Fritz Lang. He was regarded a genius, an egocentric sex maniac and a sadist.
Violence and love became subjects that would not let go of Fritz Lang for the rest of his life. In Vienna, as the son of
a violent father, under whom his much-loved Jewish mother suffered. As a soldier in Galicia, where he experienced
the horrors of the First World War. And finally as a young director in Berlin, accused of murdering his own wife.
Fritz Lang researches the "Evil" in all of us and in himself.

HITLER’S HOLLYWOOD
DCP & HD – 2016 – Germany – 100 & 2x52’
Delivery: SUMMER 2016
Directed by: Rüdiger Suchsland
Original Language: German
Produced by: LOOKS Filmproduktionen GmbH in
collaboration with The Murnau-Foundation, Arte/ZDF and
funded by Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg and Hessische
Filmförderung.
Hitler’s Hollywood tells the story of one of the most important and dramatic period in the German
cinema history.
Once again, what does cinema know that we don’t know?
The Third Reich cinema was a heavily censored industry and at the same time, longed to be a German dream
factory. It produced, among others, the Nazi blockbuster "Münchhausen", at the request of Joseph Goebbels. It
established its own celebrity star system and used the latest marketing tools.
About 1000 feature films were produced in Germany between 1933 and 1945 and only a few were openly Nazi
propaganda films and even fewer could be considered harmless entertainment.
We look at these films and the people behind them. How stereotypes of the “enemy” and values of love and hate
managed to be planted, into the viewers’ minds, through the screens.
THE SECOND CHAPTER AFTER FROM CALIGARI TO HITLER!

Laura Viezolli met Angelo Santagostino for the first time in July 2013 when he was already seriously ill with ALS. A
man trapped in his own body except his moving eyes, so intelligent, lively and eager to communicate. Letter by
letter, time after time, with the fundamental help of the eye-pointer translating their movements, he sharpened and
transmitted his thoughts to his loved ones.
Up until June 2014, Angelo answered questions and allowed us an emotional immersion towards his own mortality.
In those precious moments, through a whole year of meetings and conversations between the young female
filmmaker and the main protagonist, we explore the vibrant mobility of the brain with a hypnotic visual style.

Spanning the period from the outbreak of the Egyptian revolution in 2011 until the ouster or ex-President Morsi
three years later, Whose Country? is a first-person account of one Cairo-based filmmaker’s interactions with an
Egyptian policeman, Abou H, who experienced the brutality and the violence of his superiors towards the civilians
just after the revolution- the kind of security personnel who had become notorious in Egypt for widespread
corruption and abuses of civilians.
Through verité footage and in one-on-one interviews, Abou H reveal the ways in which the security forces abused
his role in society. Abou is torn between his convictions and the risk to lose his job. He hopes to change the system,
speaking directly to the director, who at the same time, grapples with issues of guilt and morality and the memory of
his father, a former criminal investigator.

Directed by Johan Grimonprez and based on Andrew Feinstein's globally acclaimed book The Shadow World:
Inside the Global Arms Trade, the film SHADOW WORLD reveals how the international trade in weapons - with
the complicity of governments and intelligence agencies, investigative and prosecutorial bodies, weapons
manufacturers, dealers and agents - fosters corruption, determines economic and foreign policies, undermines
democracy and creates widespread suffering. SHADOW WORLD posits alternative perspectives through the
experience of a peace activist and war correspondent, as well as through the provocative stories of Eduardo
Galeano; but ultimately the film reveals the real costs of war, the way the arms trade drives it, how the weapons of
war are now being turned against the citizens of liberal democracies, and how the 'shadow world' is taking over. In
shedding light on how our realities are being constructed, the film offers a way for audiences to see through this
horror, in the hopes of creating a better future.

THE LOOK OF SILENCE and THE ACT OF KILLING
THOSE WHO JUMP, ultimately a film about making a Film, is Abou's portrayal of the human struggle for
dignity and freedom on one of the World's most militarized frontiers.
In northern Morocco, lies the Spanish enclave of Melilla: Europe on African Land. On the mountain above, live over
a thousand hopeful African migrants, watching the fence separating Morocco and Spain. Abou from Mali is one of
them – the protagonist in front of the camera, as well as the person behind it. For over a year, he has ceaselessly
attempted to jump the fence.
At the fence, they have to overcome the razor-wire, automatic pepper spray and brutal authorities. After every failed
attempt, they return to Mount Gurugú, scouring for food in the nearby villages, trying to uphold some sort of order in
the camp and building up their confidence again. Some give up and return home, others never return.
Through the lens, Abou gradually finds expression and meaning in his situation. "When filming I feel that I exist".
But after 16 months on the mountain, Abou is close to a tragic accident. Returning to Mali is not an option for him
and he becomes more determined than ever to pursue his dream of a better life in Europe.

Oda Jaune paints mutilated and disfigured, naked and sexless bodies. Disturbing paintings, painful paintings. And
she paints faces radiating happiness, people in paradise, people who can fly. Tender, touching paintings.
Originally from Bulgaria, Oda Jaune studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, becomes a master scholar of Jörg
Immendorff and she becomes his wife. After Immendorff’s death in 2007, she leaves Germany to move to Paris.
Getting in touch with her there is a challenge. Almost two years pass before she agrees to being in this film. The
plan seems simple: over the course of several weeks the director and her cinematographer will join her in the studio
and capture the process of creating new paintings for an upcoming exhibition.

Directed by Christy Garland
Original language Finnish &
English
Produced by Napafilms
Miia, the ambitious coach of Finland’s worst competitive cheerleading team, is sick of losing and stuck in
Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle. So she takes a trip to the motherland, Texas, where she’s inspired by the American
mindset and focus of the world’s best cheerleaders. Returning to Finland a tougher coach, she pushes her girls to
the breaking point… but is that what the team really wants?
For Aino and Patricia, the team’s success is the least of their concerns as they struggle to fight painful battles in
their teenage lives. For them, the cheerleaders are like another family, a stepping stone and a source of support
along the path of life. Miia thinks a winning team is all she needs, until life steps in and surprises her.
Cheer Up takes us into the teenage lives of a team of losing cheerleaders who try their best to get better and look
perfect doing it, while really, life just sucks. For Patricia, Aino and Miia, finding out who they are, where they
belong and what family means is much more important than any trophy.

PORNO E LIBERTÁ
"A free and civilised society should be judged by
its willingness to accept porn."
Salman Rushdie
DCP – HD – 2015 – Italy - 78 min
Directed by Carmine Amoroso
Written by Carmine Amoroso
Produced by Zut Film
PORNO E LIBERTA is the first documentary giving an insight
on the Italian 70’s and tracing porn’s incredible genesis from
the first magazines, photoshoots, censorship issues to its
political and social repercussions — such as the election of
Porn-star Ilona Staller (Cicciolina), the first to become
parliament’s member.
It also offers food for thought about the 70’s & 80’s periods,
years of transformations in which, pornography became a
tool of protest and liberation, a real language.
The documentary brings to light a wide range of exclusive
materials and interviews – pornographers, porn stars, writers,
intellectuals, philosophers and feminists, from Lasse Braun to
Riccardo Schicchi, from Marco Pannella to Ilona Staller, from
Helena Velena to Judith Malina – who recall and recount
what deserves to be defined as the most important sexual

ALL THINGS ARE PHOTOGRAPHABLE
DCP & HD – 2017 – USA - 75 & 52 min
Directed by: Sasha Waters Freyer
Original language: English
Produced by: Pieshake Pictures LLC
All Things Are Photographable is the first
documentary film on the life and work of acclaimed
photographer Garry Winogrand (1928-1984) –
the epic storyteller of America across three
turbulent decades.
Photo Copyright John F. Kennedy, Democratic National Convention, Los Angeles, 1960
His artistry encompassed the heartbreak, violence, hope and turmoil of postwar America, from the frenzy of its
urban core to the alienation of its emergent suburbs. Thirty years on, his most well-known photos – of
Marilyn Monroe, her skirt blown askew on the set of The Seven Year Itch; Norman Mailer’s 50th birthday party;
tourists at Dealy Plaza in Dallas following the Kennedy assassination and among hundreds of others –
remain unforgettable. He also captured city streets teeming with women newly liberated from the repressive
1950’s; rowdy Texas rodeos, political conventions and angry protests, zoos, parades and celebrity balls.
His camera seized upon the spectacle of a massive social upheaval – that age when our now-global mania for selfpromotion and exhibitionism was beginning.

HAROLD AND LILLIAN: A HOLLYWOOD LOVE STORY is a fascinating and humanistic account of the romantic
and creative partnership of storyboard artist Harold Michelson and his wife, film researcher Lillian Michelson—a
talented couple once considered “the heart of Hollywood.” Harold and Lillian worked on hundreds of iconic films
during Hollywood’s golden age including The Ten Commandments, The Apartment, The Birds, Who’s Afraid of
Virginia Woolf? The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby, Fiddler On the Roof, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Scarface, Full
Metal Jacket and more. Although the couple was responsible for some of Hollywood’s most iconic examples of
visual storytelling, their contributions remain largely uncredited. Through an engaging mix of love letters, film clips
and candid conversations with Harold and Lillian, Danny, DeVito, Mel Brooks, Francis Coppola and others, this
deeply moving documentary chronicles their remarkable relationship and two extraordinary careers spanning six
decades of movie-making history.

SOMETHING’S GONNA LIVE
An intimate portrait of six Grandmasters from the
Golden Age of Hollywood
DCP- HD- 2016- USA – 78’
The Los Angeles Times Critics’ Pick SOMETHING'S GONNA LIVE is an intimate portrait of life, death, friendship
and the movies, as recalled by some of Hollywood's greatest cinema artists.
The film captures the late life coming together of renowned production designers Robert Boyle (North by
Northwest, The Birds), Henry Bumstead (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting) and Albert Nozaki (The War of the
Worlds, The Ten Commandments), storyboard artist and production designer Harold Michelson (The Graduate,
Star Trek: The Motion Picture), and master cinematographers Haskell Wexler (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,
Medium Cool) and Conrad Hall (In Cold Blood, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). These prolific artists have
worked on a total of 400 films, garnering 25 Academy Award® nominations and 8 wins.
From snapshots, sketches, and vintage footage interwoven with interviews and contemporary footage of these
artists visiting former studios and locations, we get a behind-the-scenes look at moviemaking in the golden age of
cinema. As we watch iconic scenes of our collective imaginations emerge from their drawings, models, matte
paintings, and sets, we hear tales of Mae West, "Hitch," and DeMille, and experience their longing for the sense of
community that made working on these films so great.
Not a nostalgia piece, but an exploration of the artist's moral obligation to truthfully portray the human condition,
SOMETHING'S GONNA LIVE is a thought-provoking and "deeply moving" (LA Times) celebration of the human
stories behind the glamorous edifice of Hollywood.
“A revelation! ... An eye-opening tribute to one of the least understood or appreciated aspects of
filmmaking, and a challenge to filmmakers to believe in what they do!”

THE MAN ON LINCOLN’S NOSE
DCP – HD - 2001 – USA- 40’
Production design has always been a key part of the
Hollywood filmmaking process, but until recently the field
received very little critical attention. But thanks to Daniel
Raim’s lucid and concise Oscar nominated documentary
about Robert Boyle, one of Hollywood’s best art directors, a
general audience now has a chance to savour what these
masters of their craft have contributed.
Boyle tells stories about working on everything from
Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest,” “The Birds” and “Marnie”
to “Fiddler on the Roof.” Boyle is quite eloquent and witty in
explaining his craft, and others, including fellow art director
Henry Bumstead, are also interviewed.
Raim has done an imaginative job of editing production
storyboards and sketches with photographs and film
segments so that we ‘get’ what the production designer
actually does. The detailed segment on constructing Mt.
Rushmore in the studio (thus the film’s title!) is fascinating,
as we learn more about how actual photos of a location can
be skilfully blended with a constructed set.
A special highlight is Raim’s coverage of “The Birds,” in which Raim has Boyle revisit the actual location as film
footage from Hitchcock’s memorable film is intercut with continuity sketches drawn for Boyle by his draftsman,
Harold Michelson. We see a black-and-white line drawing of Tippi Hedren with a bird attacking her, which then
becomes that actual shot in the film.
Raim’s film is a welcome gift to everyone anywhere who wants to know more about what has and continues to
make Hollywood.

MAN FALLING
Falling apart in a blink of an eye
Awakening with passion.
DCP - HD – 2015 – 105 min – Denmark
Directed by: Anne Wivel
Original Language: Danish
Produced by: Danish Documentary Production (Sigrid Dyekjær)
A brain injury after a fall forces Per Kirkeby - one of Denmark's most famous artists - to stop painting. In an instant,
Kirkeby loses his life's foundation as well as his ability to work. No longer able to see colors, he cannot orient
himself in the large canvases that made him a figurehead for Danish and international contemporary art.
"Man Falling" is the story about Per Kirkeby’ s universe - marked by deep melancholy as well as astounding beauty;
a story about a personal struggle for life and work, a return to the universal language of painting that has been his
way to get his visual and emotional impulses out. Per Kirkeby is one of Denmark's greatest and most famous
painters worldwide. He has an unusual and extremely rare linguistic gift.
The film contains a continuous series of registrations and reflections on what human life means; a passion for
leaving a mark and being present until the end.

ELISABETH VIGEE LE BRUN: A Touch of
Grace
“Painting and living have always been one and
the same thing for me”
Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun
DCP - HD – 2015 – 90 min – France
Directed by Arnaud Xainte
Original Language French
Produced by Illégitime Défense
« Between two centuries as at the confluence of two rivers». These words of
Chateaubriand seem to be written for Louise-Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
Born in 1755 and died in 1842, Louise-Elisabeth lived numerous and various periods
of time, thanks to her exceptional longevity.
Official painter of Marie Antoinette, whose portrait she painted 30 times, she knew
eight political systems, two revolutions, painted more than 660 portrayals, and
received in her salon the whole political and artistic intelligentsia of the late 18th
century until 1840.
She fled the revolution in October 1789, for a 13-year long exile, going through Italia,
Russia, Austria, England, and Switzerland. Everywhere, she was received by all the
greatest courts of Europe and, besides posterity, was paid the highest fees of her
time.
The freedom of Louise Elisabeth, nonetheless an 18th century woman, echoes
strongly with today’s women struggle, being the first French female painter to be
recognized around the world.

The embodiment of the character by fiction appeared to us as the right choice
obviously.
Interviews of speakers are mixed with fictional scenes. These moments are an
evocation of times and places when and where Louise Elisabeth lived, enlightening
personal and historical events.
In order to make the spectators feel the modernity of this character, the director used
also some special effects: we zoom into the canvas so that we understand in a better
way the meaning and the structure; engravings are animated; matte paintings remind
us the poetry of the artist’s travels; several sequences mix fiction and painting.
EVL used fresh & bright colors and always painted her models in a graceful way,
contrasting with the heavy settings usually employed at the time and the film pays
homage to her unusual technique at the time.

And the story of their tremendous love of tango.
María Nieves Rego (80) and Juan Carlos Copes (83) met when they were 14 and 17, and they danced together for
nearly fifty years. In all those years they loved and hated each other and went through several painful separations
but always got back together. No other man danced like Juan and no other woman danced like María!
Eventually, he left her for good for a woman 20 years younger with whom he fathered two children.
Now, Juan and María are willing to open up about their love, their hatred, and their passion.

En El fin del Mundo)
A journey through Galicia’s nouvelle cuisine
DCP - HD – 2015 - 90 min – Spain
Directed by Alberto Baamonde Bello
Produced by Esmerarte Servicios Artisticos
Original Language Spanish
In 2003, nine young chefs joined their forces and their knowledge to transform the
cuisine of their land: in Galicia, Grupo Nove was born.
Culinary revolution already emerged in other Spanish regions but Galicia remained
known for its excellent products, not for its cooking techniques or for its chefs’ talent.
Something had to change!
Along with a new generation of producers and farmers, the Grupo Nove developed
an idea of gastronomy grounded in traditions, attached to the land and the product,
though using radically new techniques.
Grupo Nove is now composed of twenty chefs, the veterans training the new
generation. In a short period of time, Galicia multiplied its international recognition: 8
Michelin stars, 19 Repsol soles earned by names such as Pepe Solla, Xosé Cannas,
Yayo Daporta, Beatriz Sotelo, Javier Olleros…

(Magnum agency), goes to Israel and Palestine.
DCP & HD – 2015 – Czech Republic & Germany - 72 min - COMPLETED
Directed by
Original language English, Hebrew
Produced by Nowhere Films & Produkce Radim Prochazka
The film follows Koudelka and his journey photographing the Holy Land from one enigmatic and visually
spectacular location to the next. In each location - soon to become a new “Koudelka” photo - a new scene unfolds,
gradually introducing us to Koudelka’s method of working and his perception of the world he is documenting as
well as the people he encounters.
A fascinating dialogue emerges between the moving images Baram creates and Koudelka’s still photographs, as
Baram places the photographer in his own breathtaking compositions. Austere images of landscape divided by
concrete walls and barbed wire reveal the horrifying absurdity of the infamous conflict.
Baram’s long-term documentation of the photographer on-field together with the exclusive use of Koudelka’s
photographic archive result in a unique record that offers a rich and intimate look into the solitary creative process
of one of photography’s greatest living masters.

Produced by: Fontana Film GmbH
Synopsis: The “Sagrada Família” in Barcelona is a unique and fascinating building.
It is the brainchild of the architect Antoni Gaudí, a once controversial genius, and the
work of an army of laborers. The edifice has a history with many highs and lows and
raises a multitude of questions.
We normally experience a cathedral or church in its finished form, as the witness of
a period long gone. By contrast, the construction of the Sagrada Família is anything
but complete. We can see with our own eyes how the edifice is growing and
evolving, even today, as it has done for the past 130 years.
SAGRADA is a film about the mysterious process of artistic creation, revolving
around the question of our human creative power and how we want to use it.

Produced by LES FILMS DU TAMARIN
Synopsis: The documentary attempts to retrace the major political and industrial aesthetic
phases of Vietnamese cinema, through its wars, regime changes, ideological

questions:
What relationship creators maintain with the central government? What is the freedom of

cinema to a private cinema, therefore being subject to the rules of profitability? How to
adapt to widespread globalization, whose effects are felt in the Vietnamese cinemas with
the dominant influx of Hollywood movies "blockbusters’’, leaving small room for
Vietnamese movies?
What are the demands of the public, especially young people since they are a large
majority in Vietnam?
How the situation did gradually increase from films about nostalgia that magnify national
hero to the exploration of dramas or individual expressions?
What movies do they reflect today Vietnamese life when once they reflect the instructions
of the power or the image of the company that wanted to convey?

Return to Manila – Filipino Cinema
2011 – France – 60min
Directed by Hubert Niogret
Original language: English
In the mid-seventies, Lino Broka’s social melodrama Insiang, shot in the shanty-towns of
Manila, came as a revelation in Cannes because of what it told us about a country with a
long history of which we knew nothing, because we discovered an obviously gifted
director. During the next ten years, in Paris and at various festivals, we saw remarkable
films by other Philippine directors (Ishmael Bernal, Mario O’Hara, Mike De Leon, Marilou
Diaz Abaya, Pepe Gallaga…) and by a few ‘old-timers” as well, discovered thanks to the
private collections of Lino Broka and Agustin Sotto (Gerardo de Leon, Manuel Conde,
Lamberto Avellana, from the fifties, and Eddie Romero, who is still working in the 90’s). In
1991, Lino Broka was killed in a car crash. And the Philippines again disappeared from the
movie agenda in the West… and yet the country continued producing numerous films and
very interesting new directors appeared: Tikoy Aguiliz, Lav Diaz, Jeffrey Jeturian, Laurice
Guillen…
At the end of the nineties a new generation of film-makers appeared, and since 2005, still
more new directors have emerged. At the same time, digital technology came to the
Philippines. Do there is good reason return to Manila and examine the current state of
Philippine production with special attention to the films of newcomers like Brillante
Mendoza (Serbis, Lola), Raymond Red and others, as well as recent work by directors of
the previous generation, still in activity.

Indian Cinemas (Les Cinémas indiens, du nord au sud)
DIGITAL - 2008 – France – 3 x 55 min
Directed by Hubert Niogret
Original language: English
Produced by LES FILMS DU TAMARIN
Synopsis :
1 Bengali cinema
Bengali cinema was not the earliest regional film-industry to develop in India. Most of their
films deal with questions related to their cultural identity and are shot in the Bengali
language. At times, however, like their elders before them, they will opt for the use of Hindi
in their large-scale productions, hoping to reach a wider audience. The bulk of the rest of
Bengali cinema comprises auteur films with a social realist slant, and comedies.
2 Hindi cinema
Too often identified by Westerners with Bollywood, the Hindi cinema is much broader than
that name would imply. The commercial and industrial foundations of the modern Hindi
cinema were laid at the end of the forties and the beginning at the fifties, largely revolving
around widely loved stars. A new generation of film-makers has recently appeared.
3 Southern India cinema
In the Northeast and the South, cinema has a more artisanal character, in contrast with the
heavy industry of Mumbai. In the South, with different languages, state structures, political
functioning, notions as to the goals of film-making prevail in societies governed by
democratically elected communists and where authorities are determined to promote
progress through education. The Tamils, on the other hand, have carried on the Hindi
tradition of entertainment films, and Madras is the second largest production centre after
Mumbai. In these predominantly poor, rural areas, the industry developped later than the
Hindi cinema.

Marvel 14: Super heroes vs. censorship
HD –2012 – France, 26 & 52 min
Directed by: Jean Depelley, Philippe Roure
Original language: French
Produced by Metaluna Productions
Synopsis: “Marvel 14: super heroes vs. censorship” is a documentary that tells the tale
of issue 14 of French comic book Marvel, who was censored and banned before
publication. The Marvel comic books were at the time censored in France, being largely
redrawn and cut for content. Both the left wing (American comics supposedly were
symbols of the American imperialism) and the right wing (for the violent and immoral
content) put pressure on the editors, even with death threats, to stop the mag. Issue 14
was not never released, but a few copy may have survived and it became an urban
legend. The documentary also establishes the history of Marvel comics and widens to the
censorship situation in the late 60s in France.

Season 1
EPISODE 1
11th District Industrial Architecture
During this episode we will discover the industrial architecture in the 11th district of Paris, whose
evolution followed, overt time, and the evolution of material and building techniques.
The analyses of these buildings will allow us not only to understand a specific kind of architecture but
also the history of this laborer district and his work memory. We will show that the industrial heritage
leaved an important mark on the 11th but this trace isn’t at all frozen but it is something that lives
through the craftsmen who always work in the district and the inhabitants who engage to transform
ancient work places to residential buildings but always keeping the industrial aspect of the area.
EPISODE 2
The Bohemian spirit of the 18th district
In this episode we will discover the bohemian spirit which still reigns in the heart of the 18th district and
above all in Montmartre.
The architecture here, as his inhabitants and quarters, has an exceptional variety, with a melting pot of
times and architectural styles and it is impossible to collect everything in one single category. But there
are also enough buildings with a very particular style so that the heterogeneous character of the
quarter doesn’t give only a colorful impression, but make rather the effect of the district in its entirety,
real village where still live many artists.
EPISODE 3
Transformed factories – Ivry sur Seine – at Paris’doors
At Paris border, between the Seine’s banks and railways, the city of Ivry has seen the birth of a new
trend in the art of housing, with the transformation of huge abandoned industrial complex in small
condominium paradise.
Often hidden behind walls, arise exceptional homes that don 'have nothing to envy to Parisian chic.
EPISODE 4
The village spirit in the 20th district– Paris
The youngest district of Paris, the 20th changed itself from a rural tradition to urban habits, this making
a symbolic "village atmosphere."
So after one hundred and fifty years, renovation plans have followed and the destruction of unhealthy
buildings, slums, shacks has not stopped. People and organizations have struggled to prevent the
spread of large groups, and intertwining alleyways nestled in small bungalows with gardens, the
peculiarity of this district, have been preserved. These houses have yet eventually grow old. Now the
bet is to modernize the housing without sacrificing the architectural and urban color that makes the
charm of this district.
Season 2
EPISODE 1

of their city. This style represents the most famous image of Paris. In this episode, we will push the
door of several apartments to see how we play with the codes of this so "classic" style.
EPISODE 2
Architects Houses in Paris
You know Paris from Haussmann with its buildings and main avenues. Leaving the heart of the city to
the suburb, the urban landscape offers more diversity: neighborhoods are more intimate, bucolic and
some houses even become a setting.
If most of Parisian houses are part of the urban landscape for more than a century, architects are still
building today. However, vacant spaces are rare nowadays... Let’s visit those architectural
masterpieces.
EPISODE 3
Art nouveau in Paris in 1900
At the southern border of Paris, between the Seine and the railroads, Ivry-Sur-Seine city gave birth to
a new housing trend, with the transformation of huge industrial buildings in small condominium
paradises. Often private hideaways, those exceptional accommodations have nothing to envy to the
Parisian chic.

A Turning Tide in the Life of Men
Understanding people, understanding Europe
DCP – HD - 106 min – France & Ireland – 2015
Directed by: Loic Jourdain
Original language: English, Gaelic
Produced by: Idée Originale, Lugh Films and South Wind Blows
Filmed over eight years, A Turning Tide in the Life of Man follows John O’Brien, a
small-scale fisherman from the island of Inis Bó Finne, as he embarks on a journey to
save his community by navigating the corridors of Brussels and the intricacies of a
reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy reform.
The film is evidence of the threats faced by small-scale fishermen and coastal
communities throughout Europe today - the complexity of distant political decisionmaking and yet the impact of it on vulnerable communities. We accompany John, his
family and friends, and see how they cope with the stresses of years of meetings,
politicians promise, the anxiety of being away, but also gathering the support of
island communities across Europe and from environmental NGOs. We witness how
John, and the community, come to the realization that they are only a small piece of
a much larger puzzle in which the growing reality of overfishing, environmental
decline, and economic pressure all compete for solutions …

DCP – HD – 2012 –Syria – 120 min
Directed by Hala ALABDALLA
Original languages: Syrian
Produced by LES PRODUCTIONS DE L’OEIL SAUVAGE and RAMADFILM
Synopsis: During the two years of the production of the film – from the beginning of
the summer of 2010 to that of 2012 – major upheavals occurred in the Middle East,
especially in the two countries the film focuses on, Egypt and Syria.
It was hardly surprising that a film on the freedom of expression and its repression in
these countries should be drawn into the wake of the turbulent events of the
revolutions under way there…
By questioning Egyptian and Syrian cartoonists about their experiences before and
after these major historic movements against despotism, the film attempts to gauge the
new-found freedom that will also guarantee our future and our right of expression, and
preserve us from censorship.
The Syrian writer and journalist Samar Yazbek provides us with her insight and
impressions from Damascus in the months preceding the Syrian revolution up until her
exile in France five months later.

BIG FISH SMALL FISH
Understanding people, understanding Europe
DCP – HD - 52 min – France & Ireland – 2015

Champ of the Camp
HD – 2013 –United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon – 52 min
Directed by: Mahmoud Kaabour
Original language: Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Bhojpuri and English.
Produced by: Veritas Films
“Champ of the Camp” is the first ever feature-length documentary filmed in the
controversial labor camps of the United Arab Emirates. The film follows a massive
Bollywood singing and trivia competition that searches across more than 70 camps
throughout the country to find and crown the champ of all camps.
The film alternates between the x-factor style suspense of the competition and the
gritty reality of the labor environment, while weaving in intimate access scenes of their
daily routines and emotional reflections on their life as laborers in Dubai. Narrated (and
sung) entirely in the voices of the laborers, it paints a complete portrait of this vast and
isolated population of men who come to build the dream cities of the Arab world while
supporting their societies and economies back home.

Three Letters from China
DCP - HD – 2013 – Switzerland – 52min – Color
Directed by: Luc Schaedler
Original language: Chinese
Produced by : Go Between Films gmbh – Luc Schaedler I Josie Meier
Synopsis: Based on three different places, the film portrays the infractions to which
people living in modern day China are subjected due to rapid developments: in the
deceptively idyllic Jiuxiancun in the rainy south; in the apocalyptic coal mining site of
Minqin and Wusutu in the parched north; and in Chongqing, the megacity on the
Yangtze River. The protagonists give their moving accounts of an unresolved past, an
uncertain present and their tentative steps into the future. The film thus paints a
complex image of the mental state of the people in this complicated country.
“Watermarks” is a subjective snapshot in time that takes a poetic look at the changing
everyday life in China.

This ain’t California
HD – 2012 – Germany – 90 min – Color/ Black & white
Directed by Marten Persiel
Original language: German
Produced by Wildfremd Production GmbH,
Synopsis: A hymn to the subversive power of vitality, this fast-paced documentary
takes us on a trip through the strange unknown world of the ‘Rollbrettfahrer’ as
skateboarders were known in the GDR, a country where besides those loyal to the
regime, there was also an avowed political resistance. Apart from this, there was also a
movement of young rebels whose only raison d’être was the illusion of staying young,
immortal and non-committal. In THIS AIN’T CALIFORNIA three kids discover their love
of skateboarding on the cracked asphalt of the GDR – a madcap, even unacceptable
sport that was perhaps so incredibly exciting because of its nuttiness. This punk
fairytale created by a bunch of kids who luckily possessed sufficiently manic levels of
energy to record their lives on Super-8mm film, shows us life in the GDR life as it has
never been seen before. The film follows its three main protagonists from their
childhood in the seventies, through their turbulent teens in the eighties right up to that
autumn of 1989 when they were twenty and suddenly, everything they had known up to
that point was about to change forever.

Having survived a devastating hurricane, a death sentence, firing cannons, a bombing

also because the life she led – full of drama and grandeur – was greater than any role

Synopsis: Following nearly 40 years of unrelenting war – with every attendant horror –
peace and reconstruction are slowly arriving to Angola. Damaged first by the war for
independence from Portugal, Angola was then ripped apart by a devastating civil war
that orphaned thousands of children. Huambo, Angola’s second largest city, finds 55 of
these children in the Okutiuka orphanage under the care of Sonia Ferreira. Sonia’s
boyfriend, Wilker Flores, is a death metal guitarist who uses the brutal sounds and
rhythms of this hardcore music as a path to healing, or, as Sonia says, “to clear out the
debris from all these years of war.”
DEATH METAL ANGOLA tracks Wilker and Sonia’s dream – to stage Angola’s first-ever
national rock concert, bringing together members from different strands of the Angolan
hardcore scene from different provinces – as it unfolds in fits and starts against the
bombed out and mined backdrop of the formerly stately Huambo. Rubble and
deconstructed spaces provide scenic reminders of why hardcore music has gained a
foothold.

Directed by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb
Original Language: Persian
Produced by: JAFAR PANAHI & MOJTABA MIRTAHMASB
Synopsis: “Our problems are all our assets.”
Understanding this promising paradox helped us not to lose hope, and to be able to go
on since we believe wherever in the world that we live, we are going to face problems,
big or small. But it is our duty not to be defeated and to think of solutions.
The reality of being alive and the dream of keeping cinema alive motivated us to go
through the existing limitations in Iranian cinema.
The existing possibilities in cinema have convinced us that a filmmaker has only himself
to blame if he is unable to make films. The discerning nature of art not only paves the
way for the artist to overcome problems, but in the process of creativity, it turns every
limitation into a subject for work.
The unpleasant reality governing Iranian cinema and filmmakers today drove us to not
overlook this (perhaps transient) reality and to depict parts of it that were reflected in us.

Produced by: COALITION FILMS, CABULA6
Rubble and
deconstructed spaces provide scenic reminders of why hardcore music has gained a
foothold.

individual or collective shows. We discover their different visual and sound universes;
where the technicality and creativity have no limits. Scratch Music is a tribute to all these
singular artists.

Directed by Will Jewell
Original language: English
Featuring: Norman Cook, Beardyman, Buzz, Monkey Sons, Evil Ed and many more!
Synopsis: Think hip hop’s just about MTV videos, gangsta posing and bling? Think again –
this ain’t East Coast, this ain’t West Coast. This is South Coast! This character
documentary charts how hip hop has found a quintessentially English voice in the most
unlikely of locations – the south coast seaside towns.
South Coast seeks answers to questions such as why 30 years after hip hop arrived
there’s no global UK artists. Why teenagers ignore home grown hip hop in favour of violent
tales from 15000 miles away? And can you really rap about guns and bling when you’re
on the dole in Eastbourne?

Directed by Mika Kaurismäki
Original language: Portuguese
Synopsis: “Brasileirinho” is a 90 -min musical documentary film about Choro, the first
genuinely Brazilian urban music. Back in the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian
musicians started to blend European melodies, Afro - Brazilian rhythms and the
melancholic interpretation of the Brazilian Indians' music to create Choro. Choro is
credited as being the first musical expression of Brazil's melting pot and had a prominent
place in the development of Brazil's cultural identity. Choro remained a major popular
music style until the 1920s, leading directly into Samba and later to Bossa Nova. After a
slight decline in popularity, Choro music has made a remarkable comeback over the past
few decades.

Slow
A feature Documentary. A Wildlife Film.
A Cinematic Meditation.
DCP - HD - Germany - 2013 – 86 min
Directed by: Sascha Seifert
Original language: German
Produced by: Nicole Ackermann
Synopsis: Underneath bushes and hedges, along alleys and fields, in the woods
and on meadows, they roam around peacefully, in beauty, with dignity. Unimpressed
by the speed of life around them. Always careful but also constantly ready for stunts
beyond human sense of gravity. They glide, they climb, they dive, they enjoy. A
meditative journey into the mystical world of those marvelous creatures popularly
known - but yet ignored far too often - as snails and a beautiful & cinematic walking
meditation.
Slow depicts quite fittingly the life of snails. A peaceful slow documentary about life
in nature; the embodiment of slowness, far away from mechanical clocks which have
caused so much trouble that we now have to create events like Slow Art Day to
remind us that we’re moving too fast.
