Gear up for transformation
Fresh winds are blowing across HT Media. CEO Rajiv Verma brings us up to date on the
initiatives that are powering change in all of our businesses.
I
t has been a very busy and productive quarter across
HT Media, focused on innovation and growth in all our
businesses.
As you know, the digital transformation of our news
operations is a major focus of attention at present, with
activities related to Project Butterfly moving along at a rapid
clip. The first floor newsroom in Delhi has been stripped
back to its bare bones, and a new space for Hindustan
Times, Hindustan, and Mint is emerging from the rubble.
Over 150 kilometers of high-speed cabling have
been laid, furniture has been built to our specifications,
and every square inch of space has been given a fresh
purpose. Crucially, a new way of working based on speed,
communication, and shared data has been captured in a
design that will make ours the most creative and dynamic
editorial environment in the region.
While the physical space is being built, the Eidos
Méthode publishing platform, which will integrate our
print and digital teams, and underpin much stronger
web and mobile offerings is also been under
construction. It will reside in a much improved
data centre, on state of the art private cloud
infrastructure, and our teams will access it from
across the country over a faster network than we
have ever had. These platforms are almost ready
for prime time, and will begin to go-live during July.
This is a major investment for us, and we are
looking to all of you to ensure that we are
able fully to reap its benefits through
richer digital and print journalism, more
compelling advertising offerings, and
greater operational efficiency.
As you know, however, digital news
is not just a matter of better workflows,
servers, and networks. The real
revolution is underway at the core of
the way we conceive of the relationship
between content and technology.
Some of the most compelling work
in this space is being done by start-ups outside traditional
newsrooms. We want to be part of that process, which is
why we have joined the US-based investment fund North
Base Media in launching MediaHack, an accelerator for
early-stage news technology companies, that will give us a
stake in the growth and development of dramatically new
approaches to our fast-changing business.
Our partners in this venture, Marcus Brauchli and
Shasha Vucinic, have decades of experience at the cutting
edge of global media, both in editorial and business roles,
and we believe that working with them we will be able to
take news innovation in India to a new level.
Elsewhere in the group our focus on new technologies
and markets is beginning to bear fruit. Digital Quotient,
our mobile solutions agency, has extraordinary capabilities
in data and apps. It has now turned profitable, with some
large campaigns in India and internationally this year.
Of course not all innovation involves technology.
As you will read in this issue of Between Us,
Fever has been innovating in both content
formats and advertising, consolidating its
strength on the back of a vibrant offering for
listeners, and great solutions for our clients.
Similarly, in Studymate, a new daytime
English learning product, English Mate, is
set for launch. That will further accelerate
that rapid growth this business
is experiencing, with 11 new
centres, and a doubling in its
top-line over the past year.

ever 104 FM is one of the leading FM
stations in the country and attracts
more than 17 million listeners across
four Indian metros – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru
and Kolkata. It is a young and aspirational

Fever believes that the real reason a listener
tunes in to radio is for music. With this key
consumer insight, Fever has offered
innovations such as 40 minutes of non-stop
music, ‘Fever Ka Kabzaa’, ‘Fever Super Fresh’,
104 seconds music trailers, on-air music
concerts, ‘Fever Guzzler’ and ‘Fever
Unplugged’ series with legends and stars of
the music industry. Fever, through these
pioneering initiatives, has established best
practices in the industry and some of these
innovations have been imitated by competing
players.
Fever dominates Bollywood like no other
radio station does. In 2014 alone Fever was
the radio partner with 52 movies and 107 song
exclusives. The Fever studios are an essential
destination for promoting blockbuster
movies, and music’s biggest stars frequent
Fever for various shows. The videos are
available on Fever’s YouTube channel.

Fever Voice of Change (FVOC) –
Radio’s Biggest CSR
Realising the responsibility of being a
broadcaster and thought leader, Fever
consistently sensitises the listeners
and aims to bring a positive change in
the society. Harnessing power of the
medium, Fever launched ‘Fever Voice
of Change’, a campaign that urged
listeners to not just wish to see a
change they want in society, but also
be a part of this change. FVOC
believes in bringing about
‘demonstrable’ change, with the
belief that ‘You’ and ‘I’ are enough to
bring a change in society, and aptly
emphasises ‘Ab Bakwaas Band,
Badlaav Shuru’.
John Abraham, the ultimate
youth icon, has been the face of the
campaign. Aamir Khan, Varun
Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh have also
joined hands for various initiatives
of FVOC.

attack survivors. Fortis Healthcare joined
hands as healthcare partner and helped
many survivors get a new lease of life. The
first survivor who Fever helped was
Tarana from Agra, who was attacked by
her neighbour to whom she denied
marriage.
The third initiative was
‘Mission Jurrat’ that aimed
at empowering women to
handle harassment in all
spheres of life. FVOC tied up
with police authorities
across the four metros to
promote women’s helpline
services.

witnessed a lot of enthusiasm. People who
thought they did not have a voice were given a
platform to become the harbingers of change.
This is simply the beginning, since Fever
believes that ‘asli badlaav abhi baaki hai’!
Fever Powers the Sports Revolution in
India!
Fever has always been synonymous with sports,
be it cricket, football, kabbadi, or F1 races. In
India, cricket is not just a game; it is a religion.
And who better to worship it with

With the Cricket World Cup
2015, Fever launched the

biggest campaign on radio –
‘One Day Mataram’. It was a
blitzkrieg across the World Cup with Sachin
Tendulkar exclusively coming on Fever for
days, people’s ‘One Day Mataram’ anthem
getting created and launched on a grand scale,
and Sudhir, Sachin’s craziest cricket fan who
paints his body in the colours of the national flag
and Sachin’s name, appealing Indian fans to
show their craziness as part of Fever’s ‘Craziest
Cricket Fan’ contest. Six winners
across the four metros got a chance to
watch the India-Australia semi-final
live in Sydney on March 26.
Fever has been the official radio
partner of four of the biggest IPL
teams – DD, MI, RCB and KKR.
Fever plans an on-air, on-ground
and digital cricket festival to

bring the cricket heroes closer to their
listeners. Fever RJs play music in IPL stadiums
and listeners are given experiences that money
just can’t buy.
IPL gets the perfect pitch on Fever.
Not only cricket, but Fever has dominated
other sports as well. Fever has been the official
radio partner to the Buddh International Circuit
(Fever RJs play the music there) and the Virgin
Marussia and Vodafone McLaren teams.
Fever promoted Indian Super League by
partnering with two teams – Mumbai City FC
and Atletico de Kolkata. Fever launched the
first ever sports fan park – ‘Fever Fan Park’ –
in Kolkata, with a crowd of more than 10,000
fans per day reveling in the FIFA carnival for
days. Fever has been associated with Hockey
India League as well as the World Kabbadi and
Pro Kabbadi leagues.
With such initiatives, Fever has made great
strides in its continued endeavour to bring
sports closer to its listeners.
Bacardi launched Indimix, the ‘desi’ variant
of Breezer, exclusively on radio with Fever.
Fever created a series of humorous rap jingles
where the two new flavours ‘Aam Panna’ and
‘Nimbu Paani’ rapped about topical things
that we witness in our daily lives.
Music was not the only genre that Fever
provided as a client solution. Fever branded its
entire stationality to celebrate the launch of
Samsung Note Four. As an innovation, Fever
called itself ‘Fever One Note Four’ during the
campaign. What’s more, for three days Fever
aggressively covered blogathons and Samsung
Red Carpet events with celebrities, giving
further scale to the mega launch.
Fever launched Maruti Ciaz in Kolkata and
executed the ‘50 Days 50 Stars’ campaign. For

was on Fever airwaves and Maruti
Ciaz became the talk of the town.
Vodafone and Fever launched
the ‘Vodafone Cyclathon’, a
citywide activation that saw
celebrities and eminent gentry of
Bangalore come together to cycle..
Fever also scored record-breaking
non-stop cycling for 104 hours.
Fever is closely working with new
age companies to win more
customers and engage productively
with them. The team implemented
roadblocks on the ‘Big Billion Day
Sale’ in October for Flipkart, and
executed interesting integrations
such as ‘Snapdeal of the Day’ and
‘Quikr Music Station’.

Fever’ brought together music and
India’s biggest indulgence –
marriage – at a Fever pitch. It was
the first ever on-air wedding in the
history of radio and received several
thousand SMSs for participation.
The chosen couple was the talk of
the town with Bollywood celebrities,
sponsors and listeners enriching
the experience.
‘Cruise with Fever’ was another
huge initiative to give listeners an
experience beyond expectations.
Listeners had to participate in a
simple on-air contest, and the
lucky winners won an all-expensespaid trip to Malaysia.
The ‘Flat Giveaway’ initiative
gave Fever listeners an opportunity
to win their dream home during
Navratras at no hidden cost. The
activity generated more than 50,000
SMSs and was one of the biggest
listener engagements on radio.
In Kolkata, Fever joined in the
Durga Puja celebrations to make the
radio experience as grandiose as
pandals across the city. Fever gave
listeners a royal ride through pandals
in Fiton chariots, similar to the ride
zamindars took a few decades back.
In Mumbai, Ganpati was
celebrated on-air with much vigour
and fanfare, with contests and
gratifications making it a listener’s
delight.

include the crime-based ‘Case 104’ and ‘Ishq
Wala Love’ with romance as its theme.
The 2015 Delhi assembly elections had
‘Each One Kheench One’, the third consecutive
award winning campaign for the Election
Commission of India, urging each listener to
convince at least one other person to vote.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi
embraced radio to express his ‘Mann Ki Baat’,
Fever took his message to their listeners.

house is very different from working
in an MNC as both are very different
businesses i.e. local vs international
linkages.
However, on another level it is exex
actly the same as the basics of the
businesses do not change in any “for
profit” enterprise. It is always about
the growth, profitability, products
and people.
What do you love about Ht
H as an
organization?
What I love about HT is the
fact that even though we are
an organisation which is decades old, we are still open to
changes and new ideas. The
biggest example being, ‘Project
Butterfly’. Once the project is
completed, we would be looking
at a world class media house with
the latest technology that could be
compared to any other in the world!

How do you connect with your teams to
create a win-win for all?
I believe in interacting with my teams
on a regular, real-time basis and follow the open door policy. This helps
me organise and plan in a way that
creates a win-win for all.
Please share one of the most challenging moments in your work life.
At the time I had joined the organisation it was in transitioning mode. It
was a challenging time as everything
needed to be changed and new ground
rules had to be set. Nevertheless it
was a success and I take pride in being a part of the core team to do so.
What is the idea of a perfect working
day for you?
I like to start early and be done with all
my routine meetings so that I can have
the remaining time to plan new strategies and goals for the organisation.
What do you think needs to be changed
at the organisation?
Rather than using the word change,
I would use the word ‘addition’. We
need new blood in our organisation
from top companies so that we can get
new ideas and ways of working in order to get to a work culture that would
surely and steadily lead us to the Fortune 500 companies’ league. Just like
the famous Jack Welch (ex president)
of GE said and made the mantra of his
company – ‘Copy Shamelessly’ in case
of value addition.
In your opinion what are the qualities of
a good leader nowadays?
A leader should have a good grass
root understanding of his trade/business. He should be one with the team
and should be able to instill confidence in his people to be known as the
go-to person. The flow of information
is important to be on top of things.
What keeps you inspired every day?
The desire and will to achieve more
as I believe that nothing is impossible.
Even the word says – I M POSSIBLE.
Do you think you have realized your potential as a leader?
The day I will achieve my potential as
a leader I would become dormant and
stagnant. I believe in learning all the
time from the situations and people I
deal with on a day to day basis and
keep improvising on my own skills.

you admire and why?

My family, they are my anchors in
life.
Who is the one person/gadget you rely
on the most and why?
My better half, my wife, who is my
close confidante and my life support,
and of course my phone as I can be
connected to work and family at the

weekdays?
Weekends, as that is the time I get to
spend with my family, especially my
two beautiful children. I am of the belief that instead of just spending money,
we need to give time to our children, so
that they develop an emotionally strong
base and values which will make them
sail through any and every situation in
life. I try to share in the joys and celebrations of my family and friends.

he first expansion of Studymate
in 2014 was successful in its
objectives. To celebrate and
reflect on its future path, the
Studymate team got together on
February 27-28 at their annual meet.
Day 1 focused on business imperatives
and expansion plans as well as the
AOP roll out, while Day 2 focused on
personality building and introduction
to the five core values of Studymate.
The theme of the meet was ‘To
double the student base by helping
each to score more’ and it set the
goal for the next year. The time was
crucial for the team, as the business
was moving from 12 centers to 23
centers across Delhi/NCR. The

leaders from all departments.

Mobile and social platforms are

world. Nowhere is this more evident
than in India where more than 500
million people will have access to the
internet, many for the first time, in
the next few years. MediaHack will
identify and support entrepreneurs
who want to build leading-edge
content and advertising technology
related businesses in India.
MediaHack is inviting applications
from entrepreneurs who wish to
participate in the accelerator.
Successful applicants will spend
several months on the program,
interacting with each other and leading
media and technology thinkers from
around the world. They also will receive
an initial investment of up to $100,000
to convert their ideas into fast-growing

Rajiv hints at the possibility of a
dedicated corpus of funds, but says it
is too early to zero in on a number, and
based on the kind of progress the
initial ideas make, the corpus could

Responding to a question on how
the Indian media startup ecosystem
looks, Rajiv said, “I believe we should
try to do things where we have the
right to win. We understand the
media industry very well and we
have assets and resources in the
industry that can be brought to make
an idea a success. Earlier, all
professionals would stick to jobs as
the only career opportunity. However,
given what has happened in Silicon
Valley and other parts of the world,
entrepreneurship is becoming an
important career option.”
He added, “Forces of technology
are today making it possible for ideas
to become financially feasible and
viable for people to become
entrepreneurs. Given the fact that
Technology has
brought about
profound changes in
the way media is
consumed today
India is a young country and there is
a lot of youth power, it is an added
advantage. All this adds to the media
startup ecosystem. I think the time
has come for an accelerator like this,
and the ecosystem will only develop
and become larger and larger.”

young and specialised investment
and advisory company. Focusing
primarily on media and mediarelated technologies, NBM has its
presence in growth markets with a
possibility of real and significant

formally takes flight
The HT leadership team shared with HT staff the why, what and how of
Project Butterfly at a recent town hall meeting at New Delhi
T
he buzz around Project
Butterfly has been steadily
growing louder in HT
newsrooms across the country for the
last few months, but on May 4, CEO
Rajiv Verma formally gave it flight.
In a town hall meeting at New Delhi,
the CEO and editors of HT’s flagship
properties – Sanjoy Narayan
of Hindustan Times, Shashi
Shekhar of Hindustan, and
Sukumar Ranganathan of Mint –
explained the contours of Project
Butterfly and what the
transition to being a
digital-first news
business means for
the future of the
company. The panel,
moderated by Nic
Dawes, HT’s Chief
Editorial & Content Officer,
fielded questions from HT staff.
The town hall was attended by
over 200 people from the Delhi/
NCR offices, and live streamed in
HT offices across the country,
with an estimated 3,500 people –
more than half of our workforce –
watching it.
Rajiv kicked off the event by
putting forward a question he is asked
constantly: “What is the future of
newspapers in India going to be?”
“Frankly speaking, no one has a

clear answer to that,” he said, adding
that although newspapers are far
from dead in Asian markets such as
Singapore, Korea and Japan, no one
knows how long the market will stay
that way. “We should assume that
technology will disrupt things in
India. Our best strategy is to prepare
for the worst and hope for the
best. We should embrace
technology rather than
fight it,” he said.
Newspapers might have
an uncertain future but
the news business itself
will never die.
Rajiv also talked about
how the digital space has
lowered barriers of entry to new
markets. “Earlier, the way to enter
new markets was to play in them for
10 years, challenge the incumbents,
hope to change people’s newspaper
reading habits and then hope to make
money. But thanks to digital, those
barriers are really low. On the flipside,
we are now competing on a global
stage with ‘glocal’ players –
competition that is
global in resources
but
local
in
context.”
Rajiv, no doubt,
was referring to the
sudden influx of
international brands such as the
Huffington Post, BuzzFeed and
Quartz, which have all started Indian
editions in the last two years. “I do feel
like this battle can be won,” he said,
“because we understand the Indian
audience. We have a trusted brand.”
One of the biggest changes that
Project Butterfly will bring about is a
new integrated newsroom that will
combine all three flagship newspapers
under a single roof to efficiently
combine resources. The backbone of
this newsroom will be a brand new,
enterprise-class content management
system called Méthode, produced by
EidosMedia, which will allow us to
reorganise our workflows for both the
web and print.
“I have no hesitation in saying that
this will be one of the most modern,
scaled-up newsrooms in the world,
something that we will all be very
proud of,” said Rajiv. “It is now our
responsibility to keep it going and
keep it modern. We will be set for the
next 5-10 years until the next big
change comes.”

out. “We have to change our entire
mindsets,” said Shashi Shekhar,
editor-in-chief of Hindustan.
Sanjoy Narayan, editor-in-chief of
Hindustan Times, reiterated this
point. “From producing a newspaper
at a single point of time in a day as we
do today, we are going to become
continuous publishers,” he said. “It’s
going to impact the way we work, our
news cycles, everything. There won’t
be a time when we are not publishing
something or the other. Our reporters
will possibly have to learn new skills.”

succinctly. “No matter what
technology we use, at the core of
everything are good, old-fashioned
journalistic principles. Those are not
going to change.” He added that the
possibility of collaborating with the
other two titles was exciting. “We
have fine editors. We can do
interesting things together,” he said.
Vinod Sharma, Political Editor at
Hindustan Times asked about the
importance of talent to drive the new
technology. Sanjoy acknowledged it
was crucial, saying “Technology is no
substitute for good journalism. Even
with our digital transition, demand
for good writing and editing skills will
be even more than what we need now.
I think these skills are something that
we have to invest in. We need people
with higher quality skills to meet the
challenges that are already here.”
Harinder Baweja, Investigations
Editor at Hindustan Times asked the
panel about the impact of Project
Butterfly on print operations, to
which Sanjoy replied that it was still
work in progress. “Since we are very
different from markets where the
decline in print has happened very
fast, it is difficult to say how exactly
the print side of things will change. It
is up to all of us to sit down and figure
it out.”

had been contributing articles to
HT since my school days, but never
knew that I will become a part of the
HT family which I joined in July 2013.
I am enjoying the experience here,
especially many golden opportunities
to interview celebrities who I always
wanted to meet. Talking about my
hobbies, writing and traveling are
there at the top. I have always believed
in what someone has rightly said, “On
this earth there is nothing great but
man, in man there is nothing great but
mind.”
Which holiday destination did you
visit recently?
I visited Hong Kong, Asia’s World
City, and it exceeded my expectations.
A very modern, cosmopolitan and
vibrant place, it compels you to
visit again and again. Honestly, this
destination proved more captivating
than my visit to Singapore in 2006.
Why did you choose this
destination?
My uncle James Sandhu and aunt
Babbly Dhillon are settled at Hong
Kong for several decades, and always
wanted me to visit them. Whenever
we spoke, they always shared how
great a destination Hong Kong is, so
this had been on my mind for several
years. Also, I saw its beauty in several
movies. So when I finally landed there,
my excitement knew no bounds.
Who all joined you for the vacation?
I went alone, but never got bored as
my journey was dotted with a lot of
enthusiasm and curiosity. I savoured
every moment, right from boarding
the nonstop Cathay Pacific flight
from New Delhi. My uncle and aunt
together with their children made my
visit memorable, inspiring and joyful.
What were the most beautiful
places you visited/ things you saw?
The list is endless and begins with the
famous Victoria Peak (428 meters
above sea level) from where one can

more. Do not forget to buy postcards
of Hong Kong’s old airport Kai Tak
which was right inside the city and
was notorious for dangerous flight
landings in those days. Apart from
this, Chinese hand fans and various
other decorative items are also
popular purchases.
What is the most memorable
moment from your trip?
Breakfast at the luxurious Ritz
Carlton hotel on the last day of my
visit truly stands out. The entire
building is covered in glass, with
the restaurant on the 117th floor
standing 428 meters above sea level.
Each table has binoculars, and
the spectacular view takes
your breath away.
This experience is
truly memorable,
albeit an expensive
one.

he Management Trainee (MT)
and Direct Management Entry
(DME) Programs at HT have been
designed to be the cradle that
cultivates future talent for the
organisation.
2015 has marked the tenth year of
the Campus Program, with a batch of
20 MTs and 11 DMEs joining us from
premier institutions across India.
Designed to be highly interactive,
the one-year program promotes team
building and leadership skills, while
providing opportunities for growth
and learning through key assignments
and assessments.
It consists of on the job experience
coupled with management skills
training and mentoring, and aims at
providing broad and valuable
experience to the trainees and
helping them achieve a leadership
position.
The new MTs and DMEs were
formally welcomed and inducted
through a two-week Corporate
Induction program aimed at facilitating
smooth transition from campus to
corporate and providing an opportunity
to interact with business leaders.
On the whole, the orientation
program provided the campus hires
an understanding of what defines us
as an organisation, how we work
across diverse businesses and
functions, and the lives HT touches.
