Joel Clark acquired a passion for athletics at a very young age. As a child he was exposed to a wide variety of sports, both on field
and ice. Upon graduating from Lyndon State College, Joel immediately began his work at Hunter Montessori School. He soon
initiated a sports program teaching soccer and flag football in the fall and floor hockey and basketball during the winter. In the spring,
Joel and his students were consumed on the field by Lacrosse and Frisbee Golf with a “once in a while” batting challenge of Whiffle
Ball. Joel stated that he’s been a sports enthusiast his entire life and proudly claims to be especially fond of the NHL Boston Bruins.
Joel is confident that he can bring energy, excitement and creativity to the newly formed “Sports Camp” at Lakeridge this summer.
He looks forward to working with a small elite group of campers!

ONE WEEK ONLY!
th
Aug. 25th - 29 , from 9:05 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Here is what to expect during a typical week of Forest Camp:
Your child will learn about nature by getting dirty as they come nose to nose with the mysteries of the forest. Hikes and
scavenger hunts on our newly blazed walking trails will add to the excitement! Wilderness projects and learning outdoor
survival skills such as building a shelter, starting a campfire by using two pieces of wood and learning how to “hide &
sneak” invisibly through the woods….CAMOUFLAGE, is what Forest Camp is all about! Your camper will also enjoy,
searching the perimeter of Ridge Pond for “Pond Life”…creatures and plants. Campers will have fun creating nature art
and playing games that apply the skills that are learned throughout the day. Meeting new friends, storytelling and
swimming, singing and learning to understand the secret language of the birds is also what makes Forest Camp the unique
program that it is!
Meet Our Camp Director, Justin Pegnataro
Justin mentored graduate students in teaching environmental education at the Yale School of Forestry, and coordinated an
experiential science program in New Haven. He holds B.S. degrees in both anthropology and biology, and has been
teaching children about nature for the past twelve years. We are excited to welcome Justin to Lakeridge as he brings his
passion for nature and powerful commitment to our community.

COMPOSTING AT THE LAKERIDGE GARDENS
To All Gardeners:
PLEASE do not put weeds, old plants or garbage refuse into the composition balls. They are the big
black round balls. The following will explain what to PUT and NOT to put into them.
PLEASE PUT INTO the bins that are marked, PUT IN: Raw fruit and vegetable waste from your
kitchen (peals, cores, skin, rinds, husks, leaves, etc.), crushed egg shells, coffee grinds and dried leaves
from the forest.
PLEASE DO NOT put into the Bins: Any cooked food or raw protein such as meat or fish, weeds,
old plants and garbage of any kind.
‘
Compositing biodegradable materials help to reduce waste products that clog landfills and contributes
to the health and prosperity of our garden by enriching the soil nutrients.
There will be signs on the polls in front of each Big Black Ball with a number. The signs will state
PUT IN - takes a few weeks to compost and we will change the sign when ready. TAKE OUT - You
may use the compost that is in the bin. Please make sure when you put in or take out that the cover is
tightly closed. DO NOT TOUCH - do not open the compost is cooking.
Keep a large plastic or coffee can with a lid on your kitchen counter, next to your cutting board or sink
for convenience. Please take a moment to cut the larger pieces (melon rinds, corn cob) into smaller,
approx 1" chunks. When it is full, come on up to the garden and put it into the bin that says PUT IN.
Please remember that your help is optional and very much appreciated.
If there are any questions on composting or the garden, please call the West Lodge, 860-482-9463.
Don't forget the Food Bank Garden is plot B2. If you have extra plants, please put them in an empty
spot through the black plastic. It would be appreciated if you would label what you planted.
When the produce starts coming, Sue Romanoff Warsoff will be bringing all to the Fish Food Bank in
Torrington. For those of you that did not check off that she can pick if ripe on Mondays, you can leave
your excess produce on the picnic bench on Sunday or early Monday morning so Sue can donate
anything you can't use. If you would like her to pick on a week when you are not at Lakeridge, you can
contact Sue with your plot number.
We hope to see everyone on August 23 at 5 p.m. at the Garden Supper Party .
