The Cheerful Earful – May 2015 Page 7 of 9 “Just a minute with a member” Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan - to learn a little bit more about each other! “Minute” by Sandy Collier, Communication Committee member Say “Hello” to Nancy Jameson, our featured member of the month! Nancy, tell us a little bit about yourself! I was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, raised in Park Ridge, Illinois and graduated twice from WIU – a BA in English Ed (with all the requirements met for a degree in Park and Rec Administration but WIU didn’t grant double majors at that time) and a MA in Gerontology. I came back to live in Macomb in 1976. I have 2 children: Kelly is an architect in Chicago and is the Project Manager for the WIU Performing Arts Center; Eric is the McDonough County Coroner, co-owner of Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home and works part-time at MartinHollis Funeral Home in Bushnell. I have granddogs and grand-cats!! What type of work have you done? I was the Retired Senior Volunteer Program director in Carthage for 35 years. We helped agencies needing volunteers to create meaningful volunteer opportunities and we helped individuals 65+ find volunteer positions with agencies in need. My territory was Hancock, Schuyler, Brown, Pike and Calhoun Counties and involved over 600 volunteers annually. When I retired from RSVP in 2011 I was asked to interview for the Administrator’s position at the Everly House. Though I did not anticipate this challenge, it has been a blessing in my life. Tell us about your involvement with Altrusa. I got involved in Altrusa because Rosalie Severinsen invited me to attend and to help with the Bazaar. She was very passionate about her involvement and that inspired me. This past year I served as Treasurer and next year will be the Membership Chair. I think the Tutoring program is the best thing we do – students/parents really do see results during the summer ‘down’ time in their educational year. What do you like to do for fun? For fun I enjoy reading, gardening and traveling. I also enjoy volunteering through organizations I belong to in the community. Please tell us something that we might not know about you. A surprising thing about me would be that I was involved in synchronized swimming in high school and for WIU. What else would you like to tell our members? I want all members to be thinking about how they can inspire someone to want to join Altrusa this next year. What is it that inspired your participation? Find someone who might share that passion and invite them to attend meetings. I hope, too, that all members will be kind to each other during meetings so we show each other and our guests that we are a great group of like-minded friends volunteering for some great local causes.
