It is definitely summer time again here at the club. Although things have slowed down a little, we have many exciting events in store for you all summer long. “We Take Pride” Over the past several months the Golf Committee has been meeting to work on ways to help our Members enjoy their experience at the club even more. Many hours of thought and preparation have gone into these meetings and I would like to thank all of our Committee Members for their service to the club. Their efforts have resulted in a comprehensive information piece that will be going to every Member with golf privileges in the next few weeks. The booklet is titled “We Take Pride!” and it explains and illustrates club policies and Member responsibilities while at the club. Once the booklets are distributed the Golf Committee has requested that each golf membership review the booklet and abide by the Club’s policies. A few of the topics are: including verticutting of fairways and tees and greens aerifications. The aerification of the Tour Course in May was a tremendous success largely because this project is now done in-house and under Scott’s supervision. Each course will be aerified 3 times during the summer months but we expect significantly less interruption of play. Please see the Club’s calendar for dates. The planned bunker renovation of the Tour Course and practice facility is tentatively scheduled for an August “ground breaking”; all that remains is adding the few remaining members to “trigger” the project. Please contact Judy Roden with your candidates for membership. Summer Reciprocal Play Our Summer Reciprocal Program includes our area’s finest facilities. Please make sure to check with the golf shop prior to trying to make a time at these clubs as they have asked us to reserve the times for you. As of this date, here are the clubs you can visit this summer: • Club Dress Code • PGA National Resort and Spa • Pace of Play Policy • Ibis Golf and Country Club • “We Take Pride” on-course responsibilities for Members and guests • Doral Resort • Handicap Flag requests • Lago Mar Country Club • How to register guests, etc • La Gorce Country Club The Golf Committee appreciates your support on this and looks forward to continued growth at our club. Girls, Giggles, & Golf • Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples, FL Every Thursday • Grande Oaks Country Club Please keep an eye on your eblasts. Two GGG events per month will be in the morning and two will be in the afternoon Summer Weather With summer upon us it is important to be extra careful when playing or practicing. Our climate offers extreme heat and violent storms during the summer months. Please make sure to drink plenty of fluids and do not over extend yourself when playing or practicing. The lightning detection system is designed to inform everyone when lightning is in the area. When the siren blows you must discontinue play immediately and seek shelter. We have too many beautiful days here in Weston to take a chance on a stormy day. Maintenance Update Our Golf Course Maintenance team has been working very hard on several summer agronomic projects • Ft. Lauderdale Country Club • Polo Club of Boca Raton We will be adding clubs throughout the summer so check back regularly for updates. Also keep in mind that as a Full Privilege Member of Weston Hills you have access to every Arnold Palmer Management Company club around the country. If you plan on traveling give us a call and we will be happy to call a club for you. As a reminder you may check on daily course conditions by choosing ext. 3 when calling the golf shop. When course conditions or range conditions change we will immediately update the recording. I hope you have a wonderful summer. Stay cool! Ernie Ladies, Join us at our G, G, & G Event, designed to introduce you to the game in a fun and relaxing way. Event format is Fun, Fun & Fun. First there will be a 30min clinic, then ladies will play a fun 5 holes of golf, lastly cocktails at the Bar. $10.00+ per Member Reservations required: 954-384-4698 WHWGA 18-Holers The last day of the season was on May 11th which consisted of a four by four golf tournament (you pick your foursome of golfers and you can only play with four clubs plus the putter - sounds hard, but you’d be surprised how easy it is), giving out of the trophies & money earned during the season, as well as the induction of the 2010-2011 officers. I will enter my second term as President, Lynn Froemming - Vice President, Susan NIles - Secretary, and newly inducted Laura Descepedes - Treasurer. We have a wonderful group of women who work hard all year putting together a great season of golf as well as work on charities that give back to our community. This summer our women golfers are busy playing in Broward League, an interclub match play league. We are the defending champs and we want to keep the trophy here at Weston. The season is going well so far! In addition, many women play in Gulfstream which is for golfers with an index of 25 or lower. We play at different golf courses throughout Broward County and it’s a fun way to meet other women golfers. There is always a fun tournament or game, and of course it is followed by a great lunch. In July please check your mail for the WGA membership applications for the 2010-2011 season. As usual, membership applications will be available in the locker room, and I will put the application on the Weston Hill’s WGA website. Our golf committee has been working hard coming up with a great schedule for next year. Please contact our membership chair, Jennifer Everatt, 864-270-4488 if you have any questions. Come join us for the 2010-2011 Weston Hills Women’s Golf Association season. MARK YOUR CALENDARS Opening Day Scramble - September 21, 2010 First Play Day - September 28, 2010 Enjoy your summer! I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall! Sincerely, Lynn Stern, President WHWGA 18-Holers WHWGA 9-Holers It’s that time of year again to say goodbye to all the girls who are leaving us for the cooler parts of the US. We had a very productive year and with little problems that go with the territory. Hoping you all have a very healthy, cool summer and we are looking forward to seeing you all back at Weston this coming fall. Wherever you are going for the summer, again let me wish you a great summer, and a word of wisdom from me, KEEP COOL. Marilyn Schwartz 9 Holer President Congratulations to the 2010 Club Champions! A great way to start your day! $15 per class Intermediate Evening Clinic Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8pm Men’s Tuesday Night Doubles Dear Member, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was able to support a couple great special events we had back in April and May. Our Second Annual Wishes.Hopes.Dreams Pro/Am to benefit Schott Communities was a tremendous success due in large part to our generous sponsors including Spirit Airlines and Leiter’s Landing/Ultimate Software. This event could not have happened without the help of 16 of South Florida’s finest tennis pros who donated their time for this worthy cause – helping persons who are deaf or disabled. The pros included our very own Weston Hills professionals Caryn Moss, Frank Martinez, Jud Parker, and Terence Rosenthal. In addition, we had the privilege of having Pam Casale-Telford, formely ranked #14 in the world, who put on a heartwarming and, at times, hilarious doubles exhibition featuring three Special Olympics athletes. I want to thank the members who participated as the Amateurs and the members who helped organize the event – Liz Disney, Jill Clark, and Karen Lynch. I want to thank our tennis staff, especially Emily Reed, and the other departments around the club who helped make this event run smoothly. Our 5th Annual Tennis Awards Dinner was better than ever as we celebrated another great season and recognized our club champs and finalists, league teams and their captains, as well as some other special honorees. The food was delicious, the DJ had the dance floor packed, and a great time was had by all. My only regret is that some of those who wanted to attend had conflicts and couldn’t be there. Hopefully, next year! Of course, we have some great summer events and programs coming up too! Like our Stars and Stripes Round Robin, Saturday July 3rd. We have summer clinics going on now, including a new Wednesday evening clinic. Or get your heart-pumping and burn some calories while hitting lots of balls with our Cardio Tennis. Play doubles with old friends and make new friends in our weekly Mens and Ladies Round Robins! More details are listed below. $10pp, Beverages provided We have a great ball machine with a remote control. You can rent it by the hour or pay only $75 for unlimited use for a full year! Many clubs fail to keep the ball machine loaded with good balls, and we’ve been guilty of this in the past too. I think that is unacceptable and I guarantee that the balls in the ball machine will be good or your money back and your next rental is free. If you have the annual pass and the balls are dead you will get an extra month added to your pass. $5 per player goes into the pot - winners get a Weston Hills Tennis Gift Card! In the gym, we recently added a second Precor Elliptical machine as this has been such a popular machine. Upcoming Events As always, I invite your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to stop in, or you can reach me at (954) 384-4647, or [email protected].
