Science you can see! 4.7 Stars (over 180 reviews) Weight-Loss Trial Results SafeChoice Special Care ® Keep the muscle, lose the fat. OBJECTIVE Demonstrate weight loss of overweight horses by reducing body fat to target body condition score (BCS) in a period of 6 weeks. DATA SUMMARY TABLES Baseline 6 weeks Difference % Change CHANGES IN BODY WEIGHT (AVG.) 1313.6 (lb.) 1247.9 (lb.) -65.7 (lb.) 5.0%* CHANGES IN BODY CONDITION SCORE (AVG.) 6.7 5.9 -0.8 12.8% CHANGES IN CRESTY NECK SCORE (AVG.)** 2.8 1.9 -0.9 31.9% * Average rate of weight loss was approximately 11 lb. per week. Approximately 1/4 decrease in BCS weight equivalent, per week. ** Reference: Carter et al., 2009. Apparent adiposity assessed by standardized scoring systems and morphometric measurements in horses and ponies. Vet J. Feb;179(2):204-10. KEY FINDINGS Horses demonstrated a safe rate of weight loss during this 6 week trial with measured intake. No metabolic disturbances were experienced through the duration of this trial. Data from this research suggests that body weight decreases were due to decline in fat mass, not lean muscle mass. No change in loin muscle depth measurements concurrent with decreases in % body fat suggest horses maintained lean tissue mass while decreasing fat stores. All horses demonstrated decreases in Crest Neck Score (CNS). After 6 weeks, 6 out of 7 horses had subjective CNS under 3, so would not be considered “cresty.” ABOUT LOIN MUSCLE DEPTH Largest muscle in horse’s back. Runs along the top-line on either side of the spine. (Fig. 1a) Supports horse’s trunk & distributes propulsion from hind-end Ultrasound is a useful tool to image this muscle. (Fig. 1b) Figure 1a. Graphical marking of where the LD muscle is on the horse. Figure 1b. Ultrasound image displays the cross section of a loin muscle in a mature horse. Arrow indicates the depth measurement (cm) of the muscle. References Figure 1 and Figure 2: Frandson, R. D. and T. L. Spurgeon. 1992. The results of this research demonstrates that when fed a diet designed for Easy Keepers, horses can safely and effectively drop fat while maintaining muscle mass.
