PAIGE BELTON Age: 10 • Years with TBEY: 2 I dance because I like to move and express myself and it’s just fun to do. I also want to be a choreographer when I grow up. Music inspires me to dance and seeing others dance, makes me want to dance. They are amazing, the teachers are great. Our teachers are fierce! SAMOND BUGGS Age: • Years with TBEY: 2 Hola! I love to dance because it helps me express my emotions. When I was younger I went through a lot of trials, dancing was the only way I was able to get through those trials. Ever since I started dancing and expressing myself I have become a stronger and independent young lady. Being in TBEY, I have made a new family and lots of friends. NEVAEH CAUSEY Age: 10 • Years with TBEY: 1 Dance is fun and I like and I like to dance at TBEY. My mom inspires me to dance because I would always dance around the house. The dancers and the teachers at TBEY are awesome! AARIONA HOWARD Age: 8 • Years with TBEY: 1 I dance because it is fun and cool. Music inspires me to dance. TIMMEYA KINZEY Age: 13 • Years with TBEY: 1 I dance because I like to express my feeling without talking also because I love the stage and I have always wanted to dance. My older cousin, Briana inspired me to dance—since she is a professional at ballet, if she can do it, I could too! It is a great place for myself and others to be. I thank TBEY for discipline and all! LANAJA “LALA” LUCAS Age: 13 • Years with TBEY: 5 I dance because it helps me express myself and it helps me get my mind off of things. Dancing is my passion and I’m not so sure what inspires me to dance but it has been my dream ever since I was little. I started dancing when I was two (2) years old and I’ve been dancing ever since. Once my mom found TBEY, I was so happy to be a part of it and get to dance for them. If my mom hadn’t found this company, I would have never been dancing. ADREAN MAXWELL Age: 13 • Years with TBEY: 2 I have been dancing for ten (10) years and I am a student at Lincoln Center of the Arts. I am going to be in 7th grade and I will be in the advanced dance. What makes me dance is art and it gives me life when I see the pro’s do it! What I like about TBEY is the good teachers, the costumes, and the whole TBEY family! CELESTE MCEVANS Age: 17 • Years with TBEY: 1 I was first inspired to dance when I was 4 years old, after watching the Cheetah Girls movie. I enrolled in a ballet class at the age of 10. I dance and perform because it’s one of my ways of expressing myself along with writing and singing. I love TBEY because it’s like a family. 10 • 2015 A JOURNEY THROUGH DANCE SUMMER CONCERT CAMBREE RUTLIN Age:12 • Years with TBEY: 2 I dance because I just really love to dance. I love to be on stage and when I am on stage it makes me try harder to be perfect—I am a perfectionist in some ways. What inspires me to dance is that when I dance or do gymnastics, I know that I get better, I am getting one step closer to my dream—which is owning my own studio and being very successful and having a successful competition team. I like TBEY because they challenge me. JAZZMINE SMITH Age: 9 • Years with TBEY: 1 I dance because it helps me stay active and it helps me practice for performances. I am inspired to dance simply because it gives me joy in what I do. What I like about TBEY is that the choreographers try their hardest and they are nice but when we are doing something wrong, they know how to help us do it right. DEJA REENE TRIBBLE Age:10 • Years with TBEY: 1 I dance because I have fun with it and it is something that I plan on doing in the future. I perform because I like my family and friends watching me while I perform and because I like to see what I have accomplished. What I like about TBEY is the teacher/choreographers and how the team sticks together and how they give you opportunities. ZAKIYA WILLIAMS Age: 13 • Years with TBEY: 2 I like to perform because it makes me feel better about myself and I have fun while doing it. I started at four (4) years old. Praise dancing, jazz, and hip hop. I like TBEY because the teachers believe in me which makes me work harder. CONNECT WITH US AT www.tbey.org • 11 MERQUIDES VELEZ Age: 17 • Years with TBEY: 2 To some people, dance is considered a sport or a hobby – to me; dance is a work of art. Dance is my life; it is what makes me escape from all of my obstacles. TBEY has taught me so much not only as a dancer but as a performer and entertainer also. The dedication and the enthusiasm that the instructors have is out of this world, and I am forever grateful. All you have to do is believe, try, and always remember to dance for YOURSELF and nobody else. FEATURED YOUTH CHOREOGRAPHERS KAYLENA BARNETT Age: 16 • Years with TBEY: 6 My name is Kaylena Barnett and I am 16 and a rising junior at Pius High School. I have been with TBEY for about six years and each year a new challenge comes my way and this year my challenges were more responsibility and finally getting a solo. I love TBEY so much because I have learned so much each year and become a better dancer. I know that I wouldn’t be the dancer I am today without TBEY! ESSENCE LOWRANCE Age: 17 • Years with TBEY: 2 I started dancing 15 years ago and never stopped. Many people ask “what kind of dance do you do/teach?” My response? “Everything.” Being a well-rounded dancer makes progressing in the dance world “easier.” I dance as one of the original TBEY members in 2009 and it’s great to come back not only to dance, but to share my knowledge with the kids and choreograph for the final show to showcase their progression. 12 • 2015 A JOURNEY THROUGH DANCE SUMMER CONCERT FEATURED CHOREOGRAPHERS JASMINE DAVIS-EVANS Age: 19 • Years with TBEY: 2 I am 19 years old and have been dancing 15 years and counting. Dance styles that I continue to perform are ballet, point, and Middle Eastern dance. My plan is to pursue a dance degree and become a professional dance teacher. This summer I have enjoyed this lovely experience at TBEY. CHLOE NAGLE Chloe is a dance artist investigating the relationship between practice, creative process, and performance. She has performed her work as a soloist at the American Dance Festival, and Danceworks-Milwaukee. She was recently accepted to the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign where she is looking forward to continuing her studies as an MFA in dance. She is grateful to have the opportunity to choreograph for TBEY’s energetic and very capable students. She would like to thank choreographers, faculty, and staff at TBEY for their support, encouragement, and teamwork. IMANI JALIL Age: 23 Dance has always been a means of expression for me. Dance has made me the person that I am today. The reason that I dance is simple, it makes me happy beyond words. I have enjoyed being able to teach for TBEY. I only hope to provide my students with the inspiration and the freedom to express themselves through movement. It took me many years to show people that I can become someone instead of being in the streets. I hope to be with this company for many years. JACOB KUJAWA, Production Assistant Though this is my first year with TBEY, I have been struck with dancing fever! Under the leadership of TBEY and its incredible choreographers, I have witnessed students flourish and develop themselves into who they really want to be.
