MISSION
T
his season, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago engaged in a combination of new and
tried-and-true formulas for success: new leadership and programming paired
with a continued commitment to evolving the art form and presenting it to diverse
groups of people in interesting and unique ways.
In his first full year as Artistic Director, Glenn Edgerton successfully led the
institution into areas of growth that were inspiring, ambitious and unprecedented.
The company expanded its international relationships through a three-week
tour in the fall, appearing in three cities in Israel, returning to fans in Germany and
performing at the prestigious Holland Dance Festival. In addition to our onstage achievements, Hubbard Street
laid the groundwork for crucial collaborations during the coming season, including a Chicago performance
series focused exclusively on works by Israeli choreographers from Batsheva Dance Company and a
commission for Resident Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo to create a work using dancers from Hubbard
Street and Nederlands Dans Theater II.
Hubbard Street also deepened its relationships with peer cultural institutions in Chicago: the annual
“Inside/Out” Choreographic Workshop performance took place at the Art Institute of Chicago for the first
time as part of our season in residence in the new Modern Wing, attracting nearly 2,000 people; our annual
collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra afforded us the opportunity to collaborate on a work
with Mead Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates; and HS2 dancers challenged traditional ideas about dance
performance space when they performed as a part of Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds exhibit, presented by the
Illinois Institute of Technology.
New to our educational offerings this season were our Youth & Family Dance Classes, welcoming students
as young as 18 months to our studios. This program makes it possible for aspiring dancers to potentially
“grow up” with Hubbard Street—starting with youth classes, growing into adult classes at LCDS, continuing
through our Summer Intensive pre-professional training program, then potentially launching a career as a
member of Hubbard Street 2 and advancing to the ranks of our main company. With 75% of our second
company dancers coming directly from our pre-professional training programs and 35% percent of main
company dancers coming from the second company or apprenticeship program, the opportunities for young
dancers are inspiring.
I am pleased to report that the many efforts of Hubbard Street’s leadership to focus on reducing expenses
and develop strategic new ways to generate revenue proved successful during the 2010 fiscal year. Though the
company experienced an operating deficit, our overall institutional deficit was decreased by approximately 70%.
Although we have much to be proud of, there is still more we can do to ensure that there is a bright and
thrilling future for contemporary dance in Chicago and around the world. I speak for the entire Board of
Directors when I express our appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our staff and dancers during the
past year, our excitement about all that is to come in the seasons ahead and our gratitude for the support of
our donors and patrons, who make it all possible.

as the product, cultivating the creation of new dance and nurturing the development of young dancers.

This year’s “Inside/Out” Choreographic Workshop, which annually invites HSDC dancers to
experiment with creating choreography for each other, energetically culminated a season-long
residency at the Art Institute of Chicago.
The National Choreographic Competition (NCC) provided time and support for 2010 winners Jonathan
Fredrickson, Gabrielle Lamb and Maurice Causey to create new works for Hubbard Street 2. The 2011
winners, announced in the spring, are Samar Haddad King, Dominic Walsh and Edgar Zendejas.
Resident Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo created First Light, premiered by HS2; Deep Down Dos,
which the main company premiered with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and Blanco, which premiered
at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Artistic Associate Terence Marling premiered At ’em (Atem) Adam
during the Spring Series.
Hubbard Street 2 offered its young dancers opportunities for professional growth through a challenging
schedule of studio training, interactive school and community performances, national and international
touring and development of new work with rising choreographers, including site-specific works at the
Illinois Institute of Technology and for the Gala at the Art Center in Highland Park.
The Summer Intensive training program provided classes in a variety of styles and the opportunity to
learn company repertoire. Of more than 500 who auditioned, 120 aspiring young dance professionals
participated at the Hubbard Street Dance Center in Chicago and the Colburn School in Los Angeles,
three of whom have joined Hubbard Street 2 as dancers or apprentices.
The Lou Conte Dance Studio Scholarship Program provided financial assistance for 22 pre-professional
dancers to further their training in ballet, jazz, modern and Pilates; participate in repertory workshops;
and, for the first time, join HSDC’s company class. The Teen Intensive welcomed 50 young dancers for
summer instruction in ballet, jazz, modern, Pilates, yoga and daily HSDC repertoire classes.

IN THE STUDI
HUBBARD STREET IN THE STUDIO
With school budget constraints decreasing arts exposure and experience, Hubbard Street continues to
fill the gap through programs in schools, at its studios and in the community.
HSDC’s Education & Community Programs channel the creative process of dance, helping teachers
teach and students learn. Recognized as a leader in the field, HSDC links the performing company’s
artistic mission to education, bringing communities, schools and families into the world of dance by
actively engaging them in creation, performance and reflection.
During the 2009–10 season, HSDC provided year-round arts access in partnership with 18 schools
in Chicago and Oak Park, Illinois, serving:
n
1,425 students through in-school residency programs
n
197 students through after-school programming
n
168 teachers through residencies and professional development workshops
n
5,972 students through interactive HS2 performances in schools and at the Harris Theater for
Music & Dance
In addition to the programs at schools, instruction took place at the Hubbard Street Dance Center,
with programs including:
n
Youth & Family Dance Classes, which reached more than 320 students ages 18 months to 13 years old
n
Youth Dance Camps, including Winter Break and several Summer sessions, which provided varying
levels of dance and instruction for children from kindergarten through high school
n
Lou Conte Dance Studio, which offered 70 classes each week in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip-hop/
funk, African dance, Pilates, BeMoved® and Zumba®, as well as specialized workshops and master
classes led by renowned dancers and choreographers
n
HSDC Parkinson’s Project, which helped more than 30 Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers
improve their quality of life through a remarkable program that uses dance to maintain and expand
their physical capacity

C ultural partnerships with major Chicago institutions introduce devotees of other art forms
to contemporary dance and open the eyes of audience members to the possibilities in artistic
collaboration. This season HSDC presented its seventh joint performance with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, showcasing its unparalleled choreography set to live orchestral music; expanded its
partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago into a season-long series of on-site performances,
concluding with the annual “Inside/Out” Choreographic Workshop; and deepened its relationship with
Illinois Institute of Technology School of Architecture, which presented Hubbard Street 2 dancers
performing as part of Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds exhibit.
Discover Dance© Family Workshops welcomed more than 150 families to sites across the Chicagoland
area, including the Center on Halsted (Lakeview), the Chicago Botanic Garden (North Shore), the Art
Institute of Chicago (Loop), the Chicago Children’s Museum (Navy Pier) and the Museum of Science
and Industry (Museum Campus).
Lou Conte Dance Studio hosted three open houses to invite the community to sample free classes.
Its state-of-the-art studios also served as a crucial resource via rentals to arts and entertainment
companies including Disney Entertainment, Dancing with the Stars, touring productions including
Billy Elliot the Musical, American Ballet Theatre and many more.

Hubbard Street experienced an operating deficit for FY2010 but is fortunate to have the assets and resources needed
to fund this deficit. We secured a new line of credit in fall 2009 and have also deployed unrestricted endowment
assets. The company maintains nearly $9 million in net assets, including $3 million in endowment assets, while
also owning our $5 million West Loop facility. We are pleased to report that our overall institutional deficit has been
decreased by approximately 70% this year.
