Jameson Health System is a vital source for emergency and surgical care within the region. It’s also Lawrence County’s largest employer and economy driver, touching the livelihoods of more than 1300 families. And it delivers over $20 million in charitable healthcare every year. Several years ago, our Board Leadership identified the crucial need for a new Emergency Department and Surgical Suite to sustain Jameson’s ability to fulfill this critical role. The new Emergency Department will provide the space and work flow needed to meet the patient volumes of today and tomorrow. For many years, our resilient and committed staff have been saving lives and meeting patient needs in spite of, not because of the conditions in our current facility. Our community deserves better. The new Surgical Suite will replace a 1971-era facility with the infrastructure to support the next generation of surgical equipment and technology. It will enable our aging population to get the advanced care they need, right here at home in Lawrence County. It will also provide the level of medical technology preferred by the newest generation of doctors, and will help us continue to recruit the best and brightest medical talent. In 2005, our “Joining Together” campaign began the work of communicating Jameson’s need to grow and to evolve. This project is now becoming a reality, and it’s an exciting time for me personally to be here. A C O M M U N I T Y O F R E A S O N S Building Together is “Joining Together” live. With construction under way, your continued support is absolutely vital to finishing the project, and in the following pages you’ll understand why. You’ll meet people whose lives have been saved, whose families have been held together, whose contributions to the community have been held up through the heroic efforts of the doctors, nurses and staff at Jameson. That’s why I’m asking for your support. The good things we’re building are in turn building a better future for all of us. Douglas Danko, FACHE President/CEO Jameson Health System IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Page 5 Amy & Addison you care for others, too Watching the countdown on New Year’s Eve 2009, time was not on Amy Rodwell’s side. She was relaxing in the living room with a holiday gathering of family and friends when she suddenly fell against her husband, unconscious, a victim of a near-fatal stroke. With her brain starving for oxygen, every second that passed threatened to take Amy farther away from her family, her friends, her career, and her lively, curly-haired daughter Addison. “I remember my husband calling an ambulance,” Amy recalls. “Then it gets fuzzy. Thank God there was a great neurologist on duty at the Jameson ER who recognized immediately what was going on and jumped into action. I have no doubt that Jameson saved my life.” The team that made the time-critical decisions that night had the joy of seeing Amy come back to the hospital a short time later, under her own power, with hugs and thanks. Today, she is back at her job, an aide at a local youth correction center in New Castle. She spends the rest of her time with her husband and Addison. And she counts every moment a precious gift. because ... “ ” Sometimes I won’t think about it for a while, and then all of a sudden I’ll realize just how blessed and lucky I am. A stroke is pretty devastating ... and yet here I am. I still get to be mom to my daughter. SECONDS MATTER Adding telemedicine equipment to our Emergency Department will back up the split-second life saving decisions our staff makes everyday, with real-time access to the country’s most highly specialized medical centers. Dr. David Anderson IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Dr. Paul Wawrzynski & Dr. Conrad Smith Page 7 Chuck & Marjorie everyone deserves to get back to their lives Not every heart attack knocks you down like a blow from a sledgehammer. Chuck Dugan’s heart attack snuck up on him over a couple of days, a feeling of growing pressure in his upper body. On October 5, it got to the point where, he says, “I felt like my arms were going to explode.” That’s when wife Marjorie took Chuck to Jameson Hospital’s Emergency Department. They found that he had indeed suffered a heart attack, and one of the arteries supplying his heart was completely blocked. “It was a shock when they told me what it was. I was expecting something totally different,” Chuck recalls. After being transferred directly from the ER to Jameson’s catheterization lab, Chuck had two stents inserted that restored his blood flow. Subtle or not, the heart attack was a wakeup call for Chuck. It was a threat to the life he shared with Marjorie and their children and grandchildren. And it was a threat to his commitment to the community of New Castle, as manager of the First National Bank. After his surgery, Chuck spent some time in observation. He enrolled in the Jameson’s Dean Ornish program and other related wellness activities, where he’s learning to manage a healthier diet. Then he went back to his job at the bank, and to his wife, children and his grandchildren; almost like it never happened. Which is the way it’s supposed to be. because ... With your help, Building Together will give Lawrence County a new, larger Emergency Department ... the heartbeat of our service to the community. It will give our patients like Chuck more options for treatment, better equipment for arterial surgery, and better facilities for family and loved ones to wait in privacy. “ ” Chuck’s heart attack was quite a scare, but now, we’re back to normal. That is, a wiser normal, even better than before. And that is such a good and happy place to be. IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Page 9 Jonathan & Julia, RN I wouldn’t trust anyone else Julia Yohman is a single mom of four. Her youngest, Jonathan, is an allaround athlete and student who wants to play someday in the NFL. Julia is also a 25-year veteran surgical nurse at Jameson who has worked her fair share of emergency appendicectomies. But when it’s your own child, it’s a whole different ball game. She remembers well the night she and Jonathan realized that what had started out feeling like stomach flu was taking a deadly turn towards appendicitis. And with that came the realization that the clock was running, threatening Jonathan with serious complications. Julia rushed Jonathan to Jameson’s ER, where a CAT scan and other tests confirmed appendicitis, and Jonathan was taken to the OR for immediate surgery. And then she waited, trusting her colleagues and coworkers with Jonathan’s safety. Laparoscopic technology has made quick work of what used to be an invasive operation with a long scar and a long recovery. Jonathan, minus his appendix, was out of surgery in an hour, home 24 hours later, and back in training three days after that. because ... “ Julia has no doubt that Jonathan got the best possible emergency care, from diagnosis through surgery. Julia knows the standards, talent and quality behind Jameson’s OR doors. She’s just as confident that the new ER and OR facilities will have the capacity and the technology to make the trip even faster and smoother for generations to come. ” I have seen many emergency procedures as an OR nurse, but when the patient is your child, there’s no such thing as a routine operation. You feel just as helpless as any other mom. With your support, Jameson’s expansion will add space, work flow and technology to speed the process of transferring Emergency Department patients to surgery. A faster trip from ER to OR IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 Caitlyn 3:19 PM Page 11 victory comes in all forms Sometimes victory is fighting back after an injury so you can join your soccer team in the national finals. And sometimes it’s just being able to play catch with a six-year-old. To be all you can be Caitlyn Bleggi, a serious athlete at Penn State with a wall full of sports medals and a will of iron, achieved her goal with some home team assistance. After demolishing the ligaments in her right knee during a state championship soccer game, Caitlyn came to Jameson for reconstructive surgery and therapy. A short, miraculous year later, she was back with her team as it ran to the top – placing second in the nation. Whether it’s family, community, friends or fellow athletes; in the end, all paths lead to the same goal: winning back your place on the team. To be all you can be again Ann Sumner, along with two of her friends from their church in New Castle, fought a different kind of battle: Crippling arthritis. Total knee replacement surgery and inpatient therapy at Jameson helped all three friends get back to a more mobile life. Ann is back behind the counter at Weingartner’s Florist and Gifts, serving the community she loves. Ann’s friend Marian DeRobertis is again playing catch with her six-year-old grandson, grateful for each day of renewed strength. And Tom Tatarka, the third member of this trio of friends, is planning, with help from wife Paula, to put in his usual crop of tomatoes over the summer. because ... A Highmark Blue Distinction Center for Knee & Hip Replacement, Jameson is leading competitive quality in orthopedics. Dedicated orthopedic operating rooms will be part of our new surgical department, with space for greater patient privacy and to accommodate advancing technology, all essential for keeping our community on the move. “ Ann, Tom & Marian ” My team at Jameson was with me every step of the way – they prepared me for my journey at every phase. The rewards are surprising, just being able to go up and down the stairs again makes a huge difference. IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Page 13 Patricia & Ginger care is a personal thing Patricia McCreary knows something about care. She spent 23 years as a nurse’s aide in the recovery room at Jameson, helping patients take their first steps back to a normal life. She made many close friends among the caregivers and staff at Jameson over the years, all the way up to her retirement. In October 2010, Patricia had a chance to see some of those friends again... this time as a patient herself. Patricia was diagnosed with breast cancer at Jameson’s Women’s Center, and had successful breast surgery at Jameson. “The girl who took me to surgery was a girl I’d worked with,” Patricia recalls. “It was a difficult time, and it felt good to be in the hands of folks I knew. They were all very good to me.” Patricia is now cancer-free and back to her own normal life. She spends time with Richard, her companion of 30 years, and takes care of her dog Ginger. She visits her niece and nephew and their children, with whom she’s very close. And Patricia stays in touch with her Jameson friends and colleagues. Because, as a professional caregiver, Patricia knows how good it is to be able to put your trust in the hands of folks you know. because ... “ YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER ” When I was a nurse’s aide, I always felt a special connection when friends and family came in as patients. It just felt reassuring to have that same feeling again, later in life, when I was looking up from a hospital bed instead of looking down. Your contribution to Building Together will help improve our post-operative facilities to give patients more privacy and better access for family and loved ones. After all, care is what it’s all about. Dr. Fernando Hayetian & Shari Comianos, RN IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Page 15 As retired publisher of the New Castle News, Fred Rentz has a newspaperman’s eye for the pressing needs of our community. And for him and his wife Barbara, there is no need more pressing than supporting an updated and expanded Jameson Hospital. Fred and Barbara are 2010 YMCA Salute to Courage honorees, and Fred is a Board Member of the Jameson Health Care Foundation. And for Fred, it’s personal too. He is a Jameson patient. “A health care system, community hospital and an ER that’s just minutes away is imperative to making our life better. So we are committed to making it better.” Portraits of Giving Chuck Adamo — “This expansion is vital: The Emergency Department will get to patients faster, and the Surgery Department will be state-of-the-art. We’ll have everything a big hospital can provide, and we’ll have it right here in Lawrence County.” Dr. Robert McGann — “Advancements of this project will align Jameson with some of the most advanced centers in the country. It will enable better healing and enhanced service to our patients and families. And it will give us a stronger, healthier community hospital – and a stronger, healthier community.” Fred & Barbara Rentz Diane & Kevin Benedict — “We’re 100% behind this project because we work here, and because we care about the future. We can see, every day, how much better it will be for patients who need emergency and surgical care.” IMAGE.FINAL.qxd:Campaign Bro 1/13/12 3:19 PM Page 17 Now is the time to invest in the A future. s a community, we care for each other – as we should. Jameson Health System is an essential part of that care – saving lives, restoring independence, helping families and neighborhoods stay together. Through Building Together, you can be part of that effort. Your contribution will help us accomplish the community’s healthcare goals today by expanding to meet the emergency and surgical needs of a unique and dynamic region. As part of Jameson’s excellent and compassionate health care system ... your gift will continue to give to our community for generations to come.
