Registrations are valid with full
payment. Register up to three days
before class by phone, walk-in or
mail (not by voice mail). Cash (not
by mail), check, VISA, MasterCard,
Discover, and American Express
are accepted. Registration
confirmations are issued via email
upon request. Class fees cannot be prorated.
Refunds are not given after the
second class. A 50% charge will
be withheld for cancellations made
within four days prior to the start
date of class.
Class Cancellations due to
weather or faculty illness will be
rescheduled based on classroom
and staff availability, but are
not guaranteed. Under-enrolled
classes will be cancelled three
business days prior to first day of
class.
Art School Policies are available
in the Art School office upon

General Open Studio is open to
all adult students enrolled in the
current class and free of charge.

Pre-College Portfolio
Development Program is a threeyear subsidized program designed
to strengthen a gifted high school
freshmen’s visual art skills for
college entrance. Applications for
the February 2016 session are
available September 14, 2015.
Student Artwork not picked up
within two weeks of the end of the
session will be discarded.
Student Membership
FIA Members receive 20% off
class fees, priority enrollment, the
FIA Magazine, free admission to
exhibitions, and a 10% discount
in The Palette café and Museum
Shop.
FIA Youth Membership participants (ages 2.5–12) receive a
20% discount on class fees, a
10% discount in The Palette café
and Museum Shop, mailings in
their name, and three free Youth
Membership Activities per year for
students ages 5–12.

Art Supplies are discounted 20%
in the FIA Museum Shop (for
enrolled students only).
Lockers may be rented in the Art
School office with your own lock
for $13 per session or $35 per
year. The FIA is not responsible for
items lost or stolen from lockers,
galleries or studios. Lockers may
not be rented by phone.
Scholarships are distributed
based on need. Applications
are available April 27 and
must be returned by May 22.
Forms are available on-line.
To be eligible, applicants must
disclose their household income
on the application. If granted,
scholarship co-pay is required
prior to the first class meeting.
Late co-payments may forfeit the
scholarship. Individuals may be
awarded three scholarships in a
two-year period of time, although
the FIA may waive this restriction
for designated programs.
Scholarships are limited to two per
household per session.
Share studio time with your
young artist. Classes are priced
per adult/child pair. A second
sibling may enroll in class at a
50% rate. Three children must be
accompanied by two adults. Each
pair and threesome must register
separately. Ask the office about
discounts for families of five or
more. Infants up to 12 months
may accompany their caregiver
free of charge.

Musical Instruments in Clay

Join in the fun while exploring
some hand-building techniques
to make musical instruments
with your toddler. Work together
to make whimsical and animalthemed shakers, rattles, whistles,
and flutes by rolling, poking, and
pinching the clay. Each instrument
will then be painted with our
brightly colored under glazes. It is
going to get noisy in here!

The Kitchen

Join your toddler and learn
the basics of hand-building by
creating your favorite foods in
our “clay” kitchen. You and your
little chef will artistically create
a clay pizza, ice cream sundae,
and spaghetti platter by rolling,
pinching and patting the clay. Top
it off by decorating your yummy
creations with brightly colored
under glazes.

Pottery Wheel & More

Learn basic wheel throwing and
hand-building techniques to create
a variety of functional bowls and
cups decorated with colorful
slip and under glaze decoration.
Both parent and child will learn
the basics of wedging, centering,
throwing, trimming, surface
decoration, and glazing. Students
with experience on the wheel are
free to explore and develop their
skills with the direction of the

handle-making to attach to your
works of art as well as textures

Here’s a great way for you and
your toddler to have fun creating
clay projects while practicing their
fine motor skills. Learn how to
roll coils, pound, pinch and pat
clay to artistically form and create
a teapot, teacup and saucer,
cupcake stand, and other tea party
necessities. Come in party attire
for our last day of class to properly
present our projects at our Grand
Tea Party!

Guy Adamec has an MFA
from Cranbrook Academy of
Art and is the FIA Ceramics
Studio Fire Master. Guy has
been a studio potter and
ceramics instructor for more
than 25 years. He exhibits
his work throughout the
midwest.
Jim Ames has taught
watercolor for 35 years and
is a member of the American
Water Color Society. He is
the author of Color Theory
Made Easy and has lectured
on color theory at many
leading U.S. art schools.
Rebecca Andrus has a BS
in Fine Arts from Illinois State
University and is pursuing her
masters in Early Childhood
Education at the University of
Michigan-Flint. She has been
an artist/educator for more
than 25 years.
Alla Dubrovich has an MFA
and BFA from the Moscow
Pedagogical University in
Moscow, Russia. She is a
freelance illustrator and also
teaches at Mott Community
College and the University of
Michigan-Flint.
Alice Foster-Stocum has
taught at the FIA since 1982.
She earned a degree at
Michigan State University
and studied under several
renowned fiber artists. She
has exhibited her work at
numerous art venues.
Jeff Hageman has a BFA
from the Kansas City Art
Institute in ceramics. Jeff
specializes in teapots and
sculptures constructed from
thrown parts.
Craig Hinshaw has a BS
in art education from Ball
State University, and an MFA
from Cranbrook Academy of
Art. He has been teaching
elementary art in Michigan
schools for 30 years.

while engaging their minds and
bodies in creativity and productive
summer play. Enroll separately for
each week. Drop off times begin
at 8:30a. Each Friday, friends and
families will gather at 4:00p for

exhibition reception.

drawing the hand including line,
line weight, shading, and crosshatching. Working from both
observation and resource material,
students will create a series of
small drawings using graphite,

they desire to render, either on
paper or canvas, and learn how to
integrate gold leaf into a drawing
or painting. Gold leaf, gold and
interference acrylic paint will
be available to experiment with
and highlight areas of interest.
Examples in both art history and
contemporary art will be provided
to supplement a discussion about
strategic uses of highlighting in
gold, so bring your ideas, creative
energy and together we will make

advantages and challenges
of working on landscapes as
subject matter. Several sketching
techniques will be demonstrated
while students explore a variety of
mediums. We will work at different
locations within Genesee County
including Applewood estate,
For-Mar Nature Preserve, and
Stepping Stone Falls. Students
are expected to use their own
vehicles. If it rains we will work in
the FIA studio.

This class will focus on
pastel portrait painting using
photographs as reference
materials. Students will explore
the process of rendering detail
and textures while paying special
attention to mapping techniques,
the anatomy of head and hands,
color layering and mixing, and
much more. Mediums include both
hard and soft chalk pastels.
Philip Ruehle received a
BFA & MFA in painting from
Kendall College of Art and
Design. Ruehle’s artistic
output ranges from wildlife
to abstract painting to
sculpture, with recognition
for miniature figurative
painting.
Lois Sharp-Schneider
owns The Yoga Loft & Sharp

and has taught Iyengar Yoga

Take the guesswork out of mixing
watercolors by creating your own
color charts with a limited palette.
Using the color bias color wheel
as a guide, mix a wide range of
