LOWER AUSTRIA INTERNATIONAL
SCHOOL
Dear Student,
As the headmistress of the Lower Austrian International School, I am very pleased
to invite you to attend and thrive in our school community.
For 27 years I have been working in the Austrian education system. 12 years ago a
team of teachers and I started a new school project where you may receive a dual
qualification – the Higher School Certificate (GCE - A-level) and professional training
twice a day in competitive sports. This young school is currently an IB Candidate
School offering the International Baccalaureate Program (IB diploma). No matter
which national or international school you come from, you will have an excellent
preparation for admission to the finest colleges and universities all over the world.
We believe academic education, sports, culture and social behaviour are integral
parts of school life and much time is devoted to associate these areas. We are
looking forward to having open communication with the parents, the trainers and
the educators of the boarding school to create best possible conditions for our
students. Our aim is to bring out the full potential in each one of our athletes.
My educational background in Mathematics and Geography, studied at the
University of Vienna, allow me to understand the rigors our students undertake on a
daily basis. Our program is designed to help them undertake their educational
responsibilities while excelling athletically.
Please accept my personal invitation to attend the Lower Austria International
School, and receive an unmatched education and athletic experience.
Best regards
Mag. Gabriele Schletz
Headmistress, Lower Austria International School

each student's self-confidence and self-discipline.

• Opportunity to graduate with an International Baccaleaureat (IB) Diploma or the
Austrian Matura (Austrian High School Diploma)

growing up in Toronto, Canada where he rose through the minor
hockey ranks before receiving a Hockey Scholarship to Michigan
Technological University. After finishing second in the 1974
NCAA championships Elias went on to enjoy a successful 15 year
European professional career including winning the German

GARY PRIOR
Academy Head Coach
Gary is the Academy's Head-Coach. He grew up and played his
minor hockey in Montreal, Quebec, before attending the
University of Vermont where he is a member of the school’s
Athletic Hall of Fame. Upon graduation, he headed first for
Germany and then on to Finland to play professionally. He
‘retired’ early in order to seize an opportunity to start his
coaching career in Finland’s second highest league. Since then,
his travels have taken him and his family to seven different
countries in Europe, reaching the highest levels in Finland,
Germany and Italy. Along the way, he also managed to pick up
the German and Finnish languages. While Gary teaches mainly the North American
style of hockey, he appreciates the different styles played in all the top hockeyplaying countries and seeks to blend the best aspects of each into his coaching. In
his 25 years of experience, he counts the development of young players as one of
his most rewarding accomplishments with many of them going on to successful
careers both in professional hockey as well as outside the game.

Education:
Q8: How do the teaching standards/expectations in Austria compared with those in
the United States and Canada?
A8:
Teaching standards/expectations in Austria are comparable to those in Germany
and Switzerland. They are typically higher than at U.S. High Schools. At the
Lower Austria International School (L.A.I.S.) students can graduate after 4 years
with an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or with the Austrian “Matura”
(Abitur) Diploma, depending on their academic profile. This prepares our
students for university and college entrance around the world. Unlike North
American High School programs, students do not follow a course system but a
class system, which requires students to pass all subjects in order to move up a
grade level.
Q9: Will you bet testing the players to see whether they qualify academically?
A9:
There will be academic testing for students who meet the formal criteria to
attend Grade 9 High-School or above. In addition each player will be assessed
and have an interview with the school principal/staff during our Welcome Camp
in Spring, where the latest academic reports will be reviewed and other aspects
of the education program can be discussed face-to-face. We strongly suggest
that any non native English speaking boy interested in attending the Lower
Austrian International School prepares by learning as much English as possible
before entering the program which will greatly help him achieve better
academic results. Passing the OHAE ESL (English as a Second Language) Course
subsequent to attending the Welcome and Try-Out camp may be required in in
order to qualify for the program. Please contact us in case of questions.
Q10: How many students will be in each class? Will the classes only include the
hockey players or will other athletic students be in these classes too?
A10: There will be a maximum of 24 students per class; The international track
(delivered in English) will be only attended by players of the Hockey Academy,
all national education programs which are also offered at the school are
attended by all other athletes.
