MEETING MINUTES May 3, 2016
Call to Order: President Richard Fox called the meeting to order at 6:00pm and welcomed the
31 members and 1 guest who were present.
Minutes: The minutes of the April membership meeting as e-mailed to the club membership
were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Steve Primavera presented the Treasurer’s Report through
April 30th which was unanimously approved.
Membership: Membership Chairman Jim Martin stated that we have 77 members who have
paid their 2016 dues to-date. He has sent out a request for a short biography to the newer
members and will gradually make the same request to the more tenured members.
National Corvette Museum: NCM Ambassador Don Paulson presented the following:
• 4 new colors for the 2017 Corvettes were announced at the NCM Bash and a sample of
each color car was on display.
• The pricing for the new 2017 Grand Sport was announced which will be available for sale
this summer.
• The Corvette plant gets $439 Million investment for substantial technology upgrades that
are planned to begin this summer.
Check out the NCM Ambassador’s report posted in the club newsletter and on the club
website for further details.
Old Business:
 April 9th: A number of members participated in the Azalea Festival by driving various
dignitaries in the parade including Miss Carolina. A suggestion was made to look into
doing this as a club function next year.
 April 16th: No members attended the Vettes Doin Charleston show held in Charleston,
SC. This event was organized by the Coastal Carolina Corvette Club.
 April 22nd: 11 cars participated in the NCCAR Track Day. Everyone had the opportunity
to drive multiple laps on the track and enjoyed the experience. It was recommended that
this venue be continued as an official annual event and the possibility of holding it again
this Fall. It was also recommended that we use the early start to the event that was used
this year to avoid the forecasted upcoming rain.
New Business:
 May 7th: The cruise to Duplin Winery is planned leaving at 11:00am sharp right after
Cars & Coffee. We will meet and leave from the K-Mart parking lot near Burger King.
Bill Bordwine stated that 17 cars have signed-up. Check out the flyer that was sent out
for details.
 May 11th: CFC visits Wilmington Health & Rehabilitation Center. A flyer was sent out
May 4th with all the details. Realizing that this is a week day, please plan to participate
for this special event if at all possible. It is a real morale booster for these veterans,
many who are “car guys”.
 May 21st: The annual Rims on the River Vintage Car & Hot Rod Show is being held.
Anyone attending wanting to join-up for lunch can meet at Elijah’s Restaurant at noon.
 May 22nd: Caro-Vettes NCCC Sanctioned Corvette Show (date change from May 15th) to
be held at Marine Chevy, Jacksonville, NC. Anyone attending wanting to caravan to the
show should meet Gordon Boyd at Harris Teeter, Porters Neck and be prepared to leave

at 8:00am. This is a “people’s choice” event so you do not have to have your Vette
judged.
May 23rd: Cruise-In at Peter’s Speed Shop, North Kerr Industrial Park. Check-out the
Newsletter for details.
June 4th: 21st Annual “Corvettes at Myrtle Beach” show. We will be caravanning leaving
from the Harris Teeter, Leland. Details to follow.
June 18th: The 13th annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival will be held in historic
downtown Burgaw. Lots of venue choices, check out their website.
June 22nd: Our first “Hump Day” cruise and dine for 2016 with dinner at Rucker Johns
and a cruise around Greenfield Lake. More info to follow.
Sept 24th: CFC Annual Car Show update.
 The judging will be less rigorous, quicker and more streamlined.
 The Silent Auction will consist of 25 to 30 high quality items. Those members that
plan on donating items are requested that the item be new or like new and Corvette
themed. As an alternative, it is requested that instead of the donating the usual
cleaning items that a cash donation be made so larger, higher quality Corvette
items can be purchased. No items will be accepted at the day of the show.
The next meeting will be held June 7th and will start promptly at 6:00pm. We need to
conclude by 7:30pm. Three local restaurants have been designated for our “after meeting”
dinner. Recommendations for an alternative are always encouraged.
Meeting adjourned 6:50pm.

President’s Message
Dear Cape Fear Corvettes Members,
I would like to give a big thank you to everyone that helped make our first trip to NCCAR
a successes. Although we had some weather issues to contend with we still managed to get
in about 45 minutes of spirited driving for each group. Our Corvettes outperformed most of
the drivers with no mechanical or "off road" mishaps. We learned a great deal about our
cars and our driving abilities that improved with each lap on the two mile course.
For those fortunate driver participants, please help spread the word about the great time
we all had. There is nothing I enjoy more with my Corvette than testing the limits on a nice
track with no chance of a speeding ticket.
I hope we can make this into an annual event!
My recent acquisition of a 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette led me to this article written
by John P. Huffman for Edmonds. I thought you might enjoy their opinion of some of the
Greatest Corvettes ever Built. Is yours on the list?
100 Greatest Chevrolets of All Time
There's nothing more American than Chevrolet. For 100 years, Chevy and its bowtie logo
have defined American motoring, both on the street and on the racetrack. Founded by
famous racecar driver Louis Chevrolet and ousted GM founder William C. Durant on
November 3, 1911, the car company has now seen 10 decades of success. In 1913, its
famous bowtie logo was adopted after Durant liked a wallpaper pattern with a similar
design in a French hotel. At least that's how the story goes. Two years later, Louis Chevrolet
had differences with Durant and sold Durant his share of the company. A year later,
Chevy's profits financed Durant's repurchase of General Motors. He became President of
GM, and Chevrolet was immediately merged into GM in 1918.
In celebration of Chevy's 100th birthday we've drawn up this list of the greatest Chevys
ever, the 100 cars that have done the most to build up Chevrolet's place in automotive
culture.
Listed below is a partial list of just the Corvettes. So counting down lets start with #99.
99. 1971 Corvette ZR2: Only 12 of these race-ready 'Vettes were built with 425-hp, LS6 454
big-block V8s under their hoods.
86. 1969 Corvette ZL-1: Only two Corvettes were built with the all-aluminum 427-cubicinch ZL-1 big-block
V8. Output may have been as much as 585 hp. Zora Arkus-Duntov claimed 10.5-second
quarter-mile times on slicks.
77. 1999 Corvette C5.R: The Corvette that won Le Mans — three times in its class. Built by
Pratt & Miller Engineering and campaigned by Corvette Racing. It's still competitive in the
hands of privateers.
76. 2005 Corvette C6.R: Successor to the C5.R, it has dominated the American Le Mans
Racing series. And continued to win at Le Mans itself, taking GT1 class wins in 2005, 2006,
2009 and 2011.
71. 2001 Corvette Z06: The notchback body version of the C5 didn't make much sense until
it was fortified with a 5.7-liter LS6 V8 making 385 hp. One of the most satisfying
production Vettes ever built.
69. 1965 Corvette 396: The first big-block V8-powered Corvette had a massive 425 hp
thumping from its 396-cubic-inch engine. It refocused Corvette performance and spelled
the end for the Rochester mechanical fuel-injection system.
64. 2006 Corvette Z06: With its 505-hp 7.0-liter LS7 small-block V8, this was the quickest
Corvette built up to that time. It's still one of the world's great track cars.
57. 1970 Corvette LT-1: Small-block performance returns to the Corvette with the 370-hp
350-cubic-inch LT-1. The same engine was used in the 1970 Camaro Z/28.
56. 1953 Corvette: The first Corvette wasn't much more than a fiberglass body atop a
chopped-down standard Chevy chassis. It only had a six-cylinder engine, but it started a
legend.
47. 1963 Corvette Grand Sport: Born to be Zora Arkus-Duntov's ultimate Corvette, the
Grand Sport was tube framed and powered by 377-cubic-inch small-block V8. Only five
were built before GM killed the program — three roadsters and two coupes.
43. 1957 Corvette Fuel Injection: Zora Arkus-Duntov's nurturing pays off as the Rochester
fuel-injected 283 small-block V8 makes 283 hp. It's the first Corvette that's truly high
performance.
38. 1984 Corvette C4: With its aluminum suspension pieces and space-age digital dash,
the C4 made Corvette relevant again. Sure it rode like a rock, but it outhandled any
Porsche, Ferrari or Lotus at the time.
36. 1956 Corvette SR-2: Using chassis components proven at Sebring, this "Special Racing"
was Zora Arkus-Duntov's first aero-aware Corvette. It didn't win much, but set the stage for
all the specialized Corvettes to come.
34. 1957 Corvette SS: The first Super Sport was the 1957 Corvette SS concept car that
never saw production. A magnesium body kept weight down, but trapped heat in. Power
came from a small-block V8 rated at 307 hp.
33. 1965 Corvette Mako Shark II: Concept car fore showed the revolutionary 1968 Corvette
and the body style that would remain in production until 1982.
32. 1959 Stingray Prototype: The Stingray was officially neither a Chevrolet nor a Corvette
to circumvent the GM racing ban. Dick Thompson drove it to an SCCA national title in
1961. And it led directly to the 1963 Corvette (two words) Sting Ray.
25. 1967 Corvette 427 L88: A functional hood scoop, aluminum heads, a massive Holley
850 carburetor and a ridiculous 430-hp rating. Five-hundred fifty hp was more like it.
19. 1997 Corvette C5: With its backbone chassis and rear-mounted transmissions, the C5
is a Corvette that competes with the world's best. Power comes from a 345-hp LS1 smallblock V8.
17. 1955 Corvette: When the Corvette got V8 power in its third year, it was suddenly a
viable sports car, even though the 265-cubic-inch small-block V8 only made 195 hp.
5. 2009 Corvette ZR1: There's a 638-hp supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 under its hood. It's
by far the quickest and fastest production Corvette ever built.
4. 1990 Corvette ZR1: A bold experiment with a Lotus-designed, 375-horsepower, 5.7-liter
DOHC 32-valve
V8, widened rear fenders and a massive price tag. Set the performance bar for all Corvettes
to come.
2. 1963 Corvette Coupe: The first Corvette Sting Ray. Nearly a half-century later, it's still an
astonishingly beautiful car. Plus all-independent suspension and the L84 fuel-injected 327cubic-inch V8 made 360 hp.
What was number 1? Sorry it was not a Corvette, of course the C7 was not out in 2012
when the article was written!
Enjoy the ride every chance you get,
Richard Fox
Cape Fear Corvettes Meet a new Member
Jarvis Simmons, born 11/19/1951. I grew up in Columbus county around the Tabor City
area, so I am a country boy. I moved here to Leland in 1972 and started a career with
DuPont and retired in 2013. I always dreamed of owning a corvette one day. I have a
brother that has had three corvettes and enjoyed driving them when I visited him in TN.
Last year I finally got my first corvette, a 2004 yellow convertible, my dream right now is to
upgrade to a C7(maybe in 2017) and of course it will be a yellow convertible. Two of my
favorite models are the '72, '73 years, I guess because last years with metal bumpers. I
liked the 73 because I think just rear medal bumper looked great. I just like riding around
with the top down and going to some car shows to look at other corvettes and talking to
other owners. Right now I am engaged to a wonderful woman, Mary Showers and we hope
to get married in August. She really enjoys riding in my corvette when we can put the top
down. We hope to get to the Corvette Museum soon. Oh, by the way I am a huge Tarheel
fan.

Chevrolet Debuts New Corvettes Colors
What better way to kick off Corvette event season at the National
Corvette Museum than by debuting the four new 2017 Corvette colors?
The last weekend of April each year marks our annual Michelin NCM
Bash, and this year participants were the FIRST to see all four new
Corvette colors: Admiral Blue, Black Rose Metallic, Sterling Blue and
Watkins Glen Gray Metallic. Samples of each color car were on display
and attendees got to "try them on for size."
If you missed out, we have a few photos on our website, as well as the 2017 Corvette ordering guide here.

2017 Grand Sport Pricing Announced
Chevrolet announced today the track-bred 2017 Corvette Grand Sport
will be priced at $66,445 for coupe models and $70,445 for convertibles,
when they go on sale this summer. The prices include the destination
charge, but not tax, title and other dealer fees.
With heritage-inspired design cues combined with track-focused chassis
and suspension elements, the new Grand Sport builds on a legacy established in 1963, when five Grand
Sport race cars were built under the direction of the Corvette’s first chief engineer, Zora Arkus-Duntov.

Chevrolet Corvette Plant Gets $439
Million in Upgrades
Corvette paint is about to get a lot more high-tech and a lot more
environmentally friendly thanks to a $439 million investment by General
Motors. Construction of the new paint shop, which includes substantial
technology upgrades, is planned to begin this summer and take
approximately two years to complete.
Along with new tooling and robots, the paint shop’s state-of-the-art environmental and efficiency
enhancements include:

Dry Scrubber Booth Technology with Limestone Handling System designed to eliminate sludge water and
waste

Light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting for process decks for improved visual inspection as well as energy
savings

State-of-the-art FANUC robots with Versa-bell 3 electrostatic applicators for an extremely smooth finish and
maximum transfer efficiency, saving 25 percent of the paint material used, which also benefits the environment

Longer, high-efficiency baking ovens for exceptional paint finish and lower energy use.

organizations. We would love to showcase a few cars during the week of May 9th-14th. We
have a resident parade on Monday May 9th at 10:30, and will be doing activities the
entire week. If any of your members could bring their cars down, I know our residents
here would greatly appreciate it! I am looking at any day that week besides Monday and

9th ANNUAL CORVETTE SHOW
SILENT AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED
It’s that time again as we are working on the plans for our corvette show and
we need the help of all our members with getting donations for the silent
auction. This year we are doing things a little differently.
This year we would like to have about 25 to 30 high quality desirable items in
the auction. We are looking for new or like new condition Corvette and
automotive themed items as well as gift certificates for local golf courses,
restaurants and services.
We are NOT asking everyone to get some car cleaning supplies as we have in
the past. What we are doing is asking that if you were going to donate some
cleaning supplies to please send a check for the amount you would have spent
to the club. With these funds we will purchase some nice Corvette themed
items.
All items must be brought to a monthly meeting or to Peter’s Speed Shop
monthly Cruise Night or contact Peter Ziehl to arrange to drop the items off no
later than September 11th.
No items will be accepted the day of the Corvette
