The streets of Benidorm will be a sea of green over the weekend; thousands of people visit the resort of
Benidorm to celebrate Ireland’s national day - St Patrick´s Day.
The celebrations will start on the Friday 14th when many visitors arrive, once the bags are dropped off at the
hotels then the party weekend will start. The annual event for Paddy’s Day is getting more and more popular
and is almost on the same scale as the November Fiestas.
St Patrick´s Day celebrations have been celebrated in Benidorm for many years becoming one of the most
popular places to visit for the event outside of the UK and Ireland. The big fiesta party will be most enjoyed at
some of the local Irish bars, the most popular is the beach front Guinness Bar, and just around the corner the
Bodhran Bar Av Dr Orts Llorca just off of the main beach front.

Hello readers, what a great week it has been simply
“shamazing” it was as soon as March hit us the
sun got warmer and the shorts, t-shirts and people
wearing very little were on the streets. A taste of
things to come of course and now this week is
probably one of the most exciting weeks of the
year. Why you might ask? Well for Sports it the one
of the biggest horse racing events from 11th - 14th
Cheltenham festival followed by the final show down
of the Six Nations with everything to play for we will
see the fight for the title on Saturday 15th back to
back action with all six teams with a point to prove
facing the prospect of being champions!!
With thousands of new arrivals on this week for
Fiestas and St Patricks Weekend, the word Weekend
is very important because Paddy’s Day has now
become so big all over the World that it’s not just on
the 17th that its celebrated, it is stretched out over the
weekend. So be prepared to get started on Friday 14th
and be in for the long haul of fun, right through
until the end of play on Monday 17th so for
most it will be early hours of the
18th…
To plan for the weekend we have
put together a centre page pull
out feature so you can see
what’s on and where. We
will see you around town all week
together with our photographer
getting loads of happy
snaps and looking for the
very best fancy dress so
look out for us!!
The sun is forecast to be shining, so everyone will be
out on the terraces and the Guinness will definitely
be flowing. Many of the bars will have live music all
day and be decorated to suit the theme with bunting,
balloons and much more. What will be interesting
is to see if there are any bars or restaurants that
actually take on the Irish culinary skills to provide
some traditional dishes?
Week long visitors will enjoy the famous
Cheltenham Races starting on 11th and together
with the grand finale of the Six Nations this weekend
when possibly France can beat or draw with Ireland
to help England take the title!
Many bars have special St Patrick offers for
Guinness and Jameson’s Whisky with Free hats and
T-Shirts promotions, ideal memorabilia to take back
home together with many sore heads making that

QUICK TIPS- Residency Status
CAR TRANSFER AND IMPORTATION
In our weekly article we are looking at all aspects of
life in Spain and the rules, regulations and best ways of
integrating into their system. This week we will look at
vehicles.
Due to the fact that in the UK it is only necessary to write
the name of the purchaser into the bottom of the log book
and post it off to the DVLA in Swansea- It is a common
misperception for foreigners to Spain to believe that
when they buy a car in Spain it will be sufficient to just
have a hand written “bill of sale” on the back of a napkin.
Unfortunately, like many bureaucratic processes in this
country- it is a lot more complicated than that.
When you buy a vehicle in Spain there is a standart transfer
tax payable to the traffic office to cover their administration
fees but there is also a purchase tax which is alculated on
the age, make, model, engine size and Co2 emissions of
the vehicle. The amount of tax payable per vehicle are all
listed in the equivalent of the “glasses guide” for Spain,
so the only reason the price would alter is due to the fees
charged by each Gestoria.
You can carry out the transfer yourself but it can be very
complicated and time consuming as you have to pay
in various different offices and get various documents
stamped and then queue at the traffic office in Alicante,
which when your average Gestoria charges less than 50€
for this service- it is usually not worth the petrol, parking,
two days of your time queing and employing the services
of a translator. We do advise in all cases, wether transfering
the ownership yourself in person or using a Gestoria that
when buying a road vehicle of any description it is wise to
have it checked for outstanding taxes or fines that may be
owed as the debts are inherited along with the vehicle. You
must also make sure that when you purchase the vehicle
you obtain a copy of the identification of the vendor as
withoiut their NIE number and other details, the vehicle
cannot be transfered.
When considering importing a car, you should note that
a car with foreign plates should be imported into Spain
within 6 months of the date of you becoming a resident of
Spain, if you are caught beyond that time the fine can be
in the region of 200€. Remember that your headlights will
need to be reset for driving on "the otehr side of the road".
The other factor which is important is that you must be
registered on the Town Hall "Padrón" (electoral roll) this will
provide proof of where your vehicle is "habitually resident in
Spain"- in some cases your title deeds will be sufficient.
We can discuss the "Padrón" its uses and requirements this
coming week.

Spanish drivers are the second worst in Europe according to research from
the French motoring foundation Vinci Autoroutes and the Europe-wide market
research firm IPSO which surveyed 7,000 people. 16% of those questioned
said that they feel that the Spaniards were the worst behind the wheel, but that
figure could not hold a candle on the winners, Italy, where a staggering 50% said
their drivers were most dangerous on the continent. Swedish drivers were seen
as the most responsible drivers, with 47% naming them as safest, follows by
the Germans, who got 26% and then the British with 13%. Spanish drivers are
more likely to use their horns in stressful situations – 67% of motorists in Spain
admitted to doing so, compared to the European average of 47%.

Top 5 fashion buys for
Spring/Summer 2014
There’s nothing like the arrival of new season clothes
in the shops to perk us up.
It’s always very tempting to run out and buy the first
spring looks you see, but to ensure you don’t end up
frittering away funds on random purchases, we’ve
done a bit of window shopping on your behalf.

It’s all you need for a great read.
Ringworm is a common fungal
infection of the skin. It has nothing
to do with worms as the name
suggests! The medical term for
ringworm of the body is Tinea
Corporalis. Tinea is a latin term that
means growing worm due to the
early belief that the infection was
caused by a worm.
There are other forms of Tinea which affect
various parts of the body such as Tinea capitis
(fungal infection of the scalp) or Tinea Pedis
which affects the feet
The typical appearance of Tinea corporalis
is a round red inflamed patch that spreads
outwards. The outer edge forms a scaly ring.
There may be one patch or several. However,
the appearance of the rash is not always
typical and your Doctor may need to take skin
scrapings for examination to confirm diagnosis.
The rash may cause only mild discomfort but
for some people may be very irritating and
itchy.

ringworm. If you suspect that your pet may be
infected, see a Vet before you start itching!!
Fungus also survives in soil and can live
on surfaces such as doors that have been
touched by an infected person.
Ringworm can be easily treated with antifungal
creams. Sometimes a steroid cream may also
be needed to control itching and inflammation
.Other forms of ringworm such as that of
the scalp normally require treatment with
antifungal tablets as cream alone may not
clear the infection.
Always check with a Doctor before using
antifungal preparations as some groups of
people such as those with existing illnesses or
taking certain medications that interact with
antifungals, should not use them.
If you have symptoms of Ringworm,
see your family Doctor.

“A typical characterful local Pub.”
Reviewed 9 March 2014
The only reason I’ve not reviewed the Drop Inn before
now is my late-in-life familiarity with the Web ! My
family and I have been regulars there for 12 years and
we are made to feel at home in the sun every visit.
Tony, Kate, Diane, Tommy, Maria and Ross accept you
as one of the family. Expats also make you welcome.
Prices are very good and quality of food and drink are
excellent. Great Sports coverage. We book our Hotel
on the basis of nearness to the Pub.Avoid being bored
by the shallowness of other Pub/Restaurants. Drop in
and you won’t regret it.

Stopped here several time in jan/feb and just had the
small portions as it was more than enough for me.
Liver and onions and roast dinners served everyday
and both were very tasty.
Good atmosphere and nice people.
“Best fresh cooked food in benidorm.”
Have been going to the drop inn for a few years now.
The food is freshly cooked for you and the staff are
very friendly too.nothing is to much for them to make
you feel welcome. Will be going back in july and hope
to see Ross & Margaret and the rest of the staff. By
the way the drink is cheap as well. From Sadie & Davy.
“Friendly place”
Reviewed 8 January 2014
We went to Benidorm over Christmas and went to the
Drop Inn most days for breakfast. The prices are very
reasonable and the food is great. The kitchen is clean
and the staff are very friendly and will do anything to
make you feel at home. Ross always made us laugh
and couldn’t do enough for us. All the staff worked
hard and we didn’t have to wait long for food even
though they were always busy.

“Really good spare-ribs!”
Reviewed 12 December 2013
Even of it is a bit cold in December, you can still eat
outside during the day. I visited the place twice during
this week, and have tried both the Argentinian beef
they serve; it was really good, but the spare-ribs were
better! The price was 13.75 Euros and it was really
worth it`s price. I recommend this place for meatlovers, but they have godd sandwiches and bocadillos
too. Try the place next time you are in Albir!

Visited the cafe bar which can be found in the main
street in El Albir.Nice relaxing terrace with friendly

The only comment i have as a negative was the size of
the glasses of wine which were very small.Otherwise
nice place to visit.

This is the best lounge bar cafe to go to in Albir by far.
Ran by a lovely couple and their staff are also great.
Friendly and super fast service. I go there most weeks
for coffee early in the morning when they’re busy and
the service is still fab .
They also serve the best make of coffee in the world
(in my opinion) Italian brand “illy”
Food also good they do a beautiful Caesar salad.
Mmmmmmm.

Been going to Albir for the last five years and we have
breakfast every day in The Universal. The coffee,
croissant and spanish toasted baguettes are the best

All the staff are really friendly and professional,
remembering what you like to eat and drink and enjoy
listening to your broken Spanish with patience!.
Wifi is available and they don’t mind you sitting there

“Excellent Indian Meal by far the best in Albir”
Reviewed 17 January 2014
Visited this Indian Restaurant with friends twice in
the last few days 12th Jan 2014 being our first visit
and again 3 days later this is by far the best Indian in
Albir. First of all it looks the business inside and the
staff are friendly and are very helpful. Our food was
first class, well presented and plenty of it. The menu is
extensive and if you want something different just ask
they are willing to accommodate your request if they
can. We all had different meals and each one looked
and tasted different which is a bonus these days. Just
do not take my word for it try it you will pleasantly be
surprised. Yes Indian meals always seem to be more
expensive these days but is also on par with the other
restaurants in Albir.
“Tasty, Value and Adequate, no-rush to go back”
We had a set €25 eat-as-much buffet and we got
good value with cava, beer and wine. Everything was
very tasty but apart from the onion bhajis nothing
wow’d me! Sauces, rice, naan were very nice but they
skimp on meat and vegetables a bit. The beef dish
was a little tough (so I suspect a cheaper cut was
used) and food temperature varied - I like my food hot.
The service was attentive and the staff very pleasant.
Just not sure the buffet suited us, i think we prefer to
be served and an al-a-carte menu but the buffet was
plentiful but limited choices. The two desserts on offer
were not to my liking, we would have preferred plain
ice cream. Red house wine was mediocre - we have
had better from the supermarket. Overall we enjoyed
the food but have no great desire to return for the
buffet or probably the restaurant again. For an extra
€5 we would recommend the El Boulevard nearer the
Albir beach.

was stolen with their child under 7 years of age asleep still inside.
The thief was apparently unaware of the child being inside the vehicle, and just
saw an opportunity to steal the vehicle, with the keys inside and the engine
running. The owners were alerted immediately as the hijacker being in a rush
spun the wheels causing loud screeching and a smell of burning rubber as the car
sped away from the scene fleeing toward Altea.
A local police patrol who were in the area, also heard the screech as the vehicle
departed and incredibly stopped the car just 200 metres from where it was taken.
The person arrested was a 35 year old male, believed to be of Serbian nationality,
he remains in custody pending confirmation of his identity, police have identified
two different records of whom he claims to be, one of which has criminal past.

A Hibs ladies football coach has died after
falling from the balcony of her fifth-floor
hotel room in Benidorm
Morgan Lynn, 25, was on holiday in
Benidorm with two female friends, and
had been out with them for the evening,
when the tragedy occurred. Local police
and the Foreign Office said Ms Lynn who
lives in Edinburgh, fell from her 5th floor
balcony at around 3am after she and her
companions returned to the Hotel Gala
Placidia where they were staying. Police
investigations are continuing into exactly
what led to the tragedy. Ms Lynn, originally
from Hawick, worked for the Royal Bank
of Scotland as an internal control officer.
Ms Lynn grew up in the Borders and went
to Hawick High School before studying at
Edinburgh’s Queen Margaret University,
where she graduated in 2009 with an
HND in Business Management. She was
involved with the Queen Margaret ladies
football team throughout her three years
at the university. She worked as a market
researcher for Ipsos Mori for two years
before joining RBS. Last year, she played
for Women’s Division Two football team
Musselburgh Windsor, but was not playing
this season due to injury. She had also
recently taken up horse riding again and
qualified to teach rock climbing. A Foreign
Office spokesman said: “We are providing

Las Fallas 15th – 19th March The
Fiesta of “San Jose”
For five days the castles, monuments and
“mascletaes” become the protagonists of
Benidorm, where the smell of gunpowder is
interspersed with the smell of flowers and the
music of the bands with the sound of masclets.
A transformation that occurs as a prelude to
spring, and on March 19th, everything ends and
everything begins; with the last of the ashes
people start to dream of Fallas again for the
following year. The festival of San José takes
place in Benidorm from the 15th to the19th
of March. Like the city of Valencia, Benidorm
honours San José with Las Fallas - a festival
of nightly street parties and rowdy fireworks.
Three giant papier-mâché statues (ninots) are
erected and then ceremoniously burned to the
ground on the final evening. The trio of statues,
known as Central Falla, Rincon Falla and Els
Tolls Falla, are constructed by - and placed in
- the different districts of Benidorm. The areas
try to outdo each other with their huge and
elaborate designs and often use the statues to
poke fun at local celebrities and politicians. The
Valencian fiesta is celebrated in Benidorm with
the erection of the Fallas and there is plenty to
enjoy with fireworks and concerts. The ninots
are burnt on the 19th and is the best part of the
festival.
Fallas Calendar
We have included a rundown of the Las Fallas
festivities below so you know where to be and
when!
Saturday 15th
“The Planta” – This is when the Fallas ninots
are lifted into designated positions these the
three big statues will stay here until they are
burnt on the last day. You can find them at The
Plaza Triangular, Rincon de Loix opposite Burger
King and Calle Tomas Ortuno in the Old Town
Sunday 16th
Along with parties through the weekend
Sunday draws to an end with a parade from
7.00pm after a “mass” church service will be
held in the San Jaime Church
Monday 17th
Starting at 10.30am in the Rincon de Loix,
a fantastic band will play music and dance
around the first ninot and then go on to parade
the streets, towards the other two statues where
they will do the same.
Tuesday 18th
Tuesday is the Flower offering, another
traditional part of the festival starting

Mediterraneo.

MARCH ISSUE No.2/ 11th-17th March 2014 (#22)
It’s all you need for a great read.
La Nucia
La Nucia Dog
Homing
Does a dog have doubts, so why should we.
You have probably heard of the saying ‘That if you
think you can’t or you think you can, then you are
probably right’ or ‘if you aim for nothing, then you
will probably be very successful’ I was thinking
about this the other day and began to wonder if
our dog friends have the same kind of thoughts.
Do they enter the pound and think ‘oh well I might
as well give up’ or do they enter and just get on
with life. Some of them come through the doors of
Benidorm Dog Pound and start to shake with fear,
perhaps the same as a condemned man walking
through the prison halls for the first time. The noise
from the other dogs is an assault on your senses
when you are a volunteer; dogs have much more
sensitive hearing and must suffer terribly. They
are locked in a cage. Food is from hotel left overs
and biscuits to give them bulk. A walk, well it’s a
distant dream as they may get one a week if they
are lucky. Yet these dogs don’t give up, they look
to you for love and attention. That short walk and
cuddle is longed for, hoped for and enjoyed for
every second you can spare them as they strain on
their leads to find a short burst of freedom through
the blue gates. How can I prove that dogs don’t
give up that they never stop hoping, well I went
through the pound and found some of our longest
serving captives, dogs that have been here 5 years,
all their lives and yet still dream that one day a
home will be theirs. If a dog can still dream when
the odds of being picked out of the pen are 300/1
then perhaps it’s time to believe you can be where
you want to be. Please can you help find a long
serving dog a home by checking out Benidorm Dog
Homing facebook page and look for Nando, Mesut,
Desperado, Saltitos and Tango. You can call Maria
on 677 37 33 96 to find out more. Gill Brookshaw

Dog of the week: Manuelo
This lovely girl is 2 and half years old. We know
because she was born in the pound and has never
known human love till now. She is now learning
what a walk on soil feels like after life in a concrete
cell. Cars are a new experience and make her feel
a bit nervous at the moment. The human hand
causes her to be worried and now that she is
learning to trust we are able to get her on a lead
and take her for a walk. She is great on the lead
and looks up at you for reassurance that all is
Ok with sweet eyes. A medium sized dog, about
labrador size and yet gentle and happy to just have
life's chance of a home. Find out more by joining
our facebook page at Benidorm Dog Homing or you
can call Maria on 677 37 33 96 to find out more.

U3A MARINA BAIXA
VISIT TO GANDIA
On Friday 7th.March 55 members of the U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed their first
outing of 2014.
Leaving Albir by luxury coach at 9am the first stop of the day was for morning
coffee at the Viva Espania, Oliva, giving everyone the opportunity to say meet their
fellow trippers. Our destination was Gandia to visit The Ducal Palace, also known
as the Palace of the Borgia family. The tour began at 11.00am with an English
speaking guide who had a wealth of knowledge to share with us about the history
of the Palace. The oldest part of the Palace dates from the 15th.Century and
was renovated in 2010 to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the birthplace of
Francisco Borja. The Golden Gallery and the Crown Hall were spectacular and the
members of the University of the Third Age absorbed this with enthusiasm.
After the tour the group had time to explore Gandia. Some were happy to sit in the
square and enjoy a drink in the sunshine, others took advantage of the shopping
and restaurants Gandia has to offer.

MARCH ISSUE No.2/ 11th-17th March 2014 (#22)
It’s all you need for a great read.
Your weekly Horoscope
ARIES
Even big, bad, bold you needs a little support now and then - like
at the beginning of this week. Since you’re usually so self-sufficient, you might have to ask. By Wednesday and Thursday, though, the
stars send bountiful super energy right to you, and you’re probably ready
to make a daring move (at work? In the love department? Maybe both?).
Go for it! If you’re staying up late or partying on Friday and Saturday, be
sure to make up for it with some healthy stuff, too. And on Sunday, use a
little charm to get your desire.
CANCER
You may want to nest or play it safe at the beginning of the week,
but the stars are sending some not-to-be-missed possibilities
your way. Welcome the new energy and make a new start. On Wednesday or Thursday, it might be time for a splurge - you deserve a reward,
don’t you? Plans go nicely on Friday and Saturday, and you’ve got the
ability to make others feel understood and right at home, no matter
where you are. Sunday brings a problem and an active, honest approach
gets things going in the right direction.
LIBRA
Just getting through your regular tasks may be tough at the
beginning of the week, but getting upset about it won’t help. Keep
at it, and look for better energy coming your way on Wednesday
and Thursday. Now you’re making progress, and looking so good doing
it that others might just ask you what your secret is. Will you tell? Social
time’s favoured on Friday and Saturday, as is some lazing about - that
is, recharging those batteries. A couple of days of extra sexiness start on
Sunday - what are you going to do to take advantage?
CAPRICORN
TAURUS
Home may be where the heart is at the beginning of the week, but
communication’s favoured now, too. Get on the phone or online
and share your feelings, and you’ll get very nice responses. You could
encounter somebody as stubborn as you on Wednesday or Thursday;
think what you can accomplish if you join forces instead of butting
heads! On Friday and Saturday, you’re looking lucky, and the chance for
romance is looking good. Plan a great date or head out on the town with
friends. On Sunday, excitement awaits in an unexpected place. Find it!
LEO
You have a catlike sixth sense at the beginning of the week, with
the reflexive knowledge of how to approach people and situations.
You’ll definitely land on your feet now. Wednesday and Thursday look
even better, with your personal heat turned up to sizzling. Energy, excitement, fun and fabulousness are there for the taking. Keep your expenditures to a minimum on Friday and Saturday; feed your mind instead of
opening your wallet. On Sunday, the universe serves you sweetness, with
a cherry on top. Revel in it.
SCORPIO
Dreams, intuition and other less-than-logical stuff figure prominently at the beginning of the week. Heed your inner voice, and let
your subconscious provide clues. Around Wednesday or Thursday, some
real-world hassles require your attention; handling them calmly reduces
the stress factor. Your karma gets a major boost if you step outside
yourself and donate your time, money or expertise (or all three) to a
good cause on Friday or Saturday. And on Sunday, be extra patient with
everyone - including yourself.
AQUARIUS
Conflict, opposition or limiting factors may come into play at the
beginning of the week, and your response is everything. Use your
powers of patience and flex your muscle of understanding. Make
a busy schedule and stick to it on Wednesday and Thursday - it could
come in handy when you’re asked to do something you’d rather not
do. Friday and Saturday find a goal or two definitely within reach, and
not just when it comes to work, either. On Sunday, the vibe is good for
kicking off a new project.
Even if you’re off-balance at the beginning of the week, stick with
your routine as much as possible. Going through the motions
has a therapeutic effect. By Wednesday and Thursday, you can identify
a contradiction, make a discovery and find a way to move forward that
feels great. An interruption or delay could be a good thing now. You’re
not so much judging books by their covers as speed-reading on Friday
and Saturday; find out a lot in short order. On Sunday, the stars send
extra brains and curiosity your way.

GEMINI
Being thrifty at the beginning of the week gives you a bit of a creative challenge, and it also gives you a little extra for a future plan
or splurge. Make your own lunch and make your own fun. You’re quick
with ideas and have the stamina to carry them out around Wednesday
and Thursday. Progress abounds! On Friday and Saturday, watch out for
some sort of interference - a misunderstanding, a busybody, something
getting lost in the shuffle. Be clear and concise. Sunday’s stars send you
extra sexiness now. Make the most of it!
VIRGO
Turn those organizational abilities toward planning a social event
or a great date at the beginning of the week - it’ll likely come
together as the best thing ever. You may be the underdog in a certain
situation on Wednesday or Thursday, but somebody’s pulling for you.
Figure out who, and get some tips and support. Friday and Saturday are
great days to be you. With the stars on your side, you can get a ton done
and also attract some attention via your extra sparkle. On Sunday, don’t
commit. You’ll want to stick with ‘maybe’ on any big decisions - at least
for today.
SAGITTARIUS
A deeper, more meaningful level can be reached at the beginning
of the week, whether in a relationship or in your own outlook. Your
core values are especially relevant now. You’re a winner on Wednesday
and Thursday, if the stars have their say - and remember, you can’t win
if you don’t play. Take a chance (maybe in the realm of romance!). Beware of imbalances of power on Friday and Saturday; anyone who thinks
they’re the boss of you could be problematic. You’re extra articulate and
very tuned on on Sunday - speak up!
PISCES
You’ve got the power of love on your side at the beginning of the
week - platonic, romantic, altruistic and more. How will you use
its mysterious forces? Wednesday or Thursday ask that you hone your
concentration and be attentive to what’s around you. The most mundane
things hold important keys now. You’re rather analytical on Friday and
Saturday, which may take somebody by surprise. Show your soft side,
too. Sunday is all about sorting through old things to make way for new
ones.

Six Nations Emphatic England end
It’s all you need for a great read.
11-year wait for Triple Crown at Twickenham
England won their first Triple
Crown for 11 years and stayed
firmly on course for the RBS 6 Nations title after reigning champions
Wales wilted in glorious Twickenham sunshine. Emphatically
avenging a record drubbing at
Wales' hands last season, England's 29-18 victory means if they
beat Italy in Rome next Saturday
and current tournament leaders Ireland lose or draw away to
France, then Chris Robshaw's men
will take the title. Wales' bid for an
unprecedented Six Nations title
hat-trick effectively ended on a
sobering afternoon for a team that
was also dismantled by Ireland
four weeks ago. Scrum-half Danny
Care and centre Luther Burrell
scored tries during the opening 35
minutes for England, while Owen
Farrell kicked 19 points, landing
all seven of his shots at goal. Only
Leigh Halfpenny's astonishing
accuracy - six penalties from six
attempts - kept Wales interested,
but they could have no complaints
as England's dominance gained
a rich and right reward on the
scoreboard. It was a landmark
success in England coach Stuart

also struck an early psychological
blow ahead of the countries' World

months' time.

FA Cup: Wigan
KO Man City

FA Cup holders Wigan booked a semi-final date
with Arsenal after stunning Manchester City in
a 2-1 win at The Etihad. Jordi Gomez and James
Perch struck as Wigan kept their defence going
with an heroic display on Sunday afternoon. Gomez
converted a penalty after more bad defending by
the erratic Martin Demichelis and Perch tapped
in early in the second half as the holders booked
a semi-final date with Arsenal at Wembley. Samir
Nasri did pull one back with a 20-yard half-volley
on 68 as City produced a strong finish but they
Adrian Lewis £50,000
Jackpot
A good week for ‘Jackpot’ in the darts as he came
from 6-3 down to rescue a point against world
champion Michael van Gerwen in the Premier League
before going on to add a fourth major over the
weekend with victory in the UK Open in Minehead.
Lewis emerged from the ‘FA Cup of darts’ and a field
of 138 hopefuls before battering Terry Jenkins 11-1 in
the final. Lewis moved back up to World No 3 in the
process and also took home a £50,000 first prize,
not bad for a weekend away in Butlins.
were unable to prevent a repeat of Wigan's shock
victory in last year's final at Wembley. The result
was a tactical triumph for former City striker Uwe
Rosler, who has revived Wigan's fortunes since taking
over as manager in December. A week ago his side
produced a fightback to snatch the Capital One Cup
from Sunderland but they could not repeat the feat
and hopes of a domestic treble are over.
Sheffield dream on
English third-tier club Sheffield United kept alive their
FA Cup dream when two goals in as many minutes
gave them a 2-0 victory over Charlton Athletic and a
place in the semi-finals. They were joined in the last
four by Hull City, who overcame a missed penalty by
Sone Aluko to trounce Sunderland 3-0 in their allPremier League quarterfinal.
Hull’s Curtis Davies, David Meyler and Matty Fryatt
scored in a nine-minute spell, capitalising on two
wretched mistakes by Sunderland midfielder Lee
Cattermole as Steve Bruce’s club advanced to the
semis for the first time since 1930.

stake on our Cellar Bar Cert Tip selected by Ian Charman

Luckers have drifted further away from Kim & Rachel’s Team

Stretford Enders have been making steady progress in
this Section and they are now in 3rd spot.No change at the
bottom of this League where Alan’s Team Wangies Al Stars
remain 10 points behind Stuart’s Beach Terrace Boys.
The highest scoring Team this Week was Laik’s Loonies(44)
and lowest scoring Team was Gareth side Epic with a minus
5 both will go into our Premier Imports Draw at the end of

ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
For the 2nd Week running the Fantasy League produced
another low scoring Week with the average score being only
13 points.There was 3 F.A.Cup Ties & 5 Premier League
games contributing to this weeks Fantasy which produced
25 goals,4 clean sheets,27 yellow cards and 2 red ones.
Spurs Kaboul (who I thought was little harsh to be sent
off) and Stoke’s Penalty Taker Walters both received their
marching orders.
Danielle’s Team Charlie’s Chico’s made it to the top of the
Fantasy League for the 2nd time this Season when they
took over from Abby’s Brigade. The lead is only 2 points.
Laik’s Lonies are in 3rd place just behind the Leaders then
comes Rob’s Team Scunny F.C. This Season the Fantasy
League is turning out to be one of the most intriguing yet, as
only 60 points separate the top Ten Teams so anybody can
still win it.At the other end of the Table Heidi’s Pot Luckers
are 22 points adrift of Ben’s Boys.
Rocky’s Mini Spurs managed to close the gap on the
runaway Leaders Abby Brigade at the top our Junior League
while Gian’s Team Monsuno Marauders slipped into 3rd
place and could make a big challenge on the top 2 in the
next few weeks. At the other end Ben’s Boys are already
braced for the big drop at the end of the Season.
Charlie’s Chico’s are still top of our Mark Carter Ladies
League but coming up fast on the rails is the in form Laik’s
Loonies who this Week bagged the highest score in this
Section with 44 points all her 5 Defenders kept clean sheets

Biggest ever Winter Paralympics
The biggest ever Winter
Paralympics has started in Sochi.
More than 500 athletes from
45 countries will compete for 72
gold medals in five sports over 10
days. It is the largest number of
countries to take part in the event
since it was first held in 1976.
Teenager Millie Knight carried the
British flag during the opening
ceremony. The ceremony was held
at the Fisht Stadium on Friday 7th
March, events started on Saturday.
Britain have sent a team of 15
athletes and have already made
history, Kelly Gallagher and guide
Charlotte Evans won Paralympic
GB's first ever gold at the Winter
Games with victory in the visually
impaired super-G in Sochi. They
both manage to communicate
on their way down the slopes via
bluetooth headsets as they travel
at speeds of up to 100km/h. Since
linking up together, they have
won silver and bronze medals
in the 2011 and 2013 World
Championships as well as World
Cup honours. Britain has had
athletes competing in every Winter
Paralympics since the first event
in 1976 in Sweden. Gallagher and
Evans and Etherington and Powell
will be in action again on Tuesday,
along with Turney and fellow
sit-skier Mick Brennan when they
compete in the super combined
event.
Carl
Froch v
George
Groves:
60,000 tickets sold as Groves demands neutral
referee for Wembey fight. George Groves will
refuse to fight Carl Froch unless the British Boxing
Board of Control sanction neutral officials for their
super-middleweight world title rematch at Wembley
Stadium. The 25-year-old Londoner has claimed the
May 31 rematch, mandated by the IBF, will not go
ahead unless the BBBofC allow a non-British crew
of match officials. Groves labelled the ninth-round
stoppage by referee Howard Foster that handed Froch
a controversial victory in November a "stonewall"
robbery.
