Cultural highlights combined with a trip through magnificent landscapes along the Rhine and the Moselle, framed by the Westerwald, Hunsrück and Eifel mountain ranges. Variety is the key to experiencing the destination! Go back and immerse yourself in Roman times, the days of chivalry and the Romantic period and explore their masterly constructions: imposing town gates and amphitheatres, sturdy fortresses and fairytale palaces. You will find uniquely special treasures designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Discover the places where famous fairytales are said to have played out and enjoy unforgettable views of the Rhine valley. At the Deutsches Eck, Koblenz blossoms even after the National Garden Show and its historic buildings blend with the glorious floral displays in the gardens. Be inspired by renowned works of art and soothed by the peace of a noble monastery or feel the beat of a butterfly‘s wings in a magical tropical world. A bunker brings the political events of the Cold War to life and rare natural phenomena demonstrate an explosive world of volcanoes and geysers. And last but not least, an exciting hands-on experience sends you back on a special journey to Roman times. • Opened in 2007, this is a unique combination of 19th century station architecture with a light and airy new design by the star architect Richard Meier • Culture from three sides: the visual arts, classical music and literature • Exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and of masterpieces by a range of artists, from Cranach to Monet, loaned from the Rau Collection for UNICEF • Modern art collection with works by Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, one of the most significant artist couples of the 20th century This masterpiece offers: • outstanding food and drink in the museum restaurant housed in the ceremonial hall of the historic station building and on the terrace overlooking the Rhine to the Siebengebirge hills • a bar designed as a piece of art by Anton Henning (Interior no. 253, 2004) • Museum shop with art publications, jewellery, exclusive Arp wine and much more. Part of the site, which was 17.3 km in total, has remained intact. Visitors can take a 90-minute guided tour through the bunker and gain an impression of an underground world which until relatively recently was still strictly secret. Constructed from 1962 to 1971 in two former tunnels on an unfinished railway line strategically routed through the Ahr hills, the „Alternative Accommodation of the Constitutional Organs of the Federal Republic of Germany in a Period of Crisis and Wartime“ offered space for 3,000 people. Extensive documentation and many of the original artefacts in their original location provide information about a chapter of German history that at the time of the Cold War formed part of the mutual global deterrent of the atomic powers of the East and of the West. Immerse yourselves in the everyday life of the Romans at the UNESCO World Heritage Site „Frontiers of the Roman Empire (Limes)“. An experience for all the senses, the interactive open-air World of the Romans Museum offers multimedia displays and in-depth information about the Limes frontier in Rhineland-Palatinate and how it was created and reveals traces of the Romans to the present day. With interactive, hands-on exhibits, visitors discover how life at the frontier was lived. How heavy is chain mail? What do Roman handicrafts look like? What were the soldiers‘ living quarters like and what was their everyday routine?. Find out all this and more at RÖMERWELT. An attractive outdoor area, including soldiers‘ living quarters, a workshop, a herb garden and Roman bread ovens complement the displays. One of the highest in the world, the cold-water geyser in Andernach shoots 60 m up into the air. Similar to a mineral water bottle that is shaken and then opened, it is carbon dioxide from a magma chamber in this young volcanic area which causes the geyser to erupt. The expedition to the geyser is in three sections: The first stop is the visitor centre where you can find out all about this natural phenomenon. Interactive exhibits, experimental stations and media installations give you a whole new perception of this natural event. You then take a boat to the Namedyer Werth peninsula where the geyser is situated in a nature reserve. Anticipation rises until the majestic fountain shoots up into the air with much gurgling and hissing! It is a late-Baroque gem which has remained untouched by time. Over the last 15 years it has blossomed into new life thanks to the Villa Musica Rhineland Palatinate Foundation which has turned Engers Castle into a musical centre for the whole of the Rhineland-Palatinate region. However, the Castle offers a great deal more: • Museum and exhibition building • a registry office for the town of Neuwied in an outstandingly beautiful location • a perfect venue for weddings, uniquely wonderful celebrations and conferences Even in his day, Kaiser Wilhelm said that Sayn was fabulous. Its various attractions are seemingly contradictory in nature, but this variety promises an entertaining visit: the neo-Gothic castle and the formidable fortress, the romantic wedding chapel and the iron-built foundry, the Roman watchtower and the adventure high-ropes course, the idyllic parkland and the Romanesque abbey, the historic mill, the foundry museum and the butterfly garden. Dainty butterflies from far-off countries fly around a magical tropical world, fluttering from flower to flower just inches away from the visitors. Count Heinrich II of Laach founded the monastery on the lake in 1093. In 1156, Archbishop Hillin of Trier consecrated the church, which is considered an extremely important example of Romanesque building. The narthex was the final part of the church to be finished, around 1230. The Abbey is still home to over 50 monks who live their lives in accordance with the traditional rule of St. Benedict: „ora et labora“ - pray and work. There is more to see than just the Abbey church: the commercial enterprises are also worth a look and include a large plant nursery, a book and art shop, a hotel and trade and agricultural businesses. It is greatly admired for its beauty which it owes primarily to the lake which is home to the Laach whitefish and many other kinds of fish. The shallows by the banks are thickly populated with reeds and water lilies and provide a paradise for rare waterfowl. The best way to enjoy these idyllic surroundings is to take a boat on the lake or go for a walk around it (it is also known as the „blue eye of the Eifel“). There are various places in which visitors to Maria Laach can take some refreshment. A 20-minute film plays in several languages in the information area (opposite the bookshop) and offers some insight into life in the monastery. During opening hours, a monk from the Abbey is available to answer visitors‘ questions. In the years since the National Garden Show, the Electoral Palace, the pleasure gardens along the banks of the Rhine and the Moselle and the largely traffic-free and romantic historic city centre have bloomed with a new splendour. The spectacular cable car ride from Deutsches Eck up to one of the largest fortified castles in Europe is an unforgettable experience. Pure romance! Stolzenfels Castle which lies not far from Koblenz is considered an architectural jewel in the romantic Rhine crown. The summer residence of Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, it rises gracefully from the wooded slopes of the Rhine Valley opposite the mouth of the River Lahn. In 1823, Friedrich Wilhelm, who later became King of Prussia, was given the ruin of a mediaeval castle which had previously belonged to the Electorate of Trier. From 1836, his builder created the neo-Gothic castle from drawings by the famous Berlin-based architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The surrounding grounds, including the enchanting pergola garden, and a park landscaped by Peter Joseph Lenné, make the castle a complete work of art from the Romantic era. www.vulkanpark.com www.koblenz-touristik.de | www.diefestungehrenbreitstein.de www.schloss-stolzenfels.de | www.burgen-rlp.de This masterpiece offers: Enthralling and, in some cases dramatised, guided tours of the city, countless exhibitions and museums, youth hostel in the castle, large shopping malls, the spectacular Cultural Forum Confluentes with the Romanticum, a host of open-air events and festivals, a wine-growing town on five certified hiking trails and river boat trips on the Rhine and the Moselle. However, circumstances in and around the castle were never idyllic. High water and ice gnaw at the walls and the foundations and there is still no electricity nor any lavatories. The interior of the building bears testament to the austere life of the men who did their duty here. In 1327 only a massive defensive tower stood on the rock in the middle of the Rhine; no ships could pass unnoticed on this narrow section of the gorge at Bacharach. After a few years, the watch tower was enclosed by a wall with a single gate on the north side safeguarding access and it became Pfalzgrafenstein Castle. It secured the income for various feudal masters, which is probably why it was never destroyed and is only one of two castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site to survive intact to the present day (the other is Marksburg Castle). Trier – a centre of the ancient world Trier was once one of the five great metropolises of the ancient world. Even today, visitors to the town will encounter traces of this magnificent age wherever they turn. The Porta Nigra, Trier‘s landmark, was once part of its ancient fortifications. The amphitheatre, with its capacity for an audience of 18,000, reflects its glorious past, as do the Imperial baths, the baths at the Cattle Market (Viehmarkt) and the Barbara baths. www.burgen-rlp.de www.burgen-rlp.de Opening hours: Jan./ Febr. + Nov.: sat + sun 10 am - 5 pm March: 10 am - 5 pm April - Oct.: 10 am to 6 pm (wintertime until 5 pm) Closed first day of the week and in December.
