Seminar Series
Begins September 23
Each month, LaGuardia Arts is hosting a Seminar
Series from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM in the Library. This
series is open to all members of the LaGuardia
community.
The purpose is to provide thought
provoking, engaging speakers who will expose us to
a wider range of ideas and experiences. Our first
speaker is LaGuardia Alum Alexis Chrisoforous.
Alexis Christoforous is a network television and radio
broadcaster for more than 22 years. Most of that time,
she has been an Anchor and Correspondent for CBS
News where she has appeared on “The CBS Evening
News with Scott Pelley”, “CBS Sunday Morning with
Charles Osgood”, “CBS This Morning” and over 200
CBS affiliate stations across the country. Her reports
have also been heard nationally on the CBS Radio
Network and NewsRadio 880 in New York. Alexis has
also anchored for WCBS-NY, “CBS Morning News”
and “CBS Up-To-The-Minute.” She was also anchor
and lead writer for the nationally syndicated program
“CBS MarketWatch Weekend.”
Alexis is also very active in her community. She is on
the board of the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund and
gives of her time to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
She helped to narrate the award-winning children’s
book series, “Loukoumi”, and participated in a
children’s celebrity cookbook with proceeds going to
the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Emergency Readiness
What is a Soft Lock-Down?
Emergency Readiness
The Role of Students and Staff in a Soft Lockdown
The following information is about the Department of
Education’s Emergency Readiness Initiatives that are
in place in all NYC Public Schools.
Below are the procedures to be followed during
a soft lock-down The first soft lock-down drill of
the year will take place on October 1.
Every school currently has procedures for
emergencies. In 2000, New York State Education
Law Section 2801 was enacted requiring schools to
develop safety plans regarding emergency response.
In July of 2001, the law was amended to require
that plans include information for evacuation and
sheltering. In accordance with this, “schools need to
conduct drills and other exercises to test components
of the emergency response plan.”
• A soft lockdown is when there is a potential
threat or hazard inside the building, but
there is no identified imminent danger to
those assigned to do a building sweep.
• A soft lockdown will begin with the PA
announcement: “This is a drill. Attention,
this is a soft lockdown drill. Take proper
action. This announcement will be repeated.
• Upon hearing the announcement, all BRT
members (except for Assembly Point
Coordinators) will report to the Command
Post, as well as the Nurse, the Custodian
and an SSA.
• The floor wardens on each floor will contact
the Command Post at x3208 for further
directions.
• All students out in hallways and bathrooms
should immediately go to the nearest
cafeteria, classroom, or office.
• All other staff members in rooms, offices or
cafeterias will quickly retrieve anyone out
in the hallways or in restrooms near their
rooms or offices and bring these individuals
inside.
• Lock the doors and do not allow anyone in
or out for any reason.
• Make sure everyone in the room remains
silent and quickly move to the middle of the
room, out of sight and away from the door.
The door pane should not be covered.
• Turn the lights out.
• Do not open the door for any reason, if you
hear the end of period signal or even if you
hear fire gongs or someone banging on the
door saying they are first responders.
• After conferring with the Command Center,
School Safety and all Floor Wardens will
begin a sweep of the building.
• When the sweep teams indicate that the
threat no longer exists, they will notify the
Command Center and bring any student out
in the hallways to the Dean’s Office.
• At that point an announcement will be
made. Do not open your door for any reason
until you hear the PA announcement “The
soft lock-down has now been lifted”
School staff members are trained in various
procedures that are outlined in the School Safety Plan
and we currently conduct a variety of drills throughout
the year to prepare our staff and students. Section
807 of the New York State Education Law requires all
schools to conduct a minimum of 12 fire drills each
year. Section 917 of the State Education Law states
that schools are required to provide and maintain
automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment,
and drills are conducted during the year to assess
the use of AED units in an emergency. In accordance
with Section 3623 of the State Education Law, drills
are also conducted at schools that focus on safety on
a school bus.
In addition to conducting these types of drills, our
school has a Building Response Team that is trained to
activate and respond to different incidents that may
occur at our school. Under the new General Response
Protocol (GRP), every school will be conducting
specific drills designed to help prepare all school
communities for three different types of response to
emergencies that may occur: evacuation, shelter-in,
and lockdown. Opportunities for parent engagement
are available at our school to ensure that families are
involved in our school-based emergency readiness
program. Parent versions of the School Safety Plan
are available upon request in the main office, and
information explaining the GRP is included with this
letter. Many other important resources for families
are also available by visiting http://schools.nyc.gov/
Offices/OSYD/default.htm
Emergency readiness training in schools takes place
in September and continues for staff and students
throughout the school year. Student training is grade
appropriate and designed to ensure that students
understand the importance of these drills without
causing unnecessary alarm. Please review the
General Response Protocols that have been given to
all students, and discuss these procedures with your
child.

All families are reminded to update the Emergency
Contact Cards that are on file in our main office.
This includes providing and updating information
indicating phone numbers, and the names of adults
to whom the school may release children in an
emergency. Families are also encouraged to register
with Notify NYC (https://a858-nycnotify.nyc.gov/
notifynyc/) to receive information about emergency
events, and call 311 for additional information about
a school during an emergency.

This is a great, great fair for students and families
interested in music, theatre, theatre design,
fine arts, art history, design, vocal, etc. The
representatives are typically from the academic
colleges rather than admissions so they are
knowledgeable about auditions, portfolios, etc. It
is a great opportunity for younger students as well
so they can learn about these things early. To

PSAT
The PSAT will be administered to all 9th,
10th, and 11th graders on Wednesday,
October 15.
Prepare for the PSAT!
You will receive a PSAT guide and
practice test on Tuesday, September 23,
during your English class. The full-length practice
test includes answers and can be used to prepare
for the assessment.
All ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students in
the NYC public school system will sit for the PSAT
on Wednesday, October 15. The DOE pays for the
test.
No make-ups will be offered.
The booklet you received in your English class
contains information about the test as well as a
practice exam. It is imperative that you study and
prepare for the PSAT. Understanding how the PSATs
are graded and the style of questions that are
asked could make a significant difference in your
score. While your score will not be a determining
factor when you are applying for college, there
are schools that will start sending you information
based on your success. This can be a great way to
start familiarizing yourself with universities. There
are also several scholarship opportunities available
to you if you do well on the PSAT. Preparing for the
exam could make getting one of these scholarships
more likely. In addition, studying for the PSAT could
help strengthen the foundation of your school work.
Spending extra time refreshing your skills in math,
reading comprehension and sentence structure can
only reinforce your success in school. It is always
best to be prepared.
Good luck.
IMPORTANT
Please make sure
that on the day of
the exam you bring a
calculator and pencils.
Roster Review
Please check your pink sheets to
make sure that all of the students in your
class are on your roster and that no student
on your roster has failed to attend class.
Bring any discrepancies to the attention of the appropriate guidance counselor(s).
Hallway Passes
If you are in a room that does not have
a laminated hallway pass with the room
number indicated on the face of the pass left from
last year, then you should see Ms. Rivera in the
Main Office ASAP for another copy. Please keep
these passes accessible for students to use, but
stored in a safe location at the end of the day such
as in a teacher’s desk or hanging in the phone box
if you are the last person in that room. Also, do not
forget to lock the classroom or office door behind
you when you leave the room and no one else is entering.
Please do not carry these passes around
with you as there should be only one room pass in
circulation per classroom or office. Please review
the rules printed on the face of the pass with your
students and report the loss of any such pass to
your supervisor immediately. Classroom students
and monitors should not be allowed to leave to walk
around without such a pass, even to go short distances.
Test Administration
Please read the Test Administration
Handbook by visiting LaProgram.org.
Each department chairperson will have a hard
copy of the manual for easy access. Each teacher
must be familiar with the information provided
in the Handbook and must sign off with his or her
department chairperson.

Teachers (continued)
ADVANCE
Advance, New York City’s teacher evaluation and development system, includes multiple measures of
teacher performance, including Measures of Student Learning (MOSL). Measuring student learning allows
educators to better understand their students’ strengths and how best to support them.
Measures of Student Learning 2014-2015 –
Notable Changes for School Year 2014-2015
New Evaluation Option
As of September 15th, those teachers who received an overall rating of “Effective” have a fourth
option from which to choose (Informal observations, minimum of 4). Teachers who wish to revise their
selection can do so by completing the updated MOTP Observation Selection Form (available in each AP’s
office). Teachers who originally chose option four must now complete the updated form confirming their
selection. Both forms will be kept on file.
ASSESSMENT OPTIONS
There are more assessment options available across grade/subjects. Specifically, the NYCDOE has
approved the use of additional NYC Performance Assessments and
3rdParty Assessments.
NYC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS
New York City Performance Assessments are not mandated for
use as State or Local Measures of Student Learning in 2014-15.
BASELINE ASSESSMENTS
The administration of fall baseline assessments is now optional.
Schools may still choose to submit baseline assessment results to be
used in the calculation of growth models. For State Measures, the
principal will determine which baseline assessments, if any, will be
administered for MOSL purposes. For Local Measures, the School Local
Measures Committee will recommend which baseline assessments, if
any, will be administered for MOSL purposes. If the assessment is used
for both the State and Local Measures, then the principal will decide
whether the baseline will be administered for MOSL purposes. Because
baseline assessments can be instructionally valuable, schools may also
choose to administer fall baseline assessments even if they choose not
to use the scores for MOSL purposes.
If you have any questions regarding information on this page, please call Ms. van Keulen,
AP of Data and Technology, at (212) 496-0700 X 2261.

LINKED TARGET POPULATION
Schools now have the option to link teachers to ONLY the students they teach, even if the assessment
is not administered in a course they teach.
SUBGROUPS
If the School Local Measures Committee selects the same assessment and target population as the
State Measures, then the growth of a subgroup of students will be used for the Local Measures. School Local
Measures Committees can choose their “subgroup of choice” to apply in these cases. This year, additional
subgroup options are available; a list of available subgroup options can be found below. School Local
Measures Committees can also choose to “customize” subgroup selections by selecting different subgroups
for different grade/subjects.
Subgroup choices:
• Lowest performing third of students
• English Language Learners
• Students with Disabilities
• Overage/under-credited students
• Black/Latino males
Target Population: it refers to the students who will be included in the measure. Here are the choices:
Measurements
There are two measurements available:
Growth Models
Measure the growth of students over the course of the year compared to growth of similar students across
the city or across the State (depending on the assessment).
Goal Setting
For assessments with individual target populations, teachers set goals for how students will perform
on end-of-year assessments and submit them to their principal. Principals then finalize and approve goals
and then send them to the DOE for approval. A teacher’s growth score is determined by calculating the
percentage of students that meet or exceed their goals.
