield, Massachusetts Junior Show 2015 Big E Bluebird Ranch (TX), Driftwood Plantation (SC), Flanders Farm (NH), Forrest Farm (MA), Harmony Meadows (RI), HC Sims Farms (KY), Holbrook Hill Farm (NH), JAW Cattle (KY), Moonshadow Farm (ME), Oatley’s Farm (RI), Partridge Meadow Farm (NH), Meadowood Farms LLC (NY), Rota-Spring Farm (MA), Spring Fed Belties (CT), Summer Hill Farm (NY), Vaca Linda Belties (TX). Terry and Karlyn Etheridge, TEK Cattle, Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Vic and Joyce Eggleston, Hav-A-Belt Galloways, New Glarus, Wisconsin showcased a cow/ calf pair in the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Beef Tent during the 2015 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. The cow/calf pair drew the attention of many visitors interested in the Belted Galloway breed. The event was attended by 45,000 visitors and the cattle appeared in the Agri-View newspaper. Bred by Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine (MA). Owned by Oatley’s Farm (RI). During 2015, we have had a few members communicate that scammers contacted them because they used social media and beltie.org when advertising their cattle. We certainly want our membership to continue to use every marketing opportunity to sell or promote their cattle. However, we are encouraging our membership to take precautions. A recent scam that was brought to our attention was for cattle purchased through photography and video. The buyer asked the seller to accept payment that included the shipping fees with the payment for the purchased cattle. The scammer asked the seller to wire money to a shipping company on their behalf. On the day the check was to be deposited at the seller’s bank, the scammer requested that the shipping expenses be wired. The cattle were also scheduled to be picked up on the same day the money was deposited and transferred. Luckily, the seller caught on to the scam before any fees were transferred. Generally, the scenario continues with the shipping company that was “hired” to transport the purchased cattle never shows up at the farm. The bank later calls the seller to inform him that the check for the purchased cattle bounced and the scammer is known to pocket the fees that were wired for cattle shipping. We should have data available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his semen checked for quantity and motility, and uniform scrotal development ( two normal sized testicles). Any data available should appear in your advertisement along with his birth date and the names of his sire and dam.
