After the death of its longtime caretaker, feral cat colony needs help

The voice on the phone was worried.
“I need to find someone to take care of a feral cat colony,” the man said. “We had someone
who took care of the cats for more than 10 years,
but he died last week. It’s cold and we’re really
worried about the cats.”
The cat colony, located in Dundalk between
a rec center and an apartment complex, lives in
and around a small strand of woods. It has homemade shelters for the cats — boxes, cartons and
tarps — to protect them from the weather. It also
has food bowls which need to be filled on a regular basis.
The man who had been taking care of the
cats, Dundalk resident Frank Vain, died of pneumonia, but had become increasingly frail prior
to that. Still, said those who knew him, he had
spent the waning years of his life caring for the
cats.
“The man was on oxygen, but he would find
his way down there to care for those cats,” says
Sandy Kosmaczewski of Highlandtown. “He
was an angel.”
According to Sandy’s husband Ben, the cats,
about a dozen in all, don’t take much, but they
do need feeding.
They are hoping that someone steps up to the
plate to help out.
“We want to help,” says Ben, a Highlandtown
resident, “but we can’t be there every day, and
that’s what the cats need.”
The public’s view of cat colonies — groups
of cats that live in the wild together, much the
way lions live in a pride — has changed considerably over the years. In the past, cats without an
owner simply would have been written off by
onlookers as problematic strays, rounded up and
euthanized.
However, the thinking has changed. Animal advocates say feral cat colonies, defined
as groups of cats that were born outdoors and
which live their lives as wild animals rather than
as pets, have a role to play in the ecosystem of a
given area. They keep the rodent and small animal population under control, and they are territorial, keeping to their own area and not interacting with people or other cats for the most part.
Organizations have also evolved to help those
who are interested deal with the situation of feral cat colonies. The Spay/Neuter Coalition, an
organization formed in 2007 by Alley Cat Allies, the Maryland SPCA, the Baltimore Animal
Rescue and Care Shelter, and the Maryland Feline Society, advocates for trap-neuter-release, or
TNR, programs for outdoor cats.
Advocates say feral cats, when spayed and
neutered, are far less likely to display the negative behaviors of unaltered cats, such as yowling,
fighting and marking. (They also don’t breed,
which means the population stays stable).
Another change in the way of thinking has
been the concept of a caretaker of a colony, such
as Vain. It is the responsibility of the caretaker
to go through local programs such as the Spay/
Neuter Coalition, to use humane traps to catch
the cats, then have them sterilized and vaccinated against rabies.
The cats are then ear-tipped (the very edge of
one ear is clipped or notched while the cat is under anesthesia), to show that the animal has seen
a vet. They are then released back into the wild

Two neighborhood groups get ready to face off in basketball

March Madness hasn’t even begun, but already, Kevin Bernhard and Joe Di Mattina are
talking trash. Only instead of Michigan State
vs. North Carolina (or even the Hoosiers vs. the
Terps), they’re throwing down about Highlandtown and Patterson Park.
“Of course we can whip them,” Bernhard
snorts. “We’re Highlandtown.”
“No,” says DiMattina. “We have Sam Cassell.
He’s an assistant coach with the Washington
Wizards. Well, we don’t have him playing for
us, but he came from our neighborhood. He was
born in Baltimore and he has ties to Patterson
Park. And his uncle owns a bar in our neighborhood, The New Cassell’s. You can’t have him,
Highlandtown. Take that.”
And so it goes. Highlandtown Community
Association (led by newly-elected president
Kevin Bernhard) and Patterson Park Neighborhood Association (headed up by longtime neighborhood activist Joe Di Mattina) are ramping up
the excitement for their upcoming neighborhood
basketball face off. It will be on Saturday, Feb.
13 at 5 p.m. in the gymnasium of Breath of God
Lutheran Church.
The two teams are practicing in the church’s
gym on selected Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m.
(Contact information for both team captains is
found at the end of this article, for those who
want to join in the fun).
And fun is the operative word here.
“We might play four on four,” says Bernhard.

“I think the winner gets to pick the bar everyone celebrates in afterward,” says Rev. Mark
Parker, pastor of Breath of God, and in his words,
“host and somewhat instigator” of the event, although it didn’t take much convincing.”
It’s not the first time the two neighborhoods
have met, either.
“We had a softball game last year,” says Di
Mattina. “(City Councilman) Jim Kraft was our
umpire. We made up T-shirts and everything.”
Rumor has it that the two neighborhoods
played a best-of-three series, and tied with one
game each. The third game that served as the
tiebreaker?
“It was a friendly competition,” says Pastor
Mark.

Theater group offers dinner, dessert, comedy and a side of murder

Sometimes, Valentine’s Day is celebrated with
wine and roses, sometimes with cards and sometimes with, well, murder. And oddly enough,
they wind up being funny.
At least that’s according to the Riverside
Stage. There, a murder mystery is about to be
enacted on Valentine’s Eve (Saturday, Feb. 13) as
dinner theater, with a side order of humor, just in
time for that great lovers’ holiday.
And it makes sense. Why spend the evening
of an overblown holiday fighting crowds, taking
attitude from surly waiters and worrying about
all the pressures of creating the perfect romantic
evening when you can spend time (either with or
without a beloved companion) in the company
of a crowd of soon-to-be friends, laughing and
trying to piece together the next clue in a dinner
theater and murder mystery?
“One of the Gang,” a comedy set in Baltimore
during the roaring 20s, sees two warring factions
-- the Irish mafia and the Italian mafia, meeting
to break bread and settle their long-running feud
on Valentine’s Day. Only something goes slightly wrong. Make that horribly wrong. Someone
gets murdered.
And that’s when the fun starts, says Michael
Hulett, president of Musical Artists Theater,
which works at Riverside Stage.
“It’s an audience participation show, where the
audience can get involved in helping to solve the

crime,” Hulett says. “Or they don’t have to. We
don’t make people go up on stage or anything,
but if they want to take the role of the investigators who help solve the crime, the cast will work
with that. Otherwise, they can just laugh and enjoy the show as an audience member.”
The production uses a setup siliar to that of
the St. Valentine’s Massacre, the Chicago Prohibition-era slaying commonly attributed to Al
Capone. Do Or Die Productions, the improv
company, has worked up a fictional history, how-
ever, and they take all kinds of suggestions from
the audience. And they do mean all kinds.
“We’ve very participatory,” says C.J. Crowe,
president of the improv group. We want to know
who it is the audience wants to see die.”
The play, she adds, runs between two and two
and a half hours, depending upon how much input the audience wants to have (or not have). It
includes full catered dinner that includes carved
sirloin and turkey breast, vegetable lasagne, side
dishes, vegetables and desserts. Dinner starts at
6:30 p.m., and the play begins at 8 p.m. Show
and dinner tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the
door, or $18 for the show only.
The hall will be decorated like a 1920s speakeasy. Oh, and hey, it’s the Prohibition era, so
there isn’t a bar. It is a family-friendly show. Still,
says Hulett, “really little kids might not get it.”
Because this is participatory theater, audience
members are welcome to come in period clothes,
but it’s not required at all.
“There’s no dress code,” says Hulett. “If you
want to dress up, that’s fine. My wife is going to
want to come as a flapper, and I am probably going to come dressed as her bodyguard, but whatever people want to wear—people do not need to
come dressed up to this.”
“We want people to smile and laugh and have
a nice time,” says Crowe. “That’s the only thing
we’re looking for.”

A couple of weeks ago, I settled in at Don’t
Know Tavern looking for the fine-dining menu
of my dreams. What I found was a pretty standard sports bar. The wings were good, but the
experience was somewhat deflating.
Turns out, I was just a block or so off. Don’t
Know’s previous chef, Matt Merkel, was just
down the street at The Reserve. And so was
his creative, ambitious cuisine. What better place
to check out for our inaugural Restaurant Week
outing?
The South Baltimore corner bar turned out
to be a handsome, expansive space with high
tables, fieldstone trim, and an open kitchen.
With all these hard surfaces—not to mention the
TVs—I can imagine that it gets pretty noisy in
here on busy drinking nights. At an early dinner
hour, though, all was peaceful and conversationfriendly.
The special menu, available through February
7, includes the diner’s choice of seven appetizers,
five entrees and three desserts. Interesting, there’s
no poultry, and little apparent interest in catering
to vegetarians. But if meat and seafood are your
meal of choice, The Reserve’s are primo.
My dining companion Jackie chose abalone
tatak as a starter. I don’t recall ever tasting abalone, but I had some idea that it was like conch—
i.e., fishy and dauntingly chewy. It was neither.
The texture was firm and meaty, and the flavor
at first bite recalled liver. It was served sliced in
its pretty, pearly shell, atop udon noodles and
greens with an intriguing Asian flavor (tatak is a
Filipino word). While tasty, this dish was worthwhile mostly as a curiosity, unlike my “petite

lamb three ways,” which was delicious. Three
little lamb chops were nestled on top of three
sauces: three-mustard cream, yellow curry, and
a dusky blackberry merlot. When mingled with
the lamb’s juices, the sauces weren’t as distinct
as they might have been, but this was a minor
criticism. More puzzling was the apparent lack
of a promised “scallion and black truffle terrine,” although the accompanying rich scalloped
potatoes were yummy.
If Restaurant Week eating was a contest, I definitely won the first round, but Jackie trounced
me in the next. My saffron-infused seafood risotto was flanked by a pillowy seared scallop
and a large grilled shrimp, and topped with a
lobster claw—perfect so far. I wasn’t as enamored of the risotto, though; there’s a fine line be-

Commodore John Rodgers School is one of
two elementary/middle schools to get a makeover this year. The other is Calverton Elementary/Middle in West Baltimore.
Part of the BCPS plan is to allow fifth-graders
tween al dente and stiff, and this one crossed it.
Jackie, on the other hand, got the venison medallions. Ahhhh…three perfectly tender, delectably rare hunks of meat, more complex in flavor
than beef, but perfectly accessible to the novice.
They were moistened with more of that lovely
Merlot sauce, and served with a swirl of mashed
potatoes subtly flavored with sprigs of fennel.
Desserts ranged from simple (polenta cheese-
citywide to choose where they want to go for
middle school, instead of receiving an assignment to a neighborhood school.
All of the 12 schools facing closing or sweeping changes are distinguished by low test scores
and decreasing enrollment.
Last year, 35 percent of Commodore John
Rodgers students passed the statewide math
test, and fewer than half passed the reading test,
and fewer than two-thirds of parents and staff
responded positively to a survey about the “climate” of the school.

John Rodgers be administered by an outside
agency or company.

former had a hearty, somewhat grainy texture
and an anise-spiked flavor; as for the topping, as
Jackie put it, there’s nothing like booze-soaked
strawberries to put one in a good mood. The
mousse—the sexy, dark, muddy kind—was layered between phyllo leaves, and topped with a
chocolate spiderweb. Sound good? Oh yes.
In true fine-dining style, the presentation was
splendid, but there wasn’t a lot of food on those
artistically-arranged plates. Trenchermen might
be a bit miffed, especially as no bread was served,
either. Still, if quality, not quantity, tops your restaurant wishlist, The Reserve is a welcome addition to the SoBo scene.
The Latest Dish…
I attended last week’s grand opening cocktail
party at Milan, which was full of those “Toto,
I don’t think we’re in Baltimore anymore” moments. The former home of Luigi Petti and Petalo has received an extreme makeover and is now
a sleek, chic, three-level showcase for designer
martinis and “fashion-forward food.”
Everything is white and silver, with accents of
red and espresso-brown; white leather couches,
dining nooks draped in gauze and silver beads
and tucked-away private TV lounges were an appropriate setting for the cocktail crowd of young
women in drop-dead Little Black Dresses and
expertly groomed metrosexual men. The menu
is Mediterranean with a twist: this is the only restaurant in town where you’ll find salami behind
the sushi bar (“sushi Italiano” is a specialty) and
prices noted in dollars…and in euros!

p.m.: A man choked his girlfriend during an argument. A warrant is out for his arrest.
1800 block Light St., Tuesday, Jan. 26, 7:40
p.m.: A woman was standing near the street
when a passenger in a passing car fired a paintball gun at her. The pellet struck her in the head.
The suspect continued on in the car.

1300 block Kuper Pl., Friday, Jan. 29, 9:40
a.m.: A man got out of jail and decided to buy
drugs. He hooked up with two others and they
smoked crack together at the victim’s house, and
the victim smoked $50 worth of crack that he
did not pay for, but told the others he would go
to the bank and get money to pay them. On the
way to the bank the suspects showed the victim
a knife and said they would kill him if he did not
pay. The victim had no money on deposit at any
bank, but when the men arrived at the bank the

announced flu immunization clinics available to
the general public. All residents are encouraged

On January 16, 2010, Fort McHenry National
Monument and Historic Shrine began a temporary prohibition of bicycle use within the park
until the construction of the new visitor center is
completed in the fall of 2010.
While we know that this may disappointment
some bikers, the decision was made based on
safety concerns and protection of the grounds.
As the construction of the new visitor center
moves into high gear, more construction vehicles
are using the main road. The new visitor center
blocks the loop trail, which would cause congestion between pedestrians and bicyclists.
The park recognizes that many visitors especially our local neighbors in South Baltimore
and Locust Point use the loop trail and grounds
for rcreation. The loop trail will be reopened for
bicycle use once the new center is completed.
In addition, as part of the construction of the
new visitor center the current Seawall Trail will
be widened and a bicycle path will be added to
the trail to provide a safer environment for park
visitors. The path will also be re-graded to avoid
the dips that result in water pooling.
Bicycle racks will be provided at both the
main gate and the temporary parking lot for visitors who wish to ride their bicycles to the park
and visit the grounds on foot. We appreciate
everyone’s understanding as we improve the infrastructure of the park.

Being a caretaker for a cat colony, while not a
full-time job, is a commitment of the mind, heart
and body. It involves acting as the supervisor of
the colony — making sure food and water bowls
are kept filled, and creating a shelter to help protect the cats from harsh weather.
It can be a monetary commitment too. The
Spay/Neuter Coalition works to help provide
traps, and assist cat caregivers with locating lowcost sterilization services. it also provides educational resources, including how-to meetings, so
that individuals learn the proper care of feral cat
colonies.
As one site offering spay/neuter services, the
Maryland SPCA sees its share of feral cats.
“We had a banner year in 2009,” says executive director Aileen Gabbey. “We fixed 1,450 feral cats, and a total of 9,761 animals overall.”
According to Ben Kosmaczewski, the person
who steps up to care for the Dundalk colony
shouldn’t have to worry about the cost of cat
food. He has helped develop a relationship with
some local merchants who donate dry or canned
cat food, whatever is available. And the cats
aren’t all that picky, he adds. If it’s in the bowl,
it gets eaten.
On a cold day, before snow was expected to
move in, one black and white shorthaired cat
was in the area near the colony. The cat dove
hungrily on dry food poured out by a visitor, but
like all feral cats, backed away warily when approached.
The problem, Ben Kosmaczewski notes, is
making the commitment, and having the ability
to do it. The job could be done by one person, but
if several individuals trade off days, it becomes
less of a burden. Before Frank Vain cared for the
cats an elderly Dundalk woman had the job, but
now has limited mobility and is unable to do it.
“We all do what we can,” says Kosmaczewski, “but we can’t do it forever. We really need
someone in the area.”
Aileen Gabbey says anyone who takes over
the job joins a group of individuals the SPCA
holds in high regard.
“We love working with the caretakers,” she
says. “We’ve met the nicest people through our
spay/neuter clinic. They make a huge difference
keeping the cat population under control.”
