After School Program Fall 2012 Volume 3, Issue 1 Ocean View Newsletter Mar Vista’s stories and events The after school program at Mar Vista started the 2012- 2013 academic year with such energy and enthusiasms to serve our students and create a fantastic year for them. Our students have been very dedicated on taking the lead to create a peaceful community in the after school program. The fifth grade class voted for their class student’s council. The council is driven to help their class to have a positive and successful academic. Their president Ashley Garcia said, “I am a perfect example for the class because I like to help people. Also, I always do my work on time and finish my homework early, so I would always have time to help out my classmates. Lastly, I am also reliable and loyal.” This fall students also worked on Youth for Unity and among themselves. They made friendship bracelets which symbolized overcoming gender barriers among them. They work hard and were very happy to see good outcomes. In recent weeks, students also had the opportunity to share about the things they are most grateful for and also put together a few presentations in teams. Our BIG event this month at Ocean View Junior High was the Harvest Fest. The staff put together classic Halloween games such as the “donut string game” and “sticking your hand in brains and eye balls” (cooked spaghetti and rubber balls). Students and staff had a great time and laughed very hard! Also, students were able to wear customs and have a very festive time. “Fear makes strangers of people who would be friends.” —Shirley MacLaine “The most memorable people in life will be the friends who loved you when you weren’t lovable.” —Anonymous The language of friendship is not words but meanings. —Henry David Thoreau 2 The Best Costumes! Presidential Elections at Tierra Vista As our new 2012-2013 school year began, students started their year by selecting their 5th grade Boys and Girls class President, vice-President and Reporter. Their excitement showed by them preparing their speeches and running their campaigns. They got the opportunity to do poster boards and gain votes. The 5th grade class from Miss Susan had the learning experience to explore what needs to be prepared for a campaign, and to be able to practice their speech skills. The third, fourth and fifth graders voted for their favorite candidate and the winners were; President Rafael Jr. Ruiz, Vice President Ivania Marin and Reporter Marie Serrano. They are very excited in giving their best ideas to make this school year a very successful year! Artistic Talent and Science The fourth grade class welcomed the fall season by using nature as part of their art and science projects! Learning what nature can offer was fun during our fall week! “Creativity is contagious, pass it on.” —Albert Einstein 4 Those who make it happen! With juvenile diabetes on the rise and childhood obesity at an all time high it seemed like the best time for the kids at the Laguna Vista after school programs to learn about ways to stay healthy and active. Our students got the chance to listen to founder of Sasaki Kenpo Karate Studios and Physical Trainer, Jody Sasaki. He discussed things they can do to live healthy and active lifestyles while having fun at the same time. Jody introduced them to the ABC’s of staying healthy which are: A) Active: You should try and stay active by participating in many different sports exercising and spending more time outdoors instead of playing on computer/video games or watching television. B) Best/Better: When trying your best at things you are not good at, it will make you better in the long run. C) Courage/Confidence: When you choose to have the courage to try new things that you normally wouldn’t do or things that may have been a challenge for you before, you eventually become successful and it will build confidence in yourself. Jody also reminded us that when we are active we always have to remember to stay Hydrated, and we do that by drinking plenty of water. Before he left Jody gave the kids one last piece of advice, which was given to him by a teacher of his when he was younger, “There are three types of people in this world. Those who ask, what happened?, those who watch it happen and those who make it happen. Which one are you?” We at the Laguna Vista Boys and Girls Club afterschool program would like to thank Jody for his time, and for teaching us all to live a healthier more active lifestyles. — Terrell Penny, After School Site Coordinator ABOUT SASAKI’S KENPO!
