2016 Summer Program Guide SOUTHWEST YMCA Parents and kids agree: when it comes to summer time fun, nobody offers an experience like the Y. The Y’s summer programs are all about adventure, healthy fun, personal growth, friendships and lasting memories. In Day Camp, children can enjoy traditional summer activities like swimming, arts and crafts, sports and field trips, and learn new skills through our specialty programs. Through Overnight Camps at Camp Campbell, children enjoy life-changing experiences while participating in nature hikes, campfires, archery and other outdoor activities. In addition, the Y offers a number of other summer options to provide enriching experiences for children of all ages and abilities. 2 SOUTHWEST YMCA Kids love the Y’s summer programs because they’re fun. DAY CAMP BASICS • Talk with your child to see what fits his or her interest. • All camps are designed to meet the needs of all campers, regardless of swimming, skill or endurance level. • For a traditional day of camp, we recommend signing up for Discovery and Explorer camps. • To have a specialized camp experience, try our specialty and sports camps. • Refer to our Summer Planner for the specific age group for each week. • Register your child in a variety of camps for exposure to different opportunities. What we provide: PARENT ORIENTATION AND MEET OUR DAY CAMP STAFF Date Wednesday, June 8 Time 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm Location Southwest YMCA Meet your child’s summer camp leaders. Parents will have the opportunity to ask questions. Campers are encouraged to attend. For your child’s safety, you must present your government-issued picture identification every day when you pick up your child. Pick-up time is 6:00 pm. Our specialized camps will help your child get the most out of his/her summer. This camp features an action-packed week with daily trips to the Bay Area’s top attractions and theme parks, including Great America and Raging Waters. This is the perfect opportunity for campers who like to stay on the go and seek out new thrills. In this fun-filled camp, your child will spend two hours each day learning basic clay techniques including pinching, coiling, slabbing and glazing from certified instructors at a ceramics studio. Over the course of the week, each camper will complete four glaze-fired ceramic works and paint their pieces on the last day of camp. Ceramic pieces will be ready to be picked up 2-3 weeks after the camp ends. Families will be contacted by our Y Camp Staff when projects are available for pick-up. Take part in the ultimate game of strategy! In this camp, we explore the game’s intricate strategies and tactics, under the guidance of a chess expert. Campers will play chess daily and participate in a chess tournament at the end of the week. This camp is appropriate for both beginning and more experienced chess players. Campers receive 2.5 hours per day of instruction from our certified Chess instructors. Campers will learn to walk the tightrope, juggle, ride a fun-cycle, balance on a giant ball and perform circus acrobatics. Come clown around with us and have a great time. This camp teaches kids the framework of magic and the art of performance; including hand-eye coordination, public speaking, humor, prop making, costuming, and character work. Campers will put on a magic performance at the end of the week for family and friends. Designates a traveling camp Location June 13–17 NEW John Muir Elementary Fee$275 Campers team up to learn about different superheroes, then create their own superpowers through their own imaginations. Activities include creating their superhero costume and building a superhero city. Then our superheroes go on field trips to Pump It Up and to the Jungle, where they go from one obstacle to the next. Campers display their own superpowers at the end of the week. This camp includes an additional waiver, please view our camp webpage to obtain the needed waiver. swymca.org 11 DAY CAMP Camps for Grades 1st–3rd SPORTS DAY CAMPS Whether your child is new to sports, a seasoned vet, or somewhere in-between, our Sports Camps are the perfect destination for every child who enjoys playing sports and being active. Our focus in on helping our campers of all skill levels develop fundamentals, teamwork, self-confidence and new skills, while also leaving time for campers to enjoy a variety of other activities, crafts and summer fun. BASKETBALL Dates Location June 20–24 NEW John Muir Elementary Fee$275 Our basketball camp helps players of all levels maximize their potential and pursue their love of basketball. Campers will work on improving their hand-eye coordination, ball handling, proper shooting techniques, various defensive/offensive plays, communication skills and teamwork. BADMINTON Dates Location July 18–22 NEW John Muir Elementary EQUESTRIAN Dates Location July 11–15 August 1–5 NEW Fee $595 per week Giddy on up! Horse lovers have the opportunity to spend three hours per day learning the intricacies of riding, caring for these gentle giants, including care/grooming techniques, safety, equipment and stall maintenance from certified instructors. Riding gear (including helmets) is provided. Campers must wear closed-toe shoes, breeches or jeans (no shorts). GOLF Dates Location July 25–29 NEW Campers travel to a local golf course daily for 2.5 hours of golf instruction by a certified golf instructor. Daily lessons include golf etiquette, putting, chipping, half and full swing on the driving range, proper club selection, and basic scoring. This camp includes an additional waiver, please view our camp webpage to obtain the needed waiver. GYMNASTICS Experience the fun of badminton! We teach campers the fundamentals, techniques and rules of badminton, with a focus on skill development and team-building. Campers receive 1.5 hours of instruction daily from certified instructors and will also have the opportunity to participate in mini-games and competitions. No experience is required and bumper lanes are available for those new to bowling. Gymnasts receive two hours per day of instruction by certified gymnastics instructors in core gymnastic skills including balance beam, uneven bars, and floor exercise. Campers will also learn important stretching/flexibility techniques. This camp includes an additional waiver, please view our camp webpage to obtain the needed waiver. Campers will be moderately to vigorously active for 3-4 hours a day. This camp includes a daily 40-minute swim lesson by our certified instructors who teach basic techniques and water safety skills. Campers also play structured water games and enjoy recreational swim time. All campers must bring a swimsuit and towel each day, and will be tested to determine their swim level. In this camp, your child will learn the basic fundamentals and strategies of soccer, such as passing, dribbling, trapping, heading and shooting. Campers also participate in scrimmages throughout the week to shape their skills and enjoy the thrill of competition. This camp includes an additional waiver, please view our camp webpage to obtain the needed waiver. In this camp, kids will enjoy and explore the fun-filled world of rock climbing. Campers will learn basic climbing techniques, while building confidence and strength on the climbing wall. Campers climb two hours each day under the guidance of certified belayers and instructors who teach campers techniques, strategy and endurance, with a strong emphasis on safety. No previous climbing experience is needed. Campers need to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants are recommended. Location $328 per week Fee$396 Dates NEW Fee$345 ROCK CLIMBING Location Location July 11–15 John Muir Elementary Avoid the summer heat by hitting the ice. With hour-long daily lessons from a certified instructor, followed by practicing skills during recreational skating. This camp helps children of all skill levels learn and improve their skating fundamentals. Skates are provided. Campers are asked to pursue four activity areas they are passionate about. Progressive: Throughout the week campers develop their skills and abilities in these four activity areas. We offer a six-day, fivenight program to introduce campers to camp and our program, and to get them ready for the full two weeks of camp. CABIN LIFE One of the best parts of camp is meeting new people and spending time together as a cabin. In cabins, campers of similar ages live together and learn to make lasting friendships. Campers develop camaraderie with their cabin mates and counselors as they learn to make decisions as a group. Our staff are positive adult role models that help campers take responsibility for themselves and others, work together to solve problems, and have fun at camp. MEALS Our dining hall features wholesome, kid-friendly food. Meals are a great time to meet new campers and counselors and to learn a sense of responsibility. PRESCHOOL LESSONS GATOR SWIM TEAM Preschool swim lessons are designed for children ages 3–5. The goal of this program is to teach children to become accustomed to the water and learn basic water safety. If you want to take your passion for swimming to the next level, join the Southwest YMCA Gator Swim Team. The Gator Swim Team is open to youth ages 6–17 who meet the minimum requirements. Tryouts are required. We encourage current swim lesson participants to join the Gator Swim Team after completing at least one session of the advanced youth level. YOUTH LESSONS Youth swim lessons teach children ages 6–14 stroke techniques, build endurance, and develop water safety techniques. Our instructor-to-student ratios are 1:5 for Parent/Child and Preschool classes and 1:8 for Youth and Adult classes. Minimum requirements Must be able to swim at least 50 yards of freestyle (with side breathing), backstroke, and breaststroke, and at least 25 yards of the butterfly stroke. We provide recreational, competitive and specialty water activities for all ages and abilities, including parent-child classes, water exercise and therapy, and water safety and rescue. Adult Beginner/Intermediate Youth and adults gain a sense of self-esteem when they learn to swim or improve aquatic skills. Water is a relaxing environment for effective exercise, physical therapy, skill development, and stress release, as well as family fun. Our lifeguards are scheduled during pool hours to enforce facility rules, prevent accidents, handle emergency situations, and ensure your safety. POOL Our year-round indoor pool is one of the main attractions for our members. The pool is 25 yards long, with five lanes (approximately 35 feet wide). It is kept at a comfortable temperature to accommodate all members participating in a variety of programs. The pool depth ranges from 3½ feet to 4½ feet. Be sure to read and follow pool guidelines and to shower before entering the water. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. If you have a fear of the water or simply never learned the fundamentals, our 3½- to 4½-foot indoor lap pool is a great place to begin. We offer a supportive class environment with an emphasis on skill development, safety and form. WATER FITNESS CLASSES Have fun while exercising in the water.
