Those vests were to identify those in charge of the building project there in Trenton, Texas. So I felt both confident and honored to work with him that afternoon of our mission trip. The door was covered over with pressboard siding that we needed to cut out. He and I began the arduous task. He leaned a ladder on the board and began cutting away with the saber saw. He was on the outside of the building and I was on the inside steadying the sheet of pressboard. As the blade of the saber saw began to move from east to west I immediately saw the problem. The ladder was leaning on the board that would surely fall down when he finished his cut. And when the board came down so would the ladder that was leaning against it. And when the ladder came down so would my “orange vest” working buddy who was standing on the ladder. I tried to yell but the noise of the saber saw was deafening. “I better move quickly!” I thought to myself. The east was getting close to the west! So I reached through an opening from the inside of the doorway and began to pull on the leg of his blue jeans. No response! He might have thought that my pull on his pant cuff was an affirmation of the good work he was doing. But before I could think of plan C it happened. The board came loose and the ladder fell. So did my “orange vest” friend. Before you could say “Ticonderoga” he was laying on his back in the dirt on the outside of the doorway. We all rushed to his side and began to see what damage had been done. His first words? A laugh and “I sawed the board right out from under me!” Fortunately, my orange vested working buddy was OK. However, sometimes we are not so lucky. We saw the boards out from under ourselves all the time. Sometimes the very thing we set out to do is the very thing that does us in! We too wear orange vests. We think that we can handle the job and that we know what we are doing. Yet we find ourselves on our backs in the dirt of failure and surprise. We should know better. If we would consult the Master Carpenter, He would tell us about our leaning ladders. But instead we hurry along just wanting to hurry up and finish our “cut”. And the cuts are killing us. My wise orange vested friend learned a valuable lesson that day…even at his age. Check twice where your ladders are leaning. Then cut with confidence. The same should be true of each one of us. Check twice on Whom you are trusting. Then live your life with confidence! He serves in Southeast Asia and is focused on building relationships and sharing Christ with university students. Below is a brief excerpt from one of Joshua’s recent emails. “We begin speaking with students on campus and making friends. We usually try to see if they want to practice their English. If they speak enough English for us to have a conversation, we continue and see where our conversations go. We then invite them to events after school, or on the weekend. This could be going to the mall, watching a movie, playing games, going to the park to play ultimate Frisbee. We continue to meet with the students over and over until we had the chance to share with them about the Lord.” Our students are serving Christ this summer in fifteen different countries. Please keep them in your prayers. International Student Give Away We are receiving donations of furniture and household items to help new international students. Donations can be brought by the BSM anytime before August 17th. Thanks for your help!
