Size: 78" × 94"
Blocks: 80 (8") blocks
Quilt DESIGNED and made by Sharon Holland.
MACHINE QUILTED BY Michele Mason.
Daydreams
This design is a bit tricky—the units you make are not the ones you see after the quilt is
assembled. You’ll notice several designs emerge, such as stars, Puss in the Corner, and
Square-in-a-Square. Refer to Sew Easy: Quick Triangle Squares on page 5
to make the piecing go quickly.
Materials
4¾ yards cream print for blocks and
borders
3⁄8
yard each of 3 blue prints, 2 red
prints, 2 gold prints and 1 green
print for blocks
2½ yards blue print for blocks and
binding
Fons & Porter Quarter Inch Seam
Marker (optional)
71⁄8 yards backing fabric
Full-size quilt batting
Note: Fabrics in the quilt shown
are from the Dilly Day collection for
Paintbrush Studio.
Cutting
From each 3⁄8-yard piece, cut:
Measurements include ¼" seam
allowances. Border strips are exact
length needed.You may want to
make them longer to allow for
piecing variations. Instructions are
written for using the Fons & Porter
Quarter Inch Seam Marker. If not
using this tool, follow cutting NOTES.
• 2 (47⁄8"-wide) strips. From strips,
cut 10 (47⁄8") squares.
NOTE: If not using the Fons &
Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker,
cut squares in half diagonally to
make 20 half-square triangles.
From cream print, cut:
• 2 (8½"-wide) strips. From strips,
cut 18 (8½" × 4½") rectangles.
• 10 (47⁄8"-wide) strips. From strips,
cut 80 (47⁄8") squares.
NOTE: If not using the Fons &
Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker,
cut squares in half diagonally to
make 160 half-square triangles.
• 9 (3½"-wide) strips. Piece strips to
make 2 (3½" × 88½") side outer
borders and 2 (3½" × 78½") top
and bottom outer borders.
• 25 (2½"-wide) strips for strip sets.
From blue print, cut:
• 25 (2½"-wide) strips for strip sets.
• 10 (2¼"-wide) strips for binding.
Block Assembly
1. Referring to Sew Easy: Quick
Triangle Squares on page 5, make
160 triangle-squares using cream
print squares and blue, red, gold,
and green print squares.
NOTE: If not using the Fons &
Porter Quarter Inch Seam Marker,
join 1 cream print triangle and
1 blue print triangle as shown in
Triangle-Square Diagrams.

2. Make 20 triangle-squares of each
color.
3. Join 1 cream print strip and 1 blue
print strip as shown in Strip Set
Diagram. Make 25 strip sets. From
strip sets, cut 400 (2½"-wide)
segments.

Make 2 side pieced borders.
2. Lay out 10 Four Patch Units and
4 cream print rectangles. Join to
complete top pieced border. Repeat for bottom pieced border.

2. Add pieced side borders to quilt
center. Add pieced top and bottom
borders to quilt.
3. Repeat for cream print outer borders.
Finishing
1. Divide backing into 3 (23⁄8-yard)
lengths. Cut 1 piece in half
lengthwise to make 2 narrow
panels. Join 1 wide panel to each
side of 1 narrow panel; press seam
allowances toward wider panels.
Seams will run horizontally. Remaining panel is extra and can be
used to make a hanging sleeve.
2. Layer backing, batting, and quilt
top; baste. Quilt as desired. Quilt
shown was quilted with an overall
design (Quilting Diagram on page 4).
3. Join 2¼"-wide blue strips into
1 continuous piece for straightgrain French-fold binding. Add
binding to quilt.

Quick Triangle-Squares
Use this technique to make the trianglesquares for Daydreams. The Fons & Porter
Quarter Inch Seam Marker offers a neat
way to mark accurate sewing lines for this
method.
1. From each of 2 fabrics, cut 1 square 7⁄8" larger than
the desired finished size of the triangle-square. For
example, to make a triangle-square that will finish 4"
as in the Daydreams quilt, cut 47⁄8" squares.
2. On wrong side of lighter piece, place the Quarter
Inch Seam Marker diagonally across the square, with
the yellow center line positioned exactly at opposite
corners. Mark stitching lines along both sides of the
Quarter Inch Seam Marker (Photo A).
A
NOTE: If you are not using the Fons & Porter Quarter
Inch Seam Marker, draw a diagonal line from corner to
corner across square. Then draw sewing lines on each side
of the first line, ¼" away.
3. Place light square atop darker square, right sides
facing; stitch along both marked sewing lines.
4. Cut between rows of stitching to make 2 trianglesquares (Photo B).
