General Instructions
Making the fused applique blocks :
These instructions are for raw-edge fused applique.
Those who wish to make this project using the
traditional turned-under applique techniques will need
to add 1/8” to 3/16” around all the pieces according
to their preferred method.
1. First trace the applique shapes onto the paper side
of the fusible web. (Note: Templates are provided in
reverse so they will be right-reading when fused. This
is not an issue with most of the pieces since they are
bilaterally symmetrical. The stem F is the only shape that
isn’t.)
2. Cut the fusible paper pieces out loosely, leaving
at least 1/4” around the outside edges. Place the
fusible web pattern pieces on the wrong side of
their respective fabrics. Fuse to fabric following
manufacturer’s instructions for time and temperature.
Fuse

pieces

G
3. Cut the fused pieces out carefully along the traced
lines. Remove the paper backing.
4. Place fusible-backed appliques on their respective
8 1/2” square background fabric using positioning
guides. Note that the corner quarter circle pieces
are simply aligned along the opposing edges of
the fabric square. Fuse the corner pieces first to
give you a reference point for positioning the other
pieces. (Figures 1.) The corner applique pieces
include 1/4” seam allowances that will get sewn
into the seam. Make sure to follow manufacturer’s
recommendations on heat and time when fusing.
5. Before sewing all four sub-blocks together, use a
decorative stitch to go around the appliques to
give the raw edge a finishing touch. It’s easier
to turn the fabric under your needle for smoother
curves when you are working with smaller pieces.
The only applique pieces you might want to finish
with a decorative stitch after sewing the four subblocks together is around the circle the G appliques
in Block A and the I appliques in Block B make.
(Figures 2 & 3)
6. Prepare as many A and B blocks as needed for
your chosen project in the manner described above.
