EXCLUSIVE MASTER WORKSHOP by Maestro Mario Pedone on Monday, April 19th 2010
For Serious Intermediate to advanced Accordion players – LIMITED seats AVAILABLE
Intermediate and advanced accordion players are cordially invited to participate in a four-hour Master Workshop
from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A light lunch will be served. Find out the location when you enroll.

on your own. Learn how Mario constructs a new song from the melody and chords to variations and fillers, and
how he writes out and prints his music. Find out how he prepares to create his wonderful recordings.
This Master Workshop will be presented live, with plenty of big-screen visuals, and a 60+ page handout that will
keep you learning and practicing for years to come. Participants will have first crack at Mario’s learning CDs and
workbooks, as well as commercial CDs before he offers them at the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.

MENU FOR APRIL 19, 2010 MEETING: Spaghetti
MARCH 15TH, 2010 MEETING by Raye Donatella
Happy St. Patrick's day! To start off the meeting, several members of the
Arizona Accordion Club Ensemble, Jack Dermody, Toni Dimond, Pete Donatella, Jerry Szymanski and Jay Stevens, played the pre-meeting music.
Their selections included “Irish Washer Woman,” “Sweet Rosie OʼGrady,”
“McNamaraʼs Band,” “Too-rah, Loo-rah, Loo-Ral” also sung by Jay Stevens,
“Calcutta,” “Yellow Bird” with Toni Dimond on tambourine, “My Wild Irish
Rose,” “Just Because Polka” also sung by Jay Stevens, “Twilight Time,”
“Garry Owen,” “Shanty in Old Shanty Town,”
and, of ourse, the ubiquitous “Danny Boy.” A
good start for our March meeting.
Sam Pecorilla and Bob Doszak, accompanied by Jim Winning on drums, took the stage now and played “Scott
Joplin Polka” and three other songs, but I didn't catch the
names of them. Bob Doszak did the singing. Nicely done,
guys. Leigh Dechaine played and sang “I Love You,
Arizona,” written by Rex Allen, Jr. It is usually considered Arizona's State song. Thanks, Leigh. Toni
Dimond added some diversity to the evening by playing “Laraʼs Theme” on the piano. Toni, you play the
piano beautifully.
Now it was time for the Collins boys to
play. Liam, the youngest, played first, a
pretty tune called “Spring.” Then Quinn
played a Chinese song that he didn't know
the
English name of, but which was quite nice. Back to Liam for “Moon Blossom,” then again to Quinn who played quite an intricate song titled “Wind
of Napolis.” Great job, boys! Everyone loves to hear you play! We're so glad
youʼre part of our club.Bob Torkelson entertained us with “Moonglow” followed by “Tea For Two.” Very pretty.
Let me say again here that the reason I like to list all the
songs our members play is so that
people can see the wonderful variety of songs our club presents - we
are not just a polka club, or an Italian or French or whatever club, but a club that embraces all music!
Now for one of the most amazing women in our club! Alice Rohwena,
92 years young, accompanied by her son, Neil, played “Red Wing”
and “La Golondrina.” She plays a full sized accordion, and does a masterful job of doing it!
You two are great and a joy to hear.

small investment (in time and a small donation) ever in your life for
improving your knowledge and skills on the accordion, do not miss
Mario Pedone’s workshop on the day of the next meeting – April 19
– from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Yes, FOUR HOURS of tools and skills
from one of America’s greatest accordion teachers – Mario Pedone.
And it includes lunch. You get what others pay hundreds of dollars
in order to attend a workshop by Mr. Pedone in Las Vegas or Houston. Everyone remarks that Mario’s finger velocity is hard to believe
and he will show you how he developed such techniques. You often
wonder how professional musicians are so good at inserting wonderful fillers into empty bars – Mario will share his secrets. And how
in the world he is able to be so prolific writing out music for his students and fans? He will bring his laptop and wow you with the wonders of today’s technology for arranging and composing faster and
easier than you may have imagined.
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR WORKSHOP. We specifically chose the hours
of 10-2 for this exclusive event to completely avoid the rush hours
and to still leave you plenty of time to relax before the regular
meeting begins. Seats are very limited,
so please call me at 602-237-5627 to reserve your spot.

How to Take Care of Your Accordion
Do not leave your accordion in heat or direct sunlight.
Also, don’t leave your accordion inside your car. This is
especially important in Arizona or anywhere with hot
weather. Likewise, don’t leave it in cold weather. Ideally,
your accordion should be in room temperature.
Do not leave your accordion in damp or humid places.
Don’t play your accordion in the rain or near the ocean,
or leave it near a water fountain or swimming pool.
Try to avoid dusty or smoky environments, as this can
clog up the reeds.
If you are coming inside from the cold, give your accordion some time to warm up to room temperature before
playing. Whenever you come in from extreme temperatures, let it stand for one hour or more as needed. A
trick to acclimate it to room temperature faster once
you’re inside is to hold the air button and pump it. This
moves air inside without playing the reeds.
Gently place your accordion in its case, keyboard first
and facing up, making sure it does not fall very far. Do
not grab by the keys or crush any of the bass buttons.
Keep your accordion upright at all times, except in rare
situations, on the four “feet” on the bottom.
Do not pick up the accordion by its straps. Always pick it
up by the body with both hands.
Do not wear any bulky jewelry such as chains, tie
clasps, brooches, etc. Keep a back pad on the accordion to protect it from belts, zippers, and buttons.
Keep your accordion in its case whenever it is not in
use. Keep the case closed around pets so they don’t
soil the inside.
When driving or riding in a car, keep your accordion on
a seat rather than putting in it the trunk or on the floor.
Remember not to leave it in your car, or else it will be
damaged by weather.
While playing, do not force the bellows too hard. It takes
a month or so for a new accordion to condition itself.
Continuously playing it forcefully and loudly will shorten
its lifespan.
Carry the case with the lid side next to you in case it
accidentally opens.
If you ever travel by airplane with an accordion, put adequate cushioning inside your case, as airplane packages get thrown around.

The Arizona Accordion Club
Our lead-in for the headliner of the evening were Jack Dermody and Dr. Howard Van Orden. They presented two of
Lawrence Welkʼs Theme songs, “Champagne Time” and
“Bubbles In the Wine.”
What a nice way to present our special guest, Tim Padilla.
Tim Padilla, or Little Timmy as he is known in some circles,
started off with a Lawrence Welk polka, then moved on to
“Dizzy Fingers,” then “Gypsy Rendezvous,” and from his
younger years “Magnolia Waltz” and “Chatterbox,” which he played at various degrees of speed, and went on to play a clever rendition of “Dueling Banjos,” during
which he played both parts - first with his bass side, then the keyboard side of his accordion! Really neat! The “William Tell Overture” was next, followed by “All Of Me,”
which he also sang, even including a chorus sung as “Satchmo.” The next was pretty
darn neat, an original song called “Little Timmy's Boogie” during which he actually laid
down on his back on the stage with his accordion still on while he was playing and
got back up on his feet! Us older folks who have a difficult time getting up off of a
chair were really impressed with that!! “Flight of the Bumblebee” was next, and then he played “Dipsy Doodle,” which he
claims as the most difficult tune he has ever played, because it was also the first tune he ever played. A beautiful job of
“Amazing Grace” was next, finishing up with “Beer Barrel Polka” and “Under the Double Eagle.” Great job, Tim.
That was a real treat. Branson is lucky to have you.
Dr. Howard Van Orden
came up to play a Lawrence Welk medley, then
did “And There I'll Be” and
finished up with “The Lost
Chord.”
He was accompanied by Tom Lynch on drums. Very pretty.
Paul Betken played “Feels So Good” and “There'll Never Be Another You,” both beautifully
done. Thanks, Paul.
“Paddyʼs Peg Leg Band” finished up the show with Chris Floyd on guitar, Bill Roussell on accordion, Larry Earlywine on fiddle, and Jim Bidle on the bodhran.
They played a variety of Irish music for a nice ending to our St. Patrick's Day show. I won't
even attempt to name the songs they played, but they were Irish! Thanks, gentlemen!
Time for my
monthly
“as my Dad always said” gem “The mightiest
oak in the forest
is just a little nut
that held its
ground!”
See you on April
19th.
