SDABA Member Profile
An interview with Jim Roddel, President of ABS
By Sheila Cain
Auto Body Specialties today is located near the intersection of Interstate 29
and 90 in Sioux Falls SD. This area was just cornfields back in 1950 when Harley & Sallie Roddel scraped together the money to start their business in downtown Sioux Falls. Early on, the business focused on both the mechanical as well
as the body shop but after 20 years they found that their niche was in the paint
& body side of the business and changed over to exclusively the PBE products.
As they continued to grow and expand their business and product offering they
moved into larger downtown locations conveniently located to their customers.
In 2003, they moved to their new location, it was again to better serve their
customers and saving ABS as much as 30 minutes per route on deliveries.
In 1990 Harley and Sallie retired and sold the business to their five children,
four of which are still in the business. The oldest, Ron retired last year. While

South Dakota Auto Body Association
President’s Notes
Pete Stemper
First, I would like to thank our past-president, Ken
Shoun, and past-vice president, Roy Mclaws, for their two
years of leadership in the SD Auto Body Association.
Your time and efforts are very much appreciated and we
look forward to having you continue to be a valuable
member of our group.
I would like to introduce myself as your new president and let you know there has been some changes in
my professional life since I was president six years ago. As
of December, 2011, I have opened my own body shop
just outside of Madison and it is called Stemper Auto
Body. I am having lots of fun and continue to be very
excited to be in my own shop and work in the auto body
repair business.
Now, down to the business at hand. We have many
areas of concerns to review and decide what we want
to target first. The board has already been contacted by
many of our members on several subjects such as mark
up of parts, percentages that you should receive and related insurance issues. There is also a concern about labor
rates/prevailing rates and how does the insurance company determine prevailing rates? Do they know what it
costs for each of you to do day-to-day business? Towing is
also a topic that will be looked at. Is towing a sublet or is it
a part that deserves a mark up? There is also price matching questions/concerns of oem vs after-market pricing.
These are the topics that the board members have
been contacted about so far. We will start looking into
these concerns of our members and hope that many of
you will become active in the changes that we need to
keep moving forward. The board also wants to invite
everyone to the golf tournament that will be held in Dell
Rapids on June 15th. We will have a meeting at 10 am
that morning to go over some issues and decide what to
address. See the sign up sheet for the golf tournament in
this issue and I hope to see you there. If for some reason
you can’t make the meeting and there is something you
want discussed e-mail me at pete@stemperautobody.
com.
Over the last few years, as I was serving as your Executive Director, Bryan Crocker and I have been lobbying
in Pierre and keeping an eye on the laws that concern our
business and the changes that need to be made in those
laws. These topics will also be addressed at our meeting
on June 15th. I hope you have a successful summer and
I look forward to working with you and the association.

the four siblings are the main decision makers in the
business, Jim Roddel, the president of ABS says, “the
beauty of our organization is that we check our egos
at the door. Sometimes we agree to disagree but ultimately we do what’s best for the company.” He went
on to say, “our employees see the decisions we make
are on behalf of everyone in the company not for the
individual. When you come to work for us you become part of the ABS family.” Many employees have
twenty or even thirty plus years with ABS.
Being part of the ABS family is now more evident
than ever. ABS has now become an employee owned
company. When Ron Roddel retired in 2011, it was
decided that an exit strategy needed to be in place for
all the owners. The decision was made to develop an
ESOP, Employee Stock Ownership Plan, with Ron’s
share. The company purchased Ron’s shares then redistributed them to employees that meet certain requirements as a new employee benefit.
Since their start in 1950 the company has grown
to five locations. Four in South Dakota and the newest
location in Mankato, MN was added in October 2011.
Auto Body Specialties serves South Dakota, northwest
Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and northeast Nebraska
with five locations.
• Sioux Falls, SD – This location serves as headquarters and the central distribution warehouse. A
majority of the products come into Sioux Falls and
then is redistributed to the other branches.
• Mitchell, SD – This is the oldest branch, established in 1978. Located one hour west of Sioux
Falls it’s distribution area is south, west, and north
of Mitchell serving most of central South Dakota.
• Brookings, SD – This location was opened in
1986. Located one hour north of the warehouse
it has a distribution area of 50-75 mile radius.
• Watertown, SD – Watertown was added in 2000.
Serving an area north, west and east.
• Mankato, MN – Their newest location was added

Classes and Training
A classroom area that seats anywhere from 32-48
comfortably is used by ABS for training of their own
staff as well as their customers. The PPG Certification classroom portion can take place there but for the
spraying portion they use a local Vo-Tech College or
the PPG Training facility in Edina, MN. PPG MVP
classes, training on the Chief computerized measuring system and 3M classes have all been held in their
training center. Hands on training of the in-house staff
on new products also are held in this state of the art
facility. The room is fully Internet and wireless accessible and has been the location of webinar training as
well. Local community groups also utilize the room
for meetings.
Sales Team
Every store has a dedicated sales staff consisting of
an inside and outside sales team. The sales manager,
Joe Bruntz oversees the outside sale team of seven
refinish sales people and two industrial sales people.
They also have a Certified PPG Tech Rep, specially
trained by PPG, Dean Kommes assists the entire sales
staff. He travels wherever he is needed to assist and
address customer’s needs. There are fourteen inside
sales reps in the company in the various locations. In
place is a support team behind them of paint mixing
specialists in every store and warehouse people.
Delivery vans run twenty-two routes out of the
five locations covering nearly 60,000 square miles. Because of the sparse population they have to drive a lot
of miles to reach their customers. Local city deliveries
average four per day. Country routes typically leave at
8:30am and return about 4:30pm. Driving about 300
miles per day, that translates into over 1.5 million miles
driven in a year.
All the salesmen are connected to the ABS computer system via a laptop and can view customer accounts, check inventory, and place orders directly from
the customer’s location. Country deliveries are typi-

Shops

charge.
“A partnership,” Jim Roddel answered without
hesitation. “We believe it is ultimately a three way
relationship with our paint supplier, PPG, ourselves,
and our customer. Our goal is to improve the body
shops performance. We work to help our customer
understand the insurance company, (the shops) main
customer, through different programs and processes.
Through technology of equipment and paint we try
to help our customers be more productive. That may
mean, how to push more cars through the paint booth
but also look at equipment to help them be more productive. We try to be creative on how we can get that
equipment in the shop through special pricing or dating programs so that at the end of the day, if they are
successful then we can be successful.”

The Future
“A third generation is involved but we also have
many bright share holders in place to continue the
business,” says Roddel. “We may expand into new areas as markets mature. ‘If you are not growing you are
going backwards’ so we put pressure on ourselves to
look at our territories. The answer isn’t always brick
and mortar. We may be able to do it with deliveries.
We are comfortable with where we are for now but
options are always open.”
Final Thoughts
“Our foot print, through our long standing history,
where we are entrenched in South Dakota, I think our
customers know us pretty well and know the values
we stand behind. Something I preach with our people
is ‘honesty and integrity above all else’ and hopefully
when we go to business everyday our customers come
to respect that about us,” says Jim Roddel. “We are not
the cheapest game in town and we tell our customers
that. If you want to buy on price we are probably not
your best fit but if you are looking for value, we want
to promote value. There’s a much bigger picture than
just the price on product. We don’t lead with discount
and that can be frustrating to some of our people with
what they are up against. I say, ‘you have to sell yourself and not be just an order taker.’ We don’t have our
inventory on wheels, our inventory is based here and I
guarantee it’s going to be a lot larger, we can be more
responsive to taking care of our customers through our
free delivery service and other programs we can bring
to the shop. So much is based on paint and how we
can bring value to that customer. Our value can and
will outshine anyone else’s price.” Jim added with a
quote from Benjamin Franklin “The bitterness of poor
quality remains long after the sweetness of low price
is forgotten.”

In memory of Gordon Dale Tonner
Feb 09 1942 - Mar 22 2011
Gordon D. Tonner, age 69,
died suddenly of natural causes
Tuesday March 22, 2011.
Gordon Dale Tonner was
born in Lynch, NE on February
9, 1942 to Homer and Esther
(Nielsen) Tonner. Gordon was
raised on the family farm outside of Lynch. He graduated from
Lynch, NE in 1959. Gordon attended Southern State
College in Springfield, South Dakota graduating from the
Autobody Technician program in 1960. The next year,
Gordon married his love, Kathleen “Kathy” Ann Schmidt.
From 1960-65, Gordon worked for Fleetline Auto
Body in Omaha, NE as an auto technician. He worked
for the next five years for HP Smith Ford also in Omaha.
In 1970, Gordon accepted a position with Kent Industries in Sioux Falls, SD as a salesman in South Dakota
and southeastern Minnesota. In 1981, Gordon began
working for Crest Industries in Sioux Falls. He also
owned and operated Soo Fastener.
Gordon was instrumental in organizing the South
Dakota Auto Body Association. He was involved as an
editor of the newsletter and helped organize yearly state
conventions. He was chosen salesman of the year many
times. He also held the title of executive director and
was the first lifetime honorary member. The Auto Body
Association’s sign was always on display in his shop.
Everyone who knew Gordon knew of his passion
for cars. He spent much of his free time working in
his shop. He loved to rebuild totaled-out cars and was
not afraid of a challenge. He was always happy to help
friends and family with their cars.
Cars weren’t the only things that Gordon enjoyed
working on. He enjoyed spending time working on
home improvement projects, helping friends and family
building things such as decks and screened porches. He
seemed to be able to fix anything.
When not repairing things, Gordon and Kathy enjoyed spending time in their camper exploring the country and visiting friends and family. They always loved to
sight see and visit. Their motorcycle was also a favorite
past-time. Warm summer nights with Kathy on the back
were a favorite.
Most of all, Gordon will be remembered for his love
of conversation and good-natured disposition. He made
everyone he talked to feel like they were an old friend.
He loved to make people laugh with all kinds of jokes
and stories. He truly cared and respected people and
found the good qualities in everyone.
Gordon will be remembered and deeply missed by;
his wife, Kathy, son, Brent, daughter-in-law Tracy and
their children Katie and Matthew, his daughter Sheri,
daughter Kristi, her children Ryan and Maegan, sister
Carol Tienken, sister and brother-in-law Linda and Ralph
Hasselquist and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Homer

❖ Having an active presence in Pierre for legislative action - In Numbers There Is Strength
•
SDABA membership means fellowship with other body shops and an exchange of ideas. In addition, through membership in one state trade association, shops have strong representation before government agencies, the consumer, and the
industry at large. All shops are encouraged to join SDABA and make a difference by getting involved. Support your state
association and reap the many benefits of membership.
