Sopas de Carne Festa
For the Festa, 400 pounds of shoulder beef
are trimmed and sliced. Special spices are
added to the meat. It is then cooked for 10
to 12 hours. Meanwhile, cabbage is cooked,
the special soup is prepared and French
bread is sliced and placed in pans. Others
will set up tables and chairs in the Parish
Center to feed 600 people in the evening
meal on November the 8th.

All Saints ~ All Souls
THE LAST THINGS
No one really likes to think about the last of anything, particularly the last days of our lives. Yet
there is a side to our nature that is drawn to thoughts
of the end of life at this time of the year. We're beginning the last month of the church year and the
second-to-last month of the calendar year. Night falls
earlier and earlier each day. Leaves fall from the
trees, leaving branches that look dead. Skies are
gray. It is November. The Church uses these waning
days and darker skies as the season to remind us of
the last things.
Saturday's feast, the Solemnity of All Saints, is
the centerpiece of three days that point to doctrines
we proclaim each time we say the Nicene Creed:
"We believe in the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting!" And while
the days and our hearts may be dark, scripture is
bright with the light of faith.
John's vision in the book of Revelation reveals
dazzling angels and white-robed saints gathered in
triumph around the throne of God. This is our hope.
sorrowing, lowly, hungry for holiness, merciful, single-hearted, peacemakers, and persecuted.
Yesterday we celebrate the triumph of those who
already gaze on the face of God. Today we cry out
for mercy with those in purgatory, who, like us on
earth, still long to see God's face.
LOOKING TO THE LAST DAY
Today the Church remembers all who have
walked the way of Christ and passed from this life.
The readings all look to the last day, when we shall
all rise from the dead and be reunited.
The prophet Daniel announces words of warning
and welfare. He cautions us against the judgment to
come, but he also comforts us and assures us that all
who live a life of virtue and justice will find life eternal.
The reading from Romans reminds us that, because of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection and
our entrance into that paschal mystery through baptism, we now share in the new life won by Christ.
This recognition has repercussions: we need to live
righteously now, that we might rise to life forever
with Christ on the last day.
This is God's promise. Then in Matthew 5 we read
Jesus' formula for saint-making. "You will be
blessed," we are told: blessed if we are poor in spirit,
In the Gospel Jesus pledges that all the Father has
given him will not be lost. All the faithful will be
raised to joy and live forever in the presence of God.

Liturgy 101: All Souls
The solemnity of All Souls
comes as a sequel to that of All
Saints. Having commemorated all
the blessed who enjoy the face of
God in their death, we turn our
thoughts to the other souls who
await the fullness of God’s glory.
These are the dead we remember
every November 2nd—members of
our families, friends, the lonely and
forgotten, and public figures who
have touched our lives. On this day
we pray that God will have mercy
on them and grant them the vision
of blessedness for which they
longed.
The liturgy for this day still offers three Masses. When the church
created this feast in the middle ages, it became so popular that priests
were given the unusual permission
to celebrate three Masses that day.
The permission remains, as do the
separate texts for the Masses, even
though not every parish takes advantage of the permission. The
readings are drawn from the collection of texts we use for funerals.
When the church gathers for
prayer on November 2, we still remember the faithful departed, even
when it falls on a Sunday. Those
who assisted us in life receive assistance from us in their death. This
feast celebrates our union with the
church in every place and beyond
all time .

This is the breakdown:

hildren's Liturgy of the Word - During the
9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass, K through 4th graders are
invited to attend Children's Liturgy of the Word. We
are presently seeking adults and teens to share the Gospel message with these children. If you are interested in
this ministry, please join the children to see what we're
all about! To be a presider at Children's Liturgy of the
Word, we ask that you volunteer for one Sunday each
month (or every other month) to work
with another presider to bring the Gospel message to the children. We plan
the discussions and activities ahead of
time at our planning meetings. The presiders for Kindergarten meet the second
Tuesday of each month in the Fireside
Lounge at 7:30 p.m. The presiders for
the 1st & 2nd graders meet the first Monday of the month
and the presiders for the 3rd & 4th graders meet the third
Monday of the month in the Fireside Lounge at 7:30
p.m. Our next meetings are Nov 4th (K) – changed
because of Holiday, Nov. 3rd (1/2) and Nov. 17th
(3/4). We ask that you consider giving your time to the
youth of our parish. The rewards are heavenly!!! For

14 catechists attended the One Day Congress held on October 18th. About 14 of them
will attend the 2-Day Conference in Santa
Clara on November 21st and 22nd. Last but not
least, about 30 youth and adult catechists desire to attend the Los Angeles Religious Congress in March 2015.
Formation is expensive and we want to provide the best opportunities available to our catechists to ensure that they share their faith in
ways that inspire our children to be Spirit-filled
and become Disciples of Christ in our midst.
We want to foster in our children the desire
to enter into a personal relationship with
Christ, to attend Mass often, to make them the
leaders of our community, to assist them in
converting us, their parents, and inspire us to
follow first, then become disciples ourselves of
Christ who freely offered His life so we could
have access to salvation.
The Raffle ticket is only $10 and the Pasta
Feed ticket is $6. Get yours and may you enjoy
the TV this oncoming Holiday season.

We hit a grand slam with the 36 people who registered and the 30 who were eligible to donate
blood. Our parish was able to help supply over
50 local hospitals with enough blood to help 90
patients! Thank you to all who took the time to
give blood. Your efforts will truly help save
lives! Our next blood drive is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 22nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the
Small Hall.
