Volume 21 Issue 9

September 2007
The USS New York:
built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.
The ship’s motto? “Never Forget”
“Freedom isn’t Free”
It is the fifth in a new class of
warship-designed for missions
that include special operations
against terrorists. It will carry a
crew of 360 sailors and 700
combat-ready Marines to be
delivered ashore by helicopters
and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade
Center was melted down in
a foundry in Amite, LA to
cast the ship’s bow section.
When it was poured into the
molds on September 9th, 2003,
“those big rough steelworkers
treated it with total reverence,”
recalled Navy Captain Kevin
Wensing, who was there. “It
was a spiritual moment for
everybody there.”
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when
the Trade Center steel first
arrived, he touched it with his
hand and the “hair on my neck
stood up. It had a big meaning
to it for all of us,” he said.
“They knocked us down. They
can’t keep us down. We’re
going to be back.”

Dear fellow motorcyclists:
American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and
Education (A.B.A.T.E.) of Minnesota is a not for
profit, grass roots organization that is committed to
educating motorcyclists and the general public
about motorcycling. A.B.A.T.E. members ride many
different types and brands of motorcycles. We are
all people with a common interest in a common
activity. The fact that we share an interest in motorcycling is more important than the type of motorcycle we ride.
There are chapters of A.B.A.T.E. located throughout
Minnesota. Each of these chapters are represented
on the A.B.A.T.E. Board of Directors (BOD). The
BOD also includes the A.B.A.T.E. state officers. The
BOD meets once each quarter to discuss the operation
of the organization. In addition, each chapter holds a
monthly meeting in their area of the state. A.B.A.T.E. is
a member driven organization. Members are encouraged to participate in any of these meetings. A.B.A.T.E.
seeks to promote the positive aspects of motorcycling
and strives to protect the rights of motorcyclists by
being involved in the local, state and national political
process. Safer motorcycling, reducing accidents and
fatalities can be best accomplished by education and
training of both the motorcyclists and the general
public, not necessarily through additional legislation.
Our ability to enjoy many freedoms while riding
motorcycles in Minnesota is the direct result of the work
done by motorcyclists in our state. These people have
joined together to fight for our rights and freedoms.

The efforts of these people have made Minnesota a
leader in motorcycle safety. We have one of the toughest licensing standards in the nation, the best public
awareness programs, and the most comprehensive
rider education programs in the nation. These efforts
have helped reduce motorcycle accidents, injuries, and
fatalities in spite of the growing number of licensed
motorcyclists in Minnesota.
To continue these efforts we need your support and
participation. Show your commitment to protecting and
preserving your rights as a motorcyclist in
Minnesota. Participate in the meetings, rides, and the
fund-raising activities. You will be informed about the
motorcycle activities in the state by receiving Road
Noise, the A.B.A.T.E. monthly news publication.
A.B.A.T.E. is fun, educational and a great way to meet
people and make new friends with similar interests.
With your help, we can continue to promote the positive
image of motorcyclists. If you want more information
about A.B.A.T.E., please attend any of our meetings,
meet other members, and ask questions.
We are pleased that you have decided your rights are
worth protecting, that the positive aspects of motorcycling are worth promoting, that education is important,
and that the cost of an A.B.A.T.E. membership is a
small price to pay to preserve and promote these principles. Members are the most important thing that
A.B.A.T.E. has, so Thank You for becoming a member
and we look forward to seeing you at our events.

~Francois de la Rochefoucauld
A hearty welcome to the newest
Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota,
the Freedom First Riders. This new
Chapter started with 100 members in
the Parkers Prairie area, and with the
enthusiasm they have, will surely
grow. Through the efforts of many
dedicated people within our organization, membership in A.B.A.T.E. of
Minnesota is at an all time high.
People join for many reasons, but as
I travel around Minnesota talking to
A.B.A.T.E. members, new and old,
one thing is clear: They want the
rights and safety of motorcyclists
protected. However, there are always
a few people who like to use the
organization as their own personal
“Survivor” game. They wish to create
issues out of thin air, force people to
take sides, then have their side win
and the other side voted “off the
island.” It is a huge waste of time and
energy at a time when we will need
all our force to combat the plans of
ASSISTANT STATE
COORDINATOR
Kevin Todd

[email protected]
Well, after spending a very relaxing
week on our beautiful North Shore
along Lake Superior, I have a whole
new outlook on motorcycling in
Minnesota.
It would appear that the majority of
people who live up there, including
motorcyclists, have no idea what
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota is or its purpose and goals. They most certainly
enjoy riding with no helmet and the
occasional “ape hangers,” but have
no idea how or why they have that
privilege. Needless to say, it was a
very informative week to all those I
spoke to. Will they join? Some did
and others want to see how their
“buddies” fare as members.
Why am I talking about this? It would
appear that even though we have
www.abatemn.org
insurance companies, government
agencies, and some legislators, whose
goal is to protect you from yourself
by any means. New members bring
new ideas, new energy, and new ways
of doing things. By embracing
change and welcoming new ideas,
A.B.A.T.E. will continue to grow in
members and accomplishments.
People who study statistics can look
over a document and instantly see a
number that is out of line with the
other numbers. And when government agencies and insurance companies look at motorcycling deaths they
see a percentage number that is higher than all the rest. While we are
working hard at explaining the reasons (such as increases in motorcycle
registrations and overall traffic numbers that are sky high) I hear the
same thing over and over; “We don’t
care. The motorcycle fatality numbers
are too high and we will bring them
down one way or another.” We will
continue to monitor the legislative
side of motorcycling, but another way
to reduce those numbers is through
training. According to 2006 Minnesota
statistics; in 17% of motorcycle fatalities the operator had no motorcycle
endorsement or an invalid license.
And 56% of fatalities were single
vehicle crashes, meaning the rider ran
into a fixed object or lost control.
Surely these are two areas where
motorcycle training can help. I know
that many of our Chapters have
enough funds to help not only our
members, but the entire motorcycle
community get the training that is so
badly needed. Perhaps your Chapter
could sponsor free or reduced fee
motorcycle training for anyone currently riding without an endorsement.
Or free or reduced fee training for
any older riders getting back into
motorcycling. For some of the older
riders, the last time they were on two
wheels was back in the 1980’s. They
could use a refresher course. The
ideas are endless. Call
me if you want to discuss further.
A.B.A.T.E. money was raised for
motorcyclists’ rights and safety. In
my mind, teaching others to ride
more safely is a better use of that
money than the local “Kids without
Laptop Computers” fund drive. This
kind of proactive thinking will be a
difficult change for some people. But
the only way to live in the past forever is to invent a time machine.
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota will continue to focus on the future.
Yours in freedom,
Mack
raised our membership numbers
immensely over the last few years,
there is still a lot of work to do to
inform the motorcycling public about
A.B.A.T.E., what it stands for, and its
purpose and accomplishments. That
job falls to all of us! As we ride, we
need to make sure that we spread the
word about A.B.A.T.E. Now is no
time to become complacent with our
freedoms in Minnesota. Part of our
duties as members is to inform and
EDUCATE the public about us. To do
that, we all need to be ambassadors.
Spread the news...we are here and
we are not going anywhere, because
WE are fighting for ALL
MOTORCYCLISTS in Minnesota!
Be sure and give Dale and Wendy
Steinborn a big “Thanks” when you
see them. This is my third year of
being involved in the Rally, and I can
say from experience and personal
“inside” information that these two
are the very heart of our Rally. Dale
has a way of making people want to
be involved, and makes it a fun
experience besides. We have spent
many hours talking about making our
Rally better and he never runs out of
ideas! To top that, they both are
personal friends that will give the
world...if asked. So give them a big
thank you, along with the rest of the
people involved in this year’s Rally.
They will appreciate it.
No doubt as you are reading this, you
are probably already at our 19th
Annual State Rally in Litchfield. Nine
bands plus a Comic to entertain us,
besides all kinds of contests, vendors,
hay rides, a Fashion Show (and who
knows what will happen at that?),
plus the Best Friends all together to
have a good time.
With that, I better get this off to the
Road Noise or Becky will be writing
about me in the next issue...after she
speaks to me with a Baseball Bat!
Contact me through the website or
this publication. I will answer all calls
and emails. See you in Litchfield!

2007 Board of Directors meeting.
6
September 2007
Treasurer’s Report: Mitch Backlund
reported for the three months ending
June 30th 2007 total revenues for the
whole organization of $68,717.49;
total expenses of $66,226.27; net
income of $ 2,491.22. In those three
months we’ve sent MPAC of
Minnesota $1,599. We ended June
with cash in the bank of $151,281.84.
Of that, a little over $98,000 is under
control of the State, $53,000 is under
control of the Chapters. A summary
of the Gambling account for the same
three months shows a total income of
$55,350.00; expenses of $28,121.70,
with a net income of $27,228.30;
Gambling cash in the bank of
$63,682.01.
New Business:
Bill Shaffer, who works with the
Minnesota Motorcycle Safety
Program, on behalf of the Minnesota
Safety Foundation (MSF) presented a
Certificate of Recognition and
thanked A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota for
the generous $10,000 donation for the
purchase of training motorcycles and
A.B.A.T.E.’s on-going great support.
Shaffer gave a quick update on the
last Motorcycle Safety Advisory
Committee meeting which was held
Thursday night (7/19/07) in Duluth.
Due to a lack of a quorum there was
no voting done. Minnesota has put in
an application for NTSA Section
2010 motorcycle safety funding. At
the May meeting they talked about
the common road DVD developed by
the Motorcycle Safety Foundation
which is about motorist awareness
and was recommended by the
Committee to be distributed to drivers
training classes. There are about 315
public and private driver training
schools in Minnesota. About 130 of
these schools are interested in getting
this DVD. Training is up this year
with about 100 more Basic Training
students than this time last year;
Experienced Rider course numbers
are up a little. Experienced Rider
courses will now be guaranteed even
with small numbers. The Minnesota
National Guard will be provided with
course training at no cost to the
National Guard.
Legislative Reports:
Mack discussed the D.C. trip this past
spring. A.B.A.T.E. lobbied for transportation safety money, $100,000 to
Minnesota. We had a large attendance
for the D.C. trip this year, with State
and Chapter money helping out.
There were 17 people total from a
variety of motorcycle safety/rights
groups in Minnesota. Also in May,
our good friend Governor Pawlenty
proclaimed May as “Motorcycle
Awareness Month.”
Director of Government Relations:
Workman spoke to why he does not
always submit a report to the Road
Noise; there is not always anything
new or anything to update. Workman
reviewed the transportation tax politics of the past. Workman is against
taxes going up just because taxes can
go up…it goes on and on. Legislators
are real nervous about this because
things like this get used against them
at the next election. Counties are
discussing “wheelage” taxes, too.
Workman did attend the Minnesota
Motorcycle Safety Advisory
Committee meeting in Duluth
although it did not have a quorum.
That group does seem more interested
in our Failure to Yield issue than in
the past. Workman is optimistic about
the group; new members will soon be
named.
Todd
presents
Charm and
Becky Road
Noise signed
by the
MRF Board
Members
for their
dedication to
the MRF.
MRF: Todd Riba gave a quick
update on the MRF which has a
Federal Advisory Council presence;
the Council is included in the TEULU, the great big transportation package. Motorcyclists have a presence at
the Federal level mainly dealing with
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.
highway design, bridge design, barriers
…to make sure motorcyclists are not
forgotten. Next in line is health insurance discrimination. On the House
side the Bill is HR1076, on the
Senate side S616, to promote health
care coverage parity for individuals
engaged in legal leisure activities or
legal transportation activities (involving motorcycles). Currently your
insurance company can deny you
payment for injuries that occur in a
motorcycle accident; it’s not real
common, but what we need to do is
close the loophole. EPA and the noise
issue is back! Part of the problem we
are starting to see came to us courtesy
of California Air Resource Board
(CARB) stiffened air quality regulations; bike builders (e.g. Jesse James ,
Arlen Ness and DynoJet) are being
fined a couple hundred thousand
dollars a piece for making motorcycles
that do not meet CARB standards.
CARB is now “ARB” the Air
Resource Board, which is offering
their resources and help to other
states. There’s a lot of chatter about
noise problems, e.g. Stillwater and
Denver. There are fines if you do not
have the EPA sticker on your pipes.
In Tulsa the mayor says they will pull
over all motorcycles as being “loud.”
The noise issue will be huge, handin-hand with the EPA issue. The MRF
will help us have a presence at the
Federal level. Riba encouraged
everyone to attend the Meeting of the
Minds in Cedar Rapids, in September
this year.
NCOM: Matt Collins announced that
the NCOM Conference is very
important. Have you seen the black
retreads? There is an investigation as
to how this can be prevented; EPA
and helmet laws are also being discussed. NCOM reviewed the “Failure
to Yield” bills that have passed and
they are generally lighter than what
we are trying to get. In Matt’s region,
he is hoping this coming fall or
spring there can be a complete
regional meeting, as there has not
been one for a couple of years. The
Conferences in May 2008 is in
Houston Texas.
State: Todd Riba gave a State update.
Todd talks to people from other states
and hears about their laws and what
they have to put up with, you start
to think “we got it pretty good in
Minnesota,” we have equal access for
bikers and we were the first motorcycle
www.abatemn.org
rights organization to get that passed.
About 95% of our endorsement fees
are invested back into motorcycling;
blue dots and ape hangers are now
okay due to us; some states use grant
money and TEU-LU money against
motorcyclists but it’s been used as a
positive for us. There are some states
(NE and MI) that use the money for
such things as training state troopers
to enforce helmet laws, which is not
what that money was intended to do.
We have it good in Minnesota, but
there is bad news. It is trendy to pick
on bikers and the helmet law right
now; perhaps we are the “Flavor of
the Month.” We live in a state where
manslaughter has been de-criminalized; we would like to see our legislation passed. What can we do? We can
stop fighting each other and start
fighting our enemies. We are working
with the St. Croix Valley Riders, we
have common ground. Within
A.B.A.T.E. we should stop fighting
each other; we spend too much time
and effort complaining about each
other instead of working together.
Seek out our elected officials, let them
know we are not going away; talk
about what is important to us whenever you get the chance; talk to your
Legislator, there should be no doubt
in Legislator’s minds as to how we
feel. Motorcycle noise ordinances are
being enforced in areas; we need to
start using common sense with loud
pipes; we need to know when to be
loud and when to quiet it down; we
need to police ourselves because if
we don’t someone else will.
Motorcycle PAC of Minnesota:
MPAC has been relatively quiet for
the first half of the year. At the time
of the report there is $7,033.11 in the
bank. Year to date we’ve taken in
$2,356.00 in contributions. In this
past quarter we’ve taken in $1,079 in
contributions. No expenses for this
quarter, year to date are relatively
simple such as purchasing rockers
and patches and sending Matt
(Collins) on the D.C. trip. The political fundraising activities are starting;
we have made contributions this
month along with the MRF to
fundraisers for Oberstar and Walz and
will look for other joint opportunities.
Several fundraisers will be coming
up. How can the A.B.A.T.E. Board
help with that? MPAC is notified
about some, but not all fundraisers
from around the state, Members
should contact Mark with information.
Frank Ernst announced Mary Berger,
Lake Chapter and Dawn Pickett,
North Star Chapter, earned Write to
Ride patches; also, a couple
Members from Buffalo Ridge and
South Central received either rockers
or patches, and Linda from
Flatlanders earned 2006 and 2007
rockers. Frank reiterated the importance
of staying in touch with Legislators.
If we want to be effective we have to
communicate.
Mack mentioned how much the little
pieces of the puzzle add up to the big
picture. Mack spoke on how helpful
the Governor has been to squelch
bashers and someone attacking our
position on the helmet laws; the guy’s
act has been toned down considerably,
he heard the voice from
above…much of this is because of
our communications and it all adds
up to us maintaining our right to ride
the way we want to.
Committee Reports:
A.B.A.T.E. U: Mack announced that
Noma Skinner is our new A.B.A.T.E.
University Chairperson. A.B.A.T.E. U
2008 is April 11th-13th at the
Holiday Inn in Alexandria.
Reservations can be made at (320)
763-6577. They would really like
to get some more help with the
Committee and they are trying to
move the meetings around to get
people from other Chapters to help.
District Directors and Chapter
Representatives, please go back to
your Chapters and find five things
they would like to see at A.B.A.T.E.
U; something new or something they
want to see back. Report back at the
October B.O.D.
Awards: Please contact Bill Gruhlke
or Mack if you wish to order awards
through this Committee.
Buddy Bears: Contact Mack or Barb
Ziegler with questions; Kim Ostlund
can explain how to pay for Buddy
Bears if a Chapter wants to use their
Gambling funds.
Editing: Jan Loft-Pilgrim distributed
new or edited pages for the Operation
and Procedure Manual.
Education: Paul Tjepkes thanked
Mississippi Valley for starting their
Share the Road programs, Buffalo
Ridge is really doing a super job,
Glacial Ridge is conducting quite a

few classes. If you are doing the
classes please send the counts to Paul
so we can keep an accurate account
on the number of classes and number
of students. If you know you are
doing a Share the Road program
please put it in your Grapevine or on
the Road Noise calendar of events or
Chapter calendars if you can. Mack
and Paul also mentioned that Rolling
Prairie also conducted some classes
lately. Jack Pine Riders have some
interest. Paul will help if asked or
you can go watch Paul do a class.
Kim presents Wendy Stieinborn, South
Central Chapter, the Most State Rally
Raffle Tickets Sold plaque. South Central
has the most years on the plaque.
Gambling: Kim Ostlund reported the
A.B.A.T.E. U raffle went very well
for the first time with five (5) bikes.
We sold 854 tickets for a profit,
before taxes, of $20,672.00. Kim was
able to pay back to the Chapters $10
each per ticket turned in on time. Top
three: Glacial Ridge first place with
155 tickets sold, Tri-County sold
84 tickets for second place and
Borderland with 82 tickets was third.
Rodney King of Glacial Ridge sold
130 tickets himself. The A.B.A.T.E.
U 2008 discussion is already underway. State Rally raffle is underway.
Mack made note that all Chapters
have a positive balance, that hasn’t
happened for awhile, so thanks to all
the Chapters for selling their tickets.
Historian: Mack noted they have
some recently discovered old materials that he will be giving to Cathy.
Membership and Retention: Al
Sandberg reported we have the
Algona counts; not all in yet but
perhaps 10% better than last year.
Al thanked A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa for
allowing us the have a booth down
there. Al acknowledged Michelle
Peterson was a co-chair and thanked
her for all of her coordination. Ken
Kalway worked all night, Al wanted
8
September 2007
to give Ken special thanks because
working that all night shift by yourself is not easy. Al thanked Kevin
Todd for taking care of all the
finances at Algona. Big numbers are
less important than us getting our
name “out there.” Al needs more help
on his Committee because he is trying
to cover the whole state. Al didn’t
have the exact total numbers but he
thinks we’re up 400-450 members
more than last year. Al would like a
list of who is in charge of memberships for each Chapter.
Publications: Becky Hasslen mentioned there is not a lot to report on
the website at this time. The
September issue is Charm’s last issue
as Editor of Road Noise. As of now
no one has shown any interest in
becoming Editor. Should we pay the
editor because it is a lot of work?
Proposal: That compensation be paid
to the Road Noise Committee to be
allocated amongst the Editor and
Editorial Assistants based on the
average number of hours each of
those positions require. They realize
that A.B.A.T.E. is a volunteer organization but they spend about 70 hours
a month. If they do not find a new
Editor we will have to hire an outside
agency which will cost a lot of
money and it may not be as fine a
publication as it is now. Mack noted
we will take the proposal under
advisement.
Mack shared with the group how
much effort and time Charm has
given to A.B.A.T.E. over the years
with her work on Road Noise.
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota honored
Charm with a plaque for her dedication in making Road Noise the best
motorcycle rights publication in the
nation! There was a standing ovation
as Charm received her plaque from
Mack. Charm thanked everyone for
the beautiful plaque and acknowledged that many people help with
Road Noise, so she felt a little guilty
having just her name on the award.
State Rally: Dale Steinborn reported
the bands are in place, things look
good. Our sponsorships are down
about $11,250 from last year at this
time. Read your program about the
rules! There will be some changes or
new rules regarding safety and other
issues.
Ways and Means: Mitch Backlund
reported all Chapter accounts are in
order. The Committee is losing a
couple members so they need to be
replaced. Quarterly meetings last
about an hour and a half.
Other Reports:
State Office: Liz Herzog reported
that things are going “crazy” but
going well. Liz had membership list
handouts, although did not have a
whole lot to report at this point other
than to say please bear with her, she
is new.
Products: Jane Jenson has only two
people to help in the Products booth
at the Rally; please volunteer. Jane
wanted to know if the Products book
is being used, she gets a lot of questions about things that are actually in
the book and she has not seen sales
increase from the catalog.
Dial-A-Ride: Ron Lischeid needs to
know where the Dial-A-Ride materials were distributed. We made a deal
and agreed to submit the distribution
information for the continued funding
from the Minnesota Safety Advisory
Council. By the November meeting
we need to get a complete list of all
the pickups and interventions during
the season. If we continue to do these
things we should have a stable funding source for years to come for
materials to promote the program. On
the intervention report nothing more
than a first name is required, along
with the intervention date and a brief
description of what might have happened and what you did to prevent
someone from making a mistake.
Check the website for email addresses.
Motorcycle Safety Advisory
Committee: Several A.B.A.T.E.
members submitted applications to
serve on the Minnesota Motorcycle
Safety Advisory Committee, it’s
important to get A.B.A.T.E. members
on that committee. They would have
voted on new members at last
Thursday’s meeting but couldn’t vote
due to lack of quorum. Mike Berger
has been nominated as the Vice-Chair
of the Committee.
July BOD meeting.
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Inc.
Patriot Guard Riders: Kevin Todd
reported there are lots of troops
coming home right now; the Patriot
Guard Riders are running an average
of about four missions a day, but the
majority are welcome home gatherings
for the troops. You do not have to be
on a motorcycle to join the Patriot
Guard; just believe in what they are
doing.
Coalition of Clubs: Jane Jenson
reported on the St. Joseph run; copies
of the KARE 11 report were distributed. There was considerable
discussion, details and examples of
what happened on the targeted run
and what was not included in the
media reports. We need to be aware
of these things and do what we can to
help alleviate the situations. This is
what our discrimination laws we
helped pass in Minnesota were
intended to fight.
Old Business: None.
New Business:
New Chapter Proposal: Mack gave
the history of how people from the
Parkers Prairie area contacted Mack
and wanted to know how to start a
Chapter. Wolf came forward to
explain the history of the Chapter,
how they went about collecting new
memberships, not members from
other Chapters that would transfer.
They should have about 80 new
members by the State Rally. What
they want to do is what everyone else
in A.B.A.T.E. is doing and that is to
protect our rights. It was moved and
seconded to accept the new Chapter.
The motion passed. There was a big
round of applause for the representatives of the new Chapter, “Freedom
First Riders!”
Mitch Backlund shared with the
Board copies of the form she had
received from the insurance agent.
Ninety-five percent of the time we
are using Erickson and Larson for
event insurance. This insurance is
needed whenever you are charging
the public. Mitch thought this would
be something handy to have in the
Manual. Mack asked for a motion,
motion passed.
Frank Ernst has information that he
believes to be valid that “stops” could
happen during the first five days of
August down on I-90, across Martin
County, in the exits 87 to 107 along
I-90. If anyone is stopped in that area
or know people that are please collect
www.abatemn.org
this data: what agent or agencies are
making the stop, the officer’s
name(s), and their badge number(s),
date and time of the stop, duration of
the stop. Also, you should be able to
ask why you are being stopped. Did
they search you, photograph you, did
they note any identifying marks on
your body, did they take pictures of
tattoos, anything like that? Did you
get a citation, did you get arrested,
keep track of any witnesses you
might have. If they get physical or
confrontational, we need to know.
There is a Minnesota State Supreme
Court ruling against these arbitrary
stops, these stops will probably be in
violation of that ruling and we want
to address them.
Mack shared that one of A.B.A.T.E.’s
good friends; Bob Illingworth, will be
inducted into the Sturgis Hall of
Fame in August. Bob fought his tail
off for motorcycle rights when
probably most of us didn’t even have
a license.
Office Reports:
State Treasurer: Michelle said
things are going pretty good; she is
starting to see a lot more “donations”
in reports. Make sure you are doing
this properly, do not let these people
think these donations are tax
deductible. Donations to A.B.A.T.E.
of Minnesota are not tax deductible.
State Secretary: Jan Loft-Pilgrim
reported that for the most part
Chapters are submitting their minutes
in a timely manner; a few Chapters
are having some problems. Remind
Secretaries to include the date,
location of meeting, also the name of
the Chapter.
Southwest District Director: Val
VanderWeyst stated overall Chapters
seem back on track and things are
going pretty well. All Chapters seem
to have the same problem; Chapters
are doing things without a whole lot
of help or volunteers. This room is
filled with the “over active” members
and we need to see if it can’t trickle
down and get more active members.
Mack thanked to Cindy from the
Benson Bowler for her efforts and
taking such good care of us.
Northwest District Director: Rob
Thiel reported his Chapters are doing
well; A couple Chapters are missing
today but they have good excuses as
they are welcoming home and escorting returning soldiers. Rob thanked
those who put together the new
Chapter “The Freedom First Riders.”
Welcome to them and thanks for their
hard work. Rob distributed materials
regarding the October B.O.D. at the
Sportsman Lodge in Baudette.
Borderland will be hosting.
Southeast District Director: Donna
Aarsvold-Larish said there are some
Chapters in her District with a few
little problems now and then; overall,
things going well and keep up the
good work.
Northeast District Director: Matt
Collins reported that Chapters are
doing pretty well. “Biker Friendly”
parking in St. Paul and Minneapolis?
It was asked if motorcyclists can be
there when the councilman presents
the proposal. When Matt is notified
as to the meeting date he will pass
along the information to people.
Assistant State Coordinator: Kevin
Todd said, “Active members, active
members, active members, active
members. Here’s a little challenge:
Be as active as I am.”
State Coordinator: Mack spoke to
how to fit together the jig-saw puzzle
and how to educate ourselves and
educate others. “Meeting of the
Minds” is coming up in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. We need to get there so
we have the tools, the knowledge to
protect our rights, learn the tools for
dealing with the opposition. They are
coming at us with negative information and it won’t be long before the
legislation will follow. When
America was formed it was an exercise in self government and it was
predicted it wouldn’t work. It’s the
same with A.B.A.T.E., no dictator is
needed, it’s people working together
in a self-governed organization. We
need to find a way to get over petty
differences, leave alone things that
don’t make a difference, let them
blow in the wind. If you take anything away from here today, Mack
hoped people would take that. Mack
thanked everyone for coming to the
meeting and for their dedication.
Thank you for your effort and being a
member of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota.
Chapter Announcements:
Chapter Representatives shared the
activities and events involving their
Chapter.

meeting was adjourned at 1:50 pm. ■

Next meeting: Sunday, September 30th, the Ugly Bar,
Montrose, 1:00 pm
Hard to believe that by the time this comes out another
Sturgis Rally will have come and gone and the State Rally
will be here.
The Committee is losing a couple of members, so we
could use some new folks to replace them.
The Committee will meet Sunday, September 30th at the
Ugly Bar in Montrose at 1:00 pm. The meetings typically
last about 1 1/2 hours, so we’re not talking an all day
commitment. Hope to see a few of ya there.

Hi all! Wow, I can’t believe how the summer has flown
by! At the last A.B.A.T.E. U Committee meeting there
were six of us; unfortunately only two were actually
Committee members. The others, while I thank you for
coming, were there as Chapter Reps. Realistically, it’s not
too early to start planning for next April, and again, I’m
begging for help. The dates are set, April 11th-13th, 2008.
Reservations can be made now, Holiday Inn, Alexandria,
(320) 763-6577. If you have ideas or suggestions please
call or email. This coming A.B.A.T.E. U will not be the
same ole, same ole…we are gonna shake it up a little! If
you don’t give us input, the two of us on the Committee
along with the Reps attending A.B.A.T.E. U meetings will
have to make all of the decisions, so talk to me!
September meeting is at Hawk’s in Monticello, September

LEGISLATIVE REPORT
Todd Riba (952) 368-3090
[email protected]
A few weeks back I had a rather animated discussion with
two A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota members who were very
unhappy with our organization, and after our little talk I
am sure they are even more unhappy. The argument can be
made that I don’t always have the most tact and sometimes my passion for this movement gets the best of me.
Like a lot of our members I put in a significant amount of
time and effort and I ask for nothing in return, so sometimes it’s hard to listen to people criticize the movement.
Let’s face it; most times it just flat out pisses me off.
That’s not all bad, but sometimes that kind of attitude can
10
September 2007
cloud our vision of what is best for our movement. The
problem with this kind of criticism is that the solution to
fix the problem is often left in the hands of a small group
of overworked volunteers. So I guess what I’m trying to
say is, if you think it’s broke then help fix it.
The trouble is that usually doesn’t happen. What does
happen is people throw their hands up and quit. There is
no doubt about it; A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota is not perfect.
We oftentimes fall short of people’s expectations, but what
most people tend to forget is all the good we do and the
victories we have achieved. If every member worked just
a little harder and fought just a little more we would be a
lot closer to perfect. Riders in Minnesota have more
freedom than most of our brothers and sisters around the
country, our motorcycle rights movement in this great
state must be doing something right.
One of the things we do right is talk to our politicians.
We have many members that work hard to foster positive
relationships with our elected officials; there are many
examples of this hard work. A few years back, Becky
Hasslen and Karen May, Lake Chapter members, got
involved in State Senator Amy Koch’s first election by
helping out with her campaign. This small effort was
repaid when the newly elected Senator invited Lake
Chapter to a wine and cheese get together. Now wine and
cheese isn’t exactly my kind of deal, but it was kind of fun
to get a chance to meet the Senator’s family, friends, and
supporters. Since that time Senator Koch has asked us to
ride in a couple of parades and she has attended some of
our meetings and events. Our visits with Senator Koch at
Bikerday have always been very positive. At our
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota Board of Directors meeting in
Benson we had State Senator Kubly open the meeting.
Senator Kubly is an A.B.A.T.E. member and there are a
number of members in western Minnesota who have
worked hard to foster that relationship. One of our greatest
achievements is the relationship that we have built with
Congressman Oberstar. He is the U.S. House of
Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee Chair; that makes him a very important man in
our world. Our visits with him and his staff have been
great; we are always welcome in that office. A.B.A.T.E.
isn’t the only organization that has helped build this relationship, the St. Croix Valley Riders and the Motorcycle
Riders Foundation have been a tremendous help as well.
All of this hard work has paid off big time. We need to
keep it up. I know this political stuff is dry as toast, but
our involvement in the process will help protect our freedom of the road. As I said before, we have a lot of rights
on the road that many don’t have, we have this freedom
because a lot of people have cared enough to fight through
the difficult times and stick with the movement. Bob
Illingworth is one of those freedom fighters. Bob was the
driving force in getting rid of the lid law back in the 70’s
and he was recently inducted into the Sturgis Hall of
Fame. Bob was a major presence down at the State
Capitol. He didn’t care how boring it was and he didn’t
quit and take his toys and go home when things didn’t go
his way. I think we all owe it to freedom fighters like Bob
to stay involved no matter how unhappy we get.

Greetings!
Next meetings: Sunday, September 2nd at the
Rally in Litchfield.
September 22nd, Renegades, Savage, 2:00 pm
October 13th, Midtown Tavern, Mankato
We all benefit from education in one form or another.
Whether it be in our work, to better ourselves, or by
passing on the knowledge we have learned so others may
become more informed about a subject.
As an educator you can make a difference in hundreds of
young lives. You have the ability to become that teacher
once you realize that you have something very important
to say. People will listen to experts in any given field.
Guess what? We have one great organization made up of
motorcycle experts; A.B.A.T.E. OF MINNESOTA! When
we speak about motorcycle rights, people listen; the same
goes for education. So, what’s the big problem? Get out
and educate, pass on your knowledge.
Trust me; I know those young minds will absorb all you
have to say because you believe in what you are saying!!!!
Hope to see all of you at the State Rally.
Til next time, educate!

A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota is a dynamic, changing organization and because of that it is necessary to update and edit
pages in our Operation and Procedure Manual. It may
seem like a hassle to keep the Manual current and accurate,
but that is better than A.B.A.T.E. becoming stagnant and
unorganized. At the July B.O.D., Representatives and others who maintain a Manual were given updated pages for
the State Office, State Officers and Contacts, the Chapter
Charter, and the Historian page. At the October B.O.D. we
will distribute a new page for the Manual which will be a
copy of the insurance rider that all Chapters should use
when requesting insurance for events. Also, there will be a
new page explaining the guidelines and process for
requesting Gambling funds for lawful purpose. These
types of things are easy reference, to help Chapters operate lawfully and smoothly. There will soon be a new page
listing the officers of our new Chapter, “Freedom First
Riders.” Also, plan ahead if you will be writing and
proposing any by-law changes at the January B.O.D., or if
you want something added or changed in the Manual. I
will gladly help, if asked, but I can’t do a decent job when
asked to help just a few days before you want it done. See
you at the State Rally!

I hope every one has enjoyed the riding season and I hope
you all make it to the A.B.A.T.E. Rally safely.
Well, we have been running for over five months now
(when you read this) and we have had a couple of calls
and I want to thank the ones that helped out with them. If
you did an intervention please let us know, we do keep
track of it. I hope that all of you have gotten out and
enjoyed some of the nice weather that we have been having.
Remember, Dial-A-Ride is here to make the season safer.
If you need us we are there; just call, it’s free.
Chapter Reps, be sure to let us know which establishments
you delivered the boxes to. We need to keep track of it.
You can contact us at 1 (888) 342-5743 or through our
website listed above.
It is getting to be that time of year when we think of
United Way. Remember, you can have your contributions
go to Dial-A-Ride. We are a 501 (C)3 organization (non
profit) and any organization with gambling account funds
can make a charitable donation to Dial-A-Ride. If you
have any ideas that you think might make us better, come
to one of our meetings and let us know. Everyone is
welcome to sit in.
Remember, “Throttles and Bottles don’t mix.
Till next month, ride safe, don’t be afraid to use us if you
need to, that’s why we are here.

If you choose to give through the United Way, you can write in
Minnesota Motorcycle DIAL-A-RIDE as the designation

number, so that is why we need to have the address listed.
The United Way sends out the donated monies each quarter
through the year. Please let your fellow bikers know that they
can contribute through the United Way and their contributions
are tax deductible. McDAR is committed to using the funds for
printing our informational literature, the bar napkins, bar

Wow!!! It seems like a long time since Algona has come
and gone, but I sure have been busy! I look back to
Algona weekend thinking that I would never get done
entering memberships after I counted them all, but I was
amazed at how fast it went. We had a super year this year,
thanks to ALL of the Minnesota members who participated
in working the membership tables. Without you we would
have been approximately 800 members (new and renewal)
less than we are now. This goes to show that we ALL need
to step up to the plate and give a little time to fighting for
what we want. If everyone gave a little, then no one would
have to give a lot to save our rights!!!!!
Hello Everyone!
As I write this, I am preparing for another trip on the bike.
The summer is going so fast. I hope everyone is enjoying
the warm weather and lots of riding.
We have available a 60 x 60" knit blanket with the
A.B.A.T.E. logo. These are typically a special order item;
however I have ordered a few to have on hand. I have
ordered more of the 22 oz. insulated mugs; they should be
here any day…Don’t forget about our 20 year A.B.A.T.E.
patches, belt buckles, travel mugs, fleece blankets, duffle
bags, stuffed dogs, and clothing! Talk to your Chapter
products person for a complete list of everything we have
in stock. Starting next month, I will try to submit pictures
of some of the items we carry.
I hope to see you on the road…
Jane
You might not think that you make a difference. That’s
what I thought when I first started in A.B.A.T.E. But when
I decided to become an active member I decided to give
my all. That is what counts! And you know what? IT
ISN’T THAT HARD!!! I have learned so much about
legislation and what I can do as a single person. I have
realized that MY DEDICATION COUNTS!
There may be grumbles and gripes, but if you keep on the
right track about WHAT YOU WANT and you present it
in a way that other people can relate to, then you are on
the right track. Don’t give up! Keep fighting! If you don’t,
who will? I can guarantee you, no one. If you have any
questions about how to get involved CALL ME! I can
hook you up with someone in your area to talk to, or I can
also connect you with someone higher up to listen to you.
But I can’t do this without your help. If I am not available,
leave a message with your name, phone number, or e-mail
address. I will return your call!
As for the little things, if I can help you out, you can help
me out also:
1. If you leave a voice mail message, please speak clearly.
2. Always tell me what Chapter you are with.
3. If you have not received your membership card, please
tell me when you sent in your request for new or renewal.
4. If you are or have separated from a spouse or primary
card holder, please let me know what the primary card
holder’s name is (this way I can search in my database
to make sure I have the correct name). I will also need
to know a current address and phone number for you.
5. If sending me an email ([email protected]) all of
the above apply.
Until next month…

To all from the road,
The past few months I have heard about people being
stopped on runs and other things. The gang task force is
pushing hard on these things and it doesn’t matter if you
are a patch holder or not! They have stopped A.B.A.T.E.
members, patch holders, and the public. So it doesn’t
matter who you are: THEY WILL STOP YOU!
So when this happens, watch what you say and do, take
the ticket, get all the info you can on the officer and
department, and we will fight later. We need to stick
together on all fronts of the biker rights and freedom.

Friday, October 19th, Sportsman’s Lodge, Baudette, 7:00 pm
Saturday, November 17th, later afternoon at South

recall right off the top of my head the details. They will
follow.
Optimistic, according to dictionary.com, means “disposed
to take a favorable view of events or conditions and to
expect the most favorable outcome.” I’m optimistic my
original (and not so optimistic) prediction that this drought
would end on August 31st was wrong and that if you’re
reading this issue of Road Noise at the State Rally, you’re
reading it under warm and sunny skies! I’m optimistic that
our current drought in Bike of the Month, Business of the
Month, and Honor Guard submissions will soon end. And
I’m optimistic that, while we still don’t have a new Editor
to replace Charm (as of this writing), we will find one in
plenty of time to publish next month’s issue. We have had
inquiries from a couple of interested individuals, which is
more than we had a month ago. After all, it’s not like
we’re asking for a lifetime commitment; if you don’t like
the job or it doesn’t work out, all you have to do is give us
five years notice and we’ll find someone else. (I’m also
optimistic that you’ll all realize that’s a joke-we really
would only need three or four years notice! Well, ok, a
couple of months.)
Now to move on to more important business. I’d like to
take this opportunity to offer Charm and Gene Bolgrean
my heartfelt thanks for their dedication and commitment
to making this publication the best MRO newsletter in the
nation. As you may recall, Charm stepped in when we
needed an Editor back in June, 2002 with little or no experience using a Macintosh computer, with Quark Express,
or with the publishing business. And coincidentally, Gene
stepped in as our Proofreader at about the same time.
Hmmm, funny how that worked out! And every issue
since then has gotten better and better. Besides being two
of my favorite “partners in crime” on this Committee,
Charm and Gene are two of my best friends. We’ve been
through a lot together and I’m happy for both of them that
they’re finally taking a well deserved break. Although I
have to say, knowing them both as well as I do, I’m sure it
won’t be long before they’re making their mark on some
other Committee, or project, or both to the great benefit of
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota.
Thank you, Charm and Gene, from the bottom of my
heart. I am going to sorely miss your contributions to
Road Noise, as will everyone on the Publications
Committee and in this organization.
Til next time (and I’m optimistic that there will be a next
time),

Well, not much going on in the gambling world at the time
this article is due. I hope that everyone enjoyed the Rally
and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the
folks who helped sell the remaining raffle tickets at the
Rally. Next month I will have a list of the Rally raffle
winners. Congratulations to all of those folks. I sure hope
that all Chapters got their sold tickets turned in by the
deadline. Remember, there is a traveling trophy that will
be awarded at the October B.O.D. to the Chapter that sold
the most tickets. It will be a brand new plaque. Wouldn’t it
be cool to be the first Chapter on it?
I would like to also take this opportunity to remind everyone that even though the Rally raffle may be over, if you
come across tickets and/or money after the fact, I need
everything mailed to me. By gambling control board
guidelines, all tickets sold and unsold are supposed to be
accounted for prior to any drawings. I know that sometimes things can get misplaced before the drawing and
found later. It’s happened to me. And of course our first
instinct is to return the money to the folks that didn’t make
it in the drawing. DON’T DO THAT! Mailing ticket stubs
to me without the money to go with them does our organization no good. In the eyes of the gambling control
board, missing tickets means missing money–stealing!
I know this may sound harsh, but it’s the reality of all the
guidelines that we need to follow in order to continue to
have these raffles and do charitable gambling. So please
remember that when tickets are being signed out I am
holding the person that signs them out accountable for
them. When we are audited, if there is a problem with
missing tickets our Committee will have no choice but to
come back to the Chapter for the missing money.
This is a really big deal, please treat it as such!
Our Committee has started to formulate plans for the
A.B.A.T.E. U 2008 raffle. We are out seeking bids on five
motorcycles again, and are planning on printing 1000
tickets. If you have any opinions on this raffle, now would
be a good time to start coming to our meetings. As you
can see, we try to hold them in conjunction with other
events in hopes of getting some new faces.
Well, that’s all for now. Please get out there and support
your other Chapter functions and raffles. Currently Glacial
Ridge has a raffle going on that they will be holding at the
State Rally, and Tri-County will be having their raffle after
their Chapter meeting on October 9th in Savage.

As of this writing the Rally is only three weeks away, I
know you’ll either be reading this at the Rally or shortly
after you get home. If you made it to the Rally, thank you
for coming to A.B.A.T.E.’s biggest fundraiser of the year.
The Rally Committee worked very hard all year long to
make this the best and biggest event ever, but I’m sure we
will have or did have a few surprises; we always do.
Hopefully this year we won’t have any rain or tornados.
Upon writing this, the Rally is about three weeks away. I’d
like to take this time to thank everyone who signed up and
worked a four hour shift for Front Gate, Security, or First
Aid; every one of you needs to be commended. Your
welcoming smile is the first thing our visitors see when
they enter the gate, and your wave and “See you next
year” when they leave is what they remember. I heard so
many comments last year on how friendly and welcoming
our Front Gate staff is, I’m sure this year will be no
exception. So “Thank You” in advance for your smiles,
patience, and time while playing with us at the Front Gate
or while we were doing Security or First Aid.
Reminder to all Chapters, we need your help in procuring
items to give away in the drawing for all volunteers who
helped at the Rally, Please go out and obtain items from
your areas. All items need to be handed in to Audra Koel
Friday night at the October B.O.D.

We have had a great response to our “Rally Sponsorship
Program” again this year. Numbers may be down a little
from last year, but with the rising cost of everything I still
think we did fine. Please check out all the names of our
Sponsors and stop by their places of business and say
“Thank you” every time you go in. We hope their participation in the program will yield them many rewards.
We’ve also had a lot of interest from Vendors. Please stop
by and check out each and every one of them, support
those who support us. If Sponsor and Vendor participation
are any indication of attendance, then may God grant us
good weather and we’re in for hopefully a good year!
To the Rally Board, Sub-Committee Chairs, and members
of the Rally Committee, Thank You for all you’ve done.
It’s a privilege and honor to know and work with each and
every one of you. Those of you who will be or have
worked at the Rally, and each of you who took the time to
approach Sponsors, round up auction items and door
prizes, put up posters, sell Rally Advance or Raffle tickets,
invited friends and neighbors, or simply came and participated, I would like to say Thank You. Without you we
would not have been able to achieve our goal.
We hope that this year’s Rally gave you one more reason
to have great pride in being a part of A.B.A.T.E. of
Minnesota. We look for more of you to come and get
involved with us and share your time and talents. We all
just work hard with a positive attitude and smile, and
believe we can or will make a difference.
Whatever observances or opinions this year’s Rally left
you with, please relay them to the Rally Committee
directly, through our website, or to your Chapter or State
officers. We would like your view of what you experienced
or how we can make the Rally bigger and better. Our
Rally is the greatest public relations tool we have and we
want it to be the best and most effective it can be.
Thank you everyone.

be approximately 100 miles through scenic countryside,
with three stops along the way. I’d like to thank all the

this would not have been possible. Please join us on the

Congratulations to our newest Chapter, “Freedom First
Riders.” They are a motivated bunch of people from in
and around the Parker’s Prairie area. Being around a group
this excited is refreshing; they jumped in with both feet
and have gotten dozens and dozens of new members to
sign up and be an active part of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota.
Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this all
happen. Welcome all and thanks to all the new members
who joined too. Without you this great organization
wouldn’t exist.
This month I would like to discuss “Focus.” I just want to
remind everyone in A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota what we are
here for. The official summary is in the beginning of the
“Road Noise” on page 4, under the caption “Dear fellow
motorcyclists.” From time to time I have to go back and
read this section and remind myself why we are here. It’s
very well written and I suggest you go back and read it
and take the time to really absorb what it says, it really
helps. Here is my condensed version; we are a motorcycle
rights and safety organization. That is what is most important. Now there are a lot of other things that A.B.A.T.E.
does that are very important in different ways. But our
focus needs to be on Motorcycle Rights and Safety. So
every time I have a decision to make for A.B.A.T.E., I
think about how it helps our cause of “Motorcycle Rights
and Safety.” Does it directly affect it, like lobbying and
voting? Does it indirectly affect it, like membership count
and treasury balances? Is it good for the organization as a
whole, like public image and camaraderie? Or is it rather
unimportant, like what color the flyer for my event is or if
“Robert’s Rules of Order” are followed to the letter? My
point is that it is easy to get caught up in the little things
that bother us, But there are hundreds, possibly thousands
of people out there trying VERY hard to take away your
rights every day! The more friends I encourage to pay
attention to the political process and be aware of what is
happening, the more I hear how it pisses them off! And
they wish I never got them involved (I guess ignorance
really is bliss). Well there is only one good way to deal
with that anger, and that is to do something about it. Their
anger comes from a feeling of helplessness and not knowing what to do. I know, I feel it almost every day, and they
are not alone. I don’t know what to do every time either.
But that is one thing that we do have in A.B.A.T.E.; a
great bunch of people that do know what to do. We just
have to ask them. I do it all the time. Believe it or not, you
really can bring about change within our government. The
process is slow and painstaking at times, but it really does
work. You just have to want it bad enough and be willing
to do whatever it takes to make it happen.
Life is ours,
Rob

The last meeting was on August 11th at Griz’s, following
the Laporte Fire Department’s open house grill. The meeting included an invite for the annual BSU Shriner’s parade
participation on September 7th and 8th. A hog roast and
street party Friday will be at the Garden Pub & Grill.
Parade lineup is at 10:00 am Saturday, with a BBQ and
Social hour before the football game (on the house) for all
participants. Also, there is a community bike run on
September 22nd to benefit local non-profit organizations.
It is a 100 mile cruise during the expected fall color peak.
Registration is $30 and $25 for passengers. This will
include a silent auction, bike show, and music. Also a
lunch during the ride. Other noteworthy local biker news
was on the front page of the Friday, August 10th local
paper. Carl Hunt of Turtle River created the most
exquisite, all-wood carved HD 45 Panhead. Cool...Hope
all who were able to attend this year’s Sturgis Rally had a

Exciting news Freedom First Riders, as of 1:00 pm
Saturday, July 21st we officially became a Chapter of
A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota. The Board of Directors voted us
in as the 26th Chapter during the B.O.D. meeting held in
Benson. HURRAH!!!! *A special thanks go out to the
entire B.O.D. for their vote of confidence in the Freedom
First Riders as a new Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. We would
also like to thank Mack and Frank for their confidence,
support, advice and the extra time they spent guiding us in
the right direction as how to start a new A.B.A.T.E.
Chapter.
A lot of very hard work went into the development of this
new Chapter and everyone involved should feel proud. I
guess that would include every member of the Freedom
First Riders, 100 members and growing. If it weren’t
for your memberships we wouldn’t exist. Now we need
your continued commitment, support, and voice in our
upcoming meetings to make this Chapter interesting,
exciting, and successful.
Well, now where do I start? This article will be for the
September issue of the Road Noise and we had a few
happenings since our June 24th membership drive
meeting. Here are a few:
July 13th and 14th Jack Pine Riders had their 2nd Annual
Upper Kettle River Shakedown (now that’s a mouth full),
it was reported to me by a fellow Freedom First Rider that
this annual event was a lot of fun and one we should all
try to attend next year. Great job Jack Pine Riders.
July 14th was Pete’s County Markets 1st Annual Hog
Wild Fest, American Cancer Run. We had 100+ Riders
register and the run went very well. Thank you to all who
participated, thank you Alexandria Police Department,
thank you road guards, thank you Jim and crew from the
Old Mill, and thank you Neil, Bob, and Mark from Pete’s
County Market for their hard work and great food.
July 28th at 6:30 pm Freedom First Riders had their first
meeting as an official A.B.A.T.E. Chapter, held at the Old
Mill, Urbank. We sure had a nice Chapter turnout for this
16
September 2007
meeting. Thanks everyone for your active support. We also
had our first group picture.
July 28th Chris and Jen tied the knot (Congratulations!!!)
The Freedom Free Riders were invited to enjoy the knot
tying as well as two hogs, two bands, beer, more beer and
a great time by all. I heard Harmless Howie’s Homemade
Apple Pie made its rounds also, Nummy!!!
August 6th to 12th, was the 67th Annual Sturgis Rally; I
couldn’t go this year but I am sure that all of you who
went have some interesting stories and pictures to share.
August 31st to September 3rd was the A.B.A.T.E of
Minnesota 19th Annual State Rally at the Meeker County
Fairgrounds, Litchfield. Freedom First Riders were
represented here by a few hard working individuals. If you
didn’t attend this year you missed out on a great time, be
sure to add this event to your next year plans.
I feel I am getting a little too wordy now, so I am going to
close with this thought: “It’s really all up to each and
everyone of you Freedom First Riders to show your
support, by coming to the meetings, bringing in new members, participating in the meetings, and sharing your ideas;
all this will make us a successful and interesting Chapter.”

Hello Borderland!
I hope you’re reading this at the Rally, and I hope the
pages aren’t getting wet. Have you heard? We have a new
Chapter in the Northwest District. They call themselves
the Freedom First Riders Chapter. Kinda cool seeing them
in front of the Board, asking for their Charter and expressing their want to fight for motorcycle rights in Minnesota.
Let’s support their first fundraiser and make sure we say hi
to their Chapter Rep in October. As you know, we are
hosting the October B.O.D. This is a good opportunity for
us to see how A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota works, and to meet
people on the State level who give so much to A.B.A.T.E.

It’s really awesome to see our involvement in the Patriot

President, Mike Ness.
“Many thanks to members of Borderland A.B.A.T.E. that

Thirty nine soldiers of the Bravo Co. 2nd combined arms

SOUTHWEST DISTRICT DIRECTOR
Val VanderWeyst (320) 843-4777
[email protected]
Next Southwest District Meeting will be hosted by the
Southwest Chapter on September 15th, at the Grain
Exchange in Slayton.
Hello to all the Members of the Southwest District!
I hope to see someone from every Chapter at this meeting.
Hard to believe that it is September already, where did the
summer go? With September we celebrate Labor Day, to
us that means State Rally time. Some of you may be
reading your Road Noise at the State Rally, have you
volunteered to help out yet? If not there is still time to do
so. Labor Day, the holiday of the workingman/woman. It
grew out of a celebration in honor of the working class in
1882 in New York. In the late 1880’s, labor organizations
began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of
Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to
declare it a state holiday were in 1887, which is 120 years
ago!! Interesting that there was lobbying of the state legislature back in the 1880’s and we are still doing the same
type of thing today. Just goes to prove that the laws we
lobby for today could be affecting generations of riders
over 100 years from now. Isn’t it wonderful to think that
in 100 years, members of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota could
still be the leading Freedom Fighters in motorcycle rights
in the Nation?! By getting involved in A.B.A.T.E. we will
ensure our success in the future. At the July Board
Meeting I heard of people in A.B.A.T.E. being called
“over achievers.” I had not heard that saying before, but in
thinking it over it is so true. There are people in
A.B.A.T.E. who put everything into it; their heart, soul,
money, and their beliefs in grassroots rights and freedoms.
One of those “over achievers” is retiring her position with
A.B.A.T.E. on September 1st. That person is Charm
Bolgrean, Road Noise Editor. Charm has been this
fabulous publication’s Editor for five years, now that is
dedication! Charm has given thousands of hours of her
time to give us the best Motorcycle Rights publication in
the nation. I know she will be at the State Rally, please
make a point to tell her “Thank You” for all that she has
given us! She told me that she is going to stay active in
A.B.A.T.E. “because there are lots of things to do!” Now
there is a goal for those of you who read this: Join the
ranks of the “over achievers” in A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota!
I nominate Charm as President of the “Over Achievers
Members Club” of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota! From me to
you, Charm, THANK YOU!
Till next we meet again, be safe.

Thanks to Becky for providing a meeting place last month
and a great toast to Steve on his birthday. It was a fun day.
Maybe a little hot, but it is summer so enjoy it! At the
meeting we discussed the Dial-A-Ride program, the need
for a Lake Chapter Share the Road presenter, and that
nominations for the Steve Award are now being accepted.
All nominations should be sent to Mike Berger by the
October meeting, be 250 words or less, and cannot include
any current Chapter Officers. Mike and Rosa won the
tickets to attend the Meeting of the Minds conference this
month. If you would like to join us, contact a Chapter
Officer for more information. The Special Events
Committee has been hard at work. The Fall Dart Run will
of course be a good one and tickets are now available for
the 2008 Grounded Hogs Fundraiser. Only $10 in advance
and there will be two bands. So make sure to get your
tickets. The Medina will be rocking that night. Dan Smith
memorial patches are now available, just come to a
meeting to get yours. Well, I’m off to pack for Sturgis for

BUFFALO RIDGE
Next Meetings: September 1st, Buffalo Ridge campsite,
State Rally, Litchfield, MN. 1:00 pm
October 6th, Lyndwood Bar, Lynd. Time will be in the
next Road Noise; we have ditch clean up and meeting,
also 20 year party
Upcoming events: October 6th, Buffalo Ridge 20 year
Anniversary party, Lyndwood Bar, Lynd
I will let you know the times for the October 6th meeting,
ditch clean-up, and party in the next Road Noise. I hope
that everyone who went to the Sturgis Rally had a great
time. The group I rode out with left Monday morning at
6:30 am from Lake Benton in the fog. We rode through
rain west of Huron for about 50 miles, and then the sun
came out for the rest of the day. We were able to stay at a
friend’s cabin up in the Deadwood area, south on 385 by
the Boondocks’ stop.
On Tuesday we rode to Sturgis and signed in at the Rally
headquarters on Main Street. Then it was on to Thunder
Road where I saw Eddie Trodda. I was also able to talk to
one of my son’s favorite bike builders, Russell Mitchell,
from Excel Motorcycles. Then we battled the wind on the
way to Rapid City, where we spent the rest of the day at
the Civic Center looking at the new Harley Davidson’s.
Willie G and his wife showed up to sign autographs. I was
disappointed that the demo rides were shut down early
because of bad weather coming in.
Wednesday we rode to Hewlett, WY to have breakfast and
to buy a shirt. Then it was off to a neat little town of
Rockford, SD. About three miles from Rockford, I saw
Arlen Ness and some of the other Hamsters. They were in
town having a burnout contest in front of the bar. It sure
was fun to watch and see all the custom bikes. Tony Dunn
led us on a shortcut to Hill City, which consisted of 16
miles of gravel. Thank goodness for the bikini bike wash
at the bar in town. Our bikes were not looking too pretty
from the rain and the gravel. At least we could watch the
girls wash our bikes while we had a beer. The money for
the bike wash went to the Boy’s Club of America (thank
you, girls, for assisting in this wonderful cause). With the
bike clean we had a nice ride on a tar road back to the
cabin.
Thursday we packed up and rode home. By the time I got
to Brookings my butt was numb. I guess that’s a small
price to pay for having a safe and fun time with your
friends. Thank you Tony, Baatzy, Will, and Heidi. I can’t
wait to go again next year.
Always see the full picture when you’re riding,

CHANGE
Hello All~
We had another short and sweet meeting this month. The
only thing I really have to report is that the November
meeting has been moved up one week due to hunting
opener. We will be having a Spooky Halloween meeting
on October 27th. The meeting will start at 6:00 pm as
usual at Rooney’s.
Some of you may know by now that I have recently
purchased a different bike. My sweet Cherrie will ride no
more...the break down on 94 going to July’s meeting was
her last. I have fond memories of her and I can’t thank
Vonnie enough for the opportunity she gave me. Alas, my
new love is a 1984 Honda Shadow. Our first date was a bit
tense, as we had to learn each other’s movements, but now
we seem to have our rhythm timed just right.
I do hate to disappoint my adoring fans, but this month’s
blithering will be kept to a minimum...there is a bike
parked in the driveway and a road that beckons me to
explore its curves.
I hope to see you all at the State Rally or maybe by the
time you get this I will be happy to have seen you there.
Anyway…until next time…

It is State Rally time and I hope that a majority of our
members have come to Litchfield to enjoy the festivities. I
am sure that we will be entertained by many of our members (I hope our President will do her magic trick for us)!
Remember that we have our meeting on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
Our Fall Run is set for September 15th at Buckshots Bar
in Butterfield. Please be there at 11:00 am to sign up for
the run. We plan to leave promptly at noon. When you
return there will be a pork chop feed from 5:00 to 8:00 pm
for $8 a plate. At 9:00 pm, Foolish Mortals will take the
stage to entertain us. Remember, if you show your
A.B.A.T.E. card you don’t have to pay the $3 cover
charge. You can set up a tent at Buckshots or for those of
you who want it a bit quieter, you can go to the campgrounds for a minimal fee. Buckshots will be offering free
limo service to and from the campground. Bring your
friends and get them to join Rolling Prairie. Al will have a
membership booth and will be able to answer any and all
questions about A.B.A.T.E. (he may also offer some of his
Reverend Al wisdom).
Our Buddy Bear Run is set for October 7th. There will be
a meeting at 11:00 am at the Hickory Inn in St. James with
your choice of a hot beef commercial or chicken dinner (at
your own expense). We will then deliver the Buddy Bears
following the meeting. This is for a great cause so it is
always good to have a lot of members for this event.
We will be having a Halloween Party at Reverend Al’s in
Granada on October 27th at 6:00 pm. This is a potluck, so
bring a dish to pass and don’t forget a costume! Al is also
going to have a hay wagon. Bring your own bottle and a
sleeping bag so you can crash at the Church of Al for the
evening-that should be enough to scare ya for Halloween!
Remember if you are out riding and decide to partake in a
few cocktails to utilize the Dial-A-Ride program. This is
really an awesome program and we want to keep everyone
safe!

Hey Way West Chapter!
For once in my life I am without words for this month’s
Grapevine! Imagine that! But I can’t let that stop me from
writing something.
Now that August is past both President Deb and I can
breathe again. We got the kids married on August 11th
finally. We were beginning to wonder if that day would
ever get here! On a whim, I am just guessing that the
wedding and reception went smoothly, without any last
minute disasters!
By the time this issue of the Road Noise comes out our
2007 State Rally will be over for another year. For those
of you who never attended the Rally, you missed another
good time.
It was discussed at our March 2007 meeting that the date
of the fall fundraiser will be October 27th. We had a lot of
new ideas when we discussed this at our March meeting.
The Committee has not come up with a title yet, but
perhaps maybe we could try serving “Road Kill Stew!”
Anyone getting hungry? We will keep you informed of
any updates. If anyone has any ideas please let the
Committee know.
Where has the summer gone? Well, I can’t say I have had
the opportunity to get a lot of riding in this summer. I’ve
had too many “irons in the fire” with trying to get the kids
married on time. Hopefully, there is still some time to start
“Maggie” up before I get her ready for winter.
In closing, always remember you’re unique, just like
everyone else. May all your rides be safe and great.
Til we meet again,

Hello fellow bikers! Hope everyone had a great time at
Sturgis and a safe ride. Well, the summer of 2007 is flying
past with more great memories being made every weekend!
I’d like to start out this month by taking a moment to say
thank you to everyone for promoting this year’s Rally.
South Central members, you always come through when
asked, from planning the Memorial Run for the Rally,
doing all the parades, bike runs, membership drives,
recruiting Sponsors for the State Rally, and selling tickets
at all the functions we attended. Not to mention hanging
all the Rally Posters we could get our hands on. Once
again we plastered them all over the Wisconsin Vet Rally
and they knew we were there. Also thank you to our fine
South Central Chapter Road Guards and all the rest who
helped with the State Rally’s “Memorial Back Roads
Ride.” Let’s not forget the ones who sold tickets, worked
Security, Front Gate, or First Aid, or any number of other
ways you helped make the 2007 State Rally what it is and
was. I can’t say thank you enough to each and every one
of you. You are all awesome!!!
As a “Chapter” we have been having lots of fun this
summer by attending bike runs, rides, fundraisers, rallies,
and attending other Chapter’s events. The Wisconsin Vets
Summer Twister and the trip to Hell were a blast (except
for wearing those helmets in MI). The Vets extended a
personal invitation to our Chapter to attend their next
year’s rally and said we could have the same spot back
again. The membership booth we had at the Meeker
County Fair helped with obtaining a few new memberships
and also aided in selling advance and Rally raffle tickets.
Thank you to all Chapter members who took part in the
Darwin Twine Ball Days parade, worked the membership
booth, and pounded the pavement selling State Rally raffle
tickets at the celebration. We got some great publicity for
our Chapter and the Rally itself. Thank you Joe and Patti
for having the Chapter over after Darwin Twine Ball Days,
the food was great. Thank you Joe for having another
“Monkey Bash”; if anyone missed this you missed a
good party.
We have lots of exciting stuff coming up in September. As
a Chapter we will be doing a lot together. Road ditches
will need cleaning again this year. The Toys for Tots Fall
Dance November 17th will be here before you know it.
Come to a Chapter meeting if you haven’t attended for a
while, and find out what’s going on!! We’d love to see
you! Check your Road Noise events listing and join in the
fun. Going to other Chapter’s meetings and fundraisers is
a blast. If you would like to view the last Chapter meeting
minutes, see the new pictures, or find out what we are
doing as a Chapter, log on to our website and check it out!
If you want a reminder on what the Chapter is up to,
where we’re going, and when the meetings are, send the
“Pres” your email address at [email protected] and
he will be glad to send you reminders on all Chapter
events and rides.

Hey All! Hard to believe but…Rally time, yeahhhhh. Ok,
so it got here really fast this year! Hope everyone had a
chance to get out there and enjoy it. Many THANKS and
lots of kudos to the hardworking Rally Committee, all
their teams and Sub-Committees, and all who stepped up
to the plate when they were needed. Another great year!
Good times, good friends and…(I’m not going to say it!!)
These Rallies get better and more interesting every year!!
Can hardly wait till the next one!
These past few months I have been observing/hearing lots
of disturbing things, and so with that in mind I would like
to borrow a word from Becky’s dictionary/thesaurus
(Webster’s Standard Dictionary). This word is dissension,
“it implies discord; disagreeing; difference of opinion.”
There seems to be a lot of dissension going on lately.
While I realize that the heat has a lot to do with short
tempers, and trying to keep cool at the same time can
sometimes accelerate certain situations. We need to keep
in mind that we are all individuals who have different
ideas, ideals, and personalities, and we all happen to
belong to the same organization. While we all have lives
outside of A.B.A.T.E. (supposedly), the two are sometimes
intertwined. In theory it is easy to say “hang your troubles
at the door” but in practice it is a lot harder then we think.
We need to remember this each time we get together for a
meeting, fundraiser, or just happen to be in the same place
at the same time. We are each unique in our own way, and
while you do not have to particularly like someone, it is
necessary that you be able to put aside your differences
long enough to make it through a meeting or a function.
I believe we each have our own reasons for joining
A.B.A.T.E.-cheap tickets, places to party, friends, rides,
politics, helping the community. No matter the reason, we
are all here for the same purpose-fighting for our right to
freedom!! Dissension is a good thing, but it should be
directed toward our fight for our freedom instead of
fighting amongst ourselves.
As always, if I haven’t been to your meeting recently, I
will be there soon. If you have need of me before that
please contact me via phone or email.
Later…Donna

Hi everyone,
The Chapter ride in July was an enjoyable ride for all.
Several of us rode and had great fellowship after the ride
at the BBQ. Lots of laughs. The KOA Chapter camp out

Even though the weather was a bit on the WET side, we
all made the best of it and had a good time. It was so nice

some old friends that haven’t been seen in some time.

certainly make it much easier for the Committee.
Lastly, there are two people who have relinquished their

Next meetings: The September meeting has not yet been

everyone to let them know when the next meeting will be.
July was pretty busy for everyone. Three of us went to
Finlayson and went to Jack Pine Riders’ 2nd annual Upper
Kettle River Shakedown. It was a great time. Lots of fun.
We would personally like to extend a thank you to Chief
and Dave for the great hospitality we received while
tenting in their backyard for two days. Thanks for a great
weekend. A few others joined Lower Corner for their
annual Toy Run and had a great time at that as well.
We held another Share the Road in Cannon Falls, which
was a success. Kids were very interested and asked lots of
questions. Sounds like we will have a few more riders
out there.
Well anyway, this is short and sweet, but it is Friday,
August 3rd and I still have a lot of things to get done
before we leave for Sturgis tomorrow. So until next time,
everyone be safe out there and enjoy the riding weather.

LOWER CORNER
Next meeting: September 9th, Striker’s Lounge,
Stewartville, 1:00 pm
Hi Readers and Riders,
Well, here we are again in the middle of riding season.
Hope everyone out there is being safe and responsible. We
should all remember to ride safely and sanely. It’s tough to
tell people to respect bikes and riders if you’re cutting
cagers off and darting in and out of traffic. Don’t say “Oh,
I don’t do that.” Face it, we all do it. RESPECT; give it
and (in most cases) receive it.
Lower Corner’s Toys for Tots Run went very smoothly
and we had a good turnout (around 100 bikes), and a good
ride. Once again, Thank You to all the businesses that
participated, and a special Thanks Much to Striker’s
Lounge. Once again those folks went above and beyond to
make us welcome and provide us with space and all the
attributes that make for a great final stop. It’s on the north
end of Stewartville, MN on Highway 63, so stop by if you
get a chance.
Now for the rest of the story. The Ronald McDonald
House Benefit Run, otherwise known as “The Cruise,”
was awesome. Anybody who rode with us that day, Thank
You!! Over 1,100 bikes and more than $90 grand was
raised. Once again Lower Corner helped Rochester PD
with the road guarding. I had an intersection about a block
from my house to road guard and according to my watch it
took 22 minutes for all the bikes to pass me. It gives you
one hell of a feeling in your chest when you look east to
west, and all you see is bikes in a double row, riding for a
single cause. I just wish we could get the same kind of
turnout when it comes to Bikerday at the Capitol.
August 12th was a very important meeting for Lower
Corner. We had a special election to replace resigned
Officers. I hope that if you’re a member you made it. Your
Chapter is only as strong as its members. This Chapter has
a long history, so let’s keep it going. Like I said a long
time ago, if you aren’t satisfied with the way things are,
show up and vote! If you don’t show up to vote, don’t
bitch! I’m going to plagiarize a friend of mine with my
final thought, see if it applies to you! “The battle for
biker’s rights is not about patches, parties or poker runs.
We fight to protect the freedom and promote the rights of
the American motorcyclist...to defend our right to choose
our mode of transportation, attire and lifestyle...to deter
and defy discrimination against us...and to vanquish those
who violate our rights or right-of-way.”
Here are some shots from Toy Run and The Cruise; the
folks in vests are our road guards.

Hi all,
Wow! Where has the summer gone to? It’s hard to believe
that September is here. That means it is State Fair time,
kids are going back to school, and it’s the A.B.A.T.E.
STATE RALLY time. By the time you read this report the
Rally will be over and I hope you all had a great time.
This year we all worked very hard for this weekend.
Thank you to all the people who helped out this year.
From the Entertainment Co-Chair and all of my
Committee heads, we hope you enjoyed all the bands,
games, runs, and shows, and all the new and old friends

Our September meeting will be on Saturday, September

future meetings at the September meeting also.
Well, on August 1st at 6:05 pm, I saw something on the
news I never expected to see in my lifetime, it was the
total collapse of a major freeway bridge over the
Mississippi river. I have seen where bridges have been hit
by a barge, destroyed by raging flood waters, earthquakes,
landslides and train wrecks, but I have never seen a bridge
just collapse from fatigue. This was a tragic event that has
made everyone aware of a problem that could repeat itself
at any time. I know about 20 people that went over the
35W bridge on that day, and two people that went over it
within an hour of it going down. The last time I went over
that bridge was back in March, but the A.B.A.T.E. virgin
and I rode our motorcycles under it back in May on West
River Road. I recently heard that the Stillwater bridge over
the Saint Croix river is in worse shape than the 35W
bridge was. I crossed that bridge on a ride with a number
of other bikers near the end of July. Have you ever counted
the number of bridges you go over or under each day on
your way to work? I go over eight and under seven,
including freeway and railroad bridges.
Maybe our legislators should spend more time and money
allocating funds for bridge inspection and repair, rather
than spending most of their time dreaming up more laws
that restrict our personal freedoms. Like the recent smoking bans in privately owned bars and restaurants, or the
fenced-in beer gardens at all our local county fairs and
street parties that make beer drinkers feel like kids that
have been dropped off in a day care. I don’t know about
you, but wearing a helmet or a seat belt isn’t going to a
damn thing for me when a hundred ton bridge comes
crashing down on my head.
One last word on freedom; on August 11th, Jan Dewitt
celebrated her 60th birthday and her retirement from
Tennant. Congratulations, Jan, we all wish you and Kenny
many years of freedom on your bikes and in your new

Upcoming events: Look through the back of your Road

fun things to do.
First of all, we have to thank everyone involved with our
fundraiser, it could not have been as successful without all
of you who volunteered your time and resources, all of
you who donated, and of course all who attended. We
truly appreciate all of the Chapters who found a little extra
time in their busy summer schedule to attend and we hope
to see ya’ll next year! Thanks Again!!!!
Attending the July B.O.D. in Benson, we were handed a
legislative report and I thought I should share it with you.
This report was given by A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota
Legislator Director, Todd Riba, and it goes like this. Man,
do we got it good in Minnesota: Equal access for Bikers in
public establishments. Most of our endorsement fees are
invested back into our lifestyle. Blue dot tail lenses and
ape hangers, no problem. TEA-LU grant money was
invested into new training motorcycles. Motorcycle friendly Governor. Injured motorcyclists cannot be denied civil
compensation if they are injured in an accident while not
wearing a helmet (keep a close eye on this one). Strong
SMRO’s like A.B.A.T.E., SCVR, and the MN MC
Coalition. Freedom of choice state for all endorsed riders
over the age of 18. Now for the bad news. Phylis Khan
still has a job. Star Tribune polls and articles. WCCO polls
and Bob Sansavere’s ramblings. We live in a state where
manslaughter on our roads is decriminalized. Noise
harassment in Stillwater. Gang Task Force discrimination
against Bikers (another one to watch out for).
Now, what can we do? Stop fighting each other and start
fighting our enemies. Seek out our elected officials and let
them know (politely) that we are aware, attend fundraisers,
town hall meetings, look for them at community events,
and start planning for Bikerday at the Capitol now. Let’s
get 500 freedom fighters there! Use common sense, keep
the pipes quiet at the right times, ride responsibly at the
right times, get involved with your community. Thank you
Mr. Riba for that inspirational report and all the hard work
you do, we really appreciate it. I hope this inspires you to
keep up the fight; we really can’t afford to even give them
an inch.
Enjoy what fall has to bring :)

Hey Chapter members, come ride with us! Following our
September meeting, we will be riding out to tour the countryside and visit some of the locations on our Summer
Passport! Don’t have your Summer Passport? There is still
time to get yours and to begin collecting stamps at each
location you visit. Remember, stamps are redeemable as
silent auction dollars at our Fall fundraiser. Come to the
September meeting, get your Passport, and enjoy some
wonderful fall season riding with other Chapter members!
Speaking of our Fall fundraiser, mark your calendar for
Saturday, October 6th! The Fundraiser Committee is busy
again planning for our fall Octoberfest fundraiser event!
This event will be held at the Laker in Forest Lake and
will feature great food, live music, silent auction, games of
skill, and plenty of laughs! If you want to help out, check
your email for information on upcoming Committee meetings or give me a call if you don’t have email access. We
can’t put on an event like this without your help and your
participation! Remember, monies raised during out
fundraising events help fund activities at the State level as
well as fund donations and activities of this Chapter! We
need your help and support!
Since our many of our Chapter members are active with
the Tribute to the Troops organization, I extend an invitation and reminder to all Chapter members to join the 4th
Annual Ride and Benefit Concert, September 7th-9th.
Check the website for details at
www.tributetothetroops.org, or call me for more information. This is a ride you will not forget and an opportunity
to show your support to Minnesota’s fallen soldiers. Join
your many Chapter members and other riders for this
wonderful event! There are several options to participate,
so be sure to check the website for details.
In September we will be launching a membership
drive/renewal. If you have received a renewal notice and
haven’t sent in your payment, get it in! If you know
someone that might be interested in joining, bring them to
a meeting or get them a Membership form. A.B.A.T.E. is

ability to preserve our rights, to raise awareness to motorcycling, and to further education of riders and motorists
depends upon a strong and united membership.

Hello East Central!!
Welcome to all who are reading this at the A.B.A.T.E. of

the Rally, I hope you had a wonderful time. It’s hard to
believe the riding season is almost over, but there are still
lots of events and things to do in the off time. Keep reading the Road Noise and browsing the various Chapter
websites for updates to events and to keep up on what’s
happening within our state and federal government.

“1,000’s of motorcyclists rode to work today and made it
home safe; they were not wearing helmets.” Did you hear
that in the news the other day? Nether did I. It seems like
every time I hear about a motorcycle accident on the TV
or in the newspaper, someone is commenting on how if
Minnesota had a helmet law we would eliminate motorcycle deaths and severe injuries. “…and the biker was not
wearing a helmet.” That makes as much sense as “Man
falls down stairs and dies. He was not wearing his shoes.”
It’s about the same type of reasoning. You seldom hear
about all the good things motorcyclists do, like Buddy
Bears and the various benefit rides and fundraisers for
charities all year long.
We have all heard the comments from “those who know
what is good for us” that helmets save lives. The next time
someone tells you that, ask them one question. Explain
why Minnesota has the second lowest fatality rate per
10,000 and is twice as low as states that have mandatory
helmet laws. We cannot allow them to get away with just
general statements like “helmets save live.” We must all
remember it is not about whether you choose to ride with
or without a helmet; it is about your right to choose, and
not having our government influenced by big insurance
companies whose real and only concern is not your health
and safety, but the almighty dollar.
East Central, we are currently looking for members to
serve on the Spring Fundraiser Committee. The more people that help out the easier it is on everyone. If you would
like to serve on the Committee to help keep the fundraiser

Hello Again…
Wow has this summer gone fast...the weather is still beautiful and we can finally enjoy the cooler temps at night for
a little peaceful sleep. Just a quick note that Ray’s North
Pole Bar (for those who don’t attend it’s the place where
we hold our meetings) will be hosting an appreciation

A Marine’s Story,
as told by his sister.
I am a very proud sister. My brother,
Gunnery Sgt. Todd LaCoursiere, has
been a United States Marine for over
20 years. He has been to many places
and seen many things. In September
2001 he was stationed in Long Island,
NY. With the tragedy so near by; he
joined the “Body Recovery Detail” at
the World Trade Center. It was not a
fun place to be, but it was very important to him to help the families of
those lost. And so he helped. He lost
count of the funerals he attended.
Good thing he had multiple dress
uniforms.
In 2003 he was sent to Iraq to help
with the war efforts. Training was in
the North Carolina mountains before

I was sorry to miss the “Rock the Summit” party hosted by
our neighbors in Wisconsin, but I did make it to Lee and
Gibby’s wedding-congratulations you guys. Lee was
shaking in her shoes, we all had a blast. The food was
great and we even managed to bring our injured again
friend “Crash” Norgren to the party. She didn’t do much
dancing due to the crutches and wheel chair, but we were
happy to have her back with us.
Our hearts and sympathy go out to Cannon-ball for the loss
of his young son.
I hope you got those posters out for the State Rally. Many
of us do not attend due to a scheduling conflict and another
event; however there are many people who I am sure
would like to attend if notified. We are only helping our
own cause by getting the word out. Speaking of getting the
word out, we could use some new members, so please pick
up a few tri-folds and let people know what we are all
about. Our rights and freedoms are being protected and
fought for by our members and the people that support our
cause. There is power in numbers-get involved.

ending up in the An Nasiriyah area of
Iraq. Temps averaged 110 to 120
degrees and there was no air conditioning. But there were lots of flies,
mosquitoes, sand, and wild dogs. My
father, a Navy vet, joked that he was
probably safer there than on the New
York freeways. Lake Chapter sent
packages of chap stick, eye drops,
hand cream, and snacks that took at
least a month to arrive, but were very
welcome. With all this, I never heard
him complain. He was glad to be there
helping these people find democracy.
He returned home about six months
later.
In 2005 he was asked to return to the
Al Anbar Province of Iraq, and there
was no hesitation. He is a Marine, and
there was a job to be done. He would
return to the “Sandbox,” as he called
it. He did get married just before he
left so that his girlfriend would be
taken care of. In a letter he sent to me
in May he thought it should be getting
to be nice riding weather here, but that
it was 100 to 105 degrees there and
“too damn much sand over here for
riding.” He thanked me for the packages I had sent and noted that it was
not as much fun this tour. It was just
too comfortable! I think you would
only hear that from a Marine. He also
told me that it was neat to see how
democracy was spreading. When he
returned later that year he arrived just
in time to get hit with hurricane
Ophelia! And for breakfast that first
day back, he had BEER! He is my
little brother.
In closing I would like to leave you
with a quote my brother likes. “War is
an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of
things. The decayed and degraded
state of morale and patriotic feeling
which thinks that nothing is worth war
is much much worse. A man who has
nothing for which he is willing to
fight; nothing he cares about more
than his own personal safety; is a
most miserable creature who has no
chance of being free, unless made so
by the exertions of better men than
himself.” ~John Stuart Mill.
This and other patriotic messages can
be found on greeting cards at
Patriotgreetingcards.com. These cards
are made for the military and profits
benefit military families.
Thanks to all the current and past
veterans for helping to keep us free.

Bob Illingworth began his love affair
with motorcycling in the late 50’s.
While he achieved some recognition
as a racer and motorcycle shop owner,
his charismatic presence and passion
for justice would take him down a path
that he had never predicted.
In 1970 when the federal government
originally blackmailed states into
adopting helmet laws, Bob hit the
ground running. He was instrumental
in forming the Minnesota Motorcycle
Riders Association (MMRA), an organization that he would successfully
guide for over 30 years.
MMRA. His tireless efforts behind the
scenes and with the riders in his state
kept him alert to harmful legislation
that was being considered and often
times he was able to educate legislators early enough, stopping the
process before bills were ever written.
Bob’s gift was communication,
enabling him to defeat literally every
piece of anti-motorcycle legislation

A.B.A.T.E. / Jack Pine Riders
Rally and Hayfield Gathering
Recently I was motoring back home
after a fulfilling meal in Finlayson,
past the Chicken Ranch, when I
chanced to glimpse two bikers that
seemed to be searching for something.
A little dead end road that had a beer
banner on the side road, so you couldn’t
really see it. But I knew that was a
dead end road, and where two or more
motorcycles are gathered, there will be
a “Gathering!” That night after the
thunderstorm, getting drenched trying
to find my mother’s seven cats and
two dogs, I motored back out to the
road and found music, staff at a table,
and a fellow that ran out to see who I
was; friend or foe, I guess. I asked if
this was for the public, and shared that
my son was in Afghanistan and that I
supported A.B.A.T.E. Then he showed
me the table and the sign-up sheet, and
promised a “Good Time” and not to
drink and drive too!
The fire-circle was inviting since my
back was still wet and it was roaring,
and a circle was around it that was
inviting to an outsider. As I
approached I was given a cold beer by

Except for one fellow from the cities
who relayed an off color joke to a
brother at my expense while the new
folks were being introduced around
the campfire; even afterwards one of
the Jack Piners said that it was
uncalled for. I apologized for almost
wanting to let him know how I felt
being disrespected! But the cool Irish
bro, Denny, from the Pine City farm
was vigilant, and did not want anyone
spoiling the good time.
Sunday, as I showed up in my all black
and leather outfit, I felt more at ease
and a part of the culture too! I visited
with some of the vendors, met clubs
from all over, and had a few beers
there while watching the gang run the
plank!!! Only Liz, Secretary of Jack
Pine Riders, did it two consecutive
times in a row!!! Go Gurl!!! That ‘72
Harley was a hard kick start; someone
later that night tried to ride it, fell over,
got up, and cracked her till I thought it
responsible for developing a motorcycle safety program and finding its
funding source; and acted as an advisor to several Minnesota Governors on
motorcycling issues.
While Bob was keeping Minnesota
free, he was also working on a national level, advising motorcyclist rights
organizations across the country on
how to work effectively in their state
legislatures. Bob’s natural leadership
abilities and lobbying skills helped
grass roots organizations successfully
navigate through the treacherous halls
of capitols all over the United States.
His passion and tireless efforts have
forever changed motorcycling. We are
blessed to have had him fighting on
our side.

rugged Harley didn’t...and she was
still running strong.
I had the pleasure of meeting Denny

thanks given to them for all of the
wood that they hauled in and loaded
onto the fire, and to all of the ladies
who went around picking up the cans
and bottles afterwards and during the

Having met Dave Dronen, President
of Jack Pine Riders, and having stated
that I have two Master of Arts and that
if I could help in some way with the
“Road Noise Magazine” then I would
do that; and who knows, maybe finding two older American-made motorcycles that my son, Sergeant HarBoldt

RIGHT OVER MY SHOULDER…
By Richard W. Martinson
My Uncle Dan was always into motorcycles. Since he was
a boy, my mother would tell me, he would work on bikes
and ride them up and down the dirt roads where we all
grew up. His passion spread to the rest of the family, and
now we pretty much all ride.
He and I rode together on many occasions; in late fall,
when it was probably a little too late to ride the bikes; in
early spring, when Minnesotans were still getting used to
not having to wear snow-pants to get to their vehicles; and
in high summer, when the wind moving past your body
was the only thing that could keep you cool. Riding wasn’t
what made our relationship; it was what made our relationship great.
“He did not go peacefully into that good night, but fought the
bastard Death right to the end…”
Photo about 1997, Dan with his Electra Glide, “Big Red.”
We shared a lot of things in our lives, and he taught me a
lot about how to be a man, not from the visage of perfection, but from the perspective of someone who’d lived life
and made mistakes. He was a Saint in the eyes of my
grandmother (his Mom), and all of us who loved him. But
he was no angel, he was a rebel. Freedom was a value that
Uncle Dan held dear. While he never talked too much
about politics, laws, or the bureaucratic system, he
supported groups like A.B.A.T.E. and was well versed in
the issues but preferred a conversation with a few people
over a brew and listening to a good blues band. He preferred what would be called “grass roots” movements, but
would never admit to anything so organized as that. He
believed that you should be able to choose what you
wanted to do, as long as your choice didn’t prevent another
person from also having that freedom of choice. His
freedom was the road and his bikes.
To me, his bikes were always perfect. His Road Glide was
beautiful, but he had some other bikes that were less than
new. Never were they ratty, but he had a few bikes in the
barn that were more pieces than bike a lot of the time.
They were just the way he wanted them though. They
were perfect.
www.abatemn.org
It was around Christmas when Doctors told our family that
my Uncle Dan’s cancer was returning, and it would take
some very aggressive treatments to keep the cancer from
spreading. I spent Christmas with my Company in Iraq, but
mostly alone with my thoughts of family. Uncle Dan
“…did not go peacefully into that good night, but fought
the bastard Death right to the end…” He fought until that
February, but I couldn’t make it home for his funeral. His
ashes were kept in a sealed motorcycle cylinder. I can
think of no greater tribute to him. I rode my Uncle Dan’s
2003 Anniversary Edition Road Glide in a Memorial Ride
my mother and I organized for when I was home for
Mid-Tour Leave from Iraq this last April.
Before the Memorial Ride, I went to pick up Uncle Dan’s
Road Glide (named “Seven”) and take it for a ride. Anyone
who has ever ridden an unfamiliar bike, or one that you
hadn’t ridden in awhile, knows that you have to take time
to get to know the bike again. So Seven and I could get
reacquainted before the ride, I rode around the country
roads in the area for a few hours. I went past alfalfa fields,
soon-to-be corn fields, and cow pastures.
On the ride home, I felt like Uncle Dan was right there,
riding next to me. The Sixth sense you develop when
riding close to another was tingling, and if I just looked
over my shoulder, he would have been right there. It was
the closest I felt to him since I left for Iraq.
It might sound silly, but I feel like if I can get close to that
again, maybe I’ll gain a little bit of Uncle Dan back. So, as
I’m here in Iraq, where we fight for the people to have the
Freedom of Choice my Uncle Dan held in such high
regard, I wonder if I can ever get the feeling back again. I
am set to come back this September, and I hope to get my
bike. Maybe it’ll be like Seven. Maybe I’ll find something
else entirely.
Either way, no matter what happens I’ll never forget my
Uncle Dan. I’ll never forget his passion for life, his
devotion to family, and the freedom he sought on the
roads. Sometimes I feel him looking out for me, right over
my shoulder. Maybe I’ll find some solace out there on the
roads, with him riding behind me, just beyond sight, and
gain a little bit of him back…■
Me and Uncle Ronny, a really good friend of my Dad’s. He was
an Art Teacher in Minneapolis for Forty years. He’s been riding
since he was a wee lad as well.

FROM THE OLD EDITOR
The time has come for me as Road Noise editor to say, so
long, farewell!
To do that, there are a lot of people that I need to thank.
There is much I could say about everyone, but I only have
this half of a page. Thank you, Gene Bolgrean and Becky
Hasslen, who without your help, support and professionalism, I would never have attempted the position. My
mentor, Micki Plante! Committee members, Mitch
Backlund, and Lee Plante, who stuck with it through the
entire span of my time as editor, and then some. You two
are the rock! Craig, Denny and Corrine Baker, at Baker
Printing, for your patience and help. Newer Committee
members who took a chance and made a difference by
joining the family; Mike and Mary Berger, Sheila Knee,
Audra Koel, Lori Matters, and Matt Collins. Thanks to the
Road Noise contributors, Rick Arguello, Jan Loft-Pilgrim,
Gizmo Teske, Mike Wilmsen, who also helped make our
SMRO newsletter unique to other SMRO newsletters from
around the country. Thanks to those members who have
since moved on to do something else; Todd and Dawn
Riba, Karen May, Buzz Plante, George Corte, and Bill and
Marianne Nelson. And Steve Kreitlow: I clearly remember
that day Gene and I were riding home from Fargo on
HWY 55, Gene was in the ditch doing that thing guys do
in the ditch, I could hear his cell phone ringing, it was
Steve, he told Gene that we needed to stop by their place
to talk about the Road Noise. We did, and Becky said we
need a new editor; that was the day it all started for me.
The months that followed were a giant struggle; fortunately,
Micki was there with me, we put together two issues, then
the accident out in Sturgis happened where we lost Steve.
That first year was a tuff year, but along with a sturdy
Committee we kept it all going, while making improvements along the way. The Road Noise Committee is like a
family, the Road Noise is the “kid” of the family, and
suchlike in any family, members come and go. But everyone who has been a part of this family has given something
to the “kid,” hence the personality that I think the Road
Noise has. And it’s not just the past and present
Committee members who have given the Road Noise its
personality, it’s everyone of you who has ever submitted
something to the Road Noise, whether that has been a
monthly Grapevine or a Committee Report or a Business
of the Month. You all are like the Aunts and Uncles,
you’re not there when the “kid” has some problem, but
you’ve had an influence on what the “kid” has become.

So you see, the Road Noise and its family are dear to my
heart, which is why my decision to move on was not taken
lightly; I’m just doing the right thing for the “kid” because
I think it’s time for some new blood. I’m confident that
our new editor will take the Road Noise to new heights.
Credit yourselves for all the past rearing and making the
new height possible!
Thank you all very much!!
