“All In” for Our Vision of Excellence!
Pebbles, Bam Bam, and the rest
of the Flintstones’ crew returned
to the 21st Century for a fun-filled
Spirit Week. Turn to page for more
about Homecoming 2012.
It was an incredible evening of inspiration and entertainment as Prince Avenue Christian School’s Vision of Excellence $5.5 Million Campaign was unveiled by Head of School
Danny Howell and capital campaign chairman Shane Todd in what is expected to be the
nation’s last, but most informative debate.
While creatively using a mock debate format, the two leaders explained the school’s
facility needs and plans for effectively expanding, “not to be bigger, but to be better.” The
newly designed Fine Arts and Gymnasium Complex, along with a new athletic fieldhouse,
will provide the opportunity to capture an additional seven classrooms in the existing
academic building, “meeting the first priority of our five-point needs list in order to be the
best school we can possibly be,” says Howell. “We want to build on our Excellence,” says
Howell, “because Excellence is the foundation of our future.”
In addition to meeting a need for additional academic space, the 5-point needs plan
also includes a second gymnasium, fine arts facilities, technology infrastructure, and

Sustaining Excellence
is the Wolverine Way
Why? you might ask...
Another Open House for Prospective Families?
Isn’t our enrollment already full?
The answer to these questions is really quite simple...
we must sustain our excellence in all things. A ministry and school like ours cannot become
stagnant just because we seem to have success. It is
true that for the first time in our 35 year history, we
are nearing capacity for our enrollment. But there is
much more to that story:
•
•
•
•
•
•
The maximum capacity in our existing facilities at Prince Avenue Christian School is 874 students including the lower,
middle, and high schools.
Our current enrollment for the 2012-13 academic year is 800 students.
We currently have 24 openings in the lower School, 5 openings in middle school, and 45 openings in our high school.
Five grade levels are currently full, and waiting lists for these classes have been established.
Prince typically retains over 90-95% of our students a year through reenrollment.
At the end of this year, 49 students will graduate. About 5% of our students will move away or leave Prince Avenue for a
number of other reasons. If we have a 95% retention rate for returning students (which is far higher than other schools in
our area), we would still need to replace an additional 47 students for next year to maintain our enrollment level. Between
graduation and attrition we will need to enroll about 100 new students next year to stay at the level we are now.
So, we must continue to tell our story, and to invite families to investigate Prince Avenue and consider if God is calling
them to enroll at our school. Our Open House for prospective families is one way we introduce ourselves to those who desire
to find out more about us. Most of us who have children
at this school can remember the impact an Open House
may have had on our school decision. Most of our families had the opportunity to talk with other parents and
teachers who served as volunteers and who were available to answer questions about the school. The personal
touch of an Open House can make a huge difference as
a parent seeks to make the best decision about where to
enroll their own students.
That personal touch helps us to sustain our excellence,
and propels us to provide the very best in college prep
Christian education. More and more Christian families in
our communities desire for their children to be a part of
Prince Avenue Christian School, and we are thankful God
is sending them our way.
Our first Open House for this year will be held on
Thursday, November 8 from 9:00 - 11:00 am. A general
information session begins at 9:45 am. Volunteers will

lunchroom space. Howell says that this needs list was determined through two years
of research and parent surveys, as the administration sought to develop a long-term
plan for the school.
“The $5.5 million price tag is certainly a bargain for what we will gain,” says Todd,
who along with his wife Carri Leigh, serve as the Excellence campaign co-chairs. “And
we can absolutely meet this goal if all our families are ALL IN with us in seeking God’s
direction in how we can contribute sustaining excellence for our school.”
“We are all a part of His story for Prince Avenue Christian School,” says Todd, “and
God has each of us here at this very time for His reason.”
The Vision of Excellence evening was a special opportunity for our fine arts students to feature their talents and exhibit their artwork, providing an inspiring backdrop for the unveiling of the future campus and capital campaign’s plans and goals.
The evening also highlighted the stories of several ordinary Wolverines who Howell
described as “part of something extraordinary.” The videos featured Tyler Morris,
Mandy Eley, Ben Butler, Kadijah Arnold, and Tim and Laura Hall.
Tyler Morris, who graduated from Prince Avenue in 2009, is a University of Georgia student who is pursuring his purpose for the glory of God as he ministers to young
orphans in Africa. Senior Kadijah Arnold and sophomore Ben Butler are applying their
knowledge with godly wisdom, and kindergarten teacher Mandy Eley is communicating God’s love to others through her classroom. PACS parents Tim and Laura Hall are
great examples of those who are sharing their God-given resources in Biblical ways.
These each demonstrate the characteristics of the people who are Prince Avenue
Christian School.
Howell says that work has already begun on improving the school’s technology
infrastructure with the introduction of the iPad program in the high school, and that
some improvements have been made in the lunchroom with minor renovations and
added seating. When the school receives the first $600,000 of the $5.5 million, then
the athletic fieldhouse will be constructed, and the existing weightroom will be converted to two academic classrooms. “We will move full speed ahead on the construction of the Phase I Fine Arts and Gymnasium building construction as soon as the rest
of the total is committed, and we have half of the money in hand,” says Howell.

provide tours for prospective families,
and will be on hand to answer questions and be ready to talk about their
own Prince Avenue experience.
We need your help in two ways as
we begin our Open House season:
• We need Prince parents to be
a part of our Open Houses and
help show prospective parents
around our school. All that is
required of you is that you come
with a welcoming smile and be
willing to take prospective parents on a tour of the school. We
will provide information for you
about areas you are not familiar
with and there is always plenty
of administrative and teacher
support to help answer any questions parents may have. Please
let Linda Lavender (llavender@
princeave.org) know if you would
like to volunteer to help with an
Open House.
• The best advertisement for Prince
Avenue is the positive word of
mouth testimonials that are being disseminated throughout our
community. As Prince Avenue
families, you are the best ambassadors for our school. Please
pray specifically that God would
impress upon your heart families
who need to attend one of our
upcoming Open Houses, and
submit names and addresses to
Linda Lavender in the admissions
office of families so that we may
extend a personal invitation to
our Open Houses.
Thank you for your partnership
in expanding God’s work at Prince
Avenue Christian School.
It’s great to be a Wolverine!
Blessings,

Spirit Week and Homecoming
Highlight the Prince Family
From the Flintstones to the Wolverines, Prince Avenue Christian School
students went all out for the 2012 Spirit Week and Homecoming festivities
in September.
The varsity cheerleaders planned a week full of dress-up days and
activities to encourage everyone from Pre-K through the twelfth grades to
participate. Even teachers and staff got into the spirit of things!
Monday, the Flinstones Family was the focus, and many Pebbles, Bam
Bams, Freds, Wilmas, Barneys, Bettys and Dinos roamed the campus. Tuesday, the students jumped ahead a few centuries and came in their finest
Romeo and Juliet imitations, while on Wednesday, the 70’s came alive again
as Prince Avenue’s “Full House” imitators came to life. Thursday seemed to
bring out the most fun, however, as the campus was filled with the Robertson Family--straight from Hollywood by way of the Louisiana backwoods
where the real Duck Dynasty clan resides. On Friday, the Prince Family
showed up wearing their Wolverine finest.
Thursday night, the annual
Wolverine Growl block party and
pep rally were held with hundreds of
students, parents, and friends preparing to cheer the football team to a
victory over Glascock County. The
Homecoming Court was presented,
and Ward Evans was named Mr. PACS
before the talented middle and high
school classes presented their skits.
Friday, the on-campus parade
headed through the parking lots, and
the varsity football team took the
field and claimed an easy victory over
the Panthers. During halftime, the
Collyn Cown, Maddy Meeks, Mary Martin Harper, Anna Cail, Sarah Farriba, Kadijah
girls on the Homecoming Court were
Arnold, and Chappel Talley
featured, and senior Maddy Meeks
was named Miss PACS.

A Full House to Duck Dynasty: Spirit Week is Prince Family
Run, but not just for fun...The annual
PTF-sponsored Boosterthon Fun Run
was also held during Homecoming
Spirit Week. Students in Pre-k through
the sixth grades raised over $35,000
for the school by getting pledges from
family and friends who supported their
efforts to run up to 35 laps around the
Boosterthon track.

Second in State, Region Champs in 2012
The number 2 was significant for
the 2012 Lady Wolverine softball
team. Last year, they won 2 games all
season. Not a great memory, but an
awesome motivation.
This year, they finished the season second in the private school class
A state tournament, falling in the
finals to Mt. Pisgah Christian School-the only team to beat them throughout the tourney.
The team also won the region
8A championship. Both accomplishments were incredible advancements
for the Lady Wolverines.
Led by senior veteran players
Kadijah Arnold, Annabeth Pruett, and
Sydney Roberts, the team set some
realistic goals at the beginning of the
year, and far surpassed anything in
their hopes and expectations.
The addition of pitcher Emily Soles
helped solidify the team, and working with
catcher Chandler Carey, Soles was many
times the difference in the games.
Strong hitting from junior Bethany
Campbell, Pruett, Roberts, and sophomoreHannah Long produced great offensive opportunities for the team. Seniors Chappel
Talley and Kailey Cox anchored the outfield
in their first seasons of play, and other newcomers sophomore Jordyn Smith, and Abby
Hathaway made significant contributions as
well.
Mid-season, Coach Lacy McClendon
stepped away from duties to give birth
to her third child, but she returned to the
dugout for the state tournament. Coaches
Kevin Soles and Cheryl Murray kept the
team rolling in her absense.
Freshman Emily Soles was named
the MaxPreps/NFCA High School
Player of the Week for October 8,
after pitching 42 innings with a 6-0
record, a 1.17 ERA and 57 strikeouts.
She also batted .389 (7-for-18) overall with three RBIs.

Season of Highlights on Friday Nights Under the Lights
Forgetting what lies behind and
working toward the future, the 2012
Wolverine football team was not content to rest on last year’s huge success. The team worked hard during
the off season with a commitment to
start the new season with a strong focus and drive, and senior leadership
and early wins built confidence.
Following victories over St. Francis and Hapeville Charter School, the
Wolverines faced Savannah Christian,
the only team to beat them last year,
at Brad Akins Field. Last year’s state
semi-final loss was avenged, as the
Wolverines won 28-12.
The wins continued over
Glascock County and Athens Christian, but the team experienced their
first home loss in three years in a defensive struggle against Athens Academy, losing 7-14. But they quickly
got back to winning with a 30-0 score
over Commerce High, and a 48-6 win
over Hebron Christian. Following a
break, the team finishes the regular
season the next two weeks with away
games against Pinecrest Academy
and George Walton.
With this year’s Georgia High
School Association change which
provides for separate public and
private school state championships,
Prince Avenue expects to advance to
the tournament with a high seed, and
home playoff games.
Bright Future for Cross Country Runners...With
only two seniors graduating from the 2012 cross
country team, the Wolverine runners will return
a number of experienced team members to the
squad for the next season, including sophomores
Thomas Clements and Jack Wilfong, and freshman
Sarah Beth Johnson. The varsity team will also
be joined by Seth Lashley, who advanced to the
middle school state meet.

Mother Goose Visits Prince Pre-K
Serving Success
The Lady Wolverine volleyball team
made a run to the state tournament
before falling to Atlanta International
last month.
The girls started the season by
defeating Flowery Branch, and got
their first region wins over Athens
Academy and Lakeview Academy.
With only one senior, three
juniors and four sophomores, the
young team finished very strong,
placing fourth in the region after
regular season play, and third in the
area tournament, again defeating
both Athens Academy and Lakeview,
to advance to the state rounds.
Junior Anna Machovec was
named to the All Area first team, and
junior Mary Catherine McElroy was
named to the second team All Area.
Sophomore Sydney Henderson was
chosen for the All Area tournament
team.
Coach Jill Machovec says the
team was determined to follow their
team Scripture, Matthew 5:14-16
throughout the season to be a light
through every circumstance. She
feels the team worked hard, and each
player utilized their strengths and
pushed through their weaknesses to
build strong team play.
Prince Avenue’s youngest students got
a special treat during Spirit Week when
Mother Goose came to visit and share stories and rhymes with the Pre-K students.
An annual tradition, the Pre-K students
dress up as their favorite nursery rhyme
character, parade around the school, share
their memorized rhymes for friends and
family, and eat special treats like “little blue
horns”, “itsy bitsy spiders,” and “moon pies.”
Pep Rally Craziness...The varsity cheerleaders plan a number of pep rallies throughout
the football season to generate Wolverine Spirit. Students and faculty find creative ways
to join in the fun!

Stellar Performance of The Diary of Anne Frank Presented
“This is a personal story of isolation,
fear, hope, and faith that crosses cultural boundaries, eliciting a response
to never allow this kind of persecution
to happen again,” says Joe Strickland,
director of the Prince Avenue Christian
School presentation of The Diary of
Anne Frank which played to a sold-out
audience.
“Anne’s legacy shines a light into
a very dark period of human history,
allowing us to examine ourselves as
we hide in the annex with the Frank
family. The cast and crew of this production are proud to share with you
the courage of God’s chosen people,”
he continued.
The cast and crew of The Diary of
Anne Frank first performed a portion
of the show for the Region 8A One
Act Play Competition in mid-October.
During that performance, PACS students sophomores Josh Whalen and
Erica Wise were named to the Region
All Star cast for their performances as
Otto and Anne Frank.
Other cast members included
Kristen Witcher, Rachel Adams, Chris
Stiles, Rachel Steele, Miller Townsend,
Cole Hurley, Will Douglas, Luke Wallace, Will Admas, and Tyler Breedlove.
The crew who supported the production included Scott Aldin, Joy Harris,
and Allison Shirley.

2012 Mock Debate and Election
Prince Avenue Christian School 5th - 12 grade students listen to presidential “candidates” Sam Kennon and Carl Mattos, along with running mates
Ward Evans and Wesley Bridgham, discuss national and school issues during a mock debate held before the real presidental election.
Kennon/Evans represented the Republicans, and the Democratic
ticket included the Mattox/Bridgham duo. The students ran a campaign
for several days before the voting took place at lunch on Thursday.
At Prince, the Republicans won.

John Butt advances to National History Bee
PACS Academic Team Competition Season Begins
John Butt has represented PACS at four state History Bees in the past three years. On each occasion he has qualified for the National History Bee in Washington D.C. His highest finish at the state level was 2nd last year
at the Eastern Georgia JV Bee held at Cedar Shoals High school. In each of the past two
years John has gone on to represent PACS at the National History Bee in Washington DC.
While he has not placed at this event, he has finished in or close to the top half of the field
of around 100 competitors from across the nation. At the Eastern Georgia Bee on October
27, John placed 4th and in so doing has once again qualified for the National History Bee
but this time at the varsity level. On October 20, the academic team of Curry Cross, Will
Douglas, Cole Hurley, Chase Deatrick, Robert West and Zach Ware finished 4th in the Cedar
Shoals High School Novice Tournament. The team finished 5-0 in the morning and completed the tournament with a 7-3 record. Last Saturday, the academic teams competed in
the Northeast Georgia Regional History Bee and Bowl. The Middle School team consisted
of Danny Lee, Marlan Adams, Meg Garrett, Matthew Butt, and Chase Deatrick. The Varsity
team placed sixth overall in the History Bowl and consisted of Sam Kennon and John Butt.
