Bridge Builders Newsletter - First Baptist Church of Macomb
First Baptist Church of Macomb Bridge Builders Newsletter Issue 475 Building Update July 2015 This past month of June we were working in the East wing of the Church building, and lining the handicap and other cemented parking. Volunteers were cleaning and sealing the floors. We are getting things ready for when we will be able to start finishing rooms. Senior Pastor Wally Holt Associate Pastor Claudia McCain Office Manager & Editor Leann Walters Inside this issue: Senior Pastor’s Article 2 Birthday’s & Anniversaries 4 General Income & Expense Summary 4 Sermon Series 5 This month of July we will be working on the kitchen, and installing hand railings for the front walk. The kitchen cabinets are being finished, and should be installed this month. We are working with the health department on requirements for the kitchen. In June, our church building hosted two big-sized events. One was FBC's sponsored Family Fun Night, with bouncy houses, games, and food - all inside the multi-purpose room. The other event was the Outlet, with a live band and over 60 teens in attendance and 40 volunteers. Praise God for how we are able to use our new facility! The band members stayed the night in the church. It will be nice in the future to have the East bathrooms, with showers, available. We will be able to serve better in this capacity as well as disaster relief teams that we may host, as a ministry. Summer projects include: finish the east bathrooms, install hand rails, run network and telephone lines to East classrooms, complete two classrooms on the East end, landscaping, caulking sidewalk cracks, and we're deciding what to do about the church's lighted sign. The old building still needs tender care with weeding the flower bed, and mowing. If you are able to contribute financially, above and beyond, each of the 11 classrooms on the East end will cost about $2,500 in material, the two East end bathrooms will cost about $5,000 each in material, and a portable baptistery will also cost about $2,500. There is also a small bathroom on the far East end. Praise God for his work in our life as a community of believers. We pray that we can continue to lean upon him as we minister to this community. Senior Pastor’s Article When Things Get Hot, I Trust God A Lot Daniel 3:16-18 (NLT) 16 Opening Prayer Leaders July 5 Richard Hurt July 12 Sharon Brown July 19 Jim Richardson July 26 Paula Black August 2 Allen Black Candle Lighters July 5 Celena Mangalaraj July 12 Jaydn Glaue July 19 Mykel Glaue July 26 Kyler Glaue August 2 Isa Molina Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. 18 But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” Have you ever felt like you were in big trouble and would need a miracle to get out of it? That’s how Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego must have felt when King Nebuchadnezzar was about to throw them in the fiery furnace. But they were in trouble for the right reason: They had refused to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar’s statue, which stood 90 foot tall and 9 foot wide, even though they had been commanded to do so. But they told him that they could only worship the one true God. As the showdown heated up, Daniel’s three friends weren’t about to trust the king for help. They kept their trust in God and he kept them safe even when things were at their hottest. When things get hot for us, we need to remember these three young men (most likely teenagers) and trust God a lot. We must keep looking up to Him, He will never let us down. I do look forward to working and worshiping with you this month. Pastor Claudia and Alice Bishop, ABWM President, a t t e n d e d t h e Re g i o n a l Conference of ABWM held June 5-7 at Effingham, IL. Melanie McNiff, Director of Peoria Friendship House was missionary speaker. A side trip was taken on Saturday to see the community cross outside Effingham. The regional project to buy a car for Sarah Chetti, IM Missionary in Lebanon was surpassed by $3,000. She has a prison ministry with young girls. In response to the growing Syrian crisis International Ministries has sent $50,000 of One Great Hour of Sharing emergency relief funds to aid Syrian refugees. Dr. Laura Parajón, an American Baptist International Medical Missionary serving in Nicaragua and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, has been named one of three 2015 Rural Heroes by the World Organ ization of Family Doctors. Rural Heroes are chosen based on their excellence as care providers, decision makers, Issue 475 communicators, community leaders and team members. She got her medical degree from University of New Mexico because it focused on working with underserved populations in urban and rural settings. In 2001, she and her husband, David, (an internist and preventive medicine physician) became missionaries having felt called to respond to medical needs of the poor beyond the US. In Nicaragua they worked together with David’s father and former missionary, Dr. Gustavo Parajón to learn from him and continue the ministry he started in 1967, which trains and supports health promoters in remote areas of rural Nicaragua. In turn the promoters are able to provide basic health care to the community. The Parajóns started AMOS (A Ministry of Sharing) Health and Hope as a way to expand the health ministry initiated by Gustavo. The acronym spells the name of the Old Testament prophet, Amos, who spoke on behalf of the poor. During the past 45 years of collective work, there has been significant reduction in the number of deaths among the women and children where AMOS serves. A few yeas ago Laura was a speaker at the Mission Conference in Springfield. At that time she was appealing to children in the US to collect Pennies for Pills for those who were infected with worms. Most of rural people have that problem which affects their general health. The Parajóns are parents of a daughter and two sons. In part of the Volta region of Ghana, Africa, a young woman can become a “trokosi” a wife of the gods. It is a life of forced labor, sexual and physical abuse, social isolation and deprivation of adequate food, sh e lt e r, h ea lt h care , a nd education. It is slavery and supported by centuries of cultural tradition. The process begins when someone commits a crime or any act that confronts the gods. In order to appease the gods the offenders family must give up a young virgin daughter, usually between the ages of 8 and 12 who is forced to serve the gods the rest of her life. If she tries to return to her family, the village will stone her to death. The practice was made illegal in 1998 but not one of the priests has been sentenced to a 3 year term. In response the Ghana Baptist Convention, a partner of American Baptist Ministries, founded the Baptist Vocational Training Center. The center rescues, rehabilitates, and educates in a 3 year training program for young women victimized by the trokosi system. The women are taught how to maintain personal hygiene, how to wear a dress, what to eat, and other basic skills. Do you believe what goes around comes around? Everything happens for a reason seems Biblical. But is it? Almost everyone can quote Jesus’ statement “Judge Not.” But are we quoting him accurately? Let your conscience be your guide seems reasonable, but God never said we should do that. This message series is not for the faint of heart. But, it is a series that will encourage believers to help build each other up in faith.
